Our Dan Kraker had talked to the owner in January when this season's winter weather was looking pretty bleak. At that time Peter McLelland shared that during his busiest time of year, he had no dog sled trips going out. “Running a sled dog business like this is a labor of love. You do it because you want to. It's great to share this with with the guests that come up. But you do not make enough money to really be able to weather this kind of disaster,” McLelland said in January. Matt McLelland, VP of Sustainability and Innovation, Covenant joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to discuss why it all comes down to unit economics when fleets are evaluating new trucking technologies such as battery electric trucks and autonomous trucks. The conversation begins with Matt discussing how Covenant is thinking about implementing battery electric trucks into their fleet. With limited range and reduced weight capacities, the right lane and freight have to be matched up to ensure a successful run. The fleet of the future is actually going to be something that is made up of a lot different pieces of equipment that reflect the different and diverse needs of our customer base. – Matt McLellandReduced capacity comes with increased cost, as battery electric trucks cost roughly 50% more then traditional diesel trucks. Factor in stubborn inflation, slim margins and a Fed Funds interest rate of 5.33%, fleets are hamstrung when it comes financing the increased cost of battery electric trucks. Is a hybrid solution the right solution? As companies look to lower their carbon emissions, could electrified trailers be the solution? Or it could be renewable diesel or B100 (pure biodiesel)?Hybrid solutions that are not full on zero-emission vehicles, that's what I think the future is. – Matt McLellandThe costs to implement low carbon, zero-emissions technologies for trucks is going to cost more. For the business model to work, that cost is going to have to passed onto the consumer. But the economic reality is, consumers will not pay more for shipping as they are used to fast free shipping commonly known as the “Amazon effect“. Could the push towards low carbon and zero-emissions trucks inadvertently accelerate the implementation and adoption of autonomous trucks? It all comes down to the unit economics. – Matt McLellandAutonomous trucks offer better unit economics than traditional trucks, and the economics only get better as the size of the fleet increases. Covenant is taking a measured approach to autonomous trucking by rolling up their sleeves and developing relationships with the developers. This approach has led to commercial relationships with Aurora and Torc. Wrapping up the conversation, Matt shares his thoughts on the future of the trucking industry.Recorded on Friday, February 9, 2023--------About The Road to AutonomyThe Road to Autonomy® is a leading source of data, insight and analysis on autonomous vehicles/trucks and the emerging autonomy economy™. January 31, 2013, a 911 call comes in. The caller tells the operator that a man has been shot. Around 9am, five shots were fired and seconds later, 3 more shots were fired. Police arrived at the crime scene swiftly and find chief assistant district attorney for the Kaufman County Criminal District Attorney's Office Mark Hasse bleeding. No traces were left at the crime scene, not even bullet casing. The only evidence, eyewitnesses. One witness said the shooter was completely dressed in black, and after firing the shots, jumped into the back seat of the white sedan and disappeared. Another witness,  according to Medium.com,  said he heard Hasse shouting loudly “No, no, I'm sorry.” Hasse dies.   Just two months after Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse is gunned down, Kaufman County Criminal District Attorney Mike McLelland, and his wife, Cynthia McLelland, plan an Easter dinner for friends and family.  Dallas police officer CJ Tomlinson is a family friend, his mother is supposed to drop off vegetables for Cynthia McLelland to prepare for the dinner, when she doesn't get the McLelland's on the phone she asks her son, Tomlinson to check on the couple. Tomlinson and his stepfather go to the McLelland home. The front door is open, shell casings are on the entryway floor. Mike and Cynthia McLelland, both have been shot dead. One of the shots was directly into Cynthia McLelland's head. Tomlinson describes the scene as a "home invasion" style assault. Mark Hasse and Mark McLelland acted as prosecutors in former judge Eric Williams' felony theft Case. That history put him on police radar. When officers checked his internet search history, they found that Williams had been actively searching for information on Mark Hasse and Mike McLelland. Documents were found on a white sedan, issued in a false name, and the login and password for an account which had been leaving anonymous messages for police about the murders was found, but there was not enough evidence to charge him with the murders.   Then came a break. An acquaintance of Eric Williams' says that he had been asked to rent a garage in his name. Police find the white sedan in the garage, as well as police uniforms, badges,  weapons, and even homemade napalm.  There were also more than 30 guns,  but there was no weapon matching the one that shot the victims. And there was still one question to be answered. If the suspect jumped into the back seat to speed away from the crime scene, who was driving? Kim Williams was driving. She was Eric Williams' wife. She confesses to the police. The pair are convicted. Eric Williams gets the death penalty, which he has appealed repeatedly.    