Newt talks with Grady Connolly, founder of Social Thomist and author of the new book “Basilicas: A Pilgrim's Guide to America's Most Remarkable Catholic Churches.” Connolly recounts his path from a small town in Maine to a full scholarship at Catholic University of America, where daily visits to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. inspired a lifelong devotion to his faith. He describes learning how to build a major following for Catholic content online. Their discussion turns to Connolly's four-year quest to visit all 94 minor basilicas in the United States plus the four papal basilicas in Rome, what officially makes a church a "basilica," and standout stops like The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis and the immigrant built, The Basilica of St. Fidelis in Victoria, Kansas. April 24th, 2026: St Fidelis of Sigmaringen - Standing Up for the Faith when You Don't Want To; St Gamaliel the Pharisee; St Fidelis - Necessity for a Lively Faith; Our Lady - Gateway to the New Jerusalem; Faithful Priest & Martyr
Send us Fan MailHe was winning in the courts and losing peace in his soul. Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen begins as Mark Roy, a brilliant lawyer in post-Reformation Europe, known for honesty and defending the poor. But the more he sees corruption and spiritual emptiness around him, the more a deeper call breaks through: truth is not just something to argue for, it's someone to follow. We walk through Fidelis's conversion of heart and his radical decision to leave prestige behind for the Capuchin Franciscans. That choice reshapes everything: Franciscan poverty, disciplined prayer, penance, and preaching become the engine of his courage. You'll hear why his defense of Catholic doctrine is never about scoring points, and how he pairs clarity with charity while proclaiming the Real Presence in the Eucharist, the sacraments, the communion of saints, and apostolic authority. Then the story narrows to the Grisons region of Switzerland, where Calvinism has taken root and hostility toward Catholic priests is dangerous and personal. Fidelis refuses to soften the message or abandon his flock, even as persecution grows. His final day on April 24, 1622 ends in martyrdom after Mass at Sewis, and his last witness is not rage but forgiveness. We also reflect on the reported miracles and conversions that follow, and what his life means for Catholics trying to stand for truth in everyday choices. If Saint Fidelis's story strengthens your faith, subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review so more pilgrims can find the saints. Today's saint was given the name Fidelis which is Latin for "faithful". He is the first martyr of the Vatican's Congregation for the Propagation of the faith. Sometimes people's names mean something and Fr. Kubicki is here to show why on today's reflection.
Friday of the Third Week of Easter Optional Memorial of St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen, 1577-1622; taught philosophy while earning a legal degree at the University of Freiberg in Germany; he became known as the "poor man's lawyer"; ultimately, he decided he wanted to work for God; after ordination, he was appointed to the Congregation for the Spreading of the Faith, but was martyred by several Austrian soldiers for his steadfast views on the faith Office of Readings and Morning Prayer for 4/24/26 Gospel: John 6:52-59
1 I am the true vine; and my Father is the husbandman. 2 Every branch in me, that beareth not fruit, he will take away: and every one that beareth fruit, he will purge it, that it may bring forth more fruit. 3 Now you are clean by reason of the word, which I have spoken to you.Jam vos mundi estis propter sermonem quem locutus sum vobis. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abide in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in me.Manete in me, et ego in vobis. Sicut palmes non potest fere fructum a semetipso, nisi manserit in vite, sic nec vos, nisi in me manseritis. 5 I am the vine: you the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing.Ego sum vitis, vos palmites : qui manet in me, et ego in eo, hic fert fructum multum, quia sine me nihil potestis facere. 6 If any one abide not in me, he shall be cast forth as a branch, and shall wither, and they shall gather him up, and cast him into the fire, and he burneth. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, you shall ask whatever you will, and it shall be done unto you. St Fidelis was at first the "Advocate of the poor." He then entered the order of Friar Minors, preached the Word of God, and was stabbed to death by Protestant soldiers A.D. 1622.
