With so many progressive with legitimately powerful lived experiences in office, and do little progress, is that enough? Is Vilela willing to be genuinely adversarial to the Democratic party? If another #ForceTheVote scenario arose, would she withhold her vote for a must pass bill, or come out openly against Nancy Pelosi and House leadership? Briahna asked all this and more. Nina Turner talks about her latest congressional race, which she lost, where the Congressional Progressives Caucus was, & what's next for her. Amy Vilela talks about her own congressional race for Nevada's First District. https://twitter.com/amy4thepeople https://twitter.com/ninaturner Amy Vilela grew up in poverty, relying on programs like WIC & SNAP in order to make ends meet as a single-mother. She took classes at night while working multiple jobs to become the first in her family to earn a degree. She became a national advocate for Medicare for All after her daughter Shalynne died at the hands of our nation's profit-driven healthcare system. After working her way up to become a CFO, Amy has since retooled her professional experience to provide vital campaign services to other progressive candidates. In 2020, serving as a State Co-chair, Amy led the charge for Bernie Sanders' landslide victory in the Nevada caucuses. The Vilelas first moved to Nevada when her husband, Major David Vilela, was transferred to Creech Air Force Base. If elected, she would be the first ever active duty military spouse to serve in Congress. In addition to Congresswoman Cori Bush & Senator Nina Turner, Amy's campaign has attracted national attention and has been endorsed by Brand New Congress, Sunrise Movement Las Vegas, the Center for Biological Diversity & more. Nina Turner, the oldest of seven children, grew up in a working-class family in Cleveland's Lee-Harvard community. Her Mother was a nurse's aide & her Father was a truck driver. Experiencing the impact of income inequality firsthand, Turner took her first job at age 14 to help support her siblings & keep the family afloat. Turner's Mother battled high blood pressure her entire life & died at age 42. This experience exposed to Turner the serious problems with our health care system, especially for Black & lower-income families. After working her way through college and graduate school (she earned an Associate's Degree from Cuyahoga Community College & a Bachelor's and Master's from Cleveland State University), she started a career dedicated to keeping Ohio working families afloat too. Turner made history in 2005 as the first African American woman to represent Ward One on the Cleveland City Council, & again in 2008 as the first African American woman to serve as a State Senator in Ohio's 25th District. In the legislature, Turner repeatedly defended against attacks on women's health care freedom & partnered with working families & organized labor to protect collective bargaining rights. As a champion for criminal justice reform, she led the effort to create Ohio's first task force on police & community relations in the wake of tragic police killings in Ohio & across the country. Turner went on to serve as the Chair of Party Engagement for the Ohio Democratic Party, leading the effort to build a more robust & inclusive organizing infrastructure & support for local Democratic candidates across the State. Turner took her record of accomplishment & commitment to justice nationwide when she became a national surrogate for Bernie Sanders' 2016 Presidential campaign & National Co-Chair for Bernie 2020. In those roles, she traveled coast to coast building support for progressive values such as a $15 living wage, free education from kindergarten through college & health care as a human right in the form of Medicare for All. Between those two campaigns, Turner also served as the President of the national grassroots political organization “Our Revolution.” Nina Turner is a wife, mother & proud grandmother. A former Assistant Professor of History at her alma mater Cuyahoga Community College, she is also the current host of the “Hello Somebody” podcast on iHeartRadio. ***Please support The Katie Halper Show *** On Patreon https://www.patreon.com/thekatiehalpershow Follow Katie on Twitter: https://twitter.com/kthalps Callin link: https://www.callin.com/episode/nina-turner-amy-vilela-qsJgTwzHDK

Congressional candidate for Nevada's first district Amy Vilela joins Jess on the show to discuss her campaign!Amy Vilela https://www.amyvilela.org/ was in Knock Down The House alongside Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Congresswoman Cori Bush. Amy's world was shattered when lost her daughter, Shalynne, to the hands of our for-profit healthcare system after being denied care. The last thing she ever said to her daughter, holding her in her arms, was you will not have died in vein. Since then, Amy's become one of the leading voices in the country fighting for Medicare For All, was a surrogate for Bernie Sanders, and helped elected Congressman Jamaal Bowman and Congresswoman Bush. Since launching in April, Amy has already been endorsed by Senator Nina Turner, Congresswoman Bush, Sunrise Las Vegas, and the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund. If elected, she would become the first military spouse in Congress.

