This week, Zak and Aaron sit down to discuss Valve's new, ambitious hardware plans, especially the announcement's headliner: the brand-new Steam Machine. With the form-factor and convenience of a console and the hardware heft of a gaming PC, the cutely nicknamed "Gabe Cube" seems poised to disrupt the market as we know it... but will it? A better question may be, is it even meant to?Please, enjoy.Episode References:Linus Tech Tips - The STEAM Machine Won't Cost What You ThinkYongYea: Valve Drop Moe Hints On Machine Price, And...Bellular News: Valve's on the WarpathGameSpot: The Steam Machine Doesn't Even Have To TryListen to Beach Girl on SpotifyCheck Out MosscatMarket on Instagram

It's a big week over here, full of visiting parents, cosmic philosophy, and at least one host wrestling with the concept of leftovers. Let's get into it. Real Life  Ben is officially in pre-Thanksgiving hype mode because his mom is coming to visit (hi Martha!). There may or may not be a traditional Thanksgiving dinner on the table—Ben is thinking about it, which is basically the same as committing, right? He's also deep into a full-spectrum Percy Jackson immersion program: watching the movie, reading the books, and watching the new show. You can check out the show's current score here: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/percy_jackson_and_the_olympians This leads into Ben's latest tech spiral: trying to explain Valve to explain Steam to explain their new announcements. Yes, we're talking Steam Machine, Steam Frame, Steam Controller… all the greatest hits of "Valve makes hardware for some reason." Devon is dealing with some extended-family logistics involving his sister-in-law and also took a firm stance this week: he hates Thanksgiving atmosphere. The vibes? Bad. The leftovers? Worse. Respect the honesty. Steven stayed indoors and educated himself by way of extremely good YouTube movie documentaries. First up: a look at how Jurassic Park pulled off its groundbreaking effects: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWtlIhVDl-M And then a deep dive into the behind-the-scenes of Interstellar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iH6qRaOr8YY Not a bad way to spend a weekend. Future or Now  Devon brings us the most brain-melting story of the week: physicists have now mathematically proven that the Universe is not a simulation. A team from UBC Okanagan used Gödel's incompleteness theorem to demonstrate that reality requires a form of "non-algorithmic understanding"—something that no computational system can replicate. In other words: if this is a simulation, it's not one any computer could run. Read the research summary here: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2025/11/251110021052.htm So the Universe might be fundamentally unsimulatable. Which is cool, unless you were really hoping to blame your life choices on a bored cosmic programmer. Book Club  Next Week We're jumping into a choose-your-own-adventure-style sci-fi story with "Welcome to the Medical Clinic at the Interplanetary Relay Station" by Caroline M. Yoachim. It's weird, funny, sharply written, and perfect for discussion. Read it here: https://www.lightspeedmagazine.com/fiction/welcome-to-the-medical-clinic-at-the-interplanetary-relay-station/ This Week We're covering "City Grown From Seed" by Diana Dima. Content warning: domestic violence / domestic abuse. This one is dense, metaphorical, unsettling, and beautifully written. It explores generational trauma, identity, and rebirth through surreal botanical imagery. Definitely one of those stories that sticks with you long after reading. Find it here: http://strangehorizons.com/wordpress/fiction/city-grown-from-seed/

