In her conversation with Albert, the two discuss how the water is Liv's happy place where she can disconnect from school and life. Liv speaks about her use of “aquatic prosthetics” for paddling out when she is surfing, and Albert and Liv chew on just what keeps them going out to chase crazy waves day after day. Liz also highlights her passion for animal advocacy and conservation, sharing the various career paths she is considering after graduating from college. Adaptive Surfing with Swell Surf Foot The Ocean is healing. The Mana (power) of the ocean has a way of grounding you and setting you free so you can soar. It's an unbelievable feeling! Just before my 1 year anniversary of my amputation I traveled to Kauai and tried my hand at surfing. I hadn't been able to get in the ocean, or really any water, for over 5 years due to surgeries and my inability to maneuver because of my injury. I was excited, and nervous. Once I learned the basics I found a rhythm to surfing, a rhythm to the ocean. I felt the energy it had, and I felt that energy surge through me. I no longer felt nervous, I felt carefree and alive, and I felt that ANYTHING was possible! Today I talk with Zach Samalonis, the co-creator/inventor of Swell Surf Foot. He and Yuhan Zhang started this endeavor for a college course. They talked with surfers in the amputee community to get the data they needed to create a prototype, then designed, created and then got a few of their original designs into the hands of amputees ready and willing to try it and give feedback. I was fortunate enough to be one of them. This is my original surf leg and foot alongside the Swell Surf Foot prototype. Today we discuss how this adaptive equipment came to life from thoughts and research to designing and creating. What amazes me is that neither Zach or Yuhan are amputees, but they were charged with finding a problem that needed to be solved and a community that needed their help for their capstone project their senior year at Thomas Jefferson University. The Swell Surf Foot can help bring surfing to more amputees and also brings those people to the ocean for healing. This low cost, water-proof prosthetic was developed with an increased ankle mobility to allow for correct surfing mechanics. In a world where most adaptive surfers have repurposed and fashioned make-shift surf feet because there was nothing on the market, this was filling a need, and want, in our amputee community. What a beautiful gift their innovation is for adaptive surfers around the world. Their dedication solving a problem and filling a need is genuine. In a world where big companies rule the market, it is awesome to see individuals creating and making their mark. Listen in to hear Zach talk about their inspiration, production, and dreams for the future of their product. Find them online, give them a follow, and reach out to them if you'd like to try their product in it's next gen status when it comes out. Thank you Zach for your time today and sharing your story. I look forward to putting on your surf foot again soon and feeling the freedom and energy of the ocean. Thanks to you and Yuhan, I have found a foot that brings comfortability, grip, and steadiness to my surfing sessions. The ocean is a place for healing and finding freedom. The Swell Surf Foot is a step in the right direction to getting more amputees out, active, and giving them the peace they need to move forward. Have a blessed week and make sure you subscribe and share so that you and the people you care about don't miss the amazing people coming up next on this podcast; each making a difference in the lives of amputees everywhere with their creativity, ingenuity, and dedication! Check them out on Instagram @surfwithswell or at Zachsamdesigns.com As always, Be Healthy, Be Happy, Be YOU!!! Much love,

Wavemaker' Nick Hounsfield was introduced to surfing by his father in the 1970s and soon developed a passion for it. He started to see surfing as a tool for having conversations around wellbeing, which led to him founding The Wave – an inland surfing destination for people of all abilities and backgrounds. Nick's idea was to create a space where people could connect with each other, themselves, and with nature. He champions ‘blue health' – the physical and mental health benefits of being in and around water. The Wave opened in Bristol in 2019 using ground-breaking technology, and Nick is planning on expanding the concept across the UK.Nick has been involved with supporting and growing the para-surfing community, and The Wave hosted the English Adaptive Surf Championships in 2020 and 2021. Nick experienced first-hand the role surfing can play in overcoming health issues when he suffered a series of strokes in February 2020. Luckily he has made a good recovery but recognises that things could have been so much worse. The experience has made him more determined than ever to create a safe, sustainable space to promote health in body and mind.Listen as we get into the details of how Nick was inspired to create The Wave and the lessons he's learned from his own health challenges.

For many years in Australia there have been surfers that have had to overcome some sort of disability to be able to get back into the ocean and surf. These surfers have proven themselves to be resilient and creative by adapting their own techniques and equipment to achieve this with help from their friends in the surfing community. This is the story of two of them.WA surfer Sean Catlin had been a surfer all his life but was left paraplegic after a motor vehicle accident in 2014. He felt like he had lost his identity in a way when he initially thought he couldn't surf again. The 40-year-old who lives just north of Perth, said his return to surfing had been encouraged by viewing footage of an Adaptive Surfing event, and social media contact with surfers in a similar predicament.

Lera was born in Russia with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, a severe condition that affects joints in her legs. She was adopted and moved to the US at nearly two years old, where she used forearm crutches as her main form of mobility. When she grew into her teenage years, she had been told life would get harder in the future, with mobility getting more restrictive for her. At 14 years old she decided to double-amputate both of her legs above the knee. It wasn't long before Lera was introduced to adaptive sports! Lera was selected to play for the 2019-2020 women's US national sled hockey team after only two years of playing the sport, Lera is making her mark in the sport and is hoping to help get woman's Sled Hockey a Paralympic sport (like the males is!). Lera has ambitions of competing in the Paralympic's at Nordic Skiing! On top of this Lera also competes in Hand Cycling and Adaptive Surfing! To follow Lera's journey on instagram follow - LERA_0415
