'Secret Love' Song Release with Norman 'Ace' West, Annalisa & Julian Pavone

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 8, 2021 78:11

This week on The Roe Show I sit down for a second time with Julian and Annalisa Pavone to discuss the music industry, but this time from a different perspective. They are joined by award winning music producer, Norman 'Ace' West to talk about their first single, 'Secret Love,' that was co-produced by Julian. Annalisa does both lead and back-up vocals while Julian drums and raps. It's an R&B style of song and is the first single in what will become and exciting career for them both. "The Pavone siblings have so much to offer, as Annalisa exercises the strength that only a seasoned vocalist would be able to execute," says Ace. "Much like her prodigy brother, who is a genius in the studio, Annalisa adapted to the creative process instantly." Ace has worked with some of the world's greatest musical legends, including Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker, Aliyah, and currently Annalisa Pavone. As Ace said it best, "We are putting the aces in their places," about Detroit stars he has partnered with to create incredible music and lasting legacies – whose names all coincidentally start with the letter A. "I believe this is a good indication for what Annalisa's success will look like in the years to come." Recorded at the PAC-3 Recording Studio, located in Dearborn, Michigan, "Secret Love" is jam packed with well-known names in the music business. The song was engineered and mastered by Carl B, whose portfolio of work includes collaborations with Producer R.J. Rice from Barak Entertainment, and artists Michael Jackson, Eazy E, Ginuwine, Timabaland, Shaq, and Ice Cube. The song also features talented musicians Peter Carbone on lead guitar and Kenny Hasenauer on bass. Not only was the track itself touched by talented artists, but so was the cover art and music video. The "Secret Love" cover art was created by renowned artist Tony Roko, who won the title as Detroit's Best Fine Artist for five consecutive years, according to HOUR magazine. Roko has painted commissions for Jay Leno, Lady GaGa, and many museums. The Future of Girl Movement with Seneca Schwartz

This week on The Roe Show, I sit down with Seneca Schwartz, a young #GirlFlipper who does a mix between Freestyle Trampoline and Parkour. She talks to me about the role of girls in Freestyle sports. Currently not many women take up these more extreme sports and even though brands and industry leaders would like to see more Girl Flippers, the numbers remain low. The same was true for other freestyle sports such as snowboarding or skateboarding back in the 70's so it may just be a matter of time until before women feel comfortable in this new space. Seneca talks to me about gender equality and how gym owners can promote equal flipping for men and women. She also talks to me about her nervousness in an all-boys program, which is still the norm today. She has a few great thoughts on how gyms can speed up that process and make the entry for women easier. Seneca also made a film that was featured on The Film Girl Festival called LIKE A GIRL; a short film on girl empowerment through Parkour and Free running. "LIKE A GIRL is not a representation of who I am. It is the representation of the change we believe we can make...The Future of Female Movement. Freestyle Flipper Peter Landerholm Explains GTramp

This week on The Roe Show, I sit down with Peter Landerholm, freestyle trampoline athlete and 'gtramper' as the community calls themselves. This "Sport Born on Instagram" as coined by the LA Times, has rapidly grown into a global phenomenon and Peter has been a the heart of it for many years, despite his young age. We discuss his life altering injury a year ago and how it changed his outlook on life when he broke his neck during a training session. I recommend that all parents of kids who flip or do gtramp watch this episode with their child, as it will give you an honest insight into this sport; including the dangers and what you can do to try and prevent them. This episode will hopefully make young flippers think twice about "going for it" when attempting new tricks they have not been properly trained to do. Peter Landerholm is 17 years old and is from Seattle Washington. In his own words, here is his story: "Ever since I was a kid I loved being air born and upside down so finding gtramp was the perfect match for my love of acrobatics. My goals for the future are to keep pushing my limits and being able to flip for a long time in my future. When I broke my neck in 2 places I definitely thought my flipping career was over but as I recovered and got healthier my passion never left me. So now I'm just gonna see where this sport takes me and I look forward for the