Break 1: Kia Mall of Georgia STORY 1: Apartment fire displaces 19 residents in Buford Tuesday afternoon, chaos broke out at the Plantation Ridge Apartments in Buford when a fire erupted on a second-story balcony. It was 3:44 p.m. when 911 calls started pouring in—residents scrambling to evacuate as flames climbed toward the second floor. By the time firefighters arrived, the back of the three-story building was ablaze. Crews worked fast, deploying hose lines to knock down the fire while police helped evacuate everyone inside. Six units were damaged—fire, water, the works—but thankfully, no one was hurt. The fire displaced 19 people—11 adults, eight kids. The Red Cross and apartment management are stepping in to help. Investigators traced the fire to a second-story balcony and ruled it accidental. STORY 2: Philadelphia Winn Chapter DAR Honors Veterans on National Wreaths Across America Day On Dec. 13, the Philadelphia Winn Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) held two heartfelt ceremonies to honor veterans resting at Gwinnett Memorial Park and East Shadowlawn Memorial Gardens. It was all part of Wreaths Across America, a nationwide effort to remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and teach future generations about the cost of freedom. Volunteers placed fresh balsam wreaths—handcrafted in Maine, red bows and all—on veterans’ graves. The ceremonies featured local JROTC cadets, SAR Color Guard, and more. Through Dec. 31, wreath sponsorships are buy-one-get-one-free for next year’s event. STORY 3: HOLIDAY TRAFFIC: Year-end travel expected to set new record More than 122 million Americans—including 3.8 million Georgians—are gearing up to hit the road, skies, or rails this holiday season, according to AAA. That’s a record-breaking number, up 2.2% from last year. “People are ready to travel,” said Debbie Haas, AAA’s VP of travel. “Roads will be packed, airports busy—plan ahead, leave early, and maybe consider travel insurance if you’re flying in winter weather.” Of the 122 million, most (89%) will drive, with 109.5 million taking road trips. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets 1- DTL HOLIDAY STORY 4: Fani Willis testifies to Georgia Senate committee After over a year of dodging Republican efforts to drag her before the Georgia Senate, Fani Willis finally showed up at the Capitol on Wednesday—and it was a spectacle. For three hours, the Fulton County district attorney sparred with a special committee she called a “political farce.” The committee, created by Senate Republicans, has been gunning for Willis ever since she indicted Donald Trump and 18 others over the 2020 election. The hearing? A mix of accusations and insults. Sen. Greg Dolezal, filling in as chair, grilled Willis on everything from her office’s spending to her use of a media tracking service. Willis fired back, calling some questions “ignorant”. Both sides threw punches. Dolezal pointed to Willis’ political donations and her staff’s ties to Democratic campaigns. Willis countered with social media posts showing Dolezal and others using the investigation for their own political gain. The hearing ended with no clear resolution—just more finger-pointing. STORY 5: UPDATE: 19-year-old shot by Gwinnett police after charging officers with a knife Gwinnett County police are looking into a Thursday afternoon shooting involving one of their own. It started around 1:40 p.m. when the State Mobile Crisis Team called officers to help with a mental health situation on Lockridge Drive, near Peachtree Corners. When officers arrived, they spoke with the crisis team and a 19-year-old outside the home. Clinicians decided the teen needed to go to the hospital for evaluation. But things escalated fast. “The subject went back inside, came out with a knife, and charged at the officer,” said Cpl. Angela Carter. “Despite commands to stop, the officer fired, striking the individual.” Paramedics on scene treated the teen, who was taken to the hospital and is alive, though their condition is unclear. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now handling the case, as is standard in officer-involved shootings. Here is Shane Delancey the Director of the Christmas Tradition at the Strand Theatre -Interview with Shane Delancey- Break 3: THE STRAND STORY 6: UGA researchers find more evidence that mining would harm Okefenokee New research has added weight to what environmentalists have been saying for years: mining near the Okefenokee Swamp is a terrible idea. Scientists at UGA found that water in the swamp and the aquifer beneath it share the same “fingerprint,” meaning they’re connected. Pull water from the aquifer? You’re pulling it from the swamp too. For years, it was assumed a thick clay layer separated the two, but this study flips that on its head. Rainfall raises the swamp’s water level—and, a month later, the aquifer’s. Activists are calling the findings a “game changer.” STORY 7: Gwinnett Native Todd Welborn Named Mountain View Head Football Coach Mountain View has tapped Todd Welborn as its new head football coach for the 2026 season, and honestly, it feels