Erin Bianco began skiing as a young kid in Ely, Minnesota, which is right on the Canadian border. Erin graduated with a sociology degree from Colby College in Maine. There, she was a leader on the Colby Mules cross country ski team under coach Tracey Cote. After college, Erin moved to Bozeman, Montana to train with the Bridger Ski Foundation (BSF) team under former U.S. Ski Team athlete and now coach, Andy Newell.  Erin Bianco finished her first World Cup in Oberhof, Germany with an impressive 35th in the classic sprint in 2024. It's almost time again for our end-of-year “Best of Season 2” (C2R2), on Channel 2, where Hugues and I will pick a combined 22 tracks from the 72 total which we featured across all of Season 2 in calendar 2022. Like last year, we'll each pick 2 tracks per episode (one per episode per host from each of the two hosts), as well as each picking one wildcard track to serve as our episode opener and closer tracks. To build a little excitement for that episode, as well as to give you a handy refresher of everything we did this year, we have put together a music-only recap of the entire season's output (links will be included to each of the “full episodes” with Hugues and I's dialog included). Of the 72, we already  know which 22 we're going to feature as “Best of”s, but as there'll be no spoilers on it, you'll have to just guess and wait and see and hope your personal favorites make our cut! ;-) You can also email us at nerd.noise.radio@gmail.com, or reach out to us on social media telling us what your top 11 would be (one track per host per episode, plus one wildcard), and if we get some submissions before recording time, we can mention them in the episode (or if we get enough of them, perhaps we can even make an Archive SUPER BONUS release out of them). How are the Olympics different from a World Cup? Generally speaking the waxing and racing is the same but some other aspects of the Olympic Games are very different from that of a World Cup event. Here is a discussion with Olympic athletes Caitlin Gregg, Andy Newell, Ida Sargent, and John Bauer to explore this topic hosted by Olympian Ian Harvey. Some of the topics discussed include the Olympic clothing issue from the USOC, eating in the cafeteria with all of the athletes from other countries and disciplines, Olympic village security, the opening and closing ceremonies, increased media interest, supporting the team, and if the Olympics are more or less competitive than a World Cup.

Torin Koos has represented the US 76 times in World Cup, World Championship, and Olympic competitions. His best individual international result was a 3rd place in Otepaeae, Estonia Classic sprint in 2007. Torin also finished 4th in the Dusseldorf, Germany World Cup team sprint with Andy Newell in 2008. Torin has 34 top 30 individual results in WC and World Championships. He has won the US National Championships 7 times and the Canadian Championships once (not counting sprint relays). Torin retired from full time training and racing after the 2014 season. This 4 time Olympian now lives in Lausanne, Switzerland and is 40 years old. Since 2016, Torin has overseen the media and communications for the International University Sports Federation. We discussed being an exchange student in Norway, some highlight races of his career, experiences from the Tour of China, and what it is like living in Lausanne. This was a fascinating interview with an old friend who gives a great interview.

Newell was in Utah assisting with the latest NEG camp and training with his old cohort when time permitted. No longer a staple of the national team, the 34-year-old Newell has partially turned over a new leaf. He's still training as a professional skier, but he's also the owner of a cross-country skiing business called Nordic team Solutions. Andy Newell leads the double pole train at the Lake Placid REG camp as part of his coaching related startup -Nordic Team Solutions. (Photo: Bryan Fish) Newell plans on racing several World Cups this season, and, if the gears are clicking, he hopes to qualify for the Seefeld, Austria World Championships. If that's not enough for this athlete in transition, Newell intends to expand his nascent business.  Newell's business model is part web-based platform and part ski-boots on the ground business specializing in technique, training, and nutrition. We're sure we missed something. But Newell covers it all in the podcast as he explains the niche he's trying to fill. Andy Newell (left) putting his Nordic Team Solutions to good use. BEND, Oregon — In this von Ballcap episode, we sit down with newly retired pro-skier Dakota Blackhorse-von Jess in his hometown of Bend. At 32, Dakota, or “Dak” as he's most often called, had been on the scene for over a decade. In that time, Blackhorse-von Jess won the support of his peers and fans as a skier's skier. The man is nothing but energy and intellect wound into a 5-foot-9-inch body that ultimately became a sprinting force. Andy Newell (near) and Dakota Blackhorse-von Jess during official training at the 2016 Ski Tour Canada in Gatineau, Quebec. (Photo: John Lazenby/Lazenbyphoto.com) His story resonates because Blackhorse-von Jess's story is the one you might want to tell the kids: stick to your goals, stay true to your values, and although you might achieve some of your dreams, some will be left unfulfilled. He raced at the 2015 World Championships in Falun, Sweden, he won skate-sprint national titles in 2013 and 2015, and a classic sprint title in 2015, too. Beyond the titles, he landed on the national sprint podium four times: placing second twice and third twice. However, an Olympic birth eluded him.   