OpenAI's artists reveal the shocking truth behind free labor

A group of 16 artists released OpenAI's unreleased text-to-video generator, Sora, after claiming exploitation for their unpaid work. They accessed Sora for testing and expressed frustration over the lack of compensation. The artists argued that OpenAI used their feedback for marketing purposes rather than genuine improvement, emphasizing their substantial voluntary contributions. They noted restrictions on sharing AI-generated videos and criticized the program's focus on public relations. In response to perceived exploitation, they made Sora publicly available, leading OpenAI to shut down access shortly after. An OpenAI spokesperson clarified that participation in the program was voluntary and not contingent upon feedback or tool usage.Learn more on this news visit us at: https://greyjournal.net/ Hosted on Acast. In Worthy of Freedom: Indenture and Free Labor in the Era of Emancipation (University of Chicago Press, 2024), Jonathan Connolly traces the normalization of indenture from its controversial beginnings to its widespread adoption across the British Empire during the nineteenth century. Initially viewed as a covert revival of slavery, indenture caused a scandal in Britain and India. But over time, economic conflict in the colonies altered public perceptions of indenture, now increasingly viewed as a legitimate form of free labor and a means of preserving the promise of abolition. Connolly explains how the large-scale, state-sponsored migration of Indian subjects to work on sugar plantations across Mauritius, British Guiana, and Trinidad transformed both the notion of post-slavery free labor and the political economy of emancipation. Excavating legal and public debates and tracing practical applications of the law, Connolly carefully reconstructs how the categories of free and unfree labor were made and remade to suit the interests of capital and empire, showing that emancipation was not simply a triumphal event but, rather, a deeply contested process. In so doing, he advances an original interpretation of how indenture changed the meaning of “freedom” in a post-abolition world. Jonathan Connolly is Assistant Professor of History at the University of Illinois Chicago. Connolly is a historian of the British empire with transnational interests in migration, the history of emancipation, and legal history. His research primarily concerns abolition and emancipation, imperial political and legal culture, and the category of free labor in the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean.  Your host for this episode is Mahishan Gnanaseharan, a PhD student in the Department of History at Stanford University. Tiziana Terranova has provided all of us with one of the sharpest critical accounts of the modern internet. In this episode, Tiziana, Roberto, and Marek discuss the labor dynamics at play in the contemporary digital economy -- from changes in the social status of creative work, the hidden labor underpinning the mechanics of the virtual world, and the material means by which AI resists pushes for decentralization. We reference a few of Tiziana's texts in the interview, which build foundational scaffolding for theories of what it means to live within networks: Free Labor: Producing Culture of the Digital EconomyNetwork Culture: Politics for the Information AgeAfter the Internet: Digital Networks between Capital and the CommonWe further recommend some background information about some of the theorists Tiziana references, including: Tiziana speaks about the Autonomist Marxist tradition beginning in Italy in the 60s, with key exponents like Paolo Virno, Antonio Negri, and Franco “Bifo” Berardi. Virno's recent The Idea of World: Public Intellect and Use of Life is a great primer for this conversation.Since we speak about Marx's Grundrisse, David Harvey has quite a good primer on this important but unusual text here.Something that informed Marek's thoughts in this conversation was an excellent recent episode of Aufhebunga Bunga (number 362 with Cory Doctorow).Tiziana references the work of sociologist Antonio Casilli; we are looking forward to the English translation of Waiting for Robots: An Inquiry Into Digital Labor into English.Denise Ferreira da Silva's Toward a Global Idea of Race comes up in the context of racialized capitalism.Peter Galison's War Against the Center is highly recommended as we speak about centralization. In the conversation on reproductive labor, Tiziana references Amelia DeFalco's work on posthuman care.Enjoy this fast-paced, dynamic episode as it grapples with the question: will algorithm ever set us free?

