Growing up I was called a diva because I needed things to be a certain way. For example, I remember taking out the batteries of all the clocks in our home because I couldn't stand the endless tick-tock noise. Fast forward into adulthood, when I finally learned that these aren't just charming traits about me, but I'm actually a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) – an individual who is thought to have an increased or deeper central nervous system sensitivity to physical, emotional, or social stimuli. When I became a mother, all of the things that made me an HSP became magnified, sometimes this was a good thing, but more often than not it made daily life feel so overwhelming. This is why I'm so excited to have Alissa Boyer, a Mentor for HSPs, on the show today. She helps HSPs learn how to unapologetically embrace their sensitivity and use it as a strength in their lives – including in motherhood! If any of this is resonating, this is the episode for you. Triggers can feel emotionally overwhelming, especially when you're a highly sensitive person (HSP). In this beautiful conversation, I had the honor to have Alissa Boyer back on the podcast to share more of what it means to live life as an HSP (highly sensitive person), and how to know if you're even sensitive yourself? I didn't know this until I watched the documentary with Alanis Morissette called "Sensitive: The Untold Story", but I knew my whole life that I felt deeply, I loved hard, and I was overwhelmed with a floodgate of emotions I often didn't know how to process, let alone know how to help myself self-regulate. In this episode Alissa shares how her journey has shifted since Ep. 74 - Stop Apologizing for Your Sensitivity + Start Harnessing Your HSP (Highly Sensitive Person) and answers these powerful questions:1. What does it mean to be highly sensitive? 2. What are some common experiences of being highly sensitive?3. Why doesn't the world embrace HSPs for their gifts?4. What tools help you self-regulate to RISE above the stories?I'm super excited to have Alissa join us as a teacher and member of the upcoming round of my Live Vibrant Sisterhood sharing one of her favorite modalities for self regulation, EFT for Empaths! It's the first interview episode after our hiatus! Today, Kaylin is excited to sit down with Alissa Boyer, Mentor for Highly Sensitive People and everything Soulful & Sensitive. We talk about getting in touch with our creative side, what it truly means to be a Highly Sensitive Person, sensation seeking, parenting as an HSP, pacing ourselves as overachievers, being assertive with your own needs, self-regulation, taking action, self-compassion, and where HSPs can naturally thrive. You don't want to miss this episode if you're an HSP or want to learn more about what it means to be highly sensitive. Were you told as a child "stop being so sensitive", or felt the need to apologize for your sensitive + soft Nature? In a world that does not revere + respect sensitivity, this can leave those of us who are to experience micro-traumas (or as we talked about in Ep. 71, covert traumas) and feelings of aloneness, anxiety, and frustration in not feeling understood and accepted as you are. In a beautiful conversation with Alissa Boyer of the Sensitive and Soulful podcast, you will learn how to overcome this shame of being sensitive and learn how to harness your HSP powers which is the joy and divine gift of deeply experiencing life. As Alissa speaks about, being highly sensitive is a missing barrier between you and the rest of the world, but what if that missing barrier allowed you to access portals that create the visionaries and luminaries of life? For those listening that are not highly sensitive, Alissa also shares guidance for being an ally and how to help those in your life that are highly sensitive feel loved, respected, and accepted for their sensitive nature without being ostracized. By the end of the episode, you will truly be feeling the embodiment of Alissa's teachings which is an "I have my own back" kind of energy to surrender the feeling of being a "canary in a coalmine" (which is one of my fave Police songs, fyi!) - listen here! In fact, my highly sensitive soul is even crying now writing this listening to this song, LOL. Today we're so excited to share with you our interview with my friend Alissa Boyer, a mentor for Highly Sensitive People (HSPs.) Christina wasn't able to make the episode today, so my husband, Ben Fritz (who is also an HSP and coaches a lot of HSPs) stepped in to be my cohost! Alissa's experience with chronic gut issues and SIBO brought her to the HSP world and now she's helping others out there just like us! I've always been interested in interviewing Alissa because I've always seen the correlation between some of us who are highly sensitive and have a chronic condition. For those of you out there a that think you might be an HSP (take the test here), this episode is for you! In today's episode we chat about: What is a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) and how do you know if you are one? Sensitivity is not a “weakness” and how it actually tends to impact those of us who are high achievers How chronic stomach issues and SIBO led Alissa to finding out she is an HSP How the phrase “just stop being stressed!” from our doctors is extremely unhelpful and how we can learn to manage that stress Sometimes we subconsciously don't want to heal OR don't think we can (ouch!) How being out of alignment as an HSP affects our health If you are an HSP, finding ways to take care of your self is key in our healing The correlation between being highly sensitive and having chronic illness (for some!) Today I am joined by Alissa Boyer. Alissa is a hardworking Minnesota girl. She moved to California when she was 22-years-old to pursue a career in the fashion industry. Her first job was in a fast-paced, high-stress retail environment. As a highly sensitive, deeply empathetic person, working in this type of environment was jarring for me. She did her best to develop a “thick skin”, but within a few months of my new job, Alissa was diagnosed with severe digestive issues that were induced by the constant anxiety and stress in her life. What felt like a tragedy at the time, ended up being the best thing that could've ever happened to me. Being diagnosed with Leaky Gut and SIBO forced Alissa to look at the way she was treating herself and her body. The only way she could fully heal was by learning to reduce her anxiety and stress. So, she got serious about it. Alissa dove deep into the world of self-help, personal development, and emotional healing. We talk about what is a highly sensitive person, how to communicate with your partner about being highly sensitive, and how being highly sensitive is a strength. To connect with Alissa https://www.instagram.com/lifebyalissa/

I'm your host, Alissa Boyer - a spiritual writer, founder of the Highly Sensitive & Soulful Membership, and mentor to Highly Sensitive People (HSP). My mission in life is to help other highly sensitive souls learn how to embrace their sensitivity as a gift and lean into it instead of fighting against it. In this episode, I talk about my own personal journey to discovering I'm an HSP and how I've turned it into my ultimate super power which has allowed me to now help thousands of others do the same! The world is a better place when more sensitive and deep-feeling people are comfortable and confident in their skin. I'm so happy you're here.
