In this inspiring episode, former world surfing champion Shaun Tomson shares his powerful methodology for finding purpose and transforming mindset during challenging times. Tomson discusses the creation of his book,"The Surfer and the Sage," co-written with philosopher Noah benShea during COVID-19, which addresses the widespread feelings of stress, anxiety, depression, and disconnection. He introduces "The Code" - a transformative 12-line exercise where each line begins with "I will" - that has helped millions worldwide shift from negative to positive mindsets. Through compelling storytelling, including the beautiful "Sacred Story Stone" legend, Tomson demonstrates how personal transformation comes not from inspirational words of others, but from writing and sharing our own words of commitment and purpose. Episode Highlights 00:00:10: Christopher Robbins introduces the Helping Families Be Happy podcast and welcomes Shaun Tomson, former world surfing champion, leadership mentor, entrepreneur, and author of "The Surfer and the Sage." 00:01:09: Tomson explains his work as an ambassador for Boys to Men mentoring and the annual 100 Wave Challenge fundraiser that guides boys through their journey to manhood. 00:01:54: Tomson shares the origin story of "The Surfer and the Sage," describing how he met co-author Noah benShea during COVID and conceived the book concept in just five minutes. 00:02:43: Tomson describes his interactive presentations where he asks audiences to text words describing how they're feeling, creating word clouds that revealed widespread stress, anxiety, depression, and disconnection even among fully employed workers at successful companies. 00:03:39: Discussion of how the book addresses the "sad mind state" and creates 18 chapters (a sacred number in Judaism) designed as journeys from darkness to light, despair to hope, and powerlessness to empowerment. 00:05:25: Tomson expresses gratitude for the book's impact across multiple sectors, from Kellogg Business School to Harvard Kennedy School to large resort groups in Mexico, demonstrating its universal appeal. 00:06:11: Christopher asks Tomson to share what he tells audiences to help them find greater purpose in turbulent times. 00:06:48: Tomson emphasizes the power of storytelling over facts and data, citing Stanford research showing stories are remembered 27 times more than data, and explains that stories serve as both mirrors and windows for people. 00:07:49: Description of Tomson's presentation structure: telling four key stories about the Code's origin, perseverance and resilience, courage and commitment, and deep emotional connectivity. 00:08:49: Tomson explains the Code writing process where everyone writes 12 lines beginning with "I will" in 12 minutes, then shares their codes with the group. 00:09:38: Discussion of how the Code reveals the two halves of life's meaning and purpose: "I'll be better" and "I'll help others be better," with participants texting lines from their codes that display positive values. 00:10:24: Tomson defines purpose as "a committed intention to realize goals that are meaningful for oneself and for the broader world." 00:11:21: Description of the transformation that occurs during presentations, with mindset shifting from 80-90% negative at the beginning to 99-100% positive by the end. 00:12:52: Discussion of how great leaders' words inspire but personal transformation requires writing one's own words, with reference to JFK's famous quote (originally from Cicero). 00:13:46: Tomson explains that the Code method is "open source" and can be used by anyone, particularly families, to bring people together around shared purpose. 00:14:18: Christopher sets up the context that the episode will air at the beginning of 2026 and asks for a story to help engage listeners in the new year. 00:14:39: Tomson introduces his mission to create a "positive wave tribe" with the simple formula: "Drop a stone, create a ripple, build the wave" 00:15:45: Tomson begins telling the Chumash legend of the Rainbow Bridge, explaining how the Chumash people lived in Santa Barbara 13,500 years ago before any Western religion developed. 00:16:48: The legend describes how the earth mother planted a magic seed on Santa Cruz Island, and people crossed a rainbow bridge to the mainland, with those who looked down being transformed into dolphins. 00:17:28: Description of Hammonds Reef and Shaa Meadow, dedicated to the Chumash people, with its memorial bearing the inscription "The sacredness of the land lies in the mind of its people." 00:18:20: Tomson shares a personal story of visiting the beach with his son Matthew, where they were the only two people present. 00:19:04: Matthew creates a sacred story circle out of cobblestones with a stick decorated with feathers and kelp, establishing a rule that whoever holds the stick tells the story while the other listens. 00:20:09: Tomson reflects on this as one of the best times he's ever had on a beach, emphasizing the deep emotional connection created and how rare such moments are in modern life dominated by cell phones. 