A busy and interesting term for our staff, students and parents; however, I have been impressed by our community’s ‘blitz spirit’ showing stoicism and determination during a difficult time. We kicked off the term back in January with our Progress Review and Target Setting meetings. Our students have made excellent progress in and out of the classroom in the last term. I also appreciate parent feedback on the event via our survey which we have already analysed and discussed improvements for next year as a Senior Leadership Team. I would like to congratulate our Year 11 and 13 students on a successful round of mock exams to prepare them for this year’s summer exam period. We are very impressed by how the students approached them, which bodes extremely well for the summer exams. The DCA organised a Secondary disco which I know our students enjoyed immensely, and it was great to see so many staff and parents volunteering to support these events which couldn’t run without their help. The Year 13 students presented their Extended Essay’s in our annual ‘CoffEE’ morning, which were all very impressive. They have worked extremely hard, and there were some interesting topics presented and discussed. Thank you to all the parents that attended and showed their support. On the week beginning 21st January, the DCIS Secondary Art Department organised and ran an Arts Week to celebrate and explore creativity and artmaking in its various forms. The week involved lots of exciting opportunities such as Textile workshops, art industry discussions and printing workshops held by our very talented Artist Teachers. Year 9 GCSE Art students also received an extraordinary opportunity to work with Gill Saul, a visiting artist who worked with them on their current 3D sculpture project. Throughout the week, students were also invited to contribute to the ‘Big Draw’ outside of the DT room, which was also a huge success! We also saw our first ever staff performance on ‘The Spot’ this term. Students had voted for the members of staff they wanted to sing a selection of student chosen songs in a karaoke-style show in the Red Dot Restaurant with all proceeds going to charity. Myself, Mr Jury, Mr Mainstone, Mr Lindsay and Mrs Hyland topped the voting and took to the stage today at lunchtime. Despite our performance, we raised nearly $500 for the Tanzania project. A big thank you to the staff and Student Leadership team for their support. I think we can safely say that none of us will be leaving the teaching profession to take up careers in music! As you will understand, there were more things planned for this term that I had hoped to speak of; however, we have all had to adapt and be flexible, given the current situation. I would personally like to thank our excellent staff and students for their support during these new and challenging times. We hope to be able to re-arrange as many of the events and activities that have had to be postponed this term and will do our best to ensure our students do not miss out. I wish you all a restful and healthy half term.

Dear DCIS Parents, This week is another action-packed, albeit short week at Dover Court. We look forward to the Year 4 inter-house swim gala, that will take place tomorrow. Ubin took home the first place in the Year 3 gala and I know that Year 4 have been practicing both their strokes and their house cheering for theirs. All Year 4 parents are welcome to join in the cheering, as always, please remember to wear your parent ID badge when on campus. This week is Arts Week in our Secondary school, with many exciting workshops during lunch time. Today the students were experimenting with textiles. For more information on what's on, see Ms Kertrestel, Mrs Johnston or Ms Ryder! The Year 13 IBDP students are very excited about Thursday's CoffEE, where they will be presenting their Extended Essays, all Year 13 parents are invited to attend. The Primary school will be celebrating the Lunar New Year on Thursday with a Temple Fair. The children are invited to participate fully in the celebration of Chinese New Year by either wearing traditional Chinese clothing or festive red clothing. Children not wearing red or Chinese dress should attend school in school uniform, as this is not a non-uniform day. As you might have heard, I have promised to learn to play the guitar if we reach more than 50% responses on the Parent Satisfaction Survey. Mr Fernandez will be my teacher and I hope that my experience as Major Resilience will help me! The survey is extremely important to us and I do hope that you take your time to complete it. Have a great week and I hope that you enjoy the long weekend ahead. Please note that the school is closed on Friday 24th January and Monday 27th January. Gong Xi Fa Cai!

