It could have happened anytime, anywhere. But our guest's story takes place in Santa Barbara, California from 1980 to 1983. Four short years that saw a giant leap forward in the development of West Coast surfing, design, performance and image. It was set off by a rare combination of individuals, innovation and illumination, against a backdrop of some of the best seasons of surf in two decades.  Some have called this California's Halcyon Days. But many of us may not have known about this giant leap in surfing had it not been for a modest 19 year old Texan with a slight drawl who just moved to Santa Barbara in late 1979 to attend the highly regarded Brooks Institute for photography. The Texan would go on to document a period in surfing that would go on to reverberate in the surfing world for decades.  Our Guest Jimmy Metyko, from Houston, Texas, has maintained a multi-faceted, successful career path in fields of photography, art, graphic design, fashion design, brand creation, development and marketing by the application of one simple strategy: staying ahead of the curve. And in some cases, even designing the curve. We could go on and on about his accomplishments and career both in and out of surfing but, we're here to talk about a small slice of his life. His recently released book, Shaping Surf History, by Rizzoli Publishing, is out now and it documents a very special time and place in surfing. It is the Stuff of legend and lore. He documents the rise of a quiet and unassuming surfing savant, his mentor and shaper, a sudden arrival of a world Champion and a crew of surfers that would go on to shape the future of surfing. I am of course talking about Tom Curren, Al Merrick, Shaun Tomson and the Santa Barbara surf scene. Jimmy Metyko is our guest on this episode.  Learn more about your ad choices. They are based on the duality of what he experiences in life and how to move from the negative to the positive. 03:18: There is a synthesis between religion and kind of a secular perspective in terms of it's a foundation on which we build our lives and foundation on which we build our world. 04:51: As per Shaun it is faith that keeps us in the direction of where we want to go.  06:09: Life that bends inside us, gives us hope, meaning, reason and optimism. 08:55: Shaun shares the heartbreaking story of losing his son and how he coped with the grief. 10:40: Look for help from friends, rekindle those relationships, look from help for professional people and religious people and look for science and helping nature just work in nature. 11:32: Christopher had many conversations with psychologist authors and it's a common denominator that they say that those people with whom they are counseling and working with those who can accept the reality of where they are right now are able to move forward and those who cannot accept it, they continue to stay in place. 13:05: You put more pressure on yourself and eventually you get caught in this despair and anxiety and you just stop spinning downwards and it's not dissimilar when you can't accept reality and you get caught in this cycle of conjecture, you get open cycle. 16:16: Help others find the beauty in the world, find the signs that God exists and loves, and then things will continue. 3 Key Points Shaun explains how we come from different religions, but underneath we are the same in terms of how we relate to that one God or to that energy that we believe controls the world and is responsible for the world staying on its exes. We had the opportunity to hop on the phone with Josh Greene, the director for his film that will be screening at the festival-- Waves Apart. Waves Apart | March 26, 2023 | 10:00 AM | Maryland Hall (Main) After moving from his Jewish community in Chicago to the small surf town of San Clemente in middle school, Josh Greene became one of the only Jewish kids in his entire town. Josh was bullied and ridiculed for his Jewish heritage, so he decided to find solace in the coolest possible thing he could do as a twelve-year-old San Clemente boy: he took up surfing. Fast forward ten years, and Josh is now an avid surfer. However, Josh was never quite able to leave his Jewish roots behind as new hate groups continue to rise in the United States, with antisemitic rallies happening in his own Southern California backyard. After finding swastikas carved into surfboards at a surf museum, Josh looks back at the sport that once allowed him to fit in. He uncovers California's long, strange history with anti-semitism and how the world's oldest form of hatred has found a home in surfing. By speaking with historians, journalists, and pro surfing legends, like Shaun Tomson and Izzy Paskowitz, Josh personally confronts the hidden underbelly of surfing before discovering new signs of light and community that can help combat the darkness of the sport. THE Leadership Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