00:21:02: Matthew reveals he kept a "sacred story stone" from the circle, explaining that all their stories are contained within it, demonstrating the concept of "speaking in spirit language." 00:21:53: Discussion of the Hawaiian concept of "mana" (life force) and how ancient Hawaiians believed it could be contained in inanimate objects. 00:23:17: Christopher thanks Tomson for the beautiful story and asks where listeners can find the Code worksheet online. 00:23:37: Tomson directs listeners to shauntomson.com where they can download the Code worksheet for free and use it with families, sports teams, business groups, or educational settings. 00:24:41: Tomson shares a testimonial from a tech company CEO who credited writing his Code seven years earlier with inspiring him to start his company, which had just reached unicorn status (billion-dollar valuation). 00:25:30: Tomson reflects on the journey that began with empowering students facing an environmental problem at Rincon surfing beach, leading to collaboration with Professor Patrick Moser and the publication of Surfer's Code. 00:26:25: Christopher concludes by thanking Familius for supporting the podcast and encouraging listeners to subscribe, leave reviews, and explore Familius books. Key Takeaways Stories are 27 times more memorable than facts and data, making storytelling essential for creating lasting impact and inspiration. The Code method - writing 12 lines beginning with "I will" - provides a simple yet powerful tool for finding and defining personal purpose that can shift mindset from negative to positive True purpose encompasses both personal growth ("I'll be better") and service to others ("I'll help others be better"), creating meaning that extends beyond ourselves. Personal transformation requires using your own words rather than relying solely on the inspirational words of others - "words of great leaders inspire us, but your own words transform." Deep emotional connectivity through practices like creating "sacred story circles" with family members combats the disconnection epidemic created by technology and modern lif. Purpose is defined as "a committed intention to realize goals that are meaningful for oneself and for the broader world." The simple formula "Drop stone, create a ripple, build the wave" encapsulates how individual actions of purpose can create collective positive change. Writing and sharing personal codes with family members creates powerful bonding experiences and helps establish shared values and commitments. Quotable Moments "Facts and data don't move people. And I have found that, that if you tell a story, it brings people close to you. And a story is both a mirror and a story is a window.""Stories are remembered 27 times more than data. So you want to get someone to remember something, tell 'em a story." "If you want to inspire people, tell them a story. But if you want people to create personal transformation, they have to use their own words." "The sacredness of the land lies in the mind of its people." "Dad, this is a sacred story circle and we're gonna sit inside the sacred story circle on the rocks and we're gonna tell each other stories. He said, there's just rule. Whoever's got a stick the story and what does the other person do? The other person just listens." "We think the cell phone is a tool of connection when often the cell phone's a tool of disconnection and we just need to turn it off." "When you spoke to your son, the Hawaiians call it speaking in spirit language." "Every line of the code is a story. Every line of the code that people write is a sacred story. Every line begins with I will. That's a promise." "Words of great leaders inspire us. You want words of transformation? Write your code, your own words, because your own words transform others inspire your own words." "Purpose. A committed intention. That's what purpose is. A committed intention to realize goals that are meaningful for oneself and for the broader world."

Born in 1955, hailing from Durban, South Africa, Shaun Tomson won the IPS world title in 1977. He did 14 seasons on the world tour, and won 12 events, including the 1975 Pipeline Masters, in which he made giant leaps for backside tube riding. He starred in many '70s and '80s surf films, among them Free Ride, where he's seen pumping through the barrel at Backdoor and Off the Wall—an entirely new thing at the time. But Tomson's surfing was only part of the equation. He was business minded, and in the late '70s launched a clothing label, Instinct, and in 1985 a surf shop, Surfbeat, in Santa Monica. He holds a BA in Business Finance. In 1991, Australia's Surfing Life mag named him as the world's all-time best tube rider. Tomson co-produced Bustin' Down the Door, a 2008 documentary film chronicling the rise of pro surfing in the early '70s. He's the author of the best-selling Surfer's Code: 12 Simple Lessons for Riding Through Life. In this episode of Soundings, Tomson sits down with host Jamie Brisick to talk about transformative experiences in the tube, growing up in South Africa, the influence of his father, the highs and lows of his professional career, writing his book, and the passing of his son. Produced by Jonathan Shifflett. Music by PazKa (Aska Matsumiya & Paz Lenchantin).

