This is the second part of our discussion with Dr. Anna Kavoura on how gender informs meaning in sport. In the first part, we explored Anna's work on intersecting identities in women's martial arts, as well as her current research project titled "Transforming Gender Boundaries in Sport: An Ethnographic and Participatory Action Research Study in Trans-Inclusive Sport Contexts”. This episode continues our discussion exploring the dominant gender discourses in sports context and what can be done to challenge them. We also discuss the dilemma of women-only training groups in martial arts. While these groups can be useful for attracting more women to male-dominated martial arts gyms, there are some possible problems with them such as reinforcing the gender binary and hierarchical understandings of gender. What are the ways we can use this strategy well?    Dr. Anna Kavoura has completed several interesting research projects on gender in sports. She completed her PhD in Sport Sciences at the Univerity of Jyväskylä in Finland, which focused on understanding women's identity negotiations in competitive judo cultures in Greece and Finland. After defending her PhD, she continued working as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Jyväskylä in the PREACT project which focuses on tackling discrimination against gender and sexual minorities in sport and physical education contexts (PI: Dr Marja Kokkonen). She then moved to the School of Sport and Service Management at the University of Brighton and works as a postdoctoral researcher in the "Transforming Gender Boundaries in Sport" project which is funded by the Finnish Cultural Foundation.

Debbie Reynolds, “The Data Diva” talks to Andowah Newton, Former Vice President of Legal Affairs for  LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. We discuss Newton's background in math, accounting, and auditing and how she became well-versed in technology through computer classes and gaming. She also talks about her international experience, including her experience of having dual law degrees from Cornell Law Scholl in the US and The Univerity of Paris at the Sorbonne in France, and a time when she was the only American lawyer in the judicial chambers at the Hague, and how it gave her a unique perspective on international data privacy issues. Newton discusses her experience dealing with technology and data privacy issues while working for LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, a European company that encompassed 70 different brands and several different industries. We discuss the use of advanced technology in the beauty and fashion industry, which allows for the personalization of products and the collection of more specific personal data. We also discuss the potential privacy concerns related to data collection in the beauty and fashion industry and highlight the need for companies to reevaluate the data they are collecting and the importance of obtaining informed consent from customers. Newton analyzes the cultural and legal differences between the US and Europe, focusing on privacy, fashion, celebrity culture, and legal systems. She notes that the US has a more flexible approach to laws and values privacy less than European countries, which have a more structured and formal approach. She also highlights the differences between the common law system in the US and the code-based civil law system in Europe, how these differences contribute to the gaps in data privacy laws, and her hope for Data Privacy in the future.Correction: Ms. Newton would like to correct the statement about her time at the Hague made in the podcast audio.  During her time at the Hague, Ms. Newton was the only American lawyer in the judicial chambers at the Hague, not the only American lawyer at the Hague.Support the show