Full Text of Readings Friday of the Third Week of Easter Lectionary: 277 The Saint of the day is Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen's Story If a poor man needed some clothing, Fidelis would often give the man the clothes right off his back. Complete generosity to others characterized this saint's life. Born in 1577, Mark Rey became a lawyer who constantly upheld the causes of the poor and oppressed people. Nicknamed “the poor man's lawyer,” Rey soon grew disgusted with the corruption and injustice he saw among his colleagues. He left his law career to become a priest, joining his brother George as a member of the Capuchin Order. Fidelis was his religious name. His wealth was divided between needy seminarians and the poor. As a follower of Saint Francis of Assisi, Fidelis continued his devotion to the weak and needy. During a severe epidemic in a city where he was guardian of a friary, Fidelis cared for and cured many sick soldiers. Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen was appointed head of a group of Capuchins sent to preach against the Calvinists and Zwinglians in Switzerland. Almost certain violence threatened. Those who observed the mission felt that success was more attributable to the prayer of Fidelis during the night than to his sermons and instructions. He was accused of opposing the peasants' national aspirations for independence from Austria. While he was preaching at Seewis, to which he had gone against the advice of his friends, a gun was fired at him, but he escaped unharmed. A Protestant offered to shelter Fidelis, but he declined, saying his life was in God's hands. On the road back, he was set upon by a group of armed men and killed. Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen was canonized in 1746. Fifteen years later he was recognized as a martyr. Reflection Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen's constant prayer was that he be kept completely faithful to God and not give in to any lukewarmness or apathy. He was often heard to exclaim, “Woe to me if I should prove myself but a halfhearted soldier in the service of my thorn-crowned Captain.” His prayer against apathy, and his concern for the poor and weak make him a saint whose example is valuable today. The modern Church is calling us to follow the example of “the poor man's lawyer” by sharing ourselves and our talents with those less fortunate and by working for justice in the world.Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

What is the strategic thinking behind The Fidelis Partnership's unique business model?According to CEO Richard Brindle the firm is now increasingly perceived by balance sheet reinsurers as a distributor, as opposed to a direct competitor. He tells Behind the Headlines that the diverse structure – including backing from a listed balance sheet, plus two Lloyd's syndicates and MGA incubator Pine Walk – is the best thing he has built in his careerThe firm is ploughing ahead with its strategy to expand in high growth global markets beyond insurance's traditional heartlands – an area where he says the wider industry's track record has been “woeful”.In a typically forthright interview, the serial entrepreneur also shares his views on the 1.1 reinsurance renewals, opportunities linked to data centres, and the work ethic in the City.Plus, Fiona Robertson discusses the Insurance Insider editorial team's predictions for the major themes to shape 2026.

In February 1917, Our Lady asked three children in Fatima to make reparation to her Immaculate Heart. Of those sins she requested reparation for was in response to those who fostered in the hearts of children indifference or contempt for our Blessed Mother. Distressingly, in our own time, we witness the Church fostering that very indifference, indeed blasphemy, toward Our Lady out of a distorted belief in "clarifying" the proper titles we should ascribe to her. That is why it is imperative that we daily renew our devotion to the Blessed Virgin, seeking always on behalf of ourselves and the entire Church forgiveness for this great offense.
On July 13, 1917, Our Lady appeared for the second time to the three children of Fatima. She promised to work a miracle on October 13, so that everyone would believe. Then, she asked the children to sacrifice themselves for sinners and to pray the following prayer when doing so: “O Jesus, it is for love of you, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.”These three young children were already familiar with the conception of praying and making sacrifices in order to make up for sin.God had sent an angel to them the year before, to prepare them for the apparitions of Our Lady. This guardian angel of Portugal taught the children about their mission: it was for them to do prayer and penance for the conversion of sinners and in reparation for sin, to stop sin from being committed in the future and to repair for sin already committed in the past.Later, Our Lady came to ask for the practice of the five first Saturdays devotion. This is a devotion of reparation for the offenses committed against Our Lady's Immaculate Heart. There are five first Saturdays because there are five types of blasphemies that are committed against Our Lady. The fourth type is the “blasphemies of those who seek openly to foster in the hearts of children indifference or contempt for this Immaculate Mother.”These facts about the message of Fatima show us that Heaven takes very seriously the offenses committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Our Lady would not come down on earth, speak to the three children, and work incredible miracles for no reason.Another thing that we learn is that the work of reparation is very important. Every sin is a crime against God, an injustice. Every sin deserves a punishment to make up for the injustice. There are many sins being committed around the world all the time. God looks for souls who are willing to pay for the sins of mankind. Our Lord and Our Lady, of course, paid a great price for the sins of the world, enough to wipe them all away. However, God did not want to leave us with nothing to do in the supernatural order. Rather, God asks that we unite with the work of Our Lord and Our Lady to do something to pay for sin ourselves. He asks for the work of “reparation”, making up for sin by prayer and sacrifice. This is what the Sacred Heart asked of St. Margaret Mary and us. This is what the Immaculate Heart asked of the three children of Fatima and us.Doing this work is part of living a Catholic life. The most important sins for us to make reparation for are sins of blasphemy. St. Thomas says that blasphemy is “the disparagement of some surpassing goodness, especially that of God”.What Fr. Pagliarani and Fr. Fullerton are asking us to do is to make reparation for a sort of blasphemy against the Mother of God in the form of the document Mater Populi Fidelis of the Dicastery of the Doctrine of the Faith. This document disparages a surpassing goodness, namely, the roles of Our Lady as Co-Redemptrix and Mediatrix of All Graces.
