If you're a bit lost on what's happening in Earth, the Marauder, I'd heartily suggest checking out the previous issue of Astounding, the July Issue! We did indeed read that in a previous episode of the show, just check the titles, I always title the first episode of a given thing with the title of the book, so that should make the July issue pretty easy to find!  Well, hopefully anyway. Even if not, a good most of the time, these serialized stories usually do a great job of reminding you what you missed. They kind of have to, y'know? Since not everybody caught every issue, and you didn't wanna wind up completely lost if you missed a trip to the newstand, that's the tact I'd take, anyway.  Either way, the tale on display here really has its ups and its downs. Loads of fun concepts, but some of them it REALLY doesn't pull off. At least, if you can't stand to hear this one, it's not going to hang around forever! That's the glory of these short story collections, the stuff you don't like doesn't loom large. Sure, that comes with the downside of the things you like not sticking around too long, but some of these stories would need MAJOR reworks to be any longer than they were written here.  I do provide a disclaimer, since these books are aged and not well-remembered:  TL;DR up front: Paper Cuts is almost all public domain stuff, and some of it hasn't aged well. I'll be doing my best to warn you, but I'm not changing any of it, I don't believe censorship is the path forward here. Paper Cuts, by necessity, has to be a majority books that are in the US public domain. That means it's almost exclusively going to be content produced in the 1920s, or earlier. These works may have aspects that have not aged well to a modern viewer/listener. Now, I'm never one for censorship, but I do believe we are entitled to being able to filter the leisure content we don't want to see. So, this results in the following policy: I'll do my level best to warn you, the viewer, at the beginning of the episode, what's likely to come up. A great example is something like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which had some passages describing natives of various places in a fashion I'd charitably describe as unkindly. In cases where something sneaks up on me unwarned, I will be reading the content unedited, with my sincerest apologies for the lack of active warning. All that said, I'm gonna cover my bases with some common warnings that have come up often in books I've read before: Descriptions of "savage natives" Various racial slurs, unkind terms, and/or Descriptions of groups that have taken on a worse connotation General mistreatment and misrepresentation of cultures Generally speaking, if something I'm reading is on the page? Don't expect me to have opinions aligning with it. We're here to have fun, not disparage people! It was a complaint about the quality of a mobile phone that ultimately set Barry Napier on the path to becoming one of Ireland's most successful technology entrepreneurs. The owner of the company to which Barry complained liked him, and offered him a job, and so began a lucrative career within the technology industry. But it was in 2011, when Barry discovered Cubic Telecom,  that everything changed, and after a twelve-year, rollercoaster journey at the helm of the company, Barry has just sold a majority stake in the business to Softbank, valuing it at over $1 billion. Cubic Telecom connects cars, tractors, motorbikes and trucks to online services, using 90 mobile network operator deals in over 190 countries around the world – “we can touch a car in Brazil from Dublin and we can fix problems.” The company connects over 480,000 cars every month and its technology is currently in around 10% of all cars globally. Yet Barry has ambitions to grow that to 40% on the back of Softbank's investment. In this episode of The EY Podcast: CEO Outlook series, Barry Napier of Cubic Telecom shares the incredible story of how a small Irish company became a major player in a global ecosystem, securing a majority-stake investment from the world's largest tech-focused investment fund. In conversation with Richard Curran, Napier reveals the personal sacrifices he made while building the company, what he has learned along the way, and what comes next... “it's only 51%. So there's still a bit of the story to go. So keep an eye out. I think it'll be a bit of fun.”They also discuss:·       Barry's colourful career before Cubic, including the story of buying the Irish operations of an international company, BrightPoint, building its turnover to €155m, and then selling the assets to DCC.·       Meeting Elon Musk and partnering up with Tesla.·       The “really hard” process of going out to raise significant investment for Cubic Telecom and what he learned from the experience. ·       How Covid caused revenues to collapse by 80% overnight – but also how the company avoided making any staff redundant and also creating an innovative new revenue model. ·       The first thing he bought himself just after earning a reported 100m.·       Convincing Qualcomm, the biggest chip manufacturer in the world, to invest in Cubic in 2011.·       How early investors made 32 times their initial investment, more than they would have earned by investing in Apple.