Shaun Tomson was a famous South African world champion surfer and the recent guest on Tim Reid's podcast Small Business Big Marketing, of which I am a fan.  In the show, Shaun was talking about what he called his Code concept, based around 12 “I will” statements.  In fifteen minutes, we have to come up with twelve statements, each starting with the words “I will…”.  The idea is that we have to use our stream of consciousness to get down ideas about what we need to be doing.  In Shaun's case he is getting people to think about things they need to do to improve their lives, but it can also be used for more specific business purposes.  I tried it for myself and thought this was a useful idea for strengthening the commitment of the team, to hit our goals and targets. I changed the naming from Code to Commitment, because I wanted a purely business oriented focus in this methodology.  Tim asked Shaun why the number twelve and there was not a particular reason for him to choose twelve, but I kept the same format.  I think twelve makes sense, because it isn't a long laundry list of things that need to be done, which are so numerous, people just give up.  It also can't be too few either, because we have many things to get done and we need some meat on the bone to make it worthwhile doing it at all.  By the way, I found the first few were relatively easy to get down, but twelve pushed me a little to go a bit deeper in my thinking. So you may have a revenue target to reach or some similar business goals and so try it and get your people to spend the 15 minutes to do the exercise.  When I think about it, I usually leave the execution component to the team, after we have announced their targets.  This 12 Commitments approach goes a bit more granular and starts addressing which concrete actions they are going to take to get there.  As I mentioned, the first commitments flow easily without too much thought, but the last half create a bit of tension to come up with things beyond the obvious.  The 15 minute time limit cuts down on the procrastination and perfectionism, which can so often becalm initiatives, as we over think them or make them so complex they never get done. The 15 minutes is enough time without being too much time. I did this exercise with the sales consultants and once everyone has their Commitments, it is important to publicly announce them in front of each other.  Get your people to stand up one at a time and read them out. There is a level of a super buddy system here, as we all become witnesses to each other's commitments.  As the boss, it is also revealing to see what quality level of commitment people can come up with.  Do they have a clear focus on what they need to achieve? How well have they absorbed the culture of the organization? How clearly do they understand the hinge points in their work, which will make a difference to getting the outcomes we need?  In some cases, listening to these reports, we may flag we need to do some additional coaching with some people. In this regard, I also ask everyone to send me their commitments.  Listening to a bunch of people going through their commitments, one after another, becomes hard to remember all of the detail. I will make the time and go through these with them one by one, to see where I can coach them further and also increase their resolve to actually do what they have said they would do.  I also plan to publish each person's commitments internally, so that the whole team can be a witness to what has been committed. I may even get them into some printed format and hand them back to the team to keep in front of them as they do their work.  Having physical reminders of intellectual aspirations is always a good combination. I don't think in a business context, we can just go through this exercise and leave it there.  These twelve items make a good base for the weekly catchup meetings between the boss and the staff to see how they are progressing.  By keeping the interest alive, they feel some pressure to actually implement what they have said was important in their work.  This could just as easily be a temporary boss fad, a passing interest with no great importance.  We don't want that. The Commitments can also be useful milestones for the formal reviews of staff performance.  They had their targets previously and now they have their action items to report on as well. Anything I can do to get my team more focused and committed to achieving the outcomes we have set for the business is very attractive to me.  Shaun's comments in the interview mentioned that there are tens of thousands of people around the world who have gone through this exercise, achieving good results. That sounds pretty good to me and so let's see how far and fast we can drive this approach.

In today's episode of the “Helping Families Be Happy” podcast, host Christopher Robbins talks to Shaun Tomson, a former World Surfing Champion, who has been described as one of the greatest and most influential surfers of all time. Shaun is also a world-renowned leader, mentor, entrepreneur, environmentalist, and best-selling author. Today they're going to explore principles of decimal living from his most recent book, The Surfer and The Sage.   Episode Highlights 02:20 – Christopher asks Shaun to tell a little bit about his background, how he got into surfing and the World Championships. 04:15 – Shaun talks about his father who was South Africa's top swimmer and used to go to the Olympics. He became a world champion in many events around the world. 07:42 - There's a way to activate positive decision-making in this magic universe through the stroke of Science and Leadership, says Shaun. 10:02 - This book – ‘The Surfer and The Sage' is a continuation of philosophy that addresses the eighteen relentless, breaking waves of life, from loss and aging to relationships and depression, and guides you to transformation. 12:30 – Christopher wonders and enquires that as a Surfer and as an Environmentalist what has the ocean taught Shaun. 15:50 - Shaun mentions that his parents have had so much impact on him that it has been a source of service, a source of inspiration, and it's been the way he became the world champion. 17:00 - What have you learned in writing the book that can help the family deal with the anxiety that perhaps some are experiencing today? Asks Christopher. 19:20 - This book is a common book that will take you through some of the stories and philosophical interpretations of the story. 21:20 – Christopher was so fascinated as he was reading about forgiveness, humility, and courage in the book. Every chapter amongst the 18 chapters is focused on life are opposites. 