Welche Katastrophe improvisiert Andreas? This week Anna & Paul reimagine some classic adventures as period correct TV sitcoms. Imagine Laura Bow having her own weekly whodunit series, Gabriel Knight starring in his own X-Files or shek this out, how about Leisure Suit Larry has a show right, and he lives with his mom who's like the Muppet Babies mom or wait no, she's like Howard Wolfowitz's mom, and anyway Larry keeps trying to get how would you say... his loins tended to, and it never works out kinda like how it nothing ever worked out for Al Bundy and so in the end he's always just back home with his mom. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on rotoscoped games by hopping aboard The Last Express, the graphic adventure from Jordan Mechner and Smoking Car Productions of 1997 via publisher Broderbund. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: To Vienna (Tim) and past Epernay (Brett) Issues covered: our history with the game, playing the game on the iPad, the adventure game at the time, budget and sales, some history of the game, the edutainment industry, critical response, how many discs, cost of goods, the history of Epernay, generic settings vs the highly specific dates in the game, the overwhelm, jumping onto a moving train, photo research, pulling the brake, what to do with a dead body, trial and error, the various ways things can play out from just the first puzzle, rain in Europe in 1914, a digression into multiple speed CD-ROMs, getting into rotoscoping, a 3D modeled train with rotoscoped characters on top, chasing after a character in the hall, walk-boxes with Z values, the screen door effect, a linear game in space vs an open-ended game in time, synchronicity, the sense of a train trip, prioritizing animation vs input, mechanics-forward vs simulation-forward, what players care about and what they see. The Best Games Ever Podcast

Sometimes we seek out games. Other times they seek out us. It's another brilliant VG247 podcast. Hello again I won't lie. As I attempt to write some general blurb about this podcast for the fifth time and not make it the dullest thing imaginable, I'm struggling. But hey, ho, the VG247 The Best Games Ever Podcast returns, with episode 5. This week I worried we'd end up talking about how Steve from over the road lent a copy of Advance Wars on the GBA, but instead we soon became a blip on the radar of the local constabulary. That's right, it's time for the Best game you got for an odd reason. Not the best title, I admit, but stick with it. “What is VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast?” you ask, presumably because you read the words I'd written and not because you really wanted to ask. It's really quite simple, so listen up and please don't ask again: Each week three of us must present our choice for the best game ever that fits the title of the show (this week it must be a game that we reckon is great but came into our possession through odd means). Then our host/judge, Jim Trinca, will use his complete lack of objectivity to declare a winner and annoy at least one of us – most likely me. Each episode of the Best Games Ever Podcast skirts around the 30-minute mark. We've got a small number of things to talk about, and we don't go on random tangents about the latest video game news (unless it's somehow relevant to the games and stories being discussed). We feel 30 minutes is the perfect length. If we were doing this live and asked you to pay for a ticket, of course we'd make it longer, but we'd likely take the easy option and deviously put multiple Best Games into one show. Smart. Hopefully you can find room in your podcast-listening schedule for 30 minutes. If not, just cut one of the dull ones. Do you really need 12 shows about decluttering, or that one about talking to the artists that paint all the knock-off art onto funfair rides? Fair enough, that one sounds great. But you can get rid of one of the others. If this is your first time listening, do go back to listen to the previous episodes. They're not topical in the least, so go wild. We've got some details on the show's content below (if you want to get a refresher before heading to the comments to make a wonderful, considered post), so if you want to avoid spoilers, don't scroll past this warning. W A R N I N G Best game you got for an odd reason – Crimestoppers Edition This is the topic of Episode five of VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast. Here's a rundown of who picked what. Tom – Sam and Max Hit the Road (1993) The Point and Clink adventure game was all the rage back in the early ‘90s. LucasArts was at the very top of its craft, knocking out classic after classic, and this wacky adventure featuring the “Freelance Police” duo was another slam dunk. As not only one of the best games of its genre, but also with a strong case for being one of the best games ever made, surely this piece of video game history has got the competition sewn up? Alex – Perfect Dark (2000) It's hard to believe Perfect Dark released in 2000. By that time the Dreamcast was on its way to failure (sad eyes), and the PS2 was just around the corner. Nintendo was still happy to release Rare's classic sci-fi FPS on the N64, though, even with its own follow-up console, the GameCube due the following year. As the successor to the much-loved GoldenEye, Perfect Dark had a lot to live up to, and for the most part developer Rare absolutely smashed it. James – Metal Gear Solid 2 (2001) Who can forget that first look at Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty? It was a big moment for the PS2 and pretty much cemented Kojima as the top-tier creator he is known as today. The game itself held quite a few surprises, of course, some that didn't go down well with fans, but generally MGS2 is held in very high esteem as one of the greatest games of all time. Let us know what game you'd pick and if you agree that Jim has completely gone off the rails. If you like the podcast, please follow/subscribe and leave a review saying how wonderful it is, and tell all your friends. Do a tweet about it, post on Facebook, leave the podcast page open on the laptop screen in your local tech store. Come back in a week for The Best Game someone now in the know would think you'd made up. #podcast #videogames #funny Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Wirklich knackige Rätsel findet man keine.