In this video we will break down what are we to think of the titles of Co-Redemptrix and Mediatrix of all Graces, and we examine the results of the Doctrinal Note "Mater Populi Fidelis"

A mythic love story set in Trinidad, Ayanna Lloyd Banwo's radiant debut is a masterwork of lush imagination and exuberant storytelling—a spellbinding and hopeful novel about inheritance, loss, and love's seismic power to heal.In the old house on a hill, where the city meets the rainforest, Yejide's mother is dying. She is leaving behind a legacy that now passes to Yejide: one St Bernard woman in every generation has the power to shepherd the city's souls into the afterlife. But after years of suffering her mother's neglect and bitterness, Yejide is looking for a way out. Raised in the countryside by a devout Rastafarian mother, Darwin has always abided by the religious commandment not to interact with death. He has never been to a funeral, much less seen a dead body. But when the only job he can find is grave digging, he must betray the life his mother built for him in order to provide for them both. Newly shorn of his dreadlocks and his past, and determined to prove himself, Darwin finds himself adrift in a city electric with possibility and danger. Yejide and Darwin will meet inside the gates of Fidelis, an ancient and sprawling cemetery, where the dead lie uneasy in their graves and a reckoning with fate beckons them both.

In this episode we discuss the recent Vatican document published by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith regarding Mary (Mater Popoli Fidelis) and her title of "Co-redemptrix". How should evangelicals think through this and respond to it? We also discuss Leonardo's October Vatican File that concerns recent remarks Pope Leo made concerning Mary, and that are therefore relevant to this discussion.Support the show

A whole lot of Roman Catholics around the world awoke today to deep disappointment. Not only did the new Papal document, Mater Papuli Fidelis, not define the 5th Marian dogma, it was, evidently, meant to be the stake in the heart of the movement to have that dogma defined. This was quite a shock to many, but in reality, this new document proves once again one fundamental reality: Rome operates on her own authority (sola ecclesia) and does not have access to anything that is truly "Apostolic tradition." We dive into the topic, and the documentation, today on the program, but will need to finish up on Thursday. This is a pretty important discussion of a central and current discussion relating to modern Roman Catholicism.
Every year for the past four years I have been lucky enough to be given time with Richard Brindle at the opening of the Monte Carlo Rendezvous and every year we have had the sort of conversation that helps set the tone for the rest of the gathering and indeed the rest for the calendar year and into the next. This year was no exception. As ever, Richard was forceful, unambiguous and direct on all topics, from the state of the market and the growth opportunities within it to what The Fidelis Partnership has learnt from its experience with the Russia-Ukraine Aviation War losses and the California wildfires. Richard was joined by John-Paul O'Hare, the Fidelis Partnership's Group Director of Underwriting. As the discussion took flight and encompassed subjects as diverse as the Application of Ai and algorithmic underwriting to the insurance work ethic, service levels and the return to the office, John-Paul held his own. As a result I can highly recommend this episode for an original and uncompromising view on the opportunities and threats facing the global specialty insurance and reinsurance markets in 2026 and beyond. Full Text of ReadingsThursday in the Octave of Easter Lectionary: 264The Saint of the day is Saint Fidelis of SigmaringenSaint Fidelis of Sigmaringen's Story If a poor man needed some clothing, Fidelis would often give the man the clothes right off his back. He was appointed head of a group of Capuchins sent to preach against the Calvinists and Zwinglians in Switzerland. Fidelis was canonized in 1746. Fifteen years later he was recognized as a martyr. Reflection Fidelis' constant prayer was that he be kept completely faithful to God and not give in to any lukewarmness or apathy. He was often heard to exclaim, “Woe to me if I should prove myself but a halfhearted soldier in the service of my thorn-crowned Captain.” His prayer against apathy, and his concern for the poor and weak make him a saint whose example is valuable today. The modern Church is calling us to follow the example of “the poor man's lawyer” by sharing ourselves and our talents with those less fortunate and by working for justice in the world. Episode 087: This week, Kyle Van Pelt talks with Rick Simonetti, CEO and Head of Wealth Planning of Fidelis Capital Partners, to explore what it takes to serve ultra-high-net-worth families with excellence. Rick shares how Fidelis was built on the foundation of