For the last five years, the Political Right has been debating over a program for regime change in America: should populism be used to construct a new elite class? Should a new administration retire all government employees? Can the bureaucratic state be maintained but filled with new conservative staff? In this podcast, Alex Denley and Dr. Andrew Willard Jones discuss subsidiarity as the solution to this debate, and how it provides a program for genuine regime change. Together, Tom and Andrew unpack how these historical lessons challenge contemporary notions of power, governance, and faith.Whether you're a student of history, a seeker of truth, or simply curious about the Church's role in defending human dignity, this conversation will leave you with a richer understanding of how faith and politics can—and should—interact.Tune in for a compelling exploration of the past that offers fresh perspectives on the present.
Are we headed to a grand and glorious technological future, bright with gizmos and gadgets and flying cars? In this talk, Andrew Willard Jones expects the opposite: "The Future is Always Worse Than You Think It Will Be." As he explains, there are two paths with the development on new technologies: one which leads to an extension of the humane world into greater areas, and another, the technocratic, which closes and mines the world from within. This talk was given at the 2024 New Polity Conference "Should We, Therefore, Destroy the Servers?" Registration is open now for New Polity's 2025 conference "Our Kind of People." The Church sees the world as God's good and harmonious Creation, a primordial peace. In his acclaimed book Before Church and State, Andrew Willard Jones revealed that society in the High Middle Ages was a striving toward liberation by grace, which led to subsidiarity. In The Church Against the State, he argues that this uniquely Christian political form is still with us, present in our love, our courage, and in all that is noble within us, brought to new life through the Church. In this podcast, Marc Barnes interviews Andrew Willard Jones on his new book The Church Against the State.
Everyone has a sense of what is just and unjust, but what is the source of justice? In this episode of "The Politics of Paganism," Alex Denley and Dr. Andrew Willard Jones discuss Plato's "Republic." Through a discussion of the luxurious city, the myth of the mixture of the elements, the Allegory of the Cave, and finally the Philosopher-King, Alex and Andrew show the tension in Plato between relative and absolute justice; between the shadows of justice in the city and true justice that the philosopher contemplates. If you want to read ahead, next up is Plato's "Republic."
As the liberal order continues to collapse, rival voices have gained popularity—groups that aren't content secularizing religion, but rejecting Christianity altogether. Old pagan arguments are resurrecting: the aesthetics of power, might-makes-right, vitalism and tyranny. Alex Denley and Dr. Andrew Willard Jones discuss their new series “The Politics of Paganism” and how Christianity can understand and defeat the pagan attacks against it.

America is sinking into pagan practices and beliefs. While Americans may not use the same language as the ancient pagans, John Daniel Davidson believes that the central pagan creed is present: there is no truth, everything is permitted. Liberalism had attempted to create neutral spaces, but as those spaces become more fought over, the only rationale can be one's own power. Dr. Andrew Willard Jones and John Daniel Davidson discuss the roots of a pagan worldview, the extent to which America is pagan, and how Christians should approach the pagan political order.
iberalism is failing. Instead of making us more free, we are becoming more isolated from what makes us most human: from community, family, and friendship. Debates between progressives and conservatives continue to no end, but things only seem to get worse. In this episode of Pints with Aquinas, Dr. Andrew Willard Jones presents a paradigm shift for politics. Against the story of secularism, where politics and religion are separate realms, Andrew argues that Christ came to save all that is human: politics, economics, business—all of it. Instead of fighting over a failing liberalism, Andrew shows us why (and how) we should redeem politics by building families and communities of Christian love. In this episode of political saints, Andrew Willard Jones, author of "Before Church and State", discusses the life of King St. Louis IX. Dr. Jones shows how Louis fulfilled his role as king within his role as laity. Instead of the modern way of viewing Church and State as in tension with one another, King Louis saw himself as a lay member of the Church sanctifying the temporal order.

Andrew Willard Jones, Director of the St. Paul Center and Faculty Fellow at Franciscan University of Steubenville talks to Fr. Mitch about the centrality of Christian history and how it relates to and directs secular history.
The liberal tradition frames the story of modernity as the gradual victory of freedom against state hegemony. Liberty, the consent of the people to be governed, and individual rights are the mainstay of western society. But are we really more free than before? What if freedom isn't what we think? Historian and theologian Andrew Willard Jones talks with Grant about the ways that liberalism contradicts the Christian idea of the human person, how liberalism ultimately tends towards tyranny, and what a post-liberal world might look like. What is the role of government if self-gift and peace are seen as the foundation of human society? How ought the Church and state relate to one another? Most importantly, how can we work here and now to build a just post-liberal society in a culture shaped profoundly by individualism?
In this final episode of the Politics of Tyranny, Andrew Willard Jones and Marc Barnes attempt to tie together the many techniques of tyrants into one, comprehensive package: war. All tyranny is the expansion of the state of war into places of peace for the sake of private gain.
Population control isn't just in the forced sterilizations and genocides of tyrannical regimes. It is wherever people subordinate the human good of procreation to the punishments and rewards of the regime. We're all eunuchs now, say Andrew Willard Jones and Marc Barnes.

It's easy to recognize a tyrant. It's hard to recognize a good rebellion. Still, rebellion is a moral obligation for Christians under tyrannies. Andrew Willard Jones and Marc Barnes discuss why, and how you can begin the hard work of rebellion, starting with martyrdom and ending in war.

It argues that while the spiritual and temporal powers existed, they were not parallel structures attempting to govern the same social space in a contest over sovereignty. Rather, the spiritual and the temporal powers were wrapped up together in a differentiated and sacramental world, and both included the other as aspects of their very identity. The realm was governed not by proto-absolutist institutions, but rather by networks of friends that cut across lay/clerical lines. Ultimately, the king's "fullness of power" and the papacy's "fullness of power" came together to govern a single social order. The prevailing narrative of human history, given to us as children and reinforced constantly through our culture, is the plot of progress. As the narrative goes, we progressed from tyranny to freedom, from superstition to science, from poverty to wealth, from darkness to enlightenment. This is modernity's origin myth. Out of it, a consensus has emerged: part of human progress is the overcoming of religion, in particular Christianity, and that the world itself is fundamentally secular. https://www.amazon.com/Two-Cities-History-Christian-Politics/dp/1645851222 (The Two Cities: A History of Christian Politics) In The Two Cities: A History of Christian Politics, Andrew Willard Jones rewrites the political history of the West with a new plot, a plot in which Christianity is true, in which human history is Church history. The Two Cities moves through the rise and fall of empires; cycles of corruption and reform; the rise and fall of Christendom; the emergence of new political forms, such as the modern state, and new political ideologies, such as liberalism and socialism; through the horrible destruction of modern warfare; and on to the plight of contemporary Christians. These movements of history are all considered in light of their orientation toward or away from God. The Two Cities advances a theory of Christian politics that is both an explanation of secular politics and a proposal for Christians seeking to navigate today's most urgent political questions.
