In this episode of the Play Therapy Parenting Podcast, I kick off a new series on raising kids who self-regulate. Power struggles and control grabs are common challenges in parenting, but they often undermine the parent-child relationship. I discuss why the ultimate goal is not controlling your child's behavior but teaching parents a new way to interact with their kids that fosters self-regulation. I introduce the key concept that children learn self-regulation by being given the opportunity to take responsibility for their actions, rather than having their behavior controlled by adults. Through this series, I'll share practical, tangible strategies to help parents foster emotional vocabulary, self-regulation, and autonomy in their kids. Together, we'll work toward happier homes and stronger relationships. Professor Sophia Jowett's has conducted a lot of research into understanding the interpersonal dynamics between coaches and athletes and is instrumental in raising awareness and changing attitudes around the reciprocity of the relationship and the importance of relational qualities including mutual trust, respect, appreciation, commitment, loyalty, co-operation and collaboration. In today's episode, part 4 of David's investigation into ChatGPT's and its response to the question “What Can I Expect When Working With A Sport Psychologist” he goes on to discuss supporting a coach who receives negative feedback from athletes or players.  The aim is to aid your understanding of applying psychological skills training (PST) techniques such as self- talk, relaxation and visualisation to improve the quality of the coach-athlete relationship, and in turn, positively impact both coaches' and athletes' performance and wellbeing.  There are connections between the points discussed and Jowett's work.  Enjoy tuning in! Key Learning Points: Coaches can benefit from being supported by Sport Psychologists too, not just athletes. As a coach understanding your own emotions and why they occur can benefit your relationships with athletes or players. When you experience negative emotions as a coach does your self-talk become judgemental? Instructional self-talk can benefit coaches to manage situations better. Allowing your self some space to breathe as a coach is useful and can help your behaviour management, as can improving your visualisation skills. She begins by contrasting traditional mindset or energetic work, often focused on aligning oneself with desired outcomes, with the empowering approach offered by the Gene Keys. Rather than relinquishing power by seeking external alignment, the Gene Keys empower individuals to take responsibility for their mental and emotional states throughout the launch process, free from external influence or distraction. The discussion delves into the Venus Sequence within the Gene Keys framework, highlighting how understanding and utilizing your IQ and EQ provide essential tools for managing mental blocks and emotional barriers. By uncovering patterns of behavior, self-sabotage tendencies, and innate methods of connection rooted in love, individuals gain insights into their authentic selves. A Parenting Resource for Children’s Behavior and Mental Health

When our children experience dysregulation, it undeniably adds a layer of difficulty to the parenting journey, regardless of their age. As parents, we find ourselves confronted by challenges in regulation, necessitating a comprehensive understanding and application of strategies tailored to the unique needs of each developmental phase.Let's delve into this episode where we discuss the strategies of nurturing self-regulation in our kids and explore the positive behaviors that manifest when they successfully regulate their emotions and actions. Teaching children self-regulation skills. While occasional dysregulation is natural, it shouldn't be the norm. In my experience working with kids and families over the past three decades, it's clear that fostering self-regulation involves equipping children with the tools to handle emotional upsets and daily stressors such as but not limited to developing good problem-solving abilities and effective coping skills.Contrary to the misguided attempt to shield them from stress, it's essential for children to experience manageable stressors. This helps them build resilience, problem-solving capabilities, and coping skills. What we want to avoid is extreme stress, but exposing them to moderate stress allows them to develop a growth mindset. Modeling behaviors as a foundation of self-regulation becomes crucial as we recognize the diverse functions of different parts of the brain because intelligence alone isn't a universal solution; we need a range of skills, including social, emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and attention skills. Honest conversations with our children about our experiences and challenges foster authenticity. Adding brain-calming methods is also important in skill-building, particularly when facing regulation challenges. Exploring alternative interventions for medications, such as neurofeedback and dietary adjustments, is essential as we don't want medication to be the primary solution. Teaching emotional regulation to children.Encouraging kids to feel a range of emotions is important. Even though it might be tough, especially with stubborn or resistant teens, it's crucial to take small steps and seek professional help if needed. Teaching kids to identify and talk about their emotions is like coaching, helping them not get stuck in just one feeling. It's important to cheer on and highlight their positive actions, especially for teens who've had a tough time before. By consistently acknowledging and positively reinforcing even the smallest steps toward desired emotional behaviors, we not only help them recognize these successes but also create a positive environment that encourages growth and reflection. In my experience, practicing problem-solving emerges as a powerful strategy in developing stress tolerance. Coping skills play a significant role in tandem with problem-solving, providing a means to navigate stress and challenges effectively. By instilling these skills, we empower our kids to become adept decision-makers, equipped to make sound choices even when we're not around them.Anxiety Coping Skills For Teens Dysregulated KidsFostering Emotional RegulationDysregulated Kids Guide

Are you struggling with limiting your children's computer use? Here's a Purejoy take on the matter. Rather than being the enforcer of limits, how about empowering your child to discover their own boundaries? As a parent, I realized that my own experience of being constantly limited as a child led to resistance and a lack of self-awareness. Deciding to break that cycle with my own child, instead of imposing restrictions, I focused on supporting her self-regulation and helping her understand her own limits. It wasn't easy, especially with concerns about the impact of excessive screen time. But I learned to work through my triggers and approach it differently. By shifting my perspective, I recognized that her computer use wasn't about me. It was an opportunity for her to learn and grow. As an adult, I could guide her in self-regulation, rather than imposing my own fears and limits. Listen, now.

Do you deal with high levels of stress and anxiety? Do you feel like it takes a toll on your body? In this episode Dr. Scott Lyons gives us the tools to self-regulate and heal, and quit our addiction to chaos, crisis and drama that is keeping us in a place of stuck. We're constantly revving ourselves up, and it's wreaking havoc on our hormonal balance, on our overall health and well-being. So it's really important for us to recognize the impact of stress and trauma on our bodies and find ways to regulate ourselves, find ways to create that co-regulation and self-regulation so that we can restore and replenish our energy reserves and bring ourselves back into that window of optimal functioning.