faithfulness—delivering on promises through deep collaboration, proactive planning, and personalized service. They discuss the importance of mentorship, family meetings, interdisciplinary teams, and how true success lies in preparing future generations. From structuring internal teams to navigating external partnerships, Rick offers practical wisdom for firms looking to elevate their service model and create lasting impact for their clients. In this episode: (00:00) - Intro (02:54) - Rick's money moment (05:50) - CPA firms vs. wealth management: business model breakdown [10:45] - Building collaborative relationships with experts (16:35) - Why “faithfulness” became the foundation of Fidelis (19:40) - Succession by design: mentorship and developing next-gen advisors (26:55) - Crafting custom solutions for ultra-high-net-worth families (32:24) - The power of integration: inside Fidelis' team-based model (36:30) - How Fidelis earns trust and referrals from ultra-high-net-worth clients (42:32) - Rick's outlook on the future of serving ultra-high-net-worth clients (46:29) - Milemarker Minute Key Takeaways Financial plans don't fail because they were poorly designed—they fail because they weren't maintained, optimized, or passed on well. Advisors should prioritize family meetings and mentorship to ensure heirs are ready to step into leadership when the time comes. Wealth managers don't have to do it all in-house. In fact, creating strong, collaborative relationships with attorneys and CPAs leads to better outcomes for clients and smoother execution. The key is showing you're there to make everyone's job easier—not replace them. At Fidelis, planning and investment professionals sit in the same meetings with clients. This integrated approach allows for real-time problem-solving, clearer communication, and a seamless experience for families. It's a model built on visibility, not silos. Mentorship creates real succession—not disruption. Fidelis intentionally develops “next-up” advisors by embedding them in client relationships long before a transition is needed. It's a model that preserves institutional knowledge, builds trust, and gives clients peace of mind about who's carrying the torch next. Quotes "One of the foundational elements of our firm was that we wanted to be faithful to the promise of serving multiple generations." ~ Rick Simonetti “There's just no better endorsement, nothing more humbling and nothing for which we're more grateful than being able to serve families the way that we do, which results in them being thrilled to the point of saying, ‘Hey, I'm going to entrust someone I care deeply about to you.'” ~ Rick Simonetti "Nothing replaces sitting with clients and talking through issues, hosting family meetings, having all these questions come up and then figuring out how to explain them in a way that makes the complex simple or understandable." ~ Rick Simonetti Links Rick Simonetti on LinkedIn Fidelis Capital Partners Wells Fargo Joe Diffley Merrill Lynch Christopher Gunster Neale Ellis Connect with our hosts Milemarker.co Kyle on LinkedIn Jud on LinkedIn Subscribe and stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify YouTube Produce game-changing content with Turncast Turncast helps your company grow by producing top-quality content and fostering transformative conversations. Zimbabwe born and South Africa educated, Warrick Beaver started his working life as an HR professional in the fashion retail industry. “If you're talking about journeys to insurance, fashion and retail is probably as far away as you can imagine. I was taught that you were a retailer first and an HR professional second”, says Warrick.“The lesson learned was, 'Understand where the value creation happens and be as close to it as possible. Understand your business.' That commercial curiosity has always stayed with me. It has stood me in good stead, kept me engaged and helped me find impact, meaning, and alignment throughout my career.”On this episode of the Insurance Coffee House Podcast, Warrick delves in to his career journey and what he's learned along his professional journey. Through retail and recruitment industry, FMCG manufacturing and information services, Warrick shares his experiences of M&A, business divestures and balancing his commercial and HR hats. He discusses his role of Chief People Officer and Fidelis Insurance Group's novel operating model. “The hypothesis was that businesses should lend themselves to their core competencies. If that core competency is underwriting, then it should focus on underwriting and ensuring a relentless pursuit of execution and excellence.Conversely, the core competence in terms of capital management, balance sheet management, capital allocation, reserving, would also be best served if there was the same level of excellent focus and time and attention. Decisions can then be made with the clearest of intention, and there's no potential contradiction or conflict in terms of what you do from a capital