In this episode I spoke with stand-up comedian Stella Graham, who talked about comedy in New Zealand, wasting an hour, hiding at the back, and ringing Highways England. Stella has been going for some time now and is a superbly accomplished comedian. Although familiar with Stella's work here and there, the first time I saw a full show was "Undercurrent" as part of 2021's Leicester Comedy Festival which was entirely online for obvious reasons. Fortunately at 2022's Leicester, I was able to see Stella in person performing "Porcupine". At a recent mixed bill in Kingston-upon-Thames, I chatted with Stella for about half an hour about comedy in general and she revealed a little of her inner nerd's love of comedy. She's a wonderful writer and performer, with a huge weight of comic talent, performing on TV, radio and stage all over the world. As The Skinny once put it "If you're a TV executive, drop what you're doing and go see her now". Ambisense, an IoT and AI analytics business which helps companies to mitigate environmental risks and improve sustainability is pleased to have been involved in the Lower Thames Crossing Project, working to help them reduce their carbon cost of construction. Ambisense was involved in the preliminary ground surveys in support of Highways England's Lower Thames Crossing, which is a once in a generation road upgrade that looks to transform links between Kent, Thurrock, and Essex in the UK. The scheme will positively impact the entire South-East of the UK and beyond, providing a key gateway for trade between the midlands and the north. This is the first major UK infrastructure project to use its procurement to target low carbon construction with incentives that drive further continuous carbon reduction across projects of this type. “It has been fantastic to be involved in a project such as the Lower Thames Crossing. This ‘pathfinder' project has made use of carbon neutral construction as part of its efforts and ambitions to make the new crossing the greenest road ever built in the UK. The project will help the UK reach net zero by 2050, which is a very exciting prospect. Additionally, this sets the standard for all other infrastructural projects to be executed in a low carbon way in the future,” commented Stephen McNulty, CEO and founder of Ambisense. Ambisense contributed to reducing the carbon cost on the Lower Thames Crossing project by supplying high-quality data that was automatically, continuously, and securely transmitted, resulting in a reduced amount of site visits. Data analytics also reduced the risk of over-engineered designs, minimising the use of materials, such as concrete and steel, and reducing use of other resources. Ambisense's mission since being founded by CEO Stephen McNulty in 2014 has been to build the world?s leading system of intelligence – to automate, analyse, and accelerate environmental risk assessment for a safer and more sustainable world. This project is a model example of how technology can be successfully woven into incumbent industry business models and used to support the project team in the management and mitigation of environmental risk. National Highways have employed many tactics, such as the involvement of Ambisense, to ensure this process is done in the most environmentally positive way possible. Ambisense combines comprehensive geo-environmental industry experience with deep technical expertise to give a solution unique to our industry. It uses environmental intelligence to give actionable insights into both the current and predicted status of a project, allowing faster, better decision-making. “We are delighted to have had the opportunity to share our expertise as part of such a strategically important low carbon infrastructure project in the UK, a project that paves the way for transport infrastructure progress. The ambitions of the Lower Thames Crossing team echo our own, and we are excited to see more projects like this across the UK in the future,” commented Richard Lavery, Development Director – Infrastructure & Construction. The route, which has been in discussion for more than 10 years, is estimated to open in 2029 or 2030. See more podcasts here. Highways England have written to me as part of a consultation about a proposed Motorway junction improvement scheme. That is to say, the letter began “Dear Resident”, so I don't imagine they will be crying into their tea when they don't hear back from me. Not having a car seems a belief too far for some people. How can anyone live without one? “I don't believe you don't have one,” said the woman sitting next to me. “I'm a devotee of the bus,” I explained with the usual blah blah qualifier about not being about to blah blah. Her objections were two fold: the inconvenience of public transport, the inconvenience of the public. I take her point on both counts but all life is on the bus and mine is the richer for it. Twenty years ago I was sitting on the bus minding my own business when the woman sitting next to me leant over and asked, “are you Anna?” She was the Mother of a long lost school friend. I phoned her. We caught up. “Actually, I won't take your number as I've got enough friends,” she said as the call ended. I learnt a valuable lesson. The future is generally best approached without carrying the past on your back. When the son was young, he'd fall asleep in my arms, sitting on buses. You can't do that while driving a car. A couple of weeks ago I did eleven stops, sitting in the middle of a domestic row that was amongst the best I've ever witnessed.  “You never listen to me,” yelled the woman who was sitting behind me. “That's because you're not worth listening to,” said the man standing at the front of the bus. “Come and sit next to me. Have I got to tell the whole bus our business? “ “No. You don't need to say anything.” There was a long silence until the woman could bare it no more. “What I really want,” she bellowed in a tone that informed her fellow passengers that something was being unreasonably withheld from her, ” is that colonic irrigation.” “Be quiet,” said the man. “You would even begrudge me that.” One woman's misery is twenty other people's side splitting moment. Recently I sat next to woman, at the bus stop, who was veiled and wearing gloves. Perfectly relaxed, she was knitting. I couldn't restrain myself. How was it possible to do that? “Practice.”  Now we meet at the bus stop from time to time. She always says hello and we've started to chat. She's not a letter box or a bomber but a nice woman I would never have met if it wasn't for the bus. I met my neighbour on the bus. We'd been passing each other in the street and never knew the other one was there because neither of us could see the other one blah blah.  He sat next to me and a good traffic jam got the conversation flowing. He told me how to get asbestos removed for free, and I told him about local swimming sessions if you can't see.  That saved me nearly a thousand pounds. Who knows, it might have saved him from a kick in the teeth and dentures. Sometimes I run into my friends on the bus and get a bonus catch up.  They have the advantage of never having to bother to speak to me if they don't want to, because I will never know they are there.  If we were circling each other in our cars we'd hoot and wave, that's all. The car may be king but long live the emperor of transport, the bus.

In the Grimshaw Podcast Cities series we have interviewed city-shapers of all kind: architects and urban designers, transport specialists, cultural entrepreneurs, developers, and city leaders. Our series ends the year with that cornerstone of urban development – masterplanning. And who better to discuss this with than Selina Mason? Selina is a masterplanner and architect with extensive experience of delivering complex urban masterplans. She is responsible for driving high quality design and masterplanning across the UK and Europe in the urban regeneration portfolio of major international developer Lendlease, amounting to £30bn end value. Selina is a recognised leader in urban spatial planning and design leadership. She is a UK Design Council Ambassador and has recently been appointed by the Government to the Urban Centre Recovery Task Force. She is the Chair of the Quality Review Panel of Havering Council, a fast growing part of the Thames Gateway on the east side of London, and is a member of several other Design Review panels. She also represents the Royal Institute of British Architects on the Highways England's Strategic Design Panel where she champions investment in better quality infrastructure. Before joining Lendlease in 2017, Selina led a range of city-shaping regeneration masterplans including the new UCL campus at Stratford, a prime legacy of the 2012 Olympics in the area. Until 2014 she was indeed responsible for the delivery of the London 2012 Masterplan and the design and delivery of the post-Games Transformation Masterplan for the Olympic Delivery Authority and subsequently the London Legacy Development Corporation. And before all this, she was Director of Architecture and Design Review at the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) until 2007: CABE's work and approach has been hugely influential internationally. Selina is currently leading on one of the most important urban regeneration projects in Europe, the 50-50 joint venture with London's oldest housing charity Peabody to deliver more than 11,000 homes in Thamesmead in south-east London. With this last podcast of 2021, we encourage you to join us in 2022 for the next podcast series: The Culture Series. What is the importance for humanity for its ability to travel? With contributions from many people and casting a totally refreshing view on people's deep-seated desire to travel, is a new book – Why Travel? – edited by Dr Matthew Niblett and Kris Beuret OBE, of the Independent Transport Commission. Leon Daniels OBE chats to them about editing the book, which has contributions from many people, not just in travel businesses, but beyond.  In essence, it's an anthology of travel by a range of people, that also takes in the social aspects to understand our need to move and how it shapes our lives. Kris tells Leon that she was inspired to produce the book after being “fed up” with transport modelling “that assumes that travel is all about time saved.” The range of contributors shed a different viewpoint from the popularly-presented one that travel is unpleasant and something to be avoided. They mull over why commuting is beneficial, why an hour is the ideal commute and what we've done to replace it They discuss how much travel we need for our wellbeing, our complicated needs to travel and whether technology is the enemy. Considering transport policy, there's a discussion about whether we should move away from thinking about restricting travel to better travel, that then moves onto why ‘slower travel' can be better travel and the benefit of cheap travel.  