Joining Nancy Grace Today: Judge Erleigh Wiley - on Eric Williams ‘hit list', Kaufman County Criminal District Attorney,  Author: “Target on My Back: A Prosecutor's Terrifying Tale of Life on a Hit List”   Alan Bennett - Former Assistant District Attorney, Partner at Gunter, Bennett, and Anthes, gbafirm.com  Caryn L. In 2007, Kristi McLelland went to Israel and realized that God is better than she ever knew. After studying in Egypt and Israel in 2007, Kristi's life took a turn, and she began leading biblical studies trips to Israel in 2008. Kristi is an author, professor at Williamson College, and a biblical culturalist who teaches the Bible in its historical, cultural context. Kristi's most recent book is entitled, Rediscovering Israel: A Fresh Look at God's Story in its Historical and Cultural Contexts. Kristi's study trips to Israel, Italy, Turkey, and Greece, as well as her in-person and online resources position Westerners to discover the Bible within the Middle Eastern context in which it was written. In my time with Kristi, we talk about what she experienced in Israel that helped her encounter the goodness of God in a new way. Kristi also talks about her reflections on the current situation in Israel, the relevance of the Bible in our lives today, why she believes the Bible is the greatest story there is, and how God is a God who sees his children and acts on their behalf. In this season when we reflect on the birth of Jesus, my hope is that this conversation may help us all enter more deeply into the reality of God's nearness to humanity, and to each one of us.Buy Melissa L. Nous sommes le 7 juillet 1989. Chantale Daigle part de son logement de Pointe-aux-Trembles pour se réfugier chez son père, à Chibougamau. Chantale a peur de Jean-Guy Tremblay et avec raison. Avant la séparation, elle se sentait déjà traquée : « Il devint de plus en plus dominant, excessivement jaloux et possessif, contrôlant et surveillant toutes mes allées et venues », écrit-elle. Welcome back to Gospel Spice, the podcast that adds a little spice to your everyday walk with Jesus! I'm your host, Stephanie Rousselle, and I am beyond excited for today's episode featuring the delightful Kristi McLelland. She is a well-known and loved Bible teacher, frequent Israel traveler, and Professor at Williamson College where she focuses on teacing the Bible from its historical, cultural, geographic and linguistic contexts. Needless to say, I love her work, focus, and mission! She is known for her outstanding Bible study, Jesus and Women. But now, she also just released one of my favorite books of 2023, Rediscovering Israel. If you like history and want to understand Israel in general, and Jesus in particular, through the lens of history, geography, language and culture, then this is the book for you! May I even suggest, it would be the perfect Christmas gift for someone you know! This conversation invites you into a powerful prayer journey. Learn how to embody the word of God, not just know it, as Kristi shares her deep insights from her study in Egypt and Israel. Discover the communal nature of Scripture and why it's important to be feasting saints, embodying and feasting on the word of God. Kristi and I also discuss the significance of the intertestamental period, and Jesus' celebration of Hanukkah. We explore the Jewish roots of the scriptures and the transformative power of prayer and embracing abundance. I love how Kristi McLelland appreciates the Jewish roots of the Scriptures. The intertestamental period between Malachi and Matthew is a focal point of our conversation. Kristi brilliantly compares it to preparing a nursery for Jesus' birth. It's all about setting the stage for Jesus' arrival.  Kristi McLelland's study of scripture in Egypt and Israel was a life-changing experience. She emphasizes the importance of embodying the Word rather than just knowing it. We must be "feasting saints" rather than just "reading saints." The communal nature of Scripture for the Jewish people teaches us the importance of embodying and feasting on the Word of God. As the conversation progresses, I get to connect my love for Jewish culture and food, highlighting the connection between the French language and the delightfulness of God. It's all about the senses and embracing the abundant goodness of our Creator! The imminence of God for the Jewish people is awe-inspiring. He's present in their history, in the temple, and in every aspect of their lives. Such a powerful reminder of His intimacy and closeness. In the same way, prayer is not just a passive act; it's an invitation to participate in God's restoration and renewal. Our prayers should have hands and feet, actively engaged in transforming the world around us. The Western culture's scarcity mindset is challenged in this conversation. There's an alternative philosophy of abundance that allows us to be generous and give our lives away. We have a heavenly Father who is abundantly generous to us! Living in abundance instead of scarcity allows us to move freely and lightly through the world. It's a powerful witness to those around us. We have been saved into a family and community that thrives on abundance. The resurrection is the ultimate proof of abundance. It opens the door to endless possibilities and invites us to embrace the fullness of life in Christ. What a game-changer! Jesus often surprises us and does things differently than expected, but His transformative power remains unmatched. “Tikkun Olam,” the repair of the world, is an invitation for us to actively participate in God's work. Prayer is more than just a conversation; it's a partnership with God's plans, actively contending and co-laboring with Him. The Lord's Prayer is an open invitation to actively participate in the ushering of God's kingdom here on Earth. Let's not settle for passive prayers; let's engage in bringing heaven down to earth! Kristi shares a powerful message about how walking closely with Jesus can lead to a transformation from scarcity to abundance. We discuss the importance of prayer and getting involved in repairing the world. Prayer is not just about words but an invitation to actively participate in restoration and renewal. Kristi emphasizes the philosophy of abundance and how it allows us to live freely and generously, shining as lights in a world of scarcity. We'll learn about the concept of yada, intimate knowing, and how it can deepen our relationship with God. We'll also explore the cyclical nature of time in Middle Eastern culture and how God reaches back in time to heal and restore broken things. This conversation is a reminder that our prayers are not limited to mere words. They're an embodiment of our desire to be involved in what we're praying for. Let's pray with