like a homegrown story coming full circle. Welborn, a former Collins Hill offensive lineman and a 26-year coaching veteran, has spent most of his career in Gwinnett County. For the past four years, he’s been a key part of Mountain View’s program, serving as defensive coordinator and handling a lot of behind-the-scenes work. Now, he’s stepping into the top spot, replacing John Poitevint, who led the Bears to three playoff runs from 2020 to 2025. Austell Mayor Ollie Clemons, Mableton Mayor Michael Owens, and Powder Springs Mayor Al Thurman gathered at the Riverside EpiCenter to talk about 2025 wins and what’s next for 2026 during the State of South Cobb event. Clemons? He’s proud of Austell’s bold move to raise the millage rate for the first time in decades. “It’s about reinvesting in our community,” he said, pointing to plans for downtown revitalization and hiring a city manager—finally. Owens celebrated Mableton’s new departments and leadership team, calling 2025 a year of “building the foundation.” Next year? It’s all about community engagement and growth. Thurman highlighted Powder Springs’ shiny new city hall and parking garage, plus job-creating developments. His focus for 2026? Sustainable growth and leaving a legacy of leadership. STORY 2: Jaha Howard wins runoff for Georgia Senate District 35 Jaha Howard pulled off a narrow win Tuesday night, defeating fellow Democrat Roger Bruce in the runoff for state Senate District 35. Unofficial results show Howard, a dentist and former Cobb school board member, edging out Bruce with 51.9% of the vote to Bruce’s 48.1%. The seat, which covers parts of Cobb and Fulton counties, was left open when Jason Esteves stepped down to run for governor. Howard credited his win to personal outreach—hundreds of phone calls, he said, to build trust. “People want to feel heard,” he said. Bruce’s campaign struggled with name recognition, especially in Cobb. STORY 3: Cobb County staff trade desk work for Christmas carols  Glover Park got a dose of holiday magic Tuesday, thanks to Cobb County’s newest choir, “Cobb County Sonic Sound” (or, as they like to call themselves, “CoCo SoSo”). Led by Dr. Jatunn Gibson, head of the county’s Public Services Agency, the group—decked out in festive sweaters and holiday flair—belted out classics like “Joy to the World” and “White Christmas.” Oh, and they’ve got their own band too, all county employees. This week, he was named the 2025 Mableton Citizen of the Year at the South Cobb Area Council meeting, and the surprise left him, well, a little speechless. “It just warms my heart,” Gaines said. “To know the work I’ve done is appreciated like this—it’s humbling.” Gaines, who’s the director of planning at Croy Engineering and chairs the Mableton Development Authority Board, was honored by Mayor Michael Owens. “Jason’s been a force,” Owens said. “His expertise and passion have shaped this community at such a critical time.” The guy’s résumé? Stacked. Leadership programs, board memberships—he’s everywhere. STORY 5: Anderson steps down as Walker football coach TJ Anderson pulled off something close to miraculous in 2025. With just 23 players—yes, 23—he guided Walker through a grueling 10-game season. The Wolverines finished 2-8, but they still earned a spot in the Class A-AAA Private state playoffs. Unfortunately, injuries piled up, and the team had to decline the bid. “We had to make the best decision for our kids,” Anderson said, reflecting on the tough call. But that season? It was his last. Anderson announced on X that he’s stepping down as Walker’s head coach after three years. “It’s been a journey,” he wrote, thanking the community and his family. BRAVES: Ha-Seong Kim is staying put in Atlanta—at least for another year. The 30-year-old shortstop signed a one-year, $20 million deal with the Braves on Monday, locking him in as the team’s starter for 2026. Not bad, considering he turned down a $16 million option just last month and walked away with an extra $4 million. Kim joined the Braves late last season, claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay on Sept. 1. He made an immediate impact, hitting .309 with a .372 OBP, three homers, and 12 RBIs in his first 19 games. Sure, he cooled off at the end—1-for-19 in the last five games—but the Braves clearly see his potential. Kim’s journey hasn’t been without bumps. Injuries sidelined him for much of 2025 with the Rays, where he hit just .214 in 24 games. But let’s not forget—this guy won a Gold Glove with the Padres in 2023 and has 84 career stolen bases. The Braves are betting on a bounce-back. And if Kim can channel his San Diego form, he could be a 3-4 WAR player. High hopes, but hey, the talent’s there. And who better to kick things off than Super Bowl champ-turned-literacy advocate Malcolm Mitchell? On Monday, Mitchell read to 400 fourth graders at the College Football Hall of Fame, sharing his book The Magician’s Hat—and a little inspiration. He’s on a mission, attending 75 reading events a year. Mitchell’s foundation, Share the Magic, has been changing lives since 2016. The program, backed by the Georgia Council on