Dakota Blackhorse-von Jess in bib 1 (as the day's top qualifier) leads Bend Endurance Academy teammate Akeo Maifeld-Carucci (10) in the classic sprint at the 2016 Auburn Ski Club SuperTour in Truckee, California. We're talking about a person who gave up a full ride to the University of Washington, that brought with it a postgraduate job/internship at the “JPL”, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in favor of the ski-racing chase. Never look back and work for what you earn. Blackhorse-von Jess took a gap year, landed at Dartmouth where he skied for four years, and the rest is sifted through in the podcast. Not all of it, of course, but we sift through a whole bunch. Dakota Blackhorse-von Jess (30) off to a quick start in the quarterfinals at 2015 World Championships in Falun, Sweden. In this episode, we've got 34-year-old Andy Newell for you. He's a longtime staple of the U.S. Ski Team and another proud Vermonter. A few weeks ago we released our interview with climate-justice activist and Vermont resident Bill McKibben. After the interview, we received a few comments that spoke to the perceived large carbon footprint of World Cup skiing and possible changes that might be implemented to curb that environmental impact. With that in mind, we called up Andy Newell, who himself is a climate activist to address some of the questions. We spoke to Newell on Jan. 4 while he was in Seefeld, Austria, prepping for last weekend's World Cups. American Andy Newell (l) follows Norway's Johannes Høsflot Klæbo (r) and Finland's Iivo Niskanen (c) during their classic-sprint quarterfinal at the World Cup on Jan. 20 in Planica, Slovenia. Klæbo went on to win that heat, ahead of Niskanen in second and Newell in fourth. (Photo: Fischer/NordicFocus) Newell will soon be in PyeongChang, South Korea, for his fourth Olympics. After traveling the globe for 14 years as a member of the U.S. Ski Team, Newell has had time to think about energy use and change on the World Cup. Today’s conversation is with Erika and Annie, two of the best female skiers in the U.S. who are not currently on the U.S. Ski Team. They both ski for the Stratton Mountain School Elite Team and primarily compete on the U.S. Super Tour circuit. Both have started a few World Cup races but neither has scored World Cup points. They both attended and graduated from Dartmouth College and have super interesting lives outside of skiing. In our conversation we touched on a wide array of topics including the long odds of Olympic qualifying for U.S. women racing domestically, sexism and sexual harassment, eating disorders in skiing, Annie’s political leanings and many other topics. Now many console gamers may not know the name "LucasArts", although some of their titles have come to consoles. But LucasArts is much more known in the realm of computer gaming, as many of their titles have been released on a plethora of home computer platforms. From the Atari 8-bit family, to the Commodore 64, and later to the Atari ST, Amiga, FM Towns, IBM PC, and Macintosh computer lines, LucasArts made their fortune and glory, best known for their amazing graphic adventure games, which utilized their in-house engine known as SCUMM, as well as some top notch Star Wars games. LucasArts continued to publish and develop many games until 2012, when their parent company Lucasfilm was purchased by Disney. In 2013, LucasArts sadly let go of their internal development teams, and now exists solely as a license holder. However, in spite of this, many of their classic titles are available on services such as Steam and GOG.com, and I highly recommend checking them out. Now, for this episode, I will make mention that LucasArts used a special music engine for many of their games called iMUSE, which allowed for dynamic music; music tracks could seamlessly segue-way into one another to best fit the mood. Some of the tracks featured will demonstrate iMUSE in action. Additionally, some of these tracks were originally MIDI tracks, and I have selected to use recordings as they would sound running through a MIDI module known as the Roland MT-32. Make sure your DOS box has enough free RAM and you have your copy protection codes ready, because we're about to go on a time warp of amazing LucasArts music! =====Game - Composer - Title - Year - System==== 1) Maniac Mansion – Chris Grigg & David Lawrence - “Opening Titles (Commodore 64 version)” - October 5, 1987 (C64/Apple II), March 1988 (DOS), 1989 (Amiga/Atari ST/DOS v2) 2) Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders – Matthew Alan Kane & Chris Grigg - “Main Theme (FM Towns version)” - October 1988 (C64/DOS), 1989 (Amiga/Atari ST/DOS v2), 1990 (FM Towns) 3) Loom – Based on “Swan Lake” by Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky; arranged by George “The Fat Man” Sanger & Eric Hammond - “Opening Title” & “Guild of Glassmakers” (Roland MT-32 versions) - May 1990 (DOS/Mac OS/Amiga/Atari ST), 1991 (FM Towns), 1992 (DOS Talkie) 4) Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe – Michael Land - “Opening Titles” - August 1991 (DOS) 5) The Secret of Monkey Island – Michael Land, Barney Jones, Andy Newell, & Patrick Mundy - “Voodoo Lady” & “The SCUMM Bar” (CD Audio versions) – October 1990 (Amiga/DOS Floppy/Atari ST/Mac OS), 1992 (DOS CD/FM Towns/Sega CD/Amiga CDTV) 6) Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge – Clint Bajakian, Peter McConnell, & Michael Land - “Villa de la Booty” - December 1991 (DOS/Amiga/Mac OS/FM Towns) 7) Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis – Clint Bajakian, Peter McConnell, & Michael Land - “The Colonies of Atlantis” - June 1992 (DOS/Amiga/Mac OS/FM Towns) 8) Day of the Tentacle – Clint Bajakian, Peter McConnell, & Michael Land - “Hotel Interiors – Present” - June 25, 1993 (DOS/Mac OS) 9) Sam & Max Hit the Road – Clint Bajakian, Peter McConnell, & Michael Land - “A Pleasantly Understated Credits Sequence” & “King of the Creatures” - November 1993 (DOS/Mac OS) 10) Full Throttle – The Gone Jackals - “Legacy” - April 30, 1995 (DOS/Mac OS) 11) Star Wars: Dark Forces – Michael Land (original arrangements by John Williams - “The Secret Base” - February 28, 1995 (DOS/Mac OS) 12 ) The Dig – Michael Land – “The Ancient City” - November 30, 1995 (DOS/Mac OS) 13) The Curse of Monkey Island – Michael Land (vocals: Dominic Armato, Alan Young, Gregg Berger, Michael Sorich) – “A Pirate I Was Meant To Be” - October 31, 1997 (Windows) 14) Outlaws – Clint Bajakian - “The Ballad of Dr. Death” - March 1997 (Windows) 15) Grim Fandango – Peter McConnell - “Blue Casket Bop” & “Casino Calavera” - October 30, 1998 (Windows)