25:30 - Was there a moment in writing this book where you learned something you had an aha moment something you hadn't realized before? Enquires Christopher. 27:50 – Christopher states that he loves that quote by Gupta from the book – “Whatever you can believe you can begin. Boldness has genius, power, and magic so that it connects with anyone." Three Key Points While everyone runs something different, we have defined this compulsion that we want to be better today than yesterday, and we want to be better tomorrow than we are today. The underline is, that we'll help others to be better which means to help others to be part of a wider community. ‘The Surfer and The Sage' is not a list of rules to follow that guarantee success, health, or wealth, but rather a collection of advice from two guides who have traveled far and wide and suffered deeply, but still look forward to tomorrow with faith and hope.  This is not just a book that talks about this concept of hope and this concept of optimism. This is a book that talks about faith, and darkness. It talks about forgiveness, but at the same time, it also talks about guilt. It talks about optimism, but it talks about pessimism as well. So we have to see these aspects in order to make a positive step forward. Tweetable Quotes “My primary mission is to help the world be a better place by making lives better.” - Shaun Tomson “After I retired from the church, I ended up working for Sony which worked for Patagonia for a couple of years, that was a wonderful brand.” - Shaun Tomson “The ocean has taught me so much about the basic principles of life.” - Shaun Tomson “At the beginning of the book, you say this world is too often, too broken for too many.” - Christopher Robbins “So the principal words have been stress, anxiety, depression, and disconnection.” - Shaun Tomson “You have to face the bitter too in order to know the sweet” - Christopher Robbins “That's the whole point that Familias assisted families, be happy individuals, families, whatever type of family you have.” - Christopher Robbins “I started with a statement that words have the power to change our mindset, and our lives.” - Shaun Tomson Resources Mentioned Helping Families be Happy Podcast  Apple Dr. Carla Marie Manly  Website  LinkedIn  Twitter   Instagram Shaun Tomson Website Instagram Twitter LinkedIn Podcast Editing

In today's episode of the “Helping Families Be Happy” podcast, host Christopher Robins, Co-founder of Familius publishing, husband, father of nine, author, fisherman, backpacker, and aspirational musician based in the Central Valley of California talks with guest Noah BenShea, North America's most respected and beloved Poet/Philosophers, Pulitzer Prize-nominated, and international Best-Selling author of 28 books translated into 18 languages. They explore the principles of successful living from Noah's most recent book – The Surfer and the Sage: A Guide to Survive and Ride Life's Waves co-authored with world champion surfer - Shaun Tomson.   Episode Highlights 01:37 – Christopher says, it's interesting to think that a real champion Surfer Co-authored a book with a world-famous Poet. 03:50 – Poetry in many regards is the business of putting a frame around a moment around a witness that you give to a moment that might otherwise pass unnoticed, unknown, says Noah  05:38 – Noah shares, what he learned about life through his experience with Shaun, and the parallels that exist with the ocean and with waves in the surfing. 08:10 – Shaun spends more time in the water than he spends typing, and Noah spends more time typing than being on a surfboard, says Noah. 12:02 – Christopher reads a section of the book – “When there are storms overhead, drop down into your mind ocean and ride the waves under your waves, the calm in your storm is the calm within you, your calm is calmly waiting, your calm is not at a distance from you unless you are at a distance from you.” 14:45 – Noah says, finding that calm inside of you is first recognizing that if you're in a state of turmoil. The turmoil is yours, and the disquiet is yours. 16:20 - Your working life is who you are and how you conduct yourself with you, says Noah. 18:42 – Noah mentions, that life is a gift, and prayer is a thank-you note. Write thank-you notes, and send those thank-you notes out.  20:02 – Noah states, that the only company that we can be assured of on that journey is ourselves. 22:35 – Before Noah gets to his prayers during his meditation is that he imagines that he is a prequel to himself. 24:55 – Noah's feeling is that each of us is a time machine, and in our memory, we can go backward in time. In our imagination, we can go forward in time, but the only place you can steer your time machine is in the now. 26:55 - In working with Shaun there were times in a story that he would tell about loss, but he wanted to be wise enough to be silent, states Noah   Three Key Points One of the real strengths of this book is that at the very cost of anything else both Shaun and Noah wanted to bring honesty and candor. Just two straight-ahead guys who are a little further down the trail than a lot of other people in life perhaps, and bring that to it. So, to Shaun the ocean of the idea of a wave rising or waves falling, catching a wave or missing your wave, or the idea that you're not a drop in the sea, you are all the drops in the sea in a philosophic sense was very easy and a comfortable fit for him. While they both spoke about doing this book, Shaun was the one who decided that he (Guest) would be the sage in this book. You're not in charge, what you are in charge of is you. What the world delivers to your doorstep each morning isn't your responsibility, your responsibility is your reaction to it, and it's calming to the soul. When you realize that your sole responsibility is who you are and how you conduct yourself. That's the only thing you're in charge of for the moment and in the moment. Your working life is not what you do, but who you are and that's in the book. So, our work in life is oftentimes making us self-important.  