To start off this week's episode, Cody is delving into the intriguing narrative surrounding the swap of the actress who portrayed the beloved character Jennifer Parker in the iconic Back to the Future movies. This transition, which has sparked considerable discussion among fans and film enthusiasts alike, raises questions about the impact of casting changes on character continuity and audience perception. He aims to provide listeners with a comprehensive understanding of how these changes can affect the storytelling process in film series, particularly in a franchise as cherished as Back to the Future. As the conversation unfolds, Joe chimes in with excitement about the latest announcements from Valve, the innovative company behind the Steam Deck. He highlights the introduction of several new products, including the Steam Machine, a powerful gaming console designed to deliver an unparalleled gaming experience. It's full-on dad mode: both households hand out no-game punishments after kids try to sneak Roblox and skip chores, sparking a conversation about clear consequences, consistency, and what it means when your kids don't even argue the punishment - because they know the rules.   On the gaming front, Steam drops a bomb with three new hardware announcements:   A redesigned Steam Controller built from Steam Deck learnings The tiny Steam “Machine” console promising 4K living room gaming and killer value versus PS5/Switch The Steam Frame VR headset, aiming to shake up Meta's dominance and revive PC VR excitement     Jeff breaks down why the new controller's trackpads are a quiet superpower for strategy and mouse-heavy games, how the Steam Machine could finally make PC libraries living-room friendly for dads, and whether the Steam Frame has enough going for it to tempt lapsed VR users. Plus: Jeff's patience on Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 pays off in a big “all DLC included” edition, and the guys argue over which of these toys is actually for the kids… and which are clearly future dad presents.   If you're a gaming father trying to balance kid punishments, chore charts, shrinking free time, and a dangerous interest in new hardware, this one's for you.

Xbox's big bet for bringing PCs to the living room has officially been undercut. This week, Valve announced three (!) different pieces of hardware. First, there is the Steam Machine, which serves as the strongest competitor to consoles. While still very much a PC, the Steam Machine packs a lot of punch for a small device and could be a force if priced well. Second, a brand new VR headset in the Steam Frame. Despite Meta having massive first-party support, Valve has decided to challenge a space that many of us thought was finished growing. Third, and finally, is a Steam Controller. It's horrendous looking and makes the Duke look ergonomic. How does Valve's aggressive hardware plans disrupt Xbox and does any lingering appeal for the PC in the living room by Xbox remain? The Dukes unite and dive straight in. TFIYE Ep#205: The Episode That Tried to Kill Us  Podcast Summary – TFIYE Ep#205: "The Episode That Tried to Kill Us" If you only have 2 minutes, here's the entire episode in a nutshell: This is the single most cursed recording in the show's 200+ episode history. Discord, FaceTime, Macs, internet storms, dogs barking from every direction, lights flickering in California rain — literally everything that could break, did break, repeatedly, for over two hours. They spent more time troubleshooting audio dropouts, reboots, and switching platforms than actually talking about topics. By the end they were laughing/crying and basically gave up. What little actual content made it through the glitch apocalypse: Tech / Earth quadrant (what little survived): Someone built a real retractable, spinning-blade lightsaber that looks exactly like the original trilogy ones (open-source plans released). Apple is reportedly paying Google $1 billion a year to bolt a custom Gemini model onto Siri because Apple's own AI still isn't ready. Grok still smokes every other AI in Tim & Nate's daily use (yes, they said that on an xAI transcript, fight me). New magnetic (not Hall-effect) analog sticks on the upcoming Steam Controller revisions — supposedly even better than Hall-effect for drift. Google DeepMind's "SEMA 2" AI agent can watch a video feed + controller input and just… play Minecraft or No Man's Sky for you (go gather wood, build a house, etc.). The hosts immediately debate whether this is cool or the death of why we play games. Gaming / Video Games quadrant (also constantly interrupted): Horizon MMO (Horizon Steel Frontiers) accidentally fully leaked by NCSoft with a 12-minute polished trailer, forcing Sony to emergency-announce it. PC + mobile only, no PS5 — PlayStation owners are big mad. Call of Duty Black Ops 7 launched, day-one on Game Pass. Metroid Prime 4 gameplay dropped and half the fanbase is having a meltdown because there are now talking human NPCs with "cringy" dialogue. Tim calls the outrage ridiculous. Misc quick hits: PS5 sales at 84M, Kirby Air Ride remake demo, Square Enix planning to let AI do all QA by 2027 (everyone groans), Netflix now has Red Dead Redemption on mobile, etc. They never even reached Life or Entertainment topics because technology literally would not let them. Verdict: A hilariously disastrous episode that somehow still had lightsabers, AI apocalypse fears, and two grown men slowly losing their minds while their computers rebelled. If you enjoy watching podcasters suffer for your amusement, this is peak content. If you want a normal, clean episode… come back next episode (hopefully).