intention and act with conviction. Join us as we journey together through the pages of Scripture, uncovering hidden treasures and expanding our knowledge and experience of God. Get ready to be challenged, inspired, and equipped to live out your faith with hands and feet firmly rooted in the abundance of God's love. So grab your favorite beverage, get cozy, and get ready for an episode that will ignite a fire in your heart and draw you closer to the heart of Jesus. Don't forget to follow us on social media, because trust me, you won't want to miss out on the Christ-centered content we'll be sharing. Let's get started with the delightful Kristi McLelland on today's episode of Gospel Spice! Key takeaways from this conversation 1️⃣ Embodying the Word: Kristi emphasizes the importance of not just knowing Scripture, but embodying it. She draws upon biblical figures like Deborah, Ezekiel, and Jeremiah, who spoke about eating and embodying the Word of God. As Christians, we are called to be feasting saints, not just reading saints. 2️⃣ Prayer as Partnership: Prayer is not simply a request to God, but an opportunity to actively partner with Him in the restoration of the world. Kristi highlights the Jewish perspective on prayer, viewing it as contending with God and actively participating in bringing prayers to pass. Prayer should have hands and feet, actively engaging in the fulfillment of what is prayed for. 3️⃣ Abundance over Scarcity: Western culture often operates from a mindset of scarcity, resulting in competition and disunity. However, Kristi presents an alternative philosophy of abundance, rooted in the understanding of God's generosity. Living in abundance allows us to move through the world with sufficiency, generosity, and a powerful witness to others. MEET KRISTI MCLELLAND Professor. Teacher. Biblical Culturalist. She has a Masters in Christian Education from Dallas Theological Seminary and has dedicated her life to teaching people how to study the Bible. After studying in Israel and Egypt in 2007 and discovering that God is better than she ever knew, Kristi has been teaching the Bible through a Middle Eastern lens, in its historical, geographical, cultural and linguistic context. Kristi teaches about the goodness of God, experienced through table fellowship, practicing hospitality and collaborative wisdom. During her years as a professor at Williamson College and Director of Christian Education and Women's Ministry at local churches, Kristi has taught and shepherded thousands. Since 2008 she has led biblical studies trips to Israel and studied and trained under Dr. Jim Martin, Rabbi Ken Alpren and world-renowned Israeli archaeologist Dr. Gabi Barkay. The Bible is a collection of ancient texts written in different historical, cultural, and literary contexts. To interpret it accurately, we need to consider factors like the historical background, the author's intent, the audience, and the literary genre of each passage. Ignoring context can lead to misinterpretation and misunderstanding of the Bible's teachings. But this is easier said than done. Bestselling author and professor Kristi McLelland is on the show today helping us see the Bible through a new lens, from beginning to end. She shares about her book Rediscovering Israel, and helps us experience the living God and His Word as never before! Matt McLelland, VP of Sustainability and Innovation, Covenant joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to discuss why Covenant always has a seat at the table as it relates to new technologies and how they are preparing for autonomous trucks. The conversation begins with Matt discussing how he is currently thinking about autonomous trucks as it relates to over-the-road operations. We figured that we needed to have a seat at the table, because autonomy was going to be a way to potentially augment our business. We have been involved since the very beginning. – Matt McLellandHaving a seat at the table and understanding the business is highly important to Matt as he shares insights from his recent four-day ride-along with a professional over-the-road driver. It gives you more context and experience into that whole kind of analogy of walk a mile in somebody else's shoes. – Matt McLellandAs part of their having a seat at the table strategy, Covenant has a partnership with Aurora where the two companies are actively exploring the integration of Aurora's virtual driver (Aurora Horizon) into Covenant's operations. It's not just from a technical perspective, it is also from a operations perspective. In order for autonomous trucks to scale, there has to be standardized operations around launching autonomous trucks from different sites. This is because there will be different technicians and employees at each site operating autonomous trucks for a variety of companies as the depots/launch sites will most likely be shared. Once the industry agrees on a shared launch strategy, the next issue that the industry is going to have to agree on is fuel. Diesel and the value proposition of autonomy is asset utilization, making that truck stay on the road to cover the most miles possible as efficiently as possible. – Matt McLellandWith the clear value proposition that diesel has for autonomous trucking, society is shifting to low-carbon solutions, opening the door for renewable diesel. While renewable diesel offers a bridge solution, there is not enough renewable diesel in the market today to support the wide-scale adoption. It's the perfect bridge to zero emissions, its a solution available today that will get us to a much better place then where we are [today]. – Matt McLellandWhile it's a solution, it comes at a premium cost to shippers that is being coined the “green premium”. The green premium is opening the door to autonomy as an autonomous truck can operate longer hours with less idling time and more efficiently. Covenant estimates that autonomous trucks can operate 8% to 12% more efficiently per truck. On Covenant's autonomous journey today, today the company has partnerships with Aurora and Torc Robotics as they actively prepare for a future with autonomy. Wrapping up the conversation, Matt shares his thoughts on sustainability.
