Canadian Nationals 2024 Recap

Scoreography

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 22, 2024 31:23

We look at the somewhat underwhelming Canadian Nationals 2024 event, with surprise wins from Wesley Chiu and Kaiya Ruiter (except we predicted that one!), and flawed performances from gold-winning favorites Stellato-Dudek & Deschamps and Gilles & Poirier.   Canadian Nationals 2024 Commentary and Analysis The 2024 Canadian National Championships in Calgary saw some great performances, but unfortunately quite a few more disappointments. From the highs of Piper Gilles & Paul Poirier winning their third national title, to the struggles of many of the favorites in the men's and women's competitions, it was a challenging event that suffered (but sustained) through low attendance, no broadcast parter, and sub-zero temperatures. Ice Dance Competition As the marquee event of the National Championships, there was certainly pressure on the top teams to perform well — and Piper Gilles & Paul Poirier met that challenge to take their third national title. Their rhythm dance was a bit tighter than usual here, but their free dance continues to evolve and get stronger, which bodes well for them going into Four Continents and the World Championships. With the withdrawals of both Lawrence Fournier-Beaudry & Nikolaj Sorensen and Marjorie Lajiois & Zak Lagha, the door was open for two other fantastic Canadian dance teams — Marie-Jade Lauriault & Romain Le Gac and Alicia Fabbri & Paul Ayer — to take their respective and well-earned podium spots. Men's Competition Wesley Chiu threw down a great short program, which helped sustain him through a nervous free skate and bolster him to win his first national title. The silver and bronze medalists, Aleksa Rakic and Anthony Paradis, were both a bit surprising. Paradis, who is just 16 years old, showed remarkable artistic ability and professionalism through an equipment malfunction to land on the podium — which may have been the highlight of the whole comp. Coming into this event, three of the favorites were Conrad Orzel, Stephen Gogolev, and — returning to competition after a year — former Canadian National Champ, Roman Sadovsky. All three men had rough short programs that pushed them far down in the standings. Gogolev had to withdraw due to injury before the long, and neither Orzel nor Sadovsky were able to recover well enough to make the podium. Pairs Competition As expected, the remarkable team of Deanna Stellato-Dukek & Maxime Dechamps retained their national title — but it was not easy. Their short program had more errors than they typically see, still landing them in first but only barely. However, in their free program, they skated mostly clean and polished after messy side-by-side jumps to easily take the victory. In second, the on-the-rise team of Lia Pereira & Trennt Michaud had a solid short program to stay close. After a less stellar free skate, the team comfortably landed in the silver spot ahead of Kelly Ann Laurin & Loucas Éthier. Womens Competition This discipline saw the upset of the event with 17 year-old Kaiya Ruiter taking her first national title. While her short program was not what she'd hoped for, Kaiya came back with a strong free skate that put her well ahead of the expected winner, Madeline Schizas. Schizas had a solid short program, but struggled with her jumps and her energy on the ice during the free skate. The result was disappointing, but should keep Maddie's spot on the World team assured. In third, the young Hetty Shi skated well enough to take second in the free skate behind Kaiya and end up with her first senior national medal. Simone Plourde may be new to the professional scene, but how she races and handles everything running would make you think she has been in the sport for decades. Simone Plourde rose to recognition quickly in the NCAA while at the University of Utah. She finished 4th in the 3000m at NCAA Indoors, Pac-12 champion over 1500m, and earned All-American honors in the outdoor 5000m. It wasn't a perfect final year for the NCAA, but it was a perfect year for her to transition into the professional ranks, signing with Nike and UAC. Her summer consisted of a podium finish at the Canadian Championships and representing Team Canada in Budapest at the World Championships. Even after the long year, she lowered her 1500m PR to 4:06. Simone is well-spoken and articulate in how she talks about running, but not in the way you might think. She is a refreshing listen and we are sure her mindset and monologues will make you a fan of hers ahead of the Paris 2024. Topics of the Episode include: - Introduction to running and NCAA system/transfering Universities - Decision to leave NCAA early - Exceeding all expectations in 2023 - First World Championship experience - Nike/UAC - Fan Submitted - BanterBowl Disclaimer: Audio quality is lower than in previous episodes as Dave forgot his microphone cord and headphones but ordered a new set that will be ready for the next episode. Angela Maciocia is a soon-to-be 48-year-old masters runner from just outside of Montreal, QC. On May 27th she competed in the elite field of the Ottawa 10K, which also served as our Canadian Championships. Alongside Olympians and international level athletes, Angela was proud to be the oldest runner in the field and one of only eight women over the age of 40. Not only did she win her 45-49 age group and finish 6th master, she also ran a really smart race in the 30-degree heat to finish only ~30-seconds off her personal best in a time of 39:19.Last October during the Chicago Marathon, Angela ruptured her plantar fascia and was forced to drop out around the 29K mark. Devastated, she left the Windy City on crutches and in a boot just two weeks before her wedding to her best friend & coach, Bruce Raymer. She maintained her aerobic fitness in the pool and on the elliptical (a wedding present from Bruce!), but it took working with a psychologist to come to a place of forgiveness within herself for even toeing that start line in the first place. We had a fascinating discussion on the mental side of the sport, including self-compassion and self-love.Angela is a mom of two teenage boys, one of whom is on the autism spectrum. In early 2018, Newell finished seventh at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. She went on to win her first national title. In January 2021, she set a new indoor personal best of 4.70m at a meet in Texas. Outdoors, she recorded a season-high 4.60m in May. Episode 41 and Wendi and Dfernando's guest interview is Canadian multi-medalist Olympic ice dancer and linquist Paul Poirier.  Paul Poirier started skating at age five.  In standard Canadian tradition, he was put into ice hockey along with his brothers but instead of chasing the puck, he would spin on the face-off dots.  Once he was officially enrolled in figure skating, he loved being able to do what he wanted.  From ages 9 to 18 he split his time between ice dance and men’s singles; focusing more on ice dance because his career was more established in this form and he liked the artistic freedom it provided. In July 2011, Poirier teamed up with Piper Gilles. At their first national championships together in January 2012, they won the bronze medal in ice dance but were ineligible to compete internationally that season because Gilles had competed for the United States the year prior. They debuted as a couple on the ISU Grand Prix in the Fall of 2012 and competed at their first World Championships together in 2013.In May 2013, Poirier suffered a right ankle fracture dislocation and underwent surgery to insert plates and screws. They were able to compete at the 2014 Canadian Championships, but weren’t quite physically or technically ready to take their best shot at qualifying for Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games and missed the Olympic team by one spot. That fueled their fire for the next quadrennial. After winning silver at the 2014 Four Continents Championships, they had one of their strongest seasons in 2014-15, winning a pair of silver medals on the Grand Prix series and qualifying for the Grand Prix Final. They went on to post a career-best finish at the World Championships, placing sixth.Gaining a reputation as innovative skaters who try to do the opposite of what people expect, Gilles and Poirier had their partial step sequence from the 2015-16 short dance adopted as a new pattern dance by the ISU and dubbed the "Maple Leaf March". They had been struggling with that program all season, tweaking it constantly and changing the music entirely three weeks before the Worlds, where they ended up placing fifth in the short dance to put them into the final flight for the free dance. At the 2017 World Championships they recorded their second straight eighth-place finish. After winning silver at the 2018 Canadian Championships, Gilles and Poirier competed at PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games where they had yet another eighth-place finish. They followed up by matching their career-best World Championship result a month later.Poirier had a prior successful partnership with Vanessa Crone that included a World Junior silver medal in 2008, a Canadian title in 2011, and competing at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.Poirier completed his Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics at the University of Toronto.  Passionate about language, he continues to spend time reading and doing linguistics research.  He is currently training with Piper Gilles for the 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games. Also on Episode 41, Wendi and Dfernando talk about non-celebratory Valentine's Day, the release of BARB & STAR GO TO VISTA DEL MAR and those 1970s TV commercials featuring creepy stop-motion dolls.  And on the RIPE & ROTTEN REPORT there's the 2012 fashion documentary VERSAILLES '73: American Runway Revolution, Gen Z vs. Gen X, the hilarious Cheri Oteri and slow texters.   Follow us on our Instagram: Wendi McLendon-CoveyDfernando ZarembaGENERATION RIPE...  and our guest Paul Poirier and his Twitter. Remember to subscribe, rate & leave a review for GENERATION RIPEVisit Dfernando Zaremba's website: dfernandozaremba.com

