The Trauma Therapist | Podcast with Guy Macpherson, PhD | Inspiring interviews with thought-leaders in the field of trauma.

This is a republishing of an archived episode with Carl Waggett. There are some people who are able to articulate concepts and feelings in a kind of perfect, let's-get-to-the-heart-of-the-matter way for a particular group of people, and Carl is that person for the first responder tribe.Carl's been a full-time firefighter for the past 14 years, and Acting Captain for 4 of them. After a fellow firefighter and close friend of Carl's ended his own life, Carl removed himself from the front line trucks only to be diagnosed with PTSD a short time afterward.Carl says he's learning that there are many sides to this very intelligent disorder, and would simply like to share his experiences in the hope that others understand that PTSD is more of a winnable battle than you think. Carl started his podcast, PTSD Bunker Gear For Your Brain, after his experiences with PTSD and to help other first responders. In This Episode:Carl's websiteCarl on FacebookCarl on TwitterCarl's podcast: PTSD Bunker Gear For Your Brain---What's new with The Trauma Therapist Project! The Trauma 5: gold nuggets from my 700+ interviewsThe Trauma Therapist Newsletter: a monthly resource of information and inspiration dedicated to trauma therapists. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5739761/advertisement

I thought I'd share a short article from May 14, 1923 in the New York Times that shows you that female nature trying to shut down male spaces and shut us up stretches way back in time. The woman in it even calls men that are single and refuse to remarry simps. That was one of the earliest documented uses. Here's what it says and I quote: "Woman Calls Bachelors "Simps" "Afraid to Take a Chance," Says Woman Referring to Club. In Atlantic City New Jersey on May 13 a letter signed by "Miss Lillian Henderson," which bitterly assailed Atlantic City's bachelors," was received here today by Acting Captain of Detectives Frank Feretti from Newark. The letter referred particularly to the now defunct Bachelors' Club here and the Atlantic City Widowers Association. "Those bachelor simps." wrote Miss Henderson." are afraid to take a chance and are too tight to share their earnings with a wife." The Bachelor Club assailed by Miss Henderson disbanded recently when some of its members deserted and married. The Widowers' Association headed by City Detective Edward Sowney, is formed mainly of those who have traveled a stormy marital path and have sworn "never again." unquote. At first I couldn't figure out why Miss Lillian Henderson petitioned the police to shut down a bachelor's club. Then it dawned on me she was probably trying to cancel Detective Edward Sowney back in 1923 for being head of the Widower's Association. That's probably the real reason she contacted his place of employment and sent his higher up the letter. This is 100 years ago and the cancel culture ideas remain the same the names have just change. Back then Widowers and bachelor's associations were used by men to meet and share ideas about female nature and probably just network. But proto feminists and suffragettes back then wanted to shut down all male spaces. They had shut down the bars when they banned alcohol only three years before thanks to the prohibition act. But that wasn't enough. Lilian was using the typical shaming language that single men were selfish and stupid simps. Shaming men back then for being cowards unwilling to take a chance. All stuff I recently spoke about in a video I shared that has a chapter from my upcoming book called: "Shaming Single Men." Lilian contacted active Captain of Detectives Frank Feretti. She was trying to shame detective Sowney to his boss and put pressure on him by also shaming him and all the detective to try and get Sowney canned. Lilian is trying to scare men from talking to one another in their own clubs and associations without the company of a woman. She's trying to say that they will be cancelled and it's pure scare tactics the way we see today. Mobile Suit Breakdown: the Gundam Anime Podcast

