The Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs traveled to Stockdale on March 21 to face the Stockdale Lady Brahmas in District play. Both teams entered the game with 0-2 records in the District. U.S. Representative and Senator from Oklahoma from 1987, James Mountain Inhofe was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on November 17, 1934. He grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he attended public schools and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Tulsa. He served in the U.S. Army and worked in aviation, real estate, and insurance for three decades. The Congressional App Challenge is now open for students in Virginia's First District, which includes Henrico's western half. The nationwide competition allows middle and high school students to create and exhibit their software applications for mobile, tablet or desktop devices. The competition is open to students who are in middle or high school in public, private, charter, and home schools at the time of their applications. One year ago, graduate student-workers at Johns Hopkins University overwhelmingly voted to unionize under the banner of Teachers and Researchers United (TRU-UE), which is affiliated with United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers. While workers had much to celebrate with their historic union election victory, bargaining a first contract with the university administration has been another story. On February 20, fed up with what workers say have been disrespectful and insufficient offers from the university administration, TRU-UE members held practice pickets on campus to show the administration what's in store if more progress is not made at the bargaining table soon. Qualification for candidates ended recently, with no new sign-ups on the final day. Canton Mayor Bill Grant is being challenged by Andy Tubbs for re-election. Various City Council seats have been contested or remained uncontested. Notably, in the Canton Ward 2 special election, three candidates are competing: Samantha Baker, Bryan Roach, and Luke Smith. In Woodstock, several council members, including David Potts, Tracy Collins, and Rob Usher, are seeking re-election unopposed. In Waleska, Mayor Mary Helen Lamb qualified as the sole mayoral candidate, and new members are set to join the city council. Municipal elections are scheduled for November 7th. ....……… Read more on this story at tribuneledgernews.com STORY 2: heat The Georgia Department for Public Health advises people, especially seniors, to minimize exposure to heat and sun, as temperatures are expected to be in the upper 90s statewide. The heat index might surpass 100 due to high humidity. Cherokee County anticipates highs of 93 to 96 degrees through the week. A heat advisory was in effect for parts of west and central Georgia. MUST Ministries has opened a cooling center in Marietta to offer relief, operating from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. when temperatures hit 90 or higher. The health department suggests wearing light clothing, staying in air-conditioned places, avoiding hot meals, and limiting outdoor activities. Story 3: carr Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr is urging a federal judge to reconsider a preliminary injunction that blocked a law limiting medical care for transgender minors. Carr's motion, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, references a recent U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that lifted a similar preliminary injunction in Alabama. The injunction in question was issued in response to a challenge against Senate Bill 140, which prohibits hormone replacement therapy for gender dysphoria treatment in adolescents. The judge ruled that the law violates transgender minors' rights under the 14th Amendment. The debate surrounds protecting minors from potentially irreversible decisions versus mental health risks and suicide rates among transgender teens. This will raise the fee from $4 to $5 per month for each equivalent residential unit. The change is aimed at generating revenue for annual replacements of stormwater infrastructure. The fee is included in property owners' tax bills. Additionally, the council unanimously voted to submit the city's comprehensive plan to the Atlanta Regional Commission and the Department of Community Affairs for review. There's a proposal to change the development character area map, allowing commercial use with residential areas. The council also approved adjustments to park rental fees and a liquor store application. A park was named in honor of a former council member, Karen Johnson Barnett, who passed away in 2021. Story 5: pta Cherokee County School District (CCSD) educators and volunteers have received recognition from the PTA with state and regional awards. Among the winners, Liberty Elementary School Nurse Amanda Fox was honored as an Outstanding School Nurse at the District 13 PTA level, then proceeded to win the statewide award from the Georgia PTA. Additionally, CCSD teachers, principals, and school PTAs received various awards for their exceptional contributions, professionalism, partnerships, and community engagement. Superintendent Brian Hightower expressed his gratitude for the PTA's continuous support and the dedication of the honorees. The winners will be recognized by the Cherokee County School Board in September. Story 6: bookmark Violet Paul, an eighth-grade student from Cherokee County's E.T. Booth Middle School, has won the top prize of $100 in the 2023 Georgia Farm Bureau Middle School Bookmark Contest. Her entry was recognized as the best in GFB's First District, encompassing 15 counties in northwest Georgia. The contest, aimed at encouraging students to explore agriculture and create artwork inspired by their learning, is sponsored by Georgia Farm Bureau. Violet's artwork and her victory were celebrated on the GFB Facebook page, where the state winner was determined by the most likes, and the runner-up by the second-highest votes. Story 8: fleeing The Woodstock Police Department will honor four citizens and an