Spelling Bee of Canada/Épelle-Moi Canada's Regional Competitions across Canada began on Saturday, March 2, and continue through Sunday, April 7, 2019. Over 4000 English and French spelling bee participants in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia will be competing for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place titles in three age divisions: Primary (ages 6-8), Junior (ages 9-11), and Intermediate (ages 12-14). Each first place Regional winner advances to the Canadian Championships, to be held in Richmond Hill, ON, on Sunday, May 5, 2019. “With such strong participation again this year, the message is clear – spelling bees are good for our kids, youth and our communities,” says Dr. Nagina Parmar, President of Spelling Bee of Canada (SBOC). “With the support of parents, Chapter Presidents and volunteers, we're encouraging young people to expand their vocabulary, communication skills and self-confidence by providing a foundation for future scholastic achievements through our theme of ‘Education + Perseverance = Success'.” Incorporating technology to better meet the changing needs of participants and their families, is one of SBOC's modernizations. Over the past months, bee participants have been preparing for the challenging words they will encounter by using SBOC's web-based coaching app to practice anytime, anywhere, on any web-enabled device. This is just one of the many advancements the new board members are advocating. “We're thrilled to have passionate new board members join us this year. Coming from spelling bee backgrounds, they're adding new perspectives, sharing their expertise and are dedicated to helping us reach our goals,” says Julie Spence, SBOC's CEO and Founder. “As a registered charity, we depend on like-minded businesses, organizations and individuals to contribute time, materials, service and/or funds to make our spelling bees and educational programs possible.” In its 32nd year, SBOC has welcomed over 50,000 children as spelling bee participants. SBOC, a not-for-profit grassroots organization, was established in the greater Toronto area in 1987 and led to the development of an Ontario Spelling Bee. Since then, SBOC has been promoting children and youth literacy with the mission to enrich the children and youth learning experience and engage schools and the community at large in an annual education process. Long-term, SBOC plans on establishing chapters in each province and territory in order to create a National Spelling Bee, providing access to English and French language learning through their proprietary online platforms and ultimately engaging approximately one million participants across Canada. Recently, Dorine Joelle from Spelling Bee Of Canada was live on our show. During our conversation, Ms. Joelle talked about: – Epoi Moi Of Canada (French version of The Spelling Bee Of Canada) – some background on The Spelling Bee Of Canada and Epoi Moi Of Canada – How did her and Julie Spence (the founder of Spelling Bee of Canada) met – The first event that the organizations collaborated on – the process to qualify for the contest – How the contest is a year round process – Literacy in Canada – Making the children the focus of the competition not the parents – The biggest change that she has seen with the organization You can find out more information about the Spelling Bee Of Canada via: Website Instagram Facebook Twitter Visit The Dr. Vibe Show™ at https://www.thedrvibeshow.com/ Please feel free to email The Dr. Vibe Show™ at dr.vibe@thedrvibeshow.com Please feel free to “Like” the “The Dr. Vibe Show” Facebook fan page here God bless, peace, be well and keep the faith, Dr. Vibe