Amy recounts how her daughter went to Centennial Hills Hospital in Las Vegas with incredible leg pain and was seemingly denied full treatment because she did not have health insurance. Shalynne would leave the hospital with a leg brace and instructions not to take it off except to bathe - prime conditions for her condition to deteriorate. She would be rushed to another ER 3 weeks later to a hospital where she would eventually succumb to a pulmonary embolism. Shalynne's story is a gripping account of what is wrong with a 'for-profit' health care system. Amy has dedicated her efforts to bringing Shalynne's story to the fore in hopes others don't suffer the way her daughter did. It's the last show of the year, and you know what that means (at least you should if you're a fan of the show). This week on Open Sources Guelph, it's that time again for the annual movies show, as we look back at some of our favourite politically themed movies. This year, we've got a doc about the new class of politicians, a student council election, a slice of American political history, and a new film about social inequality. This Thursday, December 26, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Adam's #1 Pick: Election (1999). "Tracy Flick is running unopposed for this year's high school student election. But school civics teacher Jim McAllister has a different plan. Partly to establish a more democratic election, and partly to satisfy some deep personal anger toward Tracy, Jim talks popular varsity football player Paul Metzler to run for president as well. Chaos ensues." Scotty's #1 Pick: Knock Down the House (2019. "Four exceptional women mount grassroots campaigns against powerful incumbents in Knock Down the House, an inspiring look at the 2018 midterm elections that tipped the balance of power. When tragedy struck her family in the middle of the financial crisis, Bronx-born Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had to work double shifts as a bartender to save her home from foreclosure. After losing a loved one to a preventable medical condition, Amy Vilela didn't know what to do with the anger she felt about America's broken health care system. Cori Bush, a registered nurse and pastor, was drawn to the streets when the police shooting of an unarmed black man brought protests and tanks into her neighborhood. A coal miner's daughter, Paula Jean Swearengin was fed up with watching her friends and family suffer from the environmental effects of the coal industry." Adam's #2 Pick: Parasite (2019). "All unemployed, Ki-taek and his family take peculiar interest in the wealthy and glamorous Parks, as they ingratiate themselves into their lives and get entangled in an unexpected incident." Scotty's #2 Pick: Chappaquiddick (2018). "The scandal and mysterious events surrounding the tragic drowning of a young woman, as Ted Kennedy drove his car off the infamous bridge, are revealed in the new movie starring Jason Clarke as Ted Kennedy and Kate Mara as Mary Jo Kopechne. Not only did this event take the life of an aspiring political strategist and Kennedy insider, but it ultimately changed the course of presidential history forever. Through true accounts, documented in the inquest from the investigation in 1969, director John Curran and writers Andrew Logan and Taylor Allen, intimately expose the broad reach of political power, the influence of America's most celebrated family; and the vulnerability of Ted Kennedy, the youngest son, in the shadow of his family legacy." Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.
#DANNYSTRONG: OUR GOVERNMENT AND FOR-PROFIT HEALTHCARE LET PEOPLE DIE.Scott Desnoyers, interviewed by (the non-pedophile, non-billionaire, non-dead) Jeff Epstein for Historic.ly. Recorded August 7, 2019. You can find Historic.ly on the web, Twitter, and Facebook. You can find Jeff at Citizens’ Media TV on Twitter, Facebook, and on the web. Music by Wreck Tech, who can be found on SoundCloud and Spotify.Copy edited by Ben SzioliOn May 9, 2019, Scott Desnoyers saw a Facebook post from his son. It had a picture of a body of water from the inside of a truck, accompanied by the message (paraphrasing) “I’m done with this world.” Scott noticed the timestamp on the post, which read “27 seconds ago.” Scott raced to his car and tried to save his son. Unfortunately, Scott drove to the wrong spot, but it didn’t matter; the correct spot was too far away anyway. His 29-year-old son, Danny, died. Two weeks prior, Danny missed a twenty dollar payment for his depression medication. This happened partially because the notice was sent to his ex’s house, where he no longer lived and, due to a restraining order, was not allowed to go. He paid the bill but was told by his insurance company, Fidelis, that he would have to wait a month before he could restart his prescription. (Until then, he could