Measuring Starlink TCP performance

In this episode of PING, APNIC's Chief Scientist Geoff Huston discusses Starlink again, and the ability of modern TCP flow control algorithms to cope with the highly variant loss and delay seen over this satellite network. Geoff has been doing more measurements using starlink terminals in Australia and the USA, at different times of day exploring the system behaviour. Starlink has broken new ground in Low Earth Orbit internet services. Unlike Geosynchronous satellite services which have a long delay but constant visibility of the satellite in stationary orbit above, Starlink requires the consumer to continuously re-select a new satellite as they move overhead in orbit. In fact, a new satellite has to be picked every 15 seconds. This means there's a high degree of variability in the behaviour of the link, both between signal quality to each satellite, and in the brief interval of loss ocurring at each satellite re-selection window. Its a miracle TCP can survive, and in fact in the case of the newer BBR protocol thrive, and achieve remarkably high throughput, if the circumstances permit. This is because of the change from a slow start, fast backoff model used in Cubic and Reno to a much more aggressive link bandwidth estimation model, which continuously probes to see if there is more room to play in.

Graph theory is the study of connections, as may be seen in the London Underground map with stations linked by rails, or a transportation network with cities linked by roads. Dating back to the 18th century, the subject increasingly took hold in the 20th century, developing rapidly from mainly recreational puzzles to a mainstream area of study with widespread applications and strong links to computer science. This illustrated historical talk will survey this century of development.A lecture by Robin Wilson recorded on 13 June 2023 at Barnard's Inn Hall, LondonThe transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/graph-theoryGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. 30 Years HAMdj (NL) 1993-2023 - Part 06 The Notorious H.A.M. (The Forgotten!!! - Classics 1990-2001) This month a mix i made in 2004, 19 years ago. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com We recently did an S&S 465 gear cam & oil pump upgrade on Popeye's 2019 Harley Street Glide special with the 114 ci Milwaukee Eight engine. We filmed this project in detail over several days. That detailed tutorial video will eventually be released on this YouTube Channel.  In this episode, Lurch and I talk about the project and also give our opinions and thoughts on the bike's performance after installation. Is it worth it? We also talk about tuning the engine to the new cam. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE There are many cam manufacturers out there, and there are just as many cam options.  After talking with some of our Patron Members in the members-only Law Abiding Biker Facebook Group, Popeye decided to go with the S&S gear drive 465 gear torque cam.  We have no affiliation with S&S, but we definitely recommend them.  You can get the kit Popeye used HERE.  A torque cam offers on-demand throttle response from low to mid RPM at cruising speed.  A power cam targets high RPM, wide-open throttle response that keeps pulling right up to the redline. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! You can go with a chain-driven cam or a gear-driven cam.  You need to measure your pinion shaft runout to make sure it's within specifications for a gear-driven cam.  The benefit of a gear-driven cam is you eliminate the chain and chain tensioner.   We tuned Popeye's bike with the Vance and Hines FP3 and it runs like a raped ape.  Tuning was easy with the FP3.  We selected the intake, cam, and exhaust for Popeye's bike and flashed it.  After flashing the "canned" map, we ran an auto-tune session with really dialed things in.  Due to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) findings and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) settlements, the FP3 may soon become a thing of the past.  We grabbed up a bunch of FP3s for you guys.  You can get one here: Vance and Hines FP3.  Specialty Tools Needed Runout/Gear Lash Gauge M8 Cam Shaft Bearing Remove/Install Tool  Jims Vacuum Tappet Pump-Up Tool Cam Gear Locking Tool  NEW FREE VIDEO RELEASED: The New 2022 Harley Nightster!