off-duty Cobb County officer during the upcoming Woodstock City Council meeting for their assistance in apprehending a fleeing suspect. On August 3rd, a Woodstock officer pursued a speeding vehicle that made unsafe lane changes on I-575. Several citizens, including Jaxson Rupert and Justin Shubert, helped locate the suspect within an apartment complex. Construction inspector James Stokes assisted in the pursuit by providing transportation and support. Off-duty Cobb County Police Department Lt. Lee Turman aided the Woodstock officer and citizen Stokes. Lastly, Henry Higgins helped stop the suspect, Bailey Avey, from fleeing before officers arrived. Their courageous and determined actions ensured the suspect's swift apprehension, earning them recognition from the Woodstock Police Chief Robert Jones during the city council meeting. Story 9: apartments Novare Group, Batson-Cook Development Co., and PointOne Holdings are collaborating on a new apartment complex project in southwest Cherokee County near Acworth. Novare Group's President and CEO, Jim Borders, expressed pride in the successful collaboration and commitment to creating a development that aligns with the area's vision and exceeds residents' expectations. Congressman Brad Finstad was elected to Congress in a special election on August 9, 2022, and was sworn in three days later with his family by his side as he took the Oath of Office to proudly represent Minnesota's First District. Brad is a fourth-generation farmer and resident of the New Ulm area. He and his wife, Jackie, met on the school bus in second grade and they are now the proud parents of seven children. In May 2011, Irma drove her Ford Focus to Goose Island to pick up her boyfriend from a late-night performance at a nightclub and got lost on a dead-end street bisected by the Chicago River. Due to the City of Chicago's failure to maintain barriers or provide warnings to motorists --despite knowledge of a similar incident that occurred more than a decade earlier -- Irma unknowingly drove her car over the curb and into the water. After an extensive search, her body was discovered nine days later in her vehicle. At trial, the defense attempted to blame Irma for her own wrongful death, insinuating she was drunk, driving impaired, and not paying attention. In May 2016, a Cook County, Illinois jury awarded Irma's family $13,890,000 in damages, delivering the #6 verdict in Illinois in 2016. View/Download Trial Documents Guest Bios: Katrina M. Taraska Originally from the East Coast, Katrina M. Taraska grew up in a family of seven in Peoria, Illinois. Her mother was a language teacher proficient in French, Italian and Spanish who devoted her time to the enrichment of the lives of her students while teaching at area schools. Her father, a dedicated pathologist, was one of the four original founders of the Midwest affiliate of St. Jude Children's Hospital, which provides care to children with childhood diseases. Unique to Ms. Taraska's chosen career in personal injury law, she was the victim of a propane gas explosion, in which a commercial building collapsed on her, her mother, her brother, and a close family friend. The explosion left Taraska with extensive second and third-degree burns early in her life. She was hospitalized for 3 months, during which she underwent skin grafting of her arms, legs, hands, and chest. Incredibly, a year prior to the explosion, Ms. Taraska's father and a reconstructive surgeon opened the only downstate burn unit in Peoria where she was successfully treated despite the severity of her burns. It is this life-changing event that has played a significant role in Ms. Taraska's career of representing the injured. After graduating from law school Ms. Taraska has successfully represented clients and their families in complex litigation. In 1995, Katrina Taraska began practicing law in downstate Illinois where she grew up. In 2000 she became a partner with a Peoria law firm where she enjoyed the privilege of advocating for her clients in their respective claims for personal injuries, medical negligence, worker's compensation, and employment discrimination. She frequently appeared before the Circuit Court of Peoria County, Illinois, the Illinois Department of Human Rights, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Social Security Administration, the Department of Employment Security, and in the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois. Preiser grew up in the suburbs of Oak Park and River Forest. Joseph's father, a personal injury attorney, unintentionally set Joseph on a path toward a career in law. From an early age, often unbeknownst to his father, Joseph read his father's books authored by prominent trial attorneys including, Gerry Spence, Robert Shapiro, Irving Younger, and Vincent Bugliosi, sparking Joseph's interest in law and justice. After graduating from Oak Park-River Forest High School, Joseph attended the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. While pursuing his undergraduate degree, Joseph began to hone his skills as a trial lawyer by participating on the University of Illinois' Mock Trial team. During his senior year, Joseph's team won the Regional Mock Trial Championship and competed in the Mock Trial National Championship in Des Moines, Iowa. After working her way up to become a CFO, Amy has since retooled her professional experience to provide vital campaign services to other progressive candidates. Turner went on to serve as the Chair of Party Engagement for the Ohio Democratic Party, leading the effort to build a more robust & inclusive organizing infrastructure & support for local Democratic candidates across the State. Turner took her record of accomplishment & commitment to justice nationwide when she became a national surrogate for Bernie Sanders' 2016 Presidential campaign & National Co-Chair for Bernie 2020. In those roles, she traveled coast to coast building support for progressive values such as a $15 living wage, free education from kindergarten through college & health care as a human right in the form of Medicare for All.