pay the full price of $250, but he was unable to afford it.)As discussed in our interview, the above tweet was deleted by Twitter (unfortunately orphaning the thousands of stories in response to it), but here is a link to Scott’s tweet that responds to it.What kind of society puts its citizens in a position where failing to pay a twenty dollar bill – whether intentional or not – can cost them their lives; where multi-billion dollar companies are allowed to endanger a life over twenty dollars? The for-profit health insurance industry and the price-gouging pharmaceutical industry are, plain and simple, monsters. They allow people to die simply because doing so increases their profit. But maximizing profit is in their nature – it’s their fiduciary duty. The bigger problem is the system that allows it to happen. Our government could protect us and provide us with life-saving saving medication for free, but instead they allow these monsters to prey upon us. Our federal representatives withhold from their people what they so desperately need (and which is available in abundance!), while quietly taking cash from the monsters themselves. Our so-called representatives step aside and look the other way – because they would rather get a piece of the action.Scott shares his own story and the stories of other parents who have also been devastated by the American for-profit healthcare system. He also describes how 2020 presidential candidate Kamala Harris pulled a bait and switch at Scott’s expense, using Danny’s story to prop up the for-profit insurance industry, despite giving the strong appearance that she would do the very opposite. Finally, Scott talks about his upcoming rally in Washington DC, organized with the assistance of former congressional candidate Amy Vilela, whose own daughter was also left to die by the for-profit insurance industry. The rally is still being planned, but confirmed guests include Vilela and Our Revolution President Nina Turner, and tentative guests include Congresswomen Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Senator and 2020 presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders. You can find Scott on Twitter at @scottdesno. For more on Scott’s story, here is an in-depth interview with Jordan Chariton on Status Coup.Yet another horror story. Amy Vilela entered into politics after the death of her daughter, Shalynne's, needless death at the hands of the USA’s profit-driven healthcare system. Losing Shalynne became a defining moment in her life. The transformation out of grief and into a position of strength was a long journey. Although her life has been full of struggle – and, more recently, tragedy – her experiences have strengthened her resolve in the fight for justice. Her journey is shown in the 2019 documentary on Netflix “Knock Down The House”, which follows 4 female progressive candidates as they campaign against prominent incumbents in the 2018 midterm election. In this episode we talk about her relationship with her daughter and the circumstances of her death, her journey into politics, and grief dreams of her daughter. In a special episode this week, Molli and MK discuss the documentary Knock Down the House, a Netflix film that follows the 2018 campaigns of four female candidates: Amy Vilela, Paula Jean Swearengin, Cori Bush, and Alexandria Ocasia-Cortez. The film is an inspiring reminder of how individuals all over the country turned their dissatisfaction, frustration, and anger into action to try and create powerful, positive change. A reminder we felt we needed today as we witness attacks on human rights' in this country, specifically around and individual's right and access to safe healthcare procedures. So we at She's Thriving are making a commitment to our community ahead of the 2020 elections and a commitment to how we want to use this platform in general. We will continue to discuss the things that matter, share the stories we think aren't being heard, provide a space and opportunities for you to GET INVOLVED, and hold each other's hands as we learn and grow and work to build a better world for ourselves and one another.
It’s been about a year since New York’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other progressive women around the country were busy taking on powerful Democratic incumbents during the 2018 midterms. St. Louisan Cori Bush was one of them, and her challenge of longtime Congressman Lacy Clay fell short in the primaries. But she and the three other candidates whose campaigns are featured in the new Netflix documentary “Knock Down The House” say 2018 was just the beginning. Bush and fellow progressive Amy Vilela, of Nevada, were both in St. Louis last week for the film’s premiere in select theaters including the Tivoli. In this episode of "St. Louis on the Air," they talk with producer Evie Hemphill.
