The first episode is on me and my family, “Anyone Can Get Broken.” You can watch it at the website masosfilm.com or on Youyube. As the website says, it's time for hope. The idea came from a friend, David Covington, CEO of RI International and one of the world's biggest advocates for suicide prevention. He had seen me speak years ago at a conference, and after being frustrated attending a suicide prevention meeting in DC that just wanted to keep doing the same old things, he thought of my talk and the idea of this series was born. We had a long talk, I agreed to participate, and we were off!

On the eve of the 1948 election, America was a fractured country. Racism was rampant, foreign relations were fraught, and political parties were more divided than ever. Americans were certain that President Harry S. Truman’s political career was over. “The ballots haven’t been counted,” noted political columnist Fred Othman, “but there seems to be no further need for holding up an affectional farewell to Harry Truman.” Truman’s own staff did not believe he could win. Nor did his wife, Bess. The only man in the world confident that Truman would win was Mr. Truman himself. And win he did.How did he do it? A confluence of factors that resemble those of today. According to A.J. Baime, today's guest and author of Dewey Defeats Truman, 1948 was a fight for the soul of a nation. We discuss some of most action-packed six months in American history, as Truman not only triumphs, but oversees watershed events—the passing of the Marshall plan, the acknowledgment of Israel as a new state, the careful attention to the origins of the Cold War, and the first desegregation of the military. Not only did Truman win the election, but he also succeeded in guiding his country forward at a critical time with high stakes and haunting parallels to the modern day.

Ken Unger didn’t set out to become America’s Soul Doctor. By the age of thirty he had been a pastor for five years and a husband for three and he was burning out on both. That’s when a spiritual retreat transformed his life forever. A profoundly nurturing community of genuine love and healing showed him how much lives could be helped in a short period of time. Experiential exercises, vulnerable authentic teachers and deep, intimate relationships transformed him in ways that prescription drugs, education and traditional counseling never could. When he got home, people asked him to offer similar retreats for friends and colleagues. He never imagined the powerful impact his retreats made on virtually everyone who attended. Now, almost 30 years later, he still offers life-changing Retreats to any who want to “transform their life in a weekend.” People who attend have likened them to a health spa for the soul.As he progressed on his own spiritual growth and healing journey his Retreats also evolved. To the basic Spiritual Growth Retreat he added a Becoming Childlike Retreat, an Inner Journey Retreat and in recent years a Spiritual Healing Retreat. Each level goes deeper into the psyche; each produces wonderful changes in virtually all who attend. Therapists say they are worth a year in therapy. As Ken learned to heal the psychic pain that almost destroyed his own life, people sought him out for their own personal healing. This birthed his amazing healing process known as STEP Therapy, Spiritual Therapy for Emotional Pain. His new book The Ultimate Breakthrough explains this simple, gentle, yet powerful healing process. Instead of treating symptoms in endless months and years of emotional archeological digs it heals the primal pain that fuels most of our problems. When clients wanted to treat depression without drugs, he developed Seminars like Peace without Prozac. To train businesses for better interpersonal skills, he designed Improving Your Emotional IQ. As relationships crumbled he designed Metamorphosis to teach people the skills that make relationships thrive. When companies struggled with dysfunction in the workplace, he started the Healed at Work Conferences.Perhaps what has most rewarding is the many people Ken talks to many years after attending his events who tell him they were a true watershed in their own spiritual growth, healing and development that five, ten, 20 years later they are still different as a result of one retreat or seminar.

Americans have been forced from their homes. Their jobs have been outsourced, their neighborhoods torn down to make room for freeways, their churches shuttered or taken over by social justice warriors, and their very families eviscerated by government programs that assume their functions and a hostile elite that deems them oppressive. Conservatives have always defended these elements of a rooted life as crucial to maintaining cultural continuity in the face of changing circumstances. Unfortunately, official “conservatism” has become fixated on abstract claims about freedom and the profits of “creative destruction.” Professor Bruce Frohnen writes in his new book, Coming Home: Reclaiming Americas Conservative Soul, that "Conservatism has never been the only voice in America, but it is the most distinctively American voice, emerging from the customs, norms, and dispositions of its people and grounded in the conviction that the capacity for self-governance provides a distinctly human dignity. Emphasizing the ongoing strength and importance of the conservative tradition, the authors describe our Constitution’s emphasis on maintaining order and balance and protecting the primary institutions of local life. Also important here is an understanding of changes in American demographics, economics, and politics. These changes complicated attempts to address the fundamentally antitraditional nature of slavery and Jim Crow, the destructive effects of globalism, and the increasing desire to look on the federal government as the guarantor of security and happiness. To reclaim our home as a people, we must rebuild the natural associations and primary institutions within which we live. This means protecting the fundamental relationships that make up our way of life. From philosophy to home construction, from theology to commerce, from charity to the essentials of household management, our ongoing practices are the source of our knowledge of truth, of one another, and of how we may live well together."

This week at In The Past Lane, the American History podcast, we learn about the long political struggle before the Civil War to rid the US of slavery. I speak with historian Graham Peck, author of Making an Antislavery Nation: Lincoln, Douglas, and the Battle over Freedom. It’s a fascinating conversation about how during the 70 years between the ratification of the Constitution and the Civil War, opponents of slavery gradually pushed the US to become an antislavery nation. But as Peck makes clear, this was no easy task, as proponents of slavery demanded its protection and pushed for its expansion. In the course of our discussion, Graham Peck discusses:   How political struggles between antislavery and proslavery settlers in Illinois in the 1820s presaged the national debates over slavery in the 1840s and 1850s. How and why antislavery leaders were content to leave slavery alone where it existed, but were adamantly opposed to allowing its extension into the American west. Why the controversy generated by the Kansas-Nebraska Act proved to be a key tipping point in the mobilization and unification of political antislavery into what became the Republican Party. How Abraham Lincoln emerged at this time as a leading advocate of what Peck calls an “antislavery nationalism” that argued that the US had been founded upon the principles of universal freedom with an eye toward to eventual eradication of slavery. And that this position was actually conservative, and that it was proslavery activists who wanted to expand slavery who were the radicals who threatened the nation’s wellbeing. The devastating story of how fugitive slaves drove the nation to Civil War For decades after its founding, America was really two nations--one slave, one free. There were many reasons why this composite nation ultimately broke apart, but the fact that enslaved black people repeatedly risked their lives to flee their masters in the South in search of freedom in the North proved that the "united" states was actually a lie. Fugitive slaves exposed the contradiction between the myth that slavery was a benign institution and the reality that a nation based on the principle of human equality was in fact a prison-house in which millions of Americans had no rights at all. By awakening northerners to the true nature of slavery, and by enraging southerners who demanded the return of their human "property," fugitive slaves forced the nation to confront the truth about itself. By 1850, with America on the verge of collapse, Congress reached what it hoped was a solution-- the notorious Compromise of 1850, which required that fugitive slaves be returned to their masters. Like so many political compromises before and since, it was a deal by which white Americans tried to advance their interests at the expense of black Americans. Yet the Fugitive Slave Act, intended to preserve the Union, in fact set the nation on the path to civil war. It divided not only the American nation, but also the hearts and minds of Americans who struggled with the timeless problem of when to submit to an unjust law and when to resist. The fugitive slave story illuminates what brought us to war with ourselves and the terrible legacies of slavery that are with us still.

It was during this time that God gave him a deep love for the land, the people and the language.Bill began studying Hebrew under the tutelage of a local rabbi and has since become quite prolific at reading and writing the Holy Tongue. For five years, Bill and his wife Beth served as Youth Pastors in a large church in Central Florida.