management or from an underwriting point of view, because the two businesses are managed separately. So that's the hypothesis. We are in a long-term relationship with The Fidelis Partnership. They are focusing on what they do best, and we are focusing on what we do best.”With its growing presence in London, Dublin and Bermuda, Warrick discusses the culture at the business and whether bifurcation is a true USP to attracting top insurance talent. “Culture is dynamic. It's ever changing. You can never put a pin in it and say, “We're done, victory is declared!” It is a constant evolution. We also see that in terms of our demographic, our employee base and what they're looking for from an employer and the working experience. We've been able to assemble, very capable, experienced professionals from within the insurance market who have worked for much larger, more established organizationThis model represents something novel, unique and an opportunity for them to become part of something interesting. Of course there is a lot of uncertainty with a scale operation, but we have a deep heritage. We have some fantastic experience. We're a building brand, and it's enough to attract people who are well regarded.”Warrick emphasises what he looks for in insurance leaders coming for interview. “It's just as much a conversation on how that technical capability, experiences and skills are translated into value added. Don't spend your time talking about your accomplishments. We're going to take those as read.”As closing advice, Warrick says, “Understand your business. Be as close to the value-add inflection point as possible because you will feel relevant, get immediate feedback, and will be constantly evolving with the needs of the organization.”Connect with Warrick Beaver on LinkedIn or find out more about Fidelis Insurance Group The Insurance Coffee House Podcast is brought to...

Todays' Episode is a fast-moving, high-intensity blast from start to finish. That's mostly because of the people I'm talking to, but also due to the circumstances under which we are doing the talking. First the people. Richard Brindle is well known to anyone in our business as one of the most dynamic underwriters in the market. And anyone following the Fidelis story will know that now the business has split into the Fidelis Partnership and the Fidelis Insurance Group, Richard has freed up time to be even more dynamic. It's perhaps understandable that Richard Coulson, The Fidelis Partnership's CEO of Insurance & Deputy Group Chief Underwriting Officer, doesn't yet have the same public profile as his namesake, but on this performance it won't take long for that to start building. Secondly the venue was Monaco at the Monte Carlo RendezVous. The RendezVous always heightens the intensity of any interaction. People come there ready to communicate against the clock and that cut-to-the-chase feel very much comes through in this encounter. As a result this podcast covers everything it should – the state of global markets and where Fidelis is positioning itself to make the most of the opportunities those markets are throwing up, the Fidelis Partnership's entrance to Lloyd's and the two Richard's views on all the major issues of the day. Listening back this is a really enjoyable Episode, packed with singular, original and sometimes surprising insights. NOTES The Fidelis Partnership wanted to add the following points to our discussion about Intellectual Property (IP) insurance: Like others Fidelis exited the IP market earlier this year; Arguably IP is a great example of the bravery of innovation with measured downside and then pulling back quickly as soon as the warning alarms sounded; As a relatively small and well-managed book, there was very little impact on their overall exceptional long-term bespoke underwriting performance. What is the SSPX?The main goal of the Society of Saint Pius X is to preserve the Catholic Faith in its fullness and purity, to teach its truths, and to diffuse its virtues, especially through the Roman Catholic priesthood.Authentic spiritual life, the sacraments, and the traditional liturgy are its primary means of bringing this life of grace to souls.Although the traditional Latin Mass is the most visible and public expression of the work of the Society, we are committed to defending Catholic Tradition in its entirety: all of Catholic doctrine and morals as the Church has always defended them. What people need is the Catholic Faith, without compromise, with all the truth and beauty which accompanies it.https://sspx.org
Father Hudgins' homily: St Fidelis and Remembrance of God
Full Text of ReadingsWednesday of the Fourth Week of Easter Lectionary: 281The Saint of the day is Saint Fidelis of SigmaringenSaint Fidelis of Sigmaringen's Story If a poor man needed some clothing, Fidelis would often give the man the clothes right off his back. He was appointed head of a group of Capuchins sent to preach against the Calvinists and Zwinglians in Switzerland.