future." Thank you Peter for sharing your story and giving us all your wonderful insights into this sport. We talk about the many benefits of using trampolines for therapy across all spectrum of special needs and he explains the Rebound Therapy program along with some fun stories and what he has learned working with both young children and adults alike. The phrase 'Rebound Therapy' was coined by the founder, Eddy Anderson in 1969 to describe the use of trampolines in providing opportunities for movement, therapeutic exercise and recreation for people across the whole spectrum of special needs. The program uses trampolines to provide therapeutic exercises to people with a wide variety of disabilities and additional needs. The therapy involves using the moving bed of the trampoline to promote movement in the participant. By carrying out basic through to highly technical physiotherapy techniques on the trampoline, the therapy can provide many therapeutic and physiological benefits: Facilitate and promote movement and balance, Improve fitness, Increase or decrease muscle tone, Help relax the participant, Improve sensory integration, Improve concentration and even improve communication skills. Professor Ronald A. Smith on the NCAA & Gymnastics

This week on The Roe Show, I sit down with Professor Ronald A. Smith, a leading sports historian. We talk the NCAA and how it came to be and the not so well known strategies behind used to create it. We also learn from Prof. Smith about the controversial NCAA uprising of the athletes who began to sue because they felt they were technically 'working' as athletes, yet not getting paid. He explains how they were not compensated if they were hurt, even though through their scholarships they were under contract to 'work' for the University. Ron is a professor emeritus of sports history at Penn State University and the author of several books, including Sports and Freedom: The Rise of Big-Time College Athletics and Play-by-Play: Radio, Television, and Big-Time College Sport. The former is an examination of the controversy over paying men and women college athletes, which persuasively argues that, for all the NCAA's insistence on amateurism today, college sports have never been amateur. We discuss many of the strategies that the NCAA has used and why and it's controversial history. Ron also talks about how the NCAA has come under scrutiny for the way they treat their athletes and a few of the ways they are changing for the better. I thank him for this insightful interview and his candid comments and discussions. The Sport of Slacklining with Mickey Wilson

This week on The Roe Show, I sit down with Mickey Wilson, veteran Slackline expert and extreme athlete. We discuss the sport and how to learn it, the equipment used and how to compete. He has some alarming stories and some great insights as well. Towards the end we talk about the future of this niche sport and compare it to some of the more classical sports. We have a look into the pros and cons of each sport, traditional versus freestyle, so if you're looking to learn about another great freestyle sport, this is the podcast for you. I first met Mickey a few years ago when we were performing for a client in the middle east and he even tried to teach me to slackline! Mickey has competed at numerous slackline competitions since 2011 and is currently ranked 11th in world in tricklining by the World Slackline Federation. He landed the first ever double backflip dismount, and was the first to land a backflip to chest bounce in competition. He was also the second person to land a 'Luke Skywalker' on a highline. His longest slackline send stands at 500 feet (152 m) and his longest highline send is 230 feet (70 m on sight!). Mickey is also an avid skier, whitewater kayaker and climber. He has his skydiving "A" license and he plans to work toward base jumping and eventually base jumping from highlines! Mickey was also called a hero when he rescued a man caught hanging from his neck by his backpack in a ski lift accident in 2017. The man almost certainly would have died were it not for the heroics of Mickey, who appeared on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show,' in 2017 to talk about the daring rescue. The History of the Trampoline with Ron Munn

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 2, 2021 121:32