They conclude by examining what young people will do to change travel behaviours and how that fits with their generational view of the need to be ‘green'. https://bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/why-travel Kris Beuret Kris Beuret OBE is the Director of Social Research Associates (SRA). She is a sociologist, previously an academic, and a member of the Independent Transport Commission and Highways England's Research and Innovation Advisory Board. Kris has advised the House of Commons Transport Committee, TfL, the DfT and overseas governments on disability and diversity issues. Matthew Niblett Dr Matthew Niblett is Director of the Independent Transport Commission (ITC) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He oversees the ITC's research portfolio and has presented findings from this research to Ministers and Parliamentary Select Committee enquiries. Matthew holds a doctorate from the University of Oxford and was a Senior Research Associate at Oxford's Transport Studies Unit.

This month's podcast features a bumper news update, including the recent reaction to the proposed London Resorts Theme Park planning application. NCE's editor Claire Smith, news editor Rob Horgan and reporter Catherine Kennedy go over the month's most interesting stories: could the French ban on domestic short-haul flights be translated to the UK? Also on the table is multipurpose infrastructure projects, with some industry figures asking if projects like Lower Thames Crossing could include a railway and if a ‘systems' view for UK infrastructure would be a sensible approach. Later, Nadine Buddoo, features editor at NCE joins the conversation introducing this month's guest, Graham Richards. Graham is the director of planning and performance at the Office of Rail and Road. He takes a few minutes to explain the purpose of the organisation, before being quizzed by the team on the second Road Investment Strategy (RIS). What are its key focus areas and what progress has thus far been made by Highways England? What lessons have been learned from RIS1? Will there be a third strategy, and how will that differ from what's past given we're coming up on the government-forced ban on specific types of vehicles? Graham is also asked how RIS3 fits into the journey to net zero. The Engineers Collective is powered by Bentley Systems. Around the world, engineers and architects, constructors and owner-operators are using Bentley's software solutions to accelerate project delivery and improve asset performance for transportation infrastructure that sustains our economy and our environment. In this episode Prof. Greg Clark meets Paul Doney, Director of Innovation & Continuous Improvement at Highways England – the highway, traffic and street authority that manages 4,300 miles of motorways and major A-roads across England. In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic the reduction in traffic volume on England's strategic road network was huge. But as the economy now starts to recover it's important to remain focussed on those medium to long term challenges that haven't gone away. What do the UK's net zero ambitions mean for England's strategic road network? What contribution is innovation making on that journey and where are the opportunities for businesses? How can digitisation and new and emerging technologies help to connect not just people but places? Paul Doney has had a distinguished career as a civil engineer and a background in contracting, engineering and local government, Paul joined the Highways Agency in 2003 and more recently has been leading the innovation agenda at Highways England with a strong focus on customer value. Suddenly, like spring daffodils, smart motorways are sprouting everywhere. According to both Labour and Conservative governments, these roads are thought to be very clever. But anyone can see that doing away with the hazard lane puts everyone driving on the motorway in danger. Alas, the government does not agree as they continue to spend millions of pounds installing them across the country. Jason Mercer had a minor bump on a smart motorway back in 2019. He was killed when a lorry ploughed into him and Alexandru Murgeanu as they exchanged details. His widow, Claire, is now campaigning for the abolition of these dangerous roads and she joined us on Sputnik to tell us about her call on Highways England to reinstate hard shoulders and make motorways safe. By 2050, one-third of the British population will be biracial. Dr. Remi Adekoya has written a new book, ‘Biracial Britain: A Different Way of Looking at Race’, which explores what it means to be in one of the fastest growing minority groups in Britain today. He has garnered the accounts of people across the UK, trying to understand what it “feels” like to be biracial in an increasingly polarised world where race is always discussed in a binary black/white way. He joined Sputnik to tell us about the picture he saw emerging through the experiences of both the young and the old which, according to Remi, can differ across the country, from city to city and even street to street.