Show Notes Noh drama! A "mother complex!" and Mobile Suit Gundam Episode 7!This week, we recap and review Mobile Suit Gundam episode 7, "The Core Fighter's Escape," discuss our first impressions, and provide commentary and research on: hostage crises and Flight 472, how fighter jets land on aircraft carriers, laser measurement, "fool" and "coward" archetypes in European and Japanese literature and theatre, and what on Earth is a "mother complex"?Wikipedia has a list of major hostage crises, and more detailed information on Flight 472.We only covered the basics of how landing on an aircraft carrier works, but for more information on the myriad bits of technology that contribute to that process, check out this page on How Stuff Works. Here are links with more information on laser range-finding and laser measurement. In our research of possible literary and theatrical bases for Kai's character, we started with this overview of fool archetypes in European literature and theatre. The blog post that started us down the research rabbit-hole of "skeptic" characters in noh drama is here. For English-language information on noh (that isn't behind a paywall), the definitive source seems to be www.the-noh.com. It is from that site that we pulled definitions for the Ayakashi mask, the waki character-role, and the rongi question-and-response section of plays.**Special note: We included this bit about Acting Captains in the 1.6 show notes, but it was meant to go with this episode. To find our what exactly an "Acting Captain" is, we consulted the United States Navy Regulations, 1990, Department of the Navy, Washington, D.C. Chapter 10: Precedence, Authority, and Command, Section 4, 1074. Some nuances certainly vary from nation to nation, but the Imperial Japanese Navy took Britain's Royal Navy as its model (and the United States Navy originates in the same system). You can subscribe to the Mobile Suit Breakdown for free! on fine Podcast services everywhere and on YouTube, follow us on twitter @gundampodcast, check us out at gundampodcast.com, email your questions, comments, and complaints to gundampodcast@gmail.com.The intro music is WASP by Misha Dioxin, and the outro is Long Way Home by Spinning Ratio, both licensed under Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 license. There's more evidence to float that ship than you might think...On the Gundam podcast this week, we watch Mobile Suit Gundam episode 6, "Garma Strikes," discuss our first impressions, and provide commentary and research on: soldier psychology, inspiration for the names of Zeon ships and tech, romance between men in Japanese history, and what exactly is an acting captain? For our discussion of soldier psychology, we consulted the helpful and detailed website, Military Science Fiction.Trying to decipher the inspiration for the names of Zeon ships came down to scouring German and Japanese dictionaries on the web (our favorite online Japanese dictionaries are Jim Breen and Jisho. There are a few great resources on romantic and sexual relationships between men in Japanese history. We enjoyed Tofugu's great article "The Gay of the Samurai: All About Homosexuality, Buddhist Monks, Samurai, and the Tokugawa Middle Class". The following books were also helpful in our research: Pflugfelder, Gregory M. Cartographies of Desire: Male-Male Sexuality in Japanese Discourse, 1600-1950. University of California Press, 2007. McLelland, Mark J. Queer Japan from the Pacific War to the Internet Age. Rowman & Littlefield, 2005. Carl Waggett has been a full-time firefighter for the past 14 years, and Acting Captain for 4 of them.  After a fellow-firefighter and close friend of Carl’s ended his own life, Carl removed himself from the front line trucks only to be diagnosed with PTSD a short time afterwards. Carl says he’s learning that there are many sides to this very intelligent disorder, and would simply like to share his experiences in the hope that others understand that PTSD is more of a winnable battle then you think. Carl started his podcast, PTSD Bunker Gear For Your Brain, after his experiences with PTSD and to help other first responders.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-trauma-therapist-podcast-with-guy-macpherson-phd-inspiring-interviews-with-thought-leaders-in-the-field-of-trauma/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast? Carl Waggett is back on the podcast and this guy is amazing.I don’t say that lightly. There are some people who are able to articulate concepts and feelings in a kind of perfect, let’s-get-to-the-heart-of-the-matter way, for a particular group of people, and Carl is that person for the first responder tribe.First off, a huge thank-you to my sponsors who help me keep this thing going! CPTSD Foundation has been successfully equipping complex trauma survivors and practitioners with compassionate support, skills, and trauma-informed education since 2014. Daily Recovery Support? The Trauma Therapist | Podcast with Guy Macpherson, PhD | Inspiring interviews with thought-leaders in the field of trauma.

This week I’m proud to announce that I have a firefighter, Carl Waggett, back on the podcast. (Carl was a guest back on episode 229 of The Trauma Therapist | Podcast.) Carl’s on a mission to help others heal from PTSD. He’s got a podcast, he’s doing Facebook Live, and he’s on YouTube. With everything he’s got going on I think it’s fair to say that he’s put together a pretty amazing tour de force, and all with the goal of helping others heal, and avoiding some of the missteps he took along his journey. Carl’s been a full-time firefighter for the past 14 years, and Acting Captain for 4 of them.  After a fellow-firefighter and close friend of Carl’s ended his own life, Carl removed himself from the front line trucks only to be diagnosed with PTSD a short time afterward.