Ron Munn, this weeks special guest on The Roe Show, has an intimate relationship to trampoline history because he actually was there watching the sport develop, all the way to seeing it enter the Olympics in 2000. Ronnie worked hand-in-hand with George Nissen, the inventor of the Trampoline. Larry Griswold is the co-inventor of the trampoline and Ronnie gives us a complete timeline of how the equipment was created with Larry and George, how it was then distributed all over the world and how the competitive aspect of the sport was developed over the years. Ronnie discusses how the world's first trampoline park was created back in the late 1950's and how that was the beginning of a brand new competitive sport. We discuss how scoring systems for trampoline have changed over time and Ronnie even gives us the inside-scoop about how Double Mini Trampoline was developed. He even gives us the story about how they put a trampoline on a Pyramid. We then go onto discuss how he and George would travel around the world promoting trampoline in the 60's and 70's by opening up trampoline training centres, even in far flung places like South Africa. Just like they way I hit the road years ago to spread the word of Freestyle Trampoline, as a derivative of traditional trampoline, I noticed that I was following the same path as Ronnie did with George many years ago. A native of Amarillo, Texas Ron Munn began his trampoline career at the age of 12 under the watchful eye of well-known coach, Nard Cazzell. He won the 1956 National AAU trampoline title while a 15-year old sophomore in high school, and once again as a freshman on the University of Michigan gymnastics team in 1959. During these years he was also named a member of the AAU All-American Gymnastics Team, and in 1959 won the Gold Medal in trampoline at the Pan American Games. With a long career in the sport and the industry of trampoline, there is nobody out there who knows more about the history of this sport than Ronnie and Dagmar, George Nissen's daughter. In 2001, Ronnie became a World Acrobatic Society Legend as was inducted into their Hall of Fame. WAS, as it is known, originated from a gathering of college gymnastics and trampoline friends for George's birthday, that spawned the creation of the non-profit group that inducts all acrobatic discipline leaders & legends each year in Las Vegas at their annual convention. A huge thank you to Ronnie and his wife Dagmar, George Nissen's daughter, for contributing to this educational program with their wonderful historical photos and videos! Indoor Skydiving with Inka & Rafa

This week on The Roe Show I interview two outstanding athletes in the freestyle sport of Indoor Skydiving (Body Flying) - Inka Tiitto and Rafael Schwaiger. We talk about this unique sport, and how it has evolved over the years, evolving from Skydiving, how to train it and how it has become it's own unique niche sport. Inka Tiitto, crowned FAI Indoor Skydiving Freestyle World Champion in 2015, born in Finland, age 29, a true inspiration to all flyers out there! Indoor Sky Dancer Inka Tiitto creates freestyle flying routines to music - all in a vertical wind tunnel! As Indoor Skydiving World Champion 2015 and World Cup Winner 2016 in freestyle, Inka Tiitto is one of the top name in the sport of bodyflight. She drives to create esthetic and physically challenging flying choreographies in the airstream. Inka draws influence for routines from her experience in dancing, yoga, acrobatics and performing arts. At the moment, she travels frequently around the world to train, compete, coach and perform. She loves to share her knowledge about bodyflying and offers coaching for all levels of indoor skydivers from beginners to competing athletes. Rafael (called Rafa) was born in Fürth, Germany. His affinity for movement as a child was a precursor for so many things, his hunger for understanding the body, its movements, capabilities and limitations. After exercising an insane variety of sports from all elements in his youth, the most fascinating ones were the ones where speed and efficiency in combination with balance came together (just like in flying). At the age of 18 he discovered Skydiving (though he was interested in it since he was a child) and what came with it – Indoor skydiving / Bodyflying. He immediately realized what was possible in the air and made it his mission to understand flying in its most meticulous way both physically and mentally. Influenced by a few individuals that are still leading forces in the sport, including his Teammate and colleague Fabian Ramseyer, a true master of the sport who taught him his early basics and several years later passed a lot of his knowledge in teaching on to him. Rafa continues to learn from his Mentor and the two now teach together and form the probably strongest alliance of coaches in the sport. She has over 2.2 million fans on TikTok and is also popular on Instagram. We discuss how she came to work for a cruise line, what life is like as a performer living on the road and what is the lifestyle of a travelling and touring performer. If that sounds like the ultimate dream job, it is. Or at least, it is according to Sydney Brown. And she would know -- it has been her life for the past six years. The 25-year-old