Today we've got another special episode! Don't worry, there will be another regular episode on Friday. In today's episode David tries to find out what happened to Android ROMming? There was a time when flashing the latest nightly on your phone had an entire community built around it, but those days disappeared.. rather suddenly. What happened? We investigate. ### Intro Hello everyone and welcome to the Manly Hanley Podcast. This is the Podcast with no limits on what we'll cover. I'm your host, Randy. Have a snack, sit back, and relax. This Episode was recorded on Sunday, November 13th, 2022 ___ ### Tools or Servers I Run to Avoid Big Tech Tracking and Selling my Data - A Pixel Smartphone running [GrapheneOS](https://grapheneos.org/). - Android and iOS track the hell out of you - out of the box. - Apple tracks you a bit less out of the box than Android does. - GrapheneOS allows you to avoid a lot of Google tracking on Google's own phones. - GrapheneOS is a custom ROM/OS that you can flash to most Google Pixel smartphones. It allows you to avoid using Google Play Services/Framework/Store. You can use multiple user profiles to (for example) setup your work apps where you might want to use Google services, and then perhaps a personal account where you block everything related to Google. It's brilliant. - I've not seen an easier-to-install Android ROM than GrapheneOS. Their installer works right in the web browser, and it's solid: Worked on the first try for me when plugging in my phone and following their guide! I was blown away; Flew right out of my chair. - There are some downsides that you might know about until you try it out, such as not being able to use Android Auto. If you want something to be highly-secure, you're going to have sacrifices. If someone tells you otherwise, they're lying. - [Wallabag](https://www.wallabag.it/en) - An Open Source "Read it Later". It extracts only the article's content and places it into a nice view. It even lets you highlight areas of the content that you're extracting and add notes! - They mention that they don't store data on US servers. They write: "Because **your data belongs to you**, we don't want to store them on US servers. That's why we only chose European partners, like [Online](https://www.online.net/fr) (french web hoster), [MailJet](https://www.mailjet.com/) (french emailing service) or [PayPlug](https://www.payplug.com/) (french payment solution)." - It's important to note that, this solution is still great in that you can host it on your own US server, since it's open source. I do what I want with my server. The coolest thing is that you can export your data from Wallabag and reimport it into your own instance. This would be great if you wanted to sign up for their service as a trial, end the trial, and move the data to your own server. Amazing!

This episode we chat with Jacob Cook who puts the Montreal in Montreal Sauce as he was actually in the city at the time of the recording. Jacob is the handsome brain behind arkOS and CitizenWeb Project. We talk the importance of open source, crowd funding and Big Brother’s sneaky mistress, Big Data. Jacob occasionally uses Tor so obviously he’s under surveillance by the NSA. Jacob suggests an open source real-time communications alternative Talky.io, which is based on the open WebRTC. Google says Hangouts will only support Chrome. Chris grumbles while Jacob warns it is only the beginning. He cites Google dropping the open XMMP protocol which has affected Chris in Canada land. Jacob shares a review on his new Jolla phone. The other alternatives are BlackPhone or the Android ROM Replicant. We discuss the evolution of developers from Nick Burns computer nerd to savvy designers & entrepreneurs building user friendly software and apps. Ease of use trumps privacy concerns every time. Thus, Jacob is working hard to make hosting your own websites, cloud and data very easy with arkOS. DRM does not move us forward. Jacob asks why wouldn’t we want the freedom to read an e-book, listen to a song or watch a film on any device? Open source collaboration means the creation of software we can all use regardless of our system. Jacob vows to never sell out arkOS as he never wants to take power from the users. Chris imagines Jacob starring in HBO’s Silicon Valley. Jacob has a great page called Free the Cloud and Chris asks how Jacob argues against the opposition. We all agree, every success is due to hard work. Kids, work hard and some day you can meet David Hasselhoff and have success like Angie Harmon. Paul and Jacob talk about Jono Bacon’s The Art of Community and the importance of building a community around an open source project. Advice from Jacob & Paul: Less is more, do one thing well and don’t insult people’s intelligence. Be at one with your time traveling hipster. Jacob & Chris talk about a recent survey of arkOS users and the idea of an arkOS data center for folks who have a poor internet speeds or are crippled by Comcast or another evil ISP. Jacob says arkOS will now have a SyncThing plugin as an alternative to OwnCloud. Jacob & Chris contemplate raising more money for arkOS with potato salad. We’ll return next week with Part 2 of our Jacob Cook episode, and Burt Reynolds… mustache? Support Montreal Sauce on Patreon