It was fantastic to have Barry on the show, and I hope we talk again soon! The theme for this week otherwise, though, is final bosses; main antagonists. Along with my own top five, we of course hear some great choices from listeners as we explore some of the most iconic and interesting end baddies of all time. This week's playlist:Part 3 – Mike Richmond [Cocoa and the Time Machine 2: 24 Hour Parsley People]Dracula's Castle – Michiru Yamane [Castlevania: Symphony of the Night]Imaginary Places – Busdriver [Tony Hawk's Underground]Escape – Jonah Senzel [Pony Island]Bigfoot Party – Clint Bajakian, Michael Land and/or Peter McConnell [Sam & Max: Hit the Road]Eeeeeeeeeeeeee – Terry Scott Taylor [Skullmonkeys]Buttville – Tommy Tallarico [Earthworm Jim]Final Zone – Masato Nakamura [Sonic the Hedgehog]EOL Boss 2 – Marten Joustra and Andy Blythe, Michael Giacchino or Matt Furniss [Mickey Mania]Gang-Plank Galleon – David Wise [Donkey Kong Country]Undercaves – Spencer Nilsen, Brian Coburn and/or Andras Magyari [Ecco the Dolphin]Snake Eater – Norihiko Hibino and Cynthia Harrell [Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater]Flame of the Ancient World – Mark Morgan [Fallout]Laniakiea – Valentine Parkhomenko [Cradle]Las Vegas – Barry Leitch [Top Gear]A Very Final Finale – Barry Leitch [Horizon Chase Turbo]Deadbeard's Battle Theme – Motoi Sakuraba [Golden Sun]Formidable Oak (Exterior, Interior, Plasm Wraith Battle!) – Asuka Hayazaki, Atsuko Asahi and/or Hajime Wakai [Pikmin 3]Escape – Kazuki Muraoka, Hiroyuki Togo, Takanari Ishiyama, Lee Jeon Myung and/or Maki Kirioka [Metal Gear Solid]The Prince of Darkness – Koji Kondo [The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past]Battle in Japan – Akira Yamaoka and Andrius Klimka [World of Tanks]Terracotta Army (The End) – Gareth Coker [Minecraft: Chinese Mythology]Select – Junk Ozawa and/or Jesahm [Donkey Konga]Master Hand – ??? Tony has been vaguely threatening Matt with the prospect of doing an episode on a classic PC point-and-click adventure game for months, and at long last he's followed through on that threat. This week he finally gets his way by introducing Matt to LucasArts' classic 1993 adventure game: Sam and Max Hit the Road. Based on the comic book by Steve Purcell, the game is a comedy noir about a smartmouthed dog and a rabbit who solve crimes as a pair of freelance detectives. Blending Saturday morning cartoon style and slapstick with a side-eye reverence for mid-century kitsch and roadside tourist traps, Sam and Max might be the reason Tony's sense of humor is what it is. Joining them this week is Matt's brother, Jeff Ferrara. Jeff is one of the hosts of the Game Sharks Podcast, a weekly show where they discuss video game news, trends, and the stuff they're playing. Follow them on Instagram (@gamesharkspodcast) and subscribe to the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts!

In this new tittilating episode of the Daydreamcast, we present our first guest, Calvin Kemph, editor-in-chief of some film site called Twin Geeks and actual former gaming journalist for many years. Things quickly turn raunchy as we reflect on the properties of anthropomorphic goo, the many forms of S&M, and the questionable importance of undergarments in making new friends. Our main game of the week leads us down the rabbit hole of '90s adventure game goodness. Coming from our game of the week, the wacky detective/noir spoof Sam & Max Hit The Road , we talk about our history with adventure games, re-open the age-old argument on Sierra vs. LucasArts, and give credit to the Scummiest of Virtual Machines.

