What is as hypnotising as a beautiful goldfish circling its bowl, but can help you understand the way a virus can spread? The answer is one of the beautiful interactive simulations produced by VisualPDE ! In this podcast we talk to Benjamin Walker from University College London, and to Adam Townsend and Andrew Krause from Durham University, who together created this online solver of partial differential equations.  Such equations describe how quantities change over space and time and therefore used throughout science to describe processes that play out in the real world — from the transmission of airborne viruses to the flow of water during a flood. Ben, Andrew and Adam tell us about their motivation for building VisualPDE and what they can do with it. We met Ben, Andrew and Adam through the Mathsci-comm network for people who communicate maths and data science to non-expert audiences. As you can see by playing with the simulation below, VisualPDE  is a great tool for communicating maths research to non-experts, as well as allowing mathematicians to quickly simulate what their mathematical models can tell them. Adam is also part of the team behind the brilliant Chalkdust, a magazine for the mathematically curious. Why not order the latest issue for a Christmas gift? Play with the simulation! Suppose that lots of people are sitting in a sealed room and one of them is infectious. We'll assume that the infectious person is constantly producing virus-laden particles that spread out around them and lose their potency over time. The simulation below shows what this might look like. The colour corresponds to the concentration or amount of the virus in the air. With VisualPDE, we're not just limited to watching a simulation: we can interact with it too. Clicking in the room will introduce some viral particles to the air, as if someone with an infection had coughed (coughing is actually a lot more complicated and is the focus of lots of research). Try clicking to see what difference a cough can make. Though each cough introduces some virus to the room, it looks like it quickly decays away until we can't even tell it was there. So, does this mean we shouldn't be worried about a cough? To explore this further, let's look at the probability (or chance) of getting an infection, which is related but not equal to the virus concentration. Specifically, we'll look at the chance of catching the virus assuming that you'd been in the same location for the duration of the simulation. With VisualPDE, we can do this by switching to the Probability View by pressing and choosing "Probability". Now for the goldfish. People don't always stay still in the middle of rooms. Unsurprisingly, the movement of an infected individual can have a big impact on the spread of a virus. The next simulation is set up so that the source of the infection moves around the room, as if they were a waiter going between tables in a restaurant, perhaps. The air conditioner is turned off, so that the air in the room is still.   The Probability View shows the build-up of a ring of likely infections as the infectious person circles the room. A quick look at the Concentration View shows their circular path, leaving a trail of viral particles behind them. I this episode I am delighted to continue my conversation with Adam Townsend, founder of Viewit DataLabs Limited. Today we look beyond the data and consider the drivers for improving patient outcomes in hospital. We consider why is the system driven away from improving patient outcomes before people get to the hospital. One of the metrics that we talk about are hospital stays for respiratory conditions and diabetes that are less than 24 hours long – in the UK at least 300, 000 such hospital stays have been recorded. Many, possibly all, could have been prevented. We talk about the dilemmas for the healthcare system of balancing reactive and proactive stances. We also talk about the power of AI when coupled with the kind of data lakes that Adam has created. Adam talks as well about the fascinating journey that led him to create Viewit DataLabs

There is a lot of discussion about what is happening with our public services, a lot of newspaper columns are dedicated to attention grabbing headlines, but in this episode we dig into what is really going on. I am very pleased to introduce Adam Townsend, founder of Viewit DataLabs Limited. We talk about what the data really tells us, and from the data we can see that the NHS system is getting less efficient. This ‘ground truth' enables us to think about what is really going on. It is not that demand on the NHS is increasing exponentially, as may be commonly believed. The facts are that there is some increase in demand coupled with a less efficient system. Lower efficiency can be due to fatigue in the workforce of perhaps perverse incentives that encourage people to do things like discharge people early, knowing that those people will be back in the hospital again within 24 hours. We talk about the true motivations of our systems.

Now more than ever, the music scene is in dire need of some raw high-energy rock and roll. And just in time, the Nigel Dupree Band has come to the rescue. Hailing from Kennesaw, Georgia and comprised of members Nigel Dupree (vocals, guitar), Josh Hilton (bass), and Adam Townsend (drums), the group manages to be a throwback of sorts - musically and visually - to such renowned goliaths as KISS, Def Leppard, AC/DC, and Bon Jovi. When asked how the Nigel Dupree Band fits in with current rock bands, the group's frontman exclaims, "I don't think we do at all! We're definitely going against the grain. We're throwing back to the '80s a little bit, and mixing in our own thing. We have a modern sound and we're not indulging ourselves as much as some bands with the stereotypical ?80s image. It's just where we find our influence, and that's what we like to stick with." Another deciding factor in Nigel choosing his path of rock n' roll is that he's been around some of the genre's biggest names since he was a tiny tot - his dad is none other than Jesse James Dupree, the frontman of Jackyl. "I was fortunate enough to grow up on a tour bus," explains Nigel. "On the road with Aerosmith, the Damn Yankees, Ted Nugent, ZZ Top, and all these great bands. It really helped me set a direction with what I wanted to do in life - be a rock star." Starting out initially as a band between three high school friends, they quickly realized there was an undeniable chemistry between the members. Dupree describes Hilton as "Our little bit of KISS. He has the make-up and a rock star personality," and Townsend as "A mix between a young Terri Bozzio and Tommy Lee." Jesse soon took it upon himself to oversee the recording of the tunes his son had penned, which landed the trio a deal with Mighty Loud Records, and a debut album, Attraction. "It just comes from wanting to hear good simplicity in a rock song," points out Nigel about the album's background. "So many bands today just overthink what rock n' roll is. We're setting out to remind people that rock n' roll is about having fun and playing some good music." Even though their debut album is just dropping on the masses, the Nigel Dupree Band has been honing their live act for some time now, opening up for some of rock's heaviest hitters. "We've been prepping ourselves for the long road ahead for the last two to three years. We've played with Jackyl, Ace Frehley, Saliva, Black Stone Cherry. From those years of touring, and great connections, we're currently setting up a summer tour which will be starting in early July." And what can fans expect from the Nigel Dupree Band live experience? Nigel explains, "So many people are skeptical of going out and spending the money on seeing a live band, and we want people to get their money's worth. So we go over the top. No matter where we're playing, in our minds, we're playing to a sold out Madison Square Garden because that's what we want the people watching it to receive. That's what we base the band on - we put on a great live show, high energy." And lastly, where does Nigel see the group going in the future? "All the way to the top! Success comes with happiness - success and happiness to me is people enjoying what they do and create artistically. If people are into it and love what we do that is success to me. And that's exactly where I want to take it." As evidenced by Attraction, the Nigel Dupree Band has certainly taken a mighty loud n' proud first step. Thanks Nigel YOU ROCK BRO....