If you like these Celery City Stories and you want me to keep telling them every week then please buy a cup of coffee https://www.buymeacoffee.com/danping (by following this link.) It was the game football fans had anticipated for weeks. Two powerhouses were set to meet in Atlanta. The crown for Southern football supremacy awaited the winner. (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association) The University of Alabama Crimson Tide was undefeated, led by a salty defense that had allowed only 7 points through the first 8 games of the year. Their opponent: The University of Georgia Bulldogs. Georgia, too, was undefeated, and had crushed the Florida Gators the week before by a score of 56-0. Hugh Whelchel was the hero of the game, and that's the Sanford connection. Whechel's 2 blocked kicks in the Alabama game were crucial to the Bulldogs winning the game. The second one that resulted in the winning touchdown is ranked 4th in https://www.amazon.com/Greatest-Georgia-Bulldogs-Football-History/dp/1600781195 (Patrick Garbin's book “The 50 Greatest Plays In Georgia Bulldogs Football History.)” Garbin also notes that Whelchel would ultimately block 19 kicks during his career at Georgia. Whelchel was born Lumpkin County in Northeast Georgia. After graduating from the Univerity of Georgia, he moved to Sanford in 1925. According to his obituary in the April 25, 1968 issue of the Sanford Herald, Whelchel coached the Seminole High School football team in 1926 and 27. https://www.celerycitystories.com/a-good-wife-and-a-strong-martini-help-change-history/ (Red Barber, the subject of last week's Celery City Story), was one of the better players on Whelchel's 1926 team. The quarterback of those teams was Jim Spencer. Long-time Sanford residents will remember Jim Spencer's, which was a very popular restaurant here in town during the 150s, 60s an 70s. I guarantee there will be 2 or 3 Celery City Stories that feature Jim Spencer and his family. For all of his accomplishments on the gridiron, Hugh Whelchel spent most of his time as a successful farmer here in Sanford. When the State Farmer's Market opened in 1930 at French Avenue and Historic Goldsboro Avenue, Mr. Whechel was the second person to set up a stall in the facility. Harold Kastner, who's family has deep farming roots in Sanford, was the first. I don't think many people today what a big economic engine the State Farmer's Market was in Sanford for a long time. I probably need t o do a story on the market at some point. Hugh would never really stop farming, but from 1950 to 1954 he operated the Mayfair Country Club. He worked for Chase & Co. for a few years, and Hugh was also the fertilizer inspector for the state of Florida Department of Agriculture.

What is Climate Finance? How does NZ compare to the rest of the world when it comes to regulation and policy development? And what is transition risk? All this is covered in the podcast as well as a bit of detail on the STRAND Marsden Project (proudly supported by CoreLogic) which as well as evaluating different models for understanding the potential impacts of flooding, looked into the South Dunedin floods of 2015 and the influence they had on property prices both short and long term.Overall, NZ is making good progress in the Climate Finance space but there's also plenty left to do. For the Law School Show's 200th episode, we focus on alumni. We reached out to several Univerity of Ottawa law grads to ask them about their stories within the profession, and our responses ranged from articling students to long-time practitioners, inside and outside conventional practice. Over a series of mini-interviews, Kenya-Jade Pinto, Aditya Rao, Helen Berry, Samantha Peters, Wali Ahmad, Jolene Hansell, and Stephanie Wright showed us the places our studies can take us, from international documentary projects to Supreme Court clerkships and beyond. If you've ever been curious about human rights law in a global pandemic, how to get involved in start-ups, the similarities between law and ballet, or just how to find your place in our profession, then you'll find a lot to like in our great big bicentennial.

Speech can either cause some of our biggest social divides or it will bring us all together. One way to create diversity and unity in our speech is found in the value of learning multiple languages. Growing up in a home experiencing more than one language means that you are able to perceive people's speech in different ways. Having grown up with Cantonese being my primary language, yet living in an English dominant world, I saw that first hand which is why it brings me great joy to share to bring on Katherine Kinzler to the podcast. Katherine is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Chicago. Her work has appeared regularly in the New York Times and other outlets, and she was named a “Young Scientist,” one of 50 scientists under age 40 recognized by the World Economic Forum. Her book "How You Say It: Why You Talk the Way You Do—And What It Says About You" exposes linguistic prejudice and that is the reason why I wanted her on the show. Originally, I was so drawn to her work with kids showing why multilingualism is beneficial for kids and our society as at the time, my kiddo was getting ready to start kindergarten and I was teaching her some basic Cantonese and French (as French is also an official language of Canada). It struck me how Katherine's work mirrored a lot of how I grew up and wondered how this would impact my own daughter. But then as I poured through the rest of her book, I realized her work lines up exactly with podcasting as well. You need to share your voice, join the conversation, and contribute to the world's voices. As I say, there are no mistakes, just open your mouth and try because it's all a journey. If you don't try and speak up, how will you learn for the next time? Because there will always be a next time. If that thought of a next time brings up some fear and other emotions, I'd love for you to join me on my webinar.