If you plan to camp in Bayfield County this summer, now is the time to start your research. On this episode of Bayfield County Wild, Director of Bayfield County Tourism, Mary Motiff, gives listeners all the tools to start researching Bayfield County’s 30-plus campgrounds. Co-host Nancy Christopher talks with Dede Eckels about her family’s legacy in the Bayfield Peninsula Arts movement and Mary ends the episode with a round-up of great events in February and a preview of what to expect in March.    Camping This Summer? Start planning now. Mary says the tourism department has three great tools to help visitors research their favorite campgrounds. First, the TravelBayfieldCounty.com website has a graphic link to an interactive map on the home page that can help you locate campgrounds and visualize where they are in relation to the communities throughout Bayfield County. If you know what campground you are looking for, the website also has a business directory that is searchable by name, by area, or by topic. The listings have descriptions and contact information for each campground including links to their websites. Plus, Mary’s office has just updated its camping brochure which lists all of the campgrounds in the area by type (County, Municipal, Private, National Park Service, US Forest Service). You can choose from very rustic, wilderness-type camps that you’ll find on the Apostle Islands or full-service campgrounds with all the amenities like at Legendary Waters Resort & Casino. If you are interested in reserving campsites with the national park system, reservations can be made now at recreation.gov or wait until April to reserve sites at County campgrounds. Call 715-373-6125 to have a brochure mailed to you today.   Eckel’s Pottery and Fine Craft Gallery Dede Eckels and Pete Skora are the owners of Eckels Pottery and Fine Craft Gallery. The family business was started by Dede’s dad, Bob Eckels, and Glenn Nelson in 1960. Then called Eckels Pottery, the studio was affectionately nicknamed “the Pot Shop.” The building was moved to Bayfield in 1962, where it remains today. Bob Eckels was hired by Northland College to start an arts department. A potter, sculptor and jeweler, Eckels was a key player in the growth of the arts movement on the Bayfield Peninsula. He was deeply involved with the Bayfield Chamber, started the Tri-State Art Fair (now the Bayfield Festival of Arts) and helped start the Bayfield Artist Guild. He also established an arts apprenticeship program which drew students from all over the country. He ran the shop until his death in 2004. Dede followed in her father’s steps, becoming a talented potter and owner of the gallery. For more than 40 years, she has made functional, one-of-a-kind pieces and is most known for her signature wildlife and Northwoods imagery. Dede is always experimenting with new glazes and techniques while working with porcelain clay and she describes the process for us in enough detail to give us a true sense of how much work goes into each piece. Dede loves to create very involved surfaces that actually become small paintings on functional pottery. After an initial firing in the kiln and further artistry, the piece undergoes a second firing before it is finally finished. When Dede married her husband, Pete, the gallery underwent a major change - the couple started to invite other artists to showcase their work in the gallery. No longer just pottery, the gallery now includes jewelry, garden sculptures, wood carvings and hand-blown glass, so the name was changed to Eckels Pottery and Fine Craft Gallery. Every summer, Dede and Pete open their studio during Arts Week in Bayfield (the week prior to the Festival of Arts in July) to teach the public the Raku technique of how to decorate, glaze and fire pottery that they can actually take with them when they leave that day. Raku was a process originated by Korean potters. It was later adopted by the Japanese to make Raku cups for their tea ceremonies. In the 1950s and 60s, Raku was “Americanized.” Dede loves the Raku process because its results are immediate, turning clay into a beautiful piece of pottery in just two hours. Eckels Pottery and Fine Craft Gallery is located on the south end of the Bayfield city limits. You can’t miss it because there is a giant stoneware jug, weighing two tons, out front. For more information about the gallery, you can visit the new website at Eckelspottery.com.   February Activities Although not considered an event, a new “Discover Wisconsin” show featuring Bayfield County’s silent sports trails debuts the weekend of Feb. 2. This is the first session of J. Beverley’s Masterclass organised by the Centre for Iberian and Latin American Visual Studies (CILAVS) during Birkbeck’s Arts Week, May 2017. John Beverley is Distinguished Professor of Hispanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh. That the conjunction of postcolonial struggle and structuralism in the 1960s produces a kind of earthquake in academic knowledge and institutions, particularly in the domain of what the French call the human sciences. The shock effect of that earthquake may be named for sake of convenience "theory," and the disciplinary outcome of theory “studies" (cultural, postcolonial, queer, women's, Africana, Atlantic, global, global Pacific, etc.). The core issue is the relation of culture and politics, or to use Raymond Williams' term "cultural materialism". As the revolutionary vanguardist political formations of the 1960s, epitomized by the armed struggle in Latin America, collapse or are defeated, theory and studies nourish and in turn are nourished by new forms of politics, based on the principle of multicultural hegemonic articulation. One compelling form of this possibility are the new governments of the so-called Pink Tide in that emerged in Latin America in the first decade of the new century, which incorporated into their strategy elements of both poststructuralist and postcolonial thinking. However, the tremors of the earthquake of "theory" have subsided. The politics of theory are resisted from both the right--in the form of a kind of "left neo-conservatism"-- and the left--in the form of deconstructive or libertarian ultraleftism. New theories of cultural agency emerge, often with a Deleuzian inspiration or provenance. (e.g. Hardt and Negri on the "multitude," "affect" theory. "posthegemony") and new, less overtly political forms of "studies" (media, visual culture, digital humanities, neo-philology etc., etc.). This first session will focus on the conjuncture that produces of the "earthquake"--the coincidence of postcolonial military and political struggle and the advent of Structuralist theory of the sign. We will spend a moment recalling in particular the radical character of Saussure's theory of the linguistic sign and its consequences for thought and political practice. The shock effect of that earthquake may be named for sake of convenience "theory," and the disciplinary outcome of theory “studies" (cultural, postcolonial, queer, women's, Africana, Atlantic, global, global Pacific, etc.). "posthegemony") and new, less overtly political forms of "studies" (media, visual culture, digital humanities, neo-philology etc., etc.). This third session will examine finally, the waning of the politics of theory in the new century: and the major forms of its critique of (deconstruction, neo-conservatism, Deleuzian and anarchist ultraleftism ), from both the right of the left ("left conservativism") and the left of the left, if that distinction holds meaning. That will bring us to the edge of the present, where the "theory,” along with Marxism and psychoanalysis, has lost practically all purchase. At a moment when the neoliberal consensus that emerged in the 1990s is in a state of crisis (or, some would say, reorganization), what are the new possibilities for a politics of theory? We'll look at some contemporary arguments for egalitarianism and utopianism. For more information - bbk.ac.uk/cilavs/audio-visual-resources/

"posthegemony") and new, less overtly political forms of "studies" (media, visual culture, digital humanities, neo-philology etc., etc.). In this second session, we will look at two of the major products of the politics of theory in the academy. In the 1980s and 1990s, Cultural Studies and Subaltern Studies (a subset of postcolonial studies). We will see that both involve a critique of academic knowledge from the position of "excluded," and the basis for a new kind of politics of the left, based in the social movements. However, both in turn are re-institutionalized in the academy, in a kind of paradoxically syntonic coincidence with neoliberal globalization (especially the case in cultural studies).