Jason rapidly improved, and at age 12, he competed in his first Canadian Championships! 20-plus years of training and commitment has rewarded Jason with hundreds of honors and successes. “I raced in 65 World Cups and 10 World Championships – over 130 international races overall.” (making Jason one of the most accomplished and experienced speed skaters in Canadian history). Synchronized swimmer Helen Vanderburg Shaw is born in Calgary, Alberta. Helen Vanderburg Shaw was born in Calgary, Alberta on January 12, 1959. From an early age, she showed amazing talent as a synchronized swimmer. In 1973, Vanderburg Shaw won the Canadian Junior Championships; in 1977 she took first place at the Pan Pacific Games and earned six gold medals at the Canadian Championships. But Calgary’s phenomenal teen swimmer was just warming up. In 1978 at the World Aquatic Games in Berlin, she became the first Canadian to win the World Championships, taking gold medals in both the solo and duet events. In fact, with partner Michelle Caulkins, she was the first non-American to win both events in the same competition. She repeated her win the next year at the 1979 Pan Am Games in Puerto Rico, and at the International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Cup in Tokyo. Vanderburg Shaw was elected Canada’s Female Athlete of the Year in both 1978 and 1979. She was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 1980, and into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1983. In 1979, at the tender age of 20, Vanderburg Shaw retired from professional sport and earned a degree in physical education. She’s now a businesswoman in the physical fitness industry. Vera Pezer has always had a mind for curling.  From her early days in Meskanaw, SK, tossing stones on a two sheeter at the age of 6, Vera developed a lifelong passion for the roaring game.  In our conversation, we cover her development at the University of Saskatchewan where she honed her curling skills and her studies, eventually blending the two as part of her PhD in Sports Psychology.  Vera won 4 Canadian Championships as Team Saskatchewan.  First as third for Joyce McKee in 1969, then skipping Sheila Rowan, Joyce, and Lenore Morrison to three consecutive national victories from 1971 to 1973. Vera then stepped back from curling, but eventually found herself working with the CCA, providing a focus on the mental aspects of the game. After the 1992 Winter Olympics, career again pulled her away from the game, but her passions remained and she directed this energy into writing a book "The Stone Age: A Social History of Curling on the Prairies", published in 2003.  She followed up with "Smart Curling: Perfect Your Game Through Mental Training" in 2007.     Vera tells stories from across her curling career including the Canadian Championships (CLCA and Macdonald Lassies), the 1988 Olympic Trials, and shares her thoughts on the modern game.  You'll also hear about her clash with Orest in curling's original "Battle of the Sexes" in 1972.   In addition to her own books, you can find out more about Vera Pezer in "Tales of a Curling Hack" by Doug Maxwell, "Curling: The History, The Players, The Game" by Warren Hansen, and "Some outstanding women: they made Saskatoon a better community".   Next Episode: Dan Carey