Canadian has worked for Royal Caribbean as an acrobat and performer since 2011 and has spent the better part of the past year working in "The Fine Line" on The Harmony of the Seas, traveling throughout Europe and the Caribbean. Growing up in Greensville, Ontario, just outside of Toronto, Canada, Sydney was a talented and dedicated gymnast. She started in the sport when she was at just a year-and-a-half old, and showed promise at an early age. She began competing and winning regional meets at age 8. But after an ACL, MCL and meniscus injury at age 14 she left artistic gymnastics and focused on power tumbling, a sport that was easier on her knees because of the softer floor. It was a natural transition for her and she began competing almost immediately on the international stage for Canada. In 2009, she placed fourth at the World Age Group Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia -- just months after re-tearing her MCL and meniscus -- and she won the 17-plus age group at the Pan American Championships in 2010. The Flying Trapeze With Richie Gaona

In this episode of The Roe Show, I talk with Richie Gaona, trapeze artist, stuntman, coach and a member of the world renowned "Flying Gaona's" Trapeze family of acrobats. We discuss what it was like to be part of a circus family growing up, how he teaches trapeze to young artists and how he became involved in the stunt business. Richie once gave me a trapeze lesson and it was a ton of fun and much harder than it might look!! Richie grew up in Venice, Florida, attending Epiphany Catholic School and Venice High School (Class of 1976). His family worked with Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus during most of that time period. Venice was the Winter home of the Circus during that time. The Gaona family actually lived in Venice before being hired by Ringling Brothers, not known by the home town Circus, and were recruited while they were touring Europe. The Flying Gaonas - father Victor Gaona, sons Armando Gaona, Tito Gaona and Richie Gaona, sister Chela Gaona and cousin Lalo Gaona - are one of the greatest trapeze acts of all time. Known as the First Family of the Air, they received the prestigious Golden Clown Award as top performers at the Monte Carlo International Circus Festival, presented by The Royal Family of Monaco. The Flying Gaonas are circus royalty. For decades, the Mexican family of trapeze flyers wowed the world over with their flawless form and extraordinary grace. Born into a circus family that traces its roots back to the Circo Gaona y León in Mexico, the trapeze family had in Victor Gaona Murillo a natural leader. Three of his kids would first develop a trampoline act called the Titos. Together, Chela, Mando, and Tito mastered the trampoline and would soon be practicing on the trapeze in their spare time. Richie is known for performing his amazing stunts and also as a stunt rigger in movies such as; Desperado (1995), Clear and Present Danger (1994) & How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)... to name a few. His most current project is Emerald Run (2020). Derik, besides running his St. Louis legal practice, is also a personal training coach, health & fitness expert and legal council. There are not a lot of lawyers out there who can add MMA fighter and television sports competitor to their resume, but then again there are not a lot of lawyers like Derik Scott of St. Louis, Mo. Scott, a graduate of Lindbergh High School, Lindenwood University and Baylor School of Law had his network television debut last year as a contestant on The Rock's new highly publicized competition series The Titan Games. Scott, who recently moved to Los Angeles said he was trying out for season 10 of American Ninja Warrior when he found out about The Titan Games. He was still in the running for American Ninja Warrior but once he heard about the new show he switched gears. He even holds a Guinness record with his brother Zeke. “It was the most backflips on a Swiss ball between two people in one minute,” he said. "The crazy thing about that record-setting feat was that a television network in China contacted them to do a similar competition and Zeke was unable to do it but Shaun was able to fill in. Shaun and I both flew separately to China and met each other there, never having even practiced together, but prepared in our minds to perform it in front the crowd and on television." Derik, with his background in gymnastics and trampoline was also a judge at the 2019 GTGamesUS in California, where he met the #gtramp community for the first time. It was an incredible experience to see what these kids could do on a trampoline. SPORTS IN SPACE MEETS EXTREME TRAMPOLINING! This week on THE ROE SHOW I interview Space Games Federation (SGF) Founder Linda Rheinstein. In this episode, Linda