In this episode, Clare Carroll chats with digital experts Damon Harding at Digital Works Group, and Dave Horton from Triad to discuss the challenges facing the Legal sector as well as opportunities and potential solutions. For many years the Legal sector was generally recognised as a closed profession with traditional business structures, the billable hour and somewhat outdated processes and practices. Post the Legal Services Act (2007) and the emergence of the Alternative Business Structures, new ways of operating and investment opportunities are slowly opening up but adoption is slower than expected. Now, some areas of Law have really suffered from Covid related lockdowns whilst it’s fair to say a few have flourished, but overall, a survey by the Law Society’s Law Management Section suggests that firms are forecasting a 10-20% drop in revenue for the 2020/2021 financial year. Surely now, more than ever, the Legal sector must innovate: Can Intelligent Automation help? Speakers in this episode: Damon Harding, Partner at Digital Works Group, is an established strategic business transformation leader and non-executive director (NED). He has been successfully transforming complex businesses in highly competitive and fast-moving markets for over 20 years for the likes of TalkTalk, World Vision and many more. He has delivered numerous large-scale integration and transformation programmes; helping clients achieve immediate short-term change and focus on their long-term goals and objectives. As a process re-engineering expert he can drive improvements to front and back-office processes, using a customer-first and business model need approach to target rapid improvements in customer experience, commercial efficiency and operational performance. Dave Horton is a principal consultant at Triad, responsible for providing IT strategy and architecture services to clients. With extensive experience defining and delivering IT, Dave has helped companies including the Department for Transport, Highways England and UK law firms with the technical assurance of their IT delivery projects. He also heads up Triad’s Intelligent Automation practice, which is committed to helping every department in businesses secure the benefits automation offers.

The British government went against the recommendations of planning officials Thursday, approving controversial plans for a road tunnel to be built near the prehistoric monument of Stonehenge in southern England. The project, which is aimed at trying to ease traffic along a stretch of road widely prone to gridlock, has been touted for decades but has faced vociferous opposition from local residents as well as archaeologists. The A303 highway, which is a popular route for motorists traveling to and from the southwest of England, is often severely congested around the single-lane section of road near Stonehenge. As part of widespread improvements, a two-mile tunnel will be built that will effectively remove the sight and sound of traffic passing the site, and cut journey times. The decision by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps goes against the recommendation of the Planning Inspectorate, which warned of “permanent" and "irreversible” harm arising from the project, unseen in the site's history. However, according to the Department for Transport, Shapps was said to be “satisfied that on balance the need case for the development together with the other benefits identified outweigh any harm.”Proponents of the upgrade, which Highways England has estimated will cost 1.7 billion pounds ($2.2 billion), say it will dramatically ease congestion and eventually help the local environment. The agency expects the fieldwork to start in late spring next year, with the main five-year construction phase expected to start by 2023.“This transformational scheme will return the Stonehenge landscape towards its original setting and will improve journey times for everyone who travels to and from the southwest," the agency's chief executive, Jim O’Sullivan said.Opponents of the scheme, who have a six-week window to appeal to Britain's High Court, have for years voiced worries about the potential damage to the environment, wildlife and potential archaeological finds underground. The Stonehenge Alliance, which has campaigned against the tunnel, said it “deeply regrets” a decision that will be greeted with “shock” around the world. The group added that the plan will breach the U.K.'s international treaty obligations “not to damage” the World Heritage Site.Historian, author and broadcaster Tom Holland, who is president of the Stonehenge Alliance, said the group will oppose the “shameful” decision as vigorously as possible.“The decision to inject a great gash of tarmac and concrete into Britain’s most precious prehistoric landscape is one that ranks simultaneously as spendthrift and sacrilegious," he said.Hopes that the project wouldn't win approval were raised in June when it emerged that a team of archaeologists had discovered a ring of at least 20 large shafts within the site, a short distance from the standing stones. In a statement, the National Trust, which looks after 2,100 acres around Stonehenge, said it had a “long-standing ambition” to resolve issues relating to the A303 and that it will "now take some time to study the conclusions of the examining authority in full before responding further.”Stonehenge, which is one of the world’s most famous prehistoric monuments, was built on the flat lands of Salisbury Plain in stages, starting 5,000 years ago, with the unique stone circle erected in the late Neolithic period about 2,500 B.C.The site's meaning has been a subject of vigorous debate through the centuries, some seemingly more outlandish than others.English Heritage, a charity that manages hundreds of historic sites, notes several explanations over the centuries from Stonehenge being a coronation place for Danish kings, a Druid temple, a cult center for healing or even an astronomical computer for predicting eclipses and solar events.Nowadays, the charity said the interpretation “most generally accepted is that of a prehistoric temple aligned with the movements of the sun.”Whatever it was designed to be, Stonehenge has long captu...