Literacy, comes as state test scores show room for improvement—only 43% of fifth graders scored proficient in English last year. Lawmakers are investing millions in teacher training and student screenings, hoping to turn things around. Communities like Dalton and Augusta are already using past grants to teach parents about literacy. Applications for this year’s grants are open now—details on the Georgia Reads website. STORY 2: Will Cagle wins vacant Cherokee County commissioner seat   Republican Will Cagle is poised to take the Cherokee County District 1 Commissioner seat, with unofficial results showing a decisive win. By 9:37 p.m. Tuesday, Cagle had secured 75.19% of the vote—8,887 ballots—while Democrat Charles Ravenscraft trailed with 24.81% (2,932 votes). Cagle thanked voters for their turnout, even during Fall Break. Ravenscraft, gracious in defeat, congratulated Cagle. Cagle’s win follows a runoff after no candidate cleared 50% in August. Results await certification. STORY 3: Dickerson wins runoff for open Georgia Senate seat Republican Jason Dickerson is set to become Georgia’s next state senator for District 21, according to unofficial results. By 9:55 p.m. Tuesday, Dickerson, an investment manager from Canton, had secured 61.47% of the vote (19,061 ballots), defeating Democrat Debra Shigley, an attorney from Milton, who garnered 11,950 votes. At his Canton watch party, Dickerson shared that representatives of Donald Trump had called to congratulate him. Shigley, conceding Tuesday night, and thanked her supporters. Break: Ingles Markets 5 STORY 4: Three sentenced for trafficking meth in Cherokee County  Three people are heading to prison after pleading guilty to meth trafficking and other charges, the Cherokee County DA’s office announced. Justin Carl Benson, 29, of Canton, got 10 years without parole for meth possession with intent to distribute and giving false info to police. Heather Sparrow Bird, 49, also of Canton, was sentenced to 15 years (parole possible) for trafficking meth, plus charges involving oxycodone, clonazepam, alprazolam, and marijuana. Terry Raymond Spriggs, 53, received 20 years without parole for meth trafficking and theft charges. The case began in July 2023 with a 911 call about suspicious activity on Lower Scott Mill Road. Deputies found a stolen truck, drugs scattered throughout a home, and even a stolen Harley in the yard. STORY 5: Canton looks to bond to fund fire station renovations  Canton’s Fire Station 16 is finally getting the overhaul it desperately needs. On Sept. 18, the city council gave the green light to move forward with a revenue bond to fund the $8 million renovation. Here’s the deal: firefighters have been living in a mobile unit inside one of the bays since 2017—yes, 2017—because the building’s in such rough shape. The new plan? Permanent housing for firefighters, more space for services, and a design that honors the station’s century-old legacy. The bond, expected to close in November, will cover $5.8 million, with impact fees paying off the debt. Construction starts in 2026. Finally. The City Council approved the referendum on Aug. 25, following a state law (House Bill 807) signed by Gov. Brian Kemp in May. If passed, surviving spouses wouldn’t need to meet the five-year residency rule to qualify. Also on the Nov. 4 ballot: the mayor’s seat and three city council positions. Early voting runs Oct. 14-31. Pastor Gary Lamb announced the church’s new (temporary) home will be RockSolid Brewing in downtown Ball Ground. Starting Oct. 5, Sunday services will run from 10 a.m. to noon in the brewery’s space. The church, known for its “not your typical church” vibe, is leaving Canton Village, which is set for demolition. Lamb called Ball Ground a “vibrant, growing town” and said the brewery’s community-focused mission aligns perfectly with Action Church’s. Break: HISTORY CHEROKEE STORY 4: Cagle and Ravenscraft head to runoff for Cherokee commissioner The race for Cherokee County’s District 1 commissioner seat is down to two: Republican Will Cagle and Democrat Charles Ravenscraft. With no candidate hitting the 50% mark in Tuesday’s election, a runoff is set for Sept. 23. Cagle led with 28.35% (2,574 votes), followed by Ravenscraft at 21.89% (1,987 votes). Trailing were Republicans Rick Whiteside, Justin Page, Jonathan Browning, and Robert Ridley. Cagle thanked his fellow Republicans for “strong, honorable campaigns” and urged conservatives to show up again. Ravenscraft, meanwhile, said he’s “honored” by the support and ready to serve. Early voting starts Sept. 13. STORY 5: Race for open Georgia Senate seat headed to runoff The Georgia Senate District 21 race just got real. Out of seven candidates, it’s now down to two: Democrat Debra Shigley and Republican Jason Dickerson. Shigley led the pack with 39.51% of the vote (8,438 votes), while Dickerson barely edged out former Cherokee Commissioner Steve West for the second spot—just 65 votes separated them. Dickerson finished with 17.36% (3,707 votes), and West trailed at 17.05% (3,642 votes). Runoff’s set for Sept. 23. I earned my B.S. in chemistry from Xavier University of Louisiana, master's from Keller Graduate School in information systems, and an M.Ed. and Ed.S. in instructional technology from Kennesaw State University. I am a firm believer in leveraging my technology expertise to support my fellow peers while developing my students' skills. I have facilitated various professional development initiatives over the past decade. I have also presented at multiple levels, including both instructional technology and educational research conferences, at the local, state, national, and international levels.   