and I delve into the exciting topic of #SportsInSpace which is all about inclusivity (that is #EqualSpace!) how to get sports into space on the International Space Station and her initiatives to bring 'equal sports' into outer space. For over four decades, Linda Rheinstein has been a pioneer and force for change across multiple industries, including all aspects of entertainment and sports broadcasting. She has devoted the past decade exclusively to championing Equal SpaceTM, a multi-faceted approach to ensure Space is accessible and exciting for all. A true entrepreneur, Linda has launched five companies during her career and had a hand in the success of several others. Her career started in 1979 with Autographics, supplying on-air graphics and technical animations for all major television and sports networks. It was here that Linda began honing her technical and creative skills, playing a key role in the development of new technologies such as constant clock and score, and the look and feel for the launch of Fox Sports. Linda went on to found 'On Air On Line,' a company devoted to integrating on-air broadcasting with online technology for major events such as the Academy Awards, Super Bowls, the Olympics, Grammy Awards and beyond. Her ground-breaking work has earned her 5 Emmy Awards and dozens of other industry accolades for producing, graphics, and technology. Linda's distinguished contributions to this field were recognized in 2017 when she was inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame. Rheinstein's current venture, Space Games Federation®, is the first International governing and sanctioning body for competitions played in zero and micro-gravity. Growing up behind the walls of JPL and NASA Space Programs, she developed a passion for space at a young age. Linda got a front row seat to numerous NASA space missions in Houston, thanks to family friend “Uncle” Gene Cernan, the last man on the Moon. This late NASA astronaut was one of her inspirations, a role model, and an early supporter of Space Games®. Space Games Federation merges Linda's history of success in sports, entertainment, and technology with her passion for space. Her commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and collaboration drives her mission to bring sports to space to create “Equal SpaceTM” and usher in a new era of sports. The absence of gravity truly levels the playing field so that people of all ages, genders, and abilities can compete together. This revolutionary work is paving the way for the future – today. In addition to her professional achievements, Linda, has also gained widespread recognition through advocacy. Most notably, she founded and funded the iDoggiebagTM Foundation, a not-for-profit entity that initiated a campaign to bring FDA regulation to the pet food industry. Her most recent work includes advocating for discrimination against service animals, and spearheading a grassroots campaign to award the Nobel Peace Prize to the International Space Station. Indeed, Linda Rheinstein is a powerful force for innovation, progress, and a better future. In fact, Space Games Federation is teaming up with Greg Roe and the Freestyle Trampoline Association (FTA) to bring extreme trampolining to space. Stay tuned and follow us for updates because we are just getting started! This week we feature Ross Rebagliati, the FIRST Gold Medalist in Olympic Snowboarding history. Not only was he the first to win gold in the emerging new sport back in 1998 in Nagano, Japan, he was also the first to lose his medal, then get it back again. For past 22 years, Rebagliati tried to distance himself from the bizarre sequence of events—and the 17.8 nanograms of marijuana that triggered a series of serious and complicated events.  We discuss the aftermath and how it nearly ended him. Twenty two years later, he realizes he will always be known as "the pot-smoking snowboarder dude who nearly lost Olympic Gold," but he's come to terms with it. It's an odd legacy, but at least he isn't afraid of it anymore. That was just the beginning of an Olympic drama like none other. We discuss the sport, how the drama of his temporary loss of his gold medal affected him, what the aftermath was like and where he is today.  It's a very insightful interview into the life of an athlete in an emerging new sport and how it can go so wrong in the blink of an eye. Rebagliati began competing as a downhill skier, but took an interest in snowboarding and at age 16, taught himself to snowboard. He turned professional in the 1991–92 season, winning the Canadian Amateur Snowboard Championship in 1991 and the US Open and European Championships in 1994. He won the world giant slalom title at Sestriere, Italy, in 1996.  