Reports Bloomberg today: "The world’s No. 2 oil explorer by market value is spending as much as $2 billion a year on its new-energies division, mainly to grow in a power sector it sees delivering 8 to 12 percent annual returns, according to Maarten Wetselaar, director of Shell’s integrated gas and new-energies unit. Shell’s acquisitions in power so far include U.K. electricity provider First Utility, car-charging operator NewMotion and a stake in U.S. solar company Silicon Ranch Corp. It has also announced it’s bidding for Dutch utility Eneco, which provides low-carbon power to industrial users and offers apps and other technology to manage electricity consumption."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-03-11/shell-says-it-can-be-world-s-top-power-producer-and-make-money   BILL FORD SAYS AUTOMAKER PAIRS WELL WITH VW: SHARED ELECTRIC CARS LIKELY “Bill Ford — chairman of Ford Motor Company and great-grandson of Henry Ford — has spoken out about the potential for a partnership with Volkswagen. He believes that the two companies are set up to succeed if a joint effort comes to be." Writes Steven Loveday for an InsideEVs.com article today: "Ford says that both automakers have full realization of the difficulties involved in moving to EVs and self-driving cars."   Bill Ford told Bloomberg: "We fit together geographically really well, product line-wise, we fit together well. We both came to the same realization that as big as our balance sheets are, no company can do this alone. I’d like Ford to be around another 100 years, and if that’s going to happen, it’s clear that we really have to branch off into new directions to try to solve some of these problems. It’s hard because our current business model is providing all the earnings and cash flow that fund a lot of this change. So we have to do both really well. If we don’t make great cars and trucks today that people want, guess what? There is no tomorrow."   https://insideevs.com/bill-ford-says-vw-shared-electric-cars-likely/   JAMES BOND TO DRIVE ELECTRIC ASTON MARTIN IN NEW MOVIE "next year’s 25th Bond film looks set to have Ian Fleming’s hero make his first concession to climate change, by driving an electric Aston Martin – albeit one which retails at £250,000." Reports the UK Guardian today: "the film – whose working title of Shatterhand was recently debunked – will see Daniel Craig’s 007 behind the wheel of an Aston Martin Rapide E, one of only 155 electric cars being built by the British manufacturer. Aston Martin’s relationship with the spy franchise began in 1964, when Sean Connery drove a DB5 sports car in Goldfinger."   https://www.theguardian.com/film/2019/mar/13/james-bond-to-drive-electric-aston-martin-in-new-movie   ELON RETWEETS: "HOW DOES A TESLA MODEL 3 IMPACT YOUR ELECTRIC BILL?" "Who better than Engineering Explained to break down electricity costs for owning and EV like the Tesla Model 3? We’ve learned that one of the most common questions from potential EVs owners is: How much will my home electric bill go up from charging my EV?" Says Steven Loveday at InsideEVs.com: "In the end, when looking at more realistic gas prices, an EV like the Tesla Model 3 will save you a ton of money. The best part is, Engineering Explained provides a nice, easy equation so that you can run the comparisons yourself before you move forward."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-analysis-ev-cheap-drive/   NEWMOTION REACHES NETWORK OF MORE THAN 100,000 CHARGE POINTS NewMotion is the first in the industry to have reached more than 100,000 charge points in its roaming charging network in Europe. The company works together with over 200 roaming partners to build this extensive network of public charge points, allowing EV drivers to roam seamlessly across 28 countries in Europe. Writes James Fossdyke for InsideEVs.com today: "Highways England, the government-run company in charge of England’s strategic road network, awarded the contract jointly to BP Chargemaster and Swarco UK as part of its drive to promote the uptake of electric cars. The organisation wants to ensure that 95 percent of its network is within 20 miles of a charging point, in the hope that this will encourage more motorists to switch to electric power."   