It could have happened anytime, anywhere. But our guest's story takes place in Santa Barbara, California from 1980 to 1983. Four short years that saw a giant leap forward in the development of West Coast surfing, design, performance and image. It was set off by a rare combination of individuals, innovation and illumination, against a backdrop of some of the best seasons of surf in two decades. Some have called this California's Halcyon Days. But many of us may not have known about this giant leap in surfing had it not been for a modest 19 year old Texan with a slight drawl who just moved to Santa Barbara in late 1979 to attend the highly regarded Brooks Institute for photography. The Texan would go on to document a period in surfing that would go on to reverberate in the surfing world for decades. Our Guest Jimmy Metyko, from Houston, Texas, has maintained a multi-faceted, successful career path in fields of photography, art, graphic design, fashion design, brand creation, development and marketing by the application of one simple strategy: staying ahead of the curve. And in some cases, even designing the curve. We could go on and on about his accomplishments and career both in and out of surfing but, we're here to talk about a small slice of his life. His recently released book, Shaping Surf History, by Rizzoli Publishing, is out now and it documents a very special time and place in surfing. It is the Stuff of legend and lore. He documents the rise of a quiet and unassuming surfing savant, his mentor and shaper, a sudden arrival of a world Champion and a crew of surfers that would go on to shape the future of surfing. I am of course talking about Tom Curren, Al Merrick, Shaun Tomson and the Santa Barbara surf scene. Jimmy Metyko is our guest on this episode. Learn more about your ad choices. Shaun Tomson won a world title in 1977 and began developing his skills as a speaker on topics of personal adversity, growth, and writing your code, your best intentions, for day to day living. Needless to say, he eloquently shares thoughts on relaunching his brand from the 80's, Instinct, and how he used a $100 budget from Surfrider Foundation founder, Glenn Hening, to inspire surfers to prioritize our oceans' collective health. This and three fantastic surf stories will be sure to entertain. We and Daytona State College will be hosting Shaun on September 4th in person at the News Journal Center in Daytona Beach, along with a screening of Bustin' Down the Door with special guest, Peter Townsend. It is aligned with what can happen when you are an athlete." – Christopher "Whatever your sport may be, do that and then help others, whatever that might be mentoring, teaching and doing with our projects, getting involved with the NGO that might do something, and do you create inspirational project that is in memory of the of the person you lost." - Shaun Resources Mentioned Helping Families be Happy Podcast Apple Podcast Editing

The Annapolis Film Festival opens on Thursday, March 23rd and will run through March 26th, featuring more than 70 films, panels, coffee chats, and parties throughout Annapolis. We had the opportunity to hop on the phone with Josh Greene, the director for his film that will be screening at the festival-- Waves Apart. Waves Apart | March 26, 2023 | 10:00 AM | Maryland Hall (Main) After moving from his Jewish community in Chicago to the small surf town of San Clemente in middle school, Josh Greene became one of the only Jewish kids in his entire town. Josh was bullied and ridiculed for his Jewish heritage, so he decided to find solace in the coolest possible thing he could do as a twelve-year-old San Clemente boy: he took up surfing. Fast forward ten years, and Josh is now an avid surfer. However, Josh was never quite able to leave his Jewish roots behind as new hate groups continue to rise in the United States, with antisemitic rallies happening in his own Southern California backyard. After finding swastikas carved into surfboards at a surf museum, Josh looks back at the sport that once allowed him to fit in. He uncovers California's long, strange history with anti-semitism and how the world's oldest form of hatred has found a home in surfing. By speaking with historians, journalists, and pro surfing legends, like Shaun Tomson and Izzy Paskowitz, Josh personally confronts the hidden underbelly of surfing before discovering new signs of light and community that can help combat the darkness of the sport. Have a listen! Tickets and passes are on sale now for the 11th Annual Annapolis Film Festival.