In both 1996 and 1997 won the world super-giant slalom title at Whistler, Canada. His crowning achievement was his Olympic gold medal at Nagano in 1998 in the first-ever snowboarding event held at a Winter Games. Because of his fearlessness and prior experience, he was able to overcome the fierce weather that came in during the first and second runs of the event. However, three days later the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that Rebagliati had tested positive for marijuana and stripped him of his medal. Rebagliati adamantly insisted that he had not used marijuana since 1997 and had most likely been exposed to it secondhand during a party held for him by his friends prior to his departure for Nagano. The Canadian Olympic Association appealed the decision and five days later he won back the gold medal, as he was reinstated by the Court of Arbitration in Sport. Marijuana was a banned substance on the FIS (International Ski Federation) list, but not a banned substance on the IOC list. Critics of snowboarding felt that such antics were to be expected from athletes in this new sport with its young following and chastised the IOC for allowing the event into the Games. Others, however, chose to praise Rebagliati for his calmness under pressure and his unrelenting loyalty to his friends. This week on The Roe Show I interview Freestyle Equestrian Athlete, Coach & Olympian, Cindy Ishoy. We discuss her philosophy on coaching, training young horses for competition, how to reach excellence and how she changed the freestyle dressage mentality with her revolutionary routine in a very traditional sport, when she included the pop song, Candy Shop, by 50 Cent in her freestyle. We discuss more traditional sports like gymnastics and equestrian, which both came from a military background, and what the future might hold for them both. We also discuss the relationship between a horse and rider and how they have to work together as a team. Cindy began her riding career in Germany as a young child, but it didn't take her long to excel at the sport. As a teenager, she started turning in outstanding results for Canada. She was a member of the gold medal team and placed fourth individually at the 1971 Pan Am Games in Cali, Colombia. A year later she was the youngest equestrian competitor at the Munich Olympics, at age 20. In 1979, she became the first Canadian to win an international dressage Grand Prix event in England. In 1980 Cindy was selected to the Canadian team for the Moscow Olympics but because the Games were boycotted, she completed in alternate Games in the Netherlands. She was seventh in the 1986 World Championships and second at the 1988 World Cup in the Netherlands. A member of the bronze medal winning Canadian dressage TEAM at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, she was also fourth individually. Cindy also competed in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Her outstanding career included one more Olympic selection, in Athens, in 2004. As if her career wasn't brilliant enough, she might have achieved even more, because in 1989, her great Hanoverian partner ‘Dynasty' died from colic at the age of 12, still in the peak of his career. But she would have two other very good horses. ‘Dakar' went to Barcelona in 1992 and ‘Proton' at Athens in 2004. This week on our podcast series I interview Hardy Fink, the former Director of Education at the Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG). He has created a world wide educational program used by many different federations and knows a few things about education. We discuss hand spotting athletes, pros and cons of new aged freestyle variations on sports and Hardy walks us through how the FIG's education system was developed over the years. We also talk about the new Freestyle Trampoline community and discuss his thoughts on the future of gymnastics and trampoline. Hardy is the 2019 International Order of Merit recipient for Gymnastics and has a wide variety of roles in the sport of gymnastics; as an athlete, coach, administrator, judge, and educator. Hardy Fink has demonstrated a life-long commitment to the quality, development and growth of gymnastics around the world. Born in Germany, Hardy came to Canada when he was 8 years old with his parents and began gymnastics on his 16th birthday at the Hamilton Germania Gymnastics Club. At the young age of 21, Hardy became the youngest judge ever to earn an international judging brevet for men's gymnastics. Over the last five decades, Hardy has judged at 35 Major International competitions, including eight Olympic Games, and 20 World Championships. After judging controversies at the 2004 Athens Olympics, the reliability of the existing judging system was brought into question. Hardy, who had long advocated for a more objective and effective tool for judging the sport, helped institute an open-ended code of points.