https://insideevs.com/uk-motorways-50-new-ev-fast-chargers/   2019 WORLD CAR OF THE YEAR FINALISTS ANNOUNCED IN GENEVA The top 4 finalists for the 2019 World Car of the Year award have been announced at the Geneva Motor Show, where the Jaguar I-Pace grabbed the European Car Of The Year Award. The facility will get a new body shop with a total area of 75,500 square meters for the next-generation Macan, which will be manufactured from the beginning of the next decade."   Porsche says: "“The expansion project gives Porsche the option to produce fully electric vehicles on the existing production line in addition to petrol and hybrid models in the future. The first car to benefit from extended factory premises will be the next generation of the Macan: As a purely electrically powered vehicle based on the “Premium Platform Electric” (PPE) architecture, the new Macan will roll off the assembly line in Leipzig at the beginning of the next decade.”   https://insideevs.com/porsche-invest-to-produce-electric-macan/   TOYOTA IS LOSING THE ELECTRIC CAR RACE, SO IT PRETENDS HYBRIDS ARE BETTER "There are at least 12 car companies currently selling an all-electric vehicle in the United States, and Toyota isn’t one of them. Despite admitting recently that the Tesla Model 3 alone is responsible for half of Toyota’s customer defections in North America — as Prius drivers transition to all-electric — the company has been an outspoken laggard in the race to electrification." According to the deSmog website: "Last week, at the Geneva Auto Show, a Toyota executive provided a curious explanation for the company’s refusal to launch a single battery electric vehicle. As Car and Driver reported, Toyota claims that it is limited by battery production capacity and that “Toyota is able to produce enough batteries for 28,000 electric vehicles each year — or for 1.5 million hybrid cars.” In other words, because Toyota has neglected to invest in battery production, it can only produce enough batteries for a trivial number of all-electric vehicles."   https://www.desmogblog.com/2019/03/12/toyota-losing-electric-car-race-pretends-hybrids-better   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Safety Concerns over Smart Motorways

MP’s have told 5 live Investigates they want the roll-out of ‘all-lane running’ smart motorways to be suspended amid concerns over the safety of stranded motorists and the recovery workers who go to rescue them. All-lane running – or ALR – motorways are stretches of carriageway where the hard shoulder has been removed and converted into a running lane. That lane is only closed to traffic in the event of an incident. Highways England says ALR motorways are as safe as traditional motorways and they improve traffic flow. But there are many people who disagree. Ellie Montgomery and her family became stranded on a traditional motorway which didn’t have a hard shoulder because of road works. Their vehicle was hit by an HGV on the M6 in Cheshire and the family narrowly escaped serious injury. She sets out her concerns about taking away hard shoulders. Photo credit: Press Association.

Cold Comfort is the annual winter maintenance conference and exhibition, now in its 27th year. It's taking place at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. In the first of two programmes from the event, we hear about innovations in vehicle technology from Schmidt, talk to the Chair of NWSRG, Chris Cranston from Devon County Council, and also hear from the Project Manager - Severe Weather Plan at Highways England. There's also conversation with Bunce about their new products introduced into the market and Mercedes-Benz Unimog about how their vehicles were used this winter, and it wasn't how you might expect. This is the audio companion to the coverage on Highways Magazine's website, and (pardon the pun) weather you're at the event or not, it's well worth half an hour for a listen.