Today our discussion comes from our most recent annual conference: Why is Housing so Unaffordable? Causes and Solutions. We were lucky enough to have John Krinsky join us today. Dr. Krinsky is a professor of Political Science at the City University of New York (CUNY). Thus far, we've looked at a lot of trends and changes within the housing industry. We've heard a lot about programs and solutions, but, so far, have heard very little about the people inhabiting these homes. Today, we want to talk about the conditions facing the people these solutions are trying to help. Dr. Krinsky earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University and focuses on public policy, urban politics, and modern protest and activist movements. He is the author of "Who Cleans the Park" and "Free Labor." Both offer examinations of labor and job policies from state and local levels. Dr. Krinsky is also the co-editor of two journals: Metro-politics and Social Movement Studies. In addition to his work in academia, he is also the founder of New York City Community Land Initiative, a grassroots collective of non-profits and NGOs that promote community land trusts and housing for all. Together, we discussed some of the failures of market-based approaches, evaluating policy responses to poverty & inequality, and the differences in exchange- or monetary-value versus use-value. Although the idea of free labor sounds appealing, it really isn't from our perspective, and in this episode, we'll tell you why. When you hire someone, whether it's a paid position or an unpaid internship, you have to dedicate resources to get that person trained and up to speed. When someone wants to work for free to gain experience, it means they're not going to stick around for the long haul. Who would? They're not getting paid. We take time to invest in our team. We do it because our team makes us stronger and better forever. When you hire someone, you can expect it to take a year before you get real value out of that team member -- how long does someone really expect to work for free? If you liked this episode or any other episode -- head over to your podcast platform of choice and leave us a review! It helps us get found and motivates us to keep producing this content. Welcome to episode 50!Charles Kao grew up in a home that valued hard work and being your own boss, as Charles's father and mother owned and operated a restaurant and commercial real estate properties in Michigan.  Charles embraced travel and gaining knowledge in a variety of areas from exercise to banking to sales before taking a hint from his personal training clients regarding how to be wealthy and not simply rich.  Charles embarked on a plan to achieve the former, which to him meant having his money work for him without intense intervention on his part, while being able to set his own schedule and his own day.  This plan has paid off and allowed Charles to be actively involved in caring for his dad as his dad's health started to fail.  Tune in to hear how Charles put the pieces in place to accomplish his goals and dreams.  Enjoy!  Connect with Charles here: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/charlesckao/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@twinoakscapitalEmail: info@twinoakscap.com Thanks for listening! Buckle your seatbelt! If you like controversial hot takes about social media, sex work, mental health and feminism, this episode is for you! I'm joined by Angela Morris, Social Media Strategist, to talk about the origins of social media platforms founded and run by cis, white, het men… AND how they are built upon the unpaid labor of women who those same platforms ultimately censor and shadow-ban. We discuss sex workers' influence on the popularity of social media itself, and the parallels between them and feminist entrepreneurs marketing their businesses on social media (turns out we're not so different in the eyes of Mark Zuckerberg). Angela's passion for helping women and queer folks to reclaim their time, energy and mental health from the pitfalls of social media has led her to create a program called Quiet Quitting Instagram. You're definitely going to want to hear about it, and you'll be thinking about this episode long after you've finished listening. The Jan. 6 hearings have made it clear that Donald Trump led a concerted, monthslong effort to overturn a democratic election. The extensive interviews — over 1,000 — that the House select committee conducted prove that Trump was told there was no evidence of election fraud, but he pressed his anti-democratic case regardless. And it appears that the hearings may be making an impact on public opinion: An ABC News/Ipsos survey released Sunday found that 58 percent of respondents believe Trump should be charged with a crime for his role in the Jan. 6 attack, up from 52 percent in April. But after all the evidence comes to light, will he actually face legal consequences? If the answer is no, then what might future presidents — including, perhaps, Trump himself — be emboldened to do? And what would that mean for the future of the American political system?Jamelle Bouie is a Times Opinion columnist and co-host of the podcast “Unclear and Present Danger.” Bouie brings a remarkable historical depth to his writing about American politics. His columns about Jan. 6 — and the troubling idiosyncrasies of Trump's presidency before it — have shown how the former president's illiberal actions have threatened the constitutional foundation of American government. So I asked him on the show to help me process the Jan. 6 hearings with an eye to America's past, and also to its uncertain future. We discuss why Jan. 6 may be not just an insurrection but “a kind of revolution or, at least, the very beginning of one”; how the anti-democratic nature of the American Constitution makes our system vulnerable to demagogues like Trump; the most important takeaways from the hearings so far; what could happen in 2024 if Trump is allowed to walk free; what Trump allies are already doing to gain power over elections; why refusing to prosecute Trump would itself be a “radical act”; why Republicans have grown increasingly suspicious of — and hostile to — representative democracy; why Bouie thinks prosecuting Trump would be worth the political fallout it would cause; and more.Mentioned:“Trump Had a Mob. One of the motivations behind the anti-slavery movement in the 1850s in the United States was the belief in the Slave Power conspiracy. Abolitionists and their allies argued that a confederation of powerful slaveholders secretly plotted to capture the federal government of the US and direct its might towards the preservation and extension of slavery. The abolitionists were wrong about one major thing: it wasn't that much of a secret.