Barr’s testimony shows that we are one step closer to full-blown authoritarianism. House Dems troll Barr’s no-show with chicken. The Sunrise Movement gets profiled in Rolling Stone as young activists gear up to ensure that climate action is front and center in the Democratic primary debates and the 2020 election. The first-ever hearing on Medicare for All took place in this House this week. Pramila Jayapal gets it done. Stacey Abrams passes on a Georgia Senate run. Cecile Richards, Alicia Garza, and Ai-jen Poo join forces to launch a new PAC called Supermajority. Supermajority will partner with different groups to educate and train two million women in activism and political participation across the country. According to a press release sent to ELLE.com, Supermajority not only aims to ensure a women's agenda is represented at the ballot box in 2020, but also to drive change around issues like the wage gap, childcare costs, maternal mortality rates, family leave, and family separation at the border. Old School Labor makes a strong, white showing for Biden in Pittsburgh this week. Michael Bennet is running for president. Googling “who is Michael Bennet” now. Eric Levitz of New York Mag nails it in his piece, “Why I — a Bland White Guy You’ve Never Heard Of — Am Running for President.” Knock Down the House is now out on Netflix. The film is directed by Rachel Lears and it follows the 2018 primary campaigns of four progressive Democrats taking on entrenched, big money politicians - Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Amy Vilela, Cori Bush, and Paula Jean Swearengin. Navy sailors aboard the USS. On Tuesday, Daryl Metcalfe invited roughly 150 anti-vaxxers and their disease-carrying, unvaccinated, children to the Pennsylvania Capitol and gave their conspiracy theories a platform by hosting a press conference and introducing legislation to protect anti-vaxxers. If that wasn’t enough, on Wednesday, the Senate Republican Policy Committee tried to one-up Metcalfe by hosting another sham climate change hearing that had Koch Brother funded geographers, meteorologists, and geologists. One big takeaway from the hearing is that Senator Scott Martin added “novice Hurricane tracker” to his resume. Summer Lee along with PA House and Senate Dems held a police accountability rally in the wake of the Antwon Rose verdict. Speakers included local community leaders and Antwon’s mother, Michelle Kenney. Looking forward to next week, March on Harrisburg will be arriving on Monday fighting for gift bans. If you listen to this podcast, you know Jason Dick loves movies, especially if they relate to politics. So on occasion, we’re going to bring you conversations with directors and actors — and even some movie reviews — for all the political movie-lovers out there. In this episode, we talk with Rachel Lears, director of the Netflix documentary “Knock Down the House,” which profiles four congressional challengers in 2018 and how they fared (spoiler alert: one of them is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez). Lears and one of the candidates, Amy Vilela, discuss the movie, how campaigns work and the relationships that developed along the way in this bonus episode of Political Theater. Amy Vilela is much much more than a grieving mother, but because she is a grieving mother, she will never give up.We don't have time to wait around for career politicians, their donors or special interests to do the right thing. Episode 9 of Season 2 is special as it's rich with timely and crucial information that's key to informing a mass audience to the truths of cannabis. Some of the aspects covered include: the dangers of the current health care system, the effects of cannabis as medicine on the elderly, those with disease in general, those with sick children, those who need alternatives to the side-effects of pharmacuetical drugs and those with chronic pain. We discuss a holistic approach to cannabis laws - including expunging records for cannabis crimes and resolving the economic, social and political contradictions that exist across states and our federal landscape today.
In this edition of The Humanist Report we'll discuss an inconvenient truth about the Democratic Party: they're only good at resisting insofar as that pertains to blocking progressives from electoral victories. We'll talk about potential shenanigans that may occur in 2020 if Bernie Sanders decides to run again and how the Democratic Party establishment is shunning progressive candidates that don't raise large sums of money from multinational corporations and billionaires. Additionally, Senate Democrats caved again, and DREAMers are now only relying on House Democrats to save them. Finally, we'll talk about net neutrality and tell you what's new and before the show ends, Amy Vilela will drop by to give us an update on her campaign. All of these topics are covered here—enjoy!

Shalynne would leave the hospital with a leg brace and instructions not to take it off except to bathe - prime conditions for her condition to deteriorate. She would be rushed to another ER 3 weeks later to a hospital where she would eventually succumb to a pulmonary embolism.Shalynne's story is a gripping account of what is wrong with a 'for-profit' health care system. Amy has dedicated her efforts to bringing Shalynne's story to the fore in hopes others don't suffer the way her daughter did. In this episode, we'll discuss the aftermath of the Republican Party's ‘American Health Care Act' (aka “Trumpcare”) failure. The bill collapsed after more Senate Republicans announced their opposition to the bill. It lead to intra-party conflict, and a demoralized, angry Trump. We'll also talk about how Bernie Sanders is capitalizing on this situation, and how single-payer got both a new friend and enemy this week in Al Gore and President Trump, respectively. We'll also talk about the Democratic Party's “donor primary” as well as Attorney General Jeff Sessions' decision to bring back one of the least popular policies in the country: civil asset forfeiture. Finally, we'll bring you an exclusive announcement from last week about how Amy Vilela, a pro-Medicare for All 2018 candidate is challenging Rep. Ruben Kihuen after he refused to support single-payer healthcare. These topics and more are discussed in this episode. Enjoy!