During my tenure in my local school district, I was named Star Teacher in 2019, Stephenson High School's Teacher of the Year 2023- 2024, and the DeKalb County School District's High School Teacher of the Year 2023-2024. I have been granted the Explore Learning Leadership Award for Implementation in 2015 and 2016. I also earned the KSU's Bagwell Scholar Award in Spring 2022 while earning my specialist degree. I was also honored in the Georgia Senate with a Resolution for Stephenson's Teacher of the Year in 2024. I am currently a doctoral candidate at Kennesaw State University, maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout my studies.   In my free time, I enjoy reading, listening to an eclectic array of music, spending time with my family and friends, and traveling whenever possible.   I was affected by Hurricane Katrina and had to take my last semester classes at Spelman College and Georgia State University. I must give credit where it's due. The property at 7658 Union Hill Road, near Avery Elementary, may now be available at a reduced price. County leaders, including Commissioners Steve West and Richard Weatherby, are exploring purchasing the land for a future park, though development would take years. The site was rezoned in March for office institutional use, despite mixed public feedback and a petition with over 950 signatures opposing the project. STORY 2: Cherokee Authorities Looking for 13-Year-Old Last Seen Monday The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office is seeking help to locate 13-year-old Jamel Nalls, reported missing on April 21 near Bells Ferry Road by the Cobb County line. Jamel, described as Black with red hair, brown eyes, 5’02”, and 130 pounds, was last seen wearing a white shirt, black jeans, white shoes, and carrying a grey and blue backpack while riding a black bicycle with green lettering. He may be heading to the Austell area. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office at 770-928-0239 or call 911. STORY 3: Cherokee County Firefighters and First Responders Earn Awards Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services honored its personnel with awards recognizing exceptional achievements from April 14-16. The EMS Lifesaver Award went to 24 individuals for life-saving actions during emergencies, while the Firefighter Lifesaver Award was given to five firefighters for heroic efforts. Officer Jesse Hamilton received the Civilian Lifesaver Award. The Unit Citation recognized teams for outstanding performance during major incidents, and the Meritorious Service Award was presented to Nichole Drgan for sustained excellence. STORY 5: Fox Theatre Offers High School Students A Chance To Learn About Working In The Performing Arts The Fox Theatre’s Fox Gives program is accepting applications for its 2025-2026 All-Access Pass, an immersive initiative for high school students interested in performing arts careers. Open to Georgia public and Title I schools within 50 miles of the Fox, the program offers hands-on learning, mentorship, live performance access, and career workshops. Schools with active arts programs can apply by May 9, with up to 30 students from three schools selected. Break 3: MONSTER JAM STORY 6: Police: GSMST Student allegedly recorded girls in school bathroom at least 13 times A former Gwinnett School of Math Science and Technology student, Hongming Mo, 17, faces felony charges for allegedly recording female classmates in the bathroom at least 13 times since last October. Mo was arrested on Feb. 25 after being caught recording a student in a girls' restroom. GSMST Principal Logan Malm confirmed Mo is no longer a student at the school, and swift disciplinary and legal actions were taken. Released on a $5,000 bond, Mo is barred from returning to GSMST. The incident was reported by another student, highlighting the school’s “See Something, Say Something” safety culture. STORY 7: Lawrenceville annexation bill headed to governor's desk Lawrenceville is one step away from a May 2026 referendum on annexing 5.3 square miles, potentially adding 19,000 residents and becoming Gwinnett County's largest city. The Georgia Senate unanimously passed House Bill 739, awaiting Gov. Brian Kemp's signature. If approved, the annexation would balance the city's tax base, reducing tax-exempt properties from 40% to 21%. Residents in the annexed areas would see no net change in millage rates but would shift to city services. The expansion, effective January 2027, would require $9 million annually for additional services, offset by matching revenue.