Now many console gamers may not know the name "LucasArts", although some of their titles have come to consoles. But LucasArts is much more known in the realm of computer gaming, as many of their titles have been released on a plethora of home computer platforms. From the Atari 8-bit family, to the Commodore 64, and later to the Atari ST, Amiga, FM Towns, IBM PC, and Macintosh computer lines, LucasArts made their fortune and glory, best known for their amazing graphic adventure games, which utilized their in-house engine known as SCUMM, as well as some top notch Star Wars games. LucasArts continued to publish and develop many games until 2012, when their parent company Lucasfilm was purchased by Disney. In 2013, LucasArts sadly let go of their internal development teams, and now exists solely as a license holder. However, in spite of this, many of their classic titles are available on services such as Steam and GOG.com, and I highly recommend checking them out. Now, for this episode, I will make mention that LucasArts used a special music engine for many of their games called iMUSE, which allowed for dynamic music; music tracks could seamlessly segue-way into one another to best fit the mood. Some of the tracks featured will demonstrate iMUSE in action. Additionally, some of these tracks were originally MIDI tracks, and I have selected to use recordings as they would sound running through a MIDI module known as the Roland MT-32. Make sure your DOS box has enough free RAM and you have your copy protection codes ready, because we're about to go on a time warp of amazing LucasArts music! =====Game - Composer - Title - Year - System==== 1) Maniac Mansion – Chris Grigg & David Lawrence - “Opening Titles (Commodore 64 version)” - October 5, 1987 (C64/Apple II), March 1988 (DOS), 1989 (Amiga/Atari ST/DOS v2) 2) Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders – Matthew Alan Kane & Chris Grigg - “Main Theme (FM Towns version)” - October 1988 (C64/DOS), 1989 (Amiga/Atari ST/DOS v2), 1990 (FM Towns) 3) Loom – Based on “Swan Lake” by Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky; arranged by George “The Fat Man” Sanger & Eric Hammond - “Opening Title” & “Guild of Glassmakers” (Roland MT-32 versions) - May 1990 (DOS/Mac OS/Amiga/Atari ST), 1991 (FM Towns), 1992 (DOS Talkie) 4) Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe – Michael Land - “Opening Titles” - August 1991 (DOS) 5) The Secret of Monkey Island – Michael Land, Barney Jones, Andy Newell, & Patrick Mundy - “Voodoo Lady” & “The SCUMM Bar” (CD Audio versions) – October 1990 (Amiga/DOS Floppy/Atari ST/Mac OS), 1992 (DOS CD/FM Towns/Sega CD/Amiga CDTV) 6) Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge – Clint Bajakian, Peter McConnell, & Michael Land - “Villa de la Booty” - December 1991 (DOS/Amiga/Mac OS/FM Towns) 7) Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis – Clint Bajakian, Peter McConnell, & Michael Land - “The Colonies of Atlantis” - June 1992 (DOS/Amiga/Mac OS/FM Towns) 8) Day of the Tentacle – Clint Bajakian, Peter McConnell, & Michael Land - “Hotel Interiors – Present” - June 25, 1993 (DOS/Mac OS) 9) Sam & Max Hit the Road – Clint Bajakian, Peter McConnell, & Michael Land - “A Pleasantly Understated Credits Sequence” & “King of the Creatures” - November 1993 (DOS/Mac OS) 10) Full Throttle – The Gone Jackals - “Legacy” - April 30, 1995 (DOS/Mac OS) 11) Star Wars: Dark Forces – Michael Land (original arrangements by John Williams - “The Secret Base” - February 28, 1995 (DOS/Mac OS) 12 ) The Dig – Michael Land – “The Ancient City” - November 30, 1995 (DOS/Mac OS) 13) The Curse of Monkey Island – Michael Land (vocals: Dominic Armato, Alan Young, Gregg Berger, Michael Sorich) – “A Pirate I Was Meant To Be” - October 31, 1997 (Windows) 14) Outlaws – Clint Bajakian - “The Ballad of Dr. Death” - March 1997 (Windows) 15) Grim Fandango – Peter McConnell - “Blue Casket Bop” & “Casino Calavera” - October 30, 1998 (Windows)