In the same way, as we leave the woods behind, we leave the boat behind, and we leave the river behind. We wander through where we are in that moment, and the only company that you can be assured of on that journey is yourself. So, it would be wise to be good company to that company on that journey. Our ability to be good company with others is premised on our ability to be good company with ourselves.    Tweetable Quotes “A poet's work is not always writing poetry but discovering poetry and putting the appropriate silence on both sides of it.” - Noah BenShea “Feelings are like tides, they come and go, and not to get too attached to your feelings or don't confuse how you feel with who you are.” - Noah BenShea “All courage happens on a private scale on a private stage.” - Noah BenShea “You can't like others if you don't like yourself, you can't love others if you don't love yourself.” - Noah BenShea “People don't do things to you; they do things for them.” - Noah BenShea “Self-pity is the worst way to discover self.” - Noah BenShea “The two great days in a person's life are - the day they are born and the day they know why they're born.” - Noah BenShea   Resources Mentioned The Surfer and the Sage Book Noah BSenShea: Website Podcast Editing

Full episodes info and Show Notes - www.wearelookingsideways.com Let's get straight to it - I've got one of surfing's all-time great legends on the show this week. Along with peers like Ian Cairns, Rabbit and MR, 1977 World Champion Shaun Thomson helped to redefine surfing over the course of one of THE most influential careers of them all. He changed the game in ways we all continue to benefit from today. Then there are his off-the-water contributions, which are as progressive and game-changing as his surfing. He was one of surfing's earliest activists, working with organisations such as Surfrider, and organising a campaign to improve water quality at Rincon, among other firsts. He's also an entrepreneur, starting Instinct and sponsoring other legends such as Tom Carroll and Barton Lynch on the way to their own world crowns. And, as if that isn't enough, he's also a creative filmmaker and cultural custodian, notably through the film Bustin' Down The Door, which documented the mid-70s Hawaiian scene Shaun was himself such a key part of. And yet, despite these incredible heights, Shaun's life has also been marked by rare tragedy. The death of his beloved son Mathew in 1995 left him understandably bereft and seeking a new purpose in life. He found it with his Surfer's Code, a deceptively simple self-development tool which uses surfing as a metaphor for life's struggles, and which Shaun has subsequently used to help thousands of individuals and business find their own purpose. Taken as a whole, Shaun's story is remarkable on many levels, and in this conversation we spoke about this career in the context of the biggest themes of all - life, death, grief, recovery; and how surfing has the power to shape your life in ways it can take a lifetime to understand. I'm very grateful to Shaun for taking the time to share his story with such openness and generosity. Hope you enjoy this episode. Thanks to Matt Ward for the theme tune, to my editor Fina Charleson, and to Duncan Yeldham for production support.

Paddle in.  Meet Shaun Tomson World Champion Surfer and Entrepreneur talking about leading with purpose. Please a deep dive into the code he lived by to be a champion and a business code for entrepreneurial success. There are some people in this world who are pure, true guiding lights. They are hard to find, because they don't often seek the spotlight. They quietly live in the service of others, and they speak with such respect for life that their voice rings with rich, authentic compassion.   Shaun Tomson is just such a human. He is one of the best-known surfers of all time. He held the World Surfing Championship in 1977, and distinguished himself as a leader of the “Free Ride” generation of surfers daring enough to surf on Hawaii's North Shore.   He paved the way for future surfers and legitimized the sport internationally, but he went even further when he wrote his best-selling book, Surfer's Code – 12 Simple lessons for riding through life.   He worked for Patagonia, started his own company called Instinct, and even found time to act in several films. Today he is a board member and ambassador for the Surfrider Foundation, the world's largest environmental group dedicated to protecting the world's oceans, waves, and beaches.   In this podcast he tells us the origin story of this timeless book, and of all the experiences he had following his surf career using his fame for good. Although he has experienced shocking personal loss in his life, he has always made it a point to keep paddling out, and encourages others to ride along with him.   He is one of the most inspiring individuals I've ever spoken with. He is living proof of just how much you can do in one lifetime if you have a Code.   Connect with Shaun: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shaun-tomson-42a57213/   Paddle into Groundswell: Groundswell Mighty Network: https://groundswell.mn.co/ Groundswell Origins: http://www.GroundswellOrigins.com Podcast Blog: http://www.Groundswell.fm Scott Martin: http://www.Instagram.com/ScottMartin_org Please connect with me here: Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottadam.