In today's episode of the “Helping Families Be Happy” podcast, host Christopher Robbins talks to Shaun Tomson, a former World Surfing Champion, who has been described as one of the greatest and most influential surfers of all time. Shaun is also a world-renowned leader, mentor, entrepreneur, environmentalist, and best-selling author. Today they're going to explore principles of decimal living from his most recent book, The Surfer and The Sage. Episode Highlights 02:20 – Christopher asks Shaun to tell a little bit about his background, how he got into surfing and the World Championships. 04:15 – Shaun talks about his father who was South Africa's top swimmer and used to go to the Olympics. He became a world champion in many events around the world. 07:42 - There's a way to activate positive decision-making in this magic universe through the stroke of Science and Leadership, says Shaun. 10:02 - This book – ‘The Surfer and The Sage' is a continuation of philosophy that addresses the eighteen relentless, breaking waves of life, from loss and aging to relationships and depression, and guides you to transformation. 12:30 – Christopher wonders and enquires that as a Surfer and as an Environmentalist what has the ocean taught Shaun. 15:50 - Shaun mentions that his parents have had so much impact on him that it has been a source of service, a source of inspiration, and it's been the way he became the world champion. 17:00 - What have you learned in writing the book that can help the family deal with the anxiety that perhaps some are experiencing today? Asks Christopher. 19:20 - This book is a common book that will take you through some of the stories and philosophical interpretations of the story. 21:20 – Christopher was so fascinated as he was reading about forgiveness, humility, and courage in the book. Every chapter amongst the 18 chapters is focused on life are opposites. 25:30 - Was there a moment in writing this book where you learned something you had an aha moment something you hadn't realized before? Enquires Christopher. 27:50 – Christopher states that he loves that quote by Gupta from the book – “Whatever you can believe you can begin. Boldness has genius, power, and magic so that it connects with anyone." Three Key Points While everyone runs something different, we have defined this compulsion that we want to be better today than yesterday, and we want to be better tomorrow than we are today. The underline is, that we'll help others to be better which means to help others to be part of a wider community. ‘The Surfer and The Sage' is not a list of rules to follow that guarantee success, health, or wealth, but rather a collection of advice from two guides who have traveled far and wide and suffered deeply, but still look forward to tomorrow with faith and hope. This is not just a book that talks about this concept of hope and this concept of optimism. This is a book that talks about faith, and darkness. It talks about forgiveness, but at the same time, it also talks about guilt. It talks about optimism, but it talks about pessimism as well. So we have to see these aspects in order to make a positive step forward. Full episodes info and Show Notes - www.wearelookingsideways.com Let's get straight to it - I've got one of surfing's all-time great legends on the show this week. Along with peers like Ian Cairns, Rabbit and MR, 1977 World Champion Shaun Thomson helped to redefine surfing over the course of one of THE most influential careers of them all. He changed the game in ways we all continue to benefit from today. Then there are his off-the-water contributions, which are as progressive and game-changing as his surfing. He was one of surfing's earliest activists, working with organisations such as Surfrider, and organising a campaign to improve water quality at Rincon, among other firsts. He's also an entrepreneur, starting Instinct and sponsoring other legends such as Tom Carroll and Barton Lynch on the way to their own world crowns. And, as if that isn't enough, he's also a creative filmmaker and cultural custodian, notably through the film Bustin' Down The Door, which documented the mid-70s Hawaiian scene Shaun was himself such a key part of. And yet, despite these incredible heights, Shaun's life has also been marked by rare tragedy. The death of his beloved son Mathew in 1995 left him understandably bereft and seeking a new purpose in life. He found it with his Surfer's Code, a deceptively simple self-development tool which uses surfing as a metaphor for life's struggles, and which Shaun has subsequently used to help thousands of individuals and business find their own purpose. Taken as a whole, Shaun's story is remarkable on many levels, and in this conversation we spoke about this career in the context of the biggest themes of all - life, death, grief, recovery; and how surfing has the power to shape your life in ways it can take a lifetime to understand. I'm very grateful to Shaun for taking the time to share his story with such openness and generosity. Hope you enjoy this episode. Thanks to Matt Ward for the theme tune, to my editor Fina Charleson, and to Duncan Yeldham for production support.
Paddle in. Meet Shaun Tomson World Champion Surfer and Entrepreneur talking about leading with purpose. Please a deep dive into the code he lived by to be a champion and a business code for entrepreneurial success. There are some people in this world who are pure, true guiding lights. They are hard to find, because they don't often seek the spotlight. They quietly live in the service of others, and they speak with such respect for life that their voice rings with rich, authentic compassion. Shaun Tomson is just such a human. He is one of the best-known surfers of all time. He held the World Surfing Championship in 1977, and distinguished himself as a leader of the “Free Ride” generation of surfers daring enough to surf on Hawaii's North Shore. He paved the way for future surfers and legitimized the sport internationally, but he went even further when he wrote his best-selling book, Surfer's Code – 12 Simple lessons for riding through life. He worked for Patagonia, started his own company called Instinct, and even found time to act in several films. Today he is a board member and ambassador for the Surfrider Foundation, the world's largest environmental group dedicated to protecting the world's oceans, waves, and beaches. In this podcast he tells us the origin story of this timeless book, and of all the experiences he had following his surf career using his fame for good. Although he has experienced shocking personal loss in his life, he has always made it a point to keep paddling out, and encourages others to ride along with him. He is one of the most inspiring individuals I've ever spoken with. He is living proof of just how much you can do in one lifetime if you have a Code.
