This week on the program, as a deadly heatwave has been sweeping across the country we look at what’s been happening in the news, including a brief tribute to the life and work of Rosemary Ellen Guiley, who suddenly passed away late last week at the age of 69. Our heart goes out to the many friends and family members who thought fondly of her; she will certainly be missed. Then we shift our attention to the remarkable achievements of the crew of Apollo 11. 50 years ago this week, NASA put men on the moon in one of the greatest technological achievements of the 20th century; joining us to discuss the Apollo 11 anniversary is Rod Pyle, the editor-in-chief of Ad Astra, the official publication of the National Space Society, and author of a number of books that include Heroes of the Space Age, Space 2.0, Interplanetary Robots, and several others. Rod has a Master’s Degree from Stanford University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Art Center College of Design. He studied astronomy and geology at UCLA, and worked in public outreach at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles. Rod also designed and wrote the Apollo Leadership Development Experience in association with The Conference Board and NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Rod has written at length about the Apollo missions, and his latest book, First on the Moon: The Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Experience, can be found at his website. Friend of the show Rod Pyle returns to discuss his latest book, and all things Apollo with Beth AND… Receiving the foreword from Buzz Aldrin himself! Rod’s impressions and insights from speaking with the Apollo 11 astronauts’ children (now grown adults) Combing through the NASA archives to find incredible, never before shared documents, photos and stories from the Apollo era And what the future of space can be, returning to the Moon, on to Mars, and beyond… Quotes from Rod here: “You get the sense of an eternal restlessness with Buzz (Aldrin)… he demands that we move further and faster and beyond in space exploration, and he has not stopped thinking about that since the day he returned.” “One thing that always impressed me from my years of training at the Johnson Space Center, I would walk along the Saturn V rocket, and share the experience with several executives who would start crying because it’s such a powerful experience as you walk from one end to the other, where you see what a massive accomplishment it all was…and I take them to the top of the rocket and explain that ‘all this is just to get the astronauts to the moon,’ and they are astonished.” “What I always try to do in my books is to both give the quotes of numbers, details about the missions, how many pounds of thrust the Saturn V rocket uses, etc., but that’s not speaking to our hearts, and that’s the conversation we need to have with people. The last time I saw this done well was when Elon Musk launched his Tesla from a Falcon Heavy into space, looking back on the Earth.” “On Apollo 12, Pete Conrad and Allan Bean were very serious and they were setting down the LEM, and there was this easy banter between two brothers sharing a common goal and landing right on target. He (Conrad) came down right on the money, and when they landed, it was like party time inside the LEM, they were slapping each other’s backs and it like listening to the “Throughout the [Apollo12] moonwalks, and there were two (Pete Conrad and Allan Bean), they were so overjoyed not just to be there and to be there on the moon, but to be in each other’s company; there was this warmth, and this joy, this kind of excitement and this almost child-like thrill.” About Rod Pyle: Rod Pyle is a space author, journalist and historian who has authored 15 books on space history, exploration and development for major publishers that have been released in ten languages. He is the Editor-in-Chief for the National Space Society’s quarterly print magazine Ad Astra, and his frequent articles have appeared in Space.com, LiveScience, Futurity, Huffington Post, Popular Science, Caltech’s E&S magazine, and WIRED. He has written extensively for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Caltech, including Technology Highlights for NASA’S Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Rod co-authored and lectured for the Apollo Executive Leadership Program for NASA’s Johnson Space Center and The Conference Board. New book releases for 2019 include Space 2.0 (with a foreword by Buzz Aldrin), Interplanetary Robots, Heroes of the Space Age, and First on the Moon (also with a foreword by Aldrin), which is currently in its fifth printing. Rod’s previous Apollo books Missions to the Moon (foreword by Gene Kranz) and Destination Moon are being republished for 2019. Leaving Southampton for the first time together by daylight, the Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria set sail in celebration of Cunard Cruise Line’s 175th anniversary, and we were there firsthand to capture it.
In this first official episode of Oi! Spaceman: A Doctor Who Love Story, Shana and Daniel discuss Tom Baker's first three stories: Robot, The Ark in Space, and The Sontaran Experiment. Also discussed: Doctor Who: Legacy, Colin Baker's dickishness, the feminism of Sarah Jane, and much, much more. Show notes:Main topic: Robot, the Ark in Space, and The Sontaran Experiment. Doctor Who: Legacy. A bit on Colin Baker. Extra-legally-obtained episodes? Another little bit on William Hartnell's antepenultimate episode The Smugglers. Shana's physical attraction to the iconic Tom Baker. Everyone's love for Sarah Jane Smith. The Third Doctor Era and Benny Hill. First mention of Harry Sullivan and "old girl." Sarah Jane's investigative reporting instincts in "Robot." The Third Doctor as the prototypical "Scientist Doctor" versus the Scientific Reform Society. "Burninating." Doctor Who and Isaac Asimov? Sarah Jane as the everywoman. Previewing future episodes on Jo Grant and the Third Doctor. The Ark in Space: one of Daniel's all-time favorites -- Shana is skeptical. Daniel can't remember who wrote the Ark in Space and gets it totally wrong. The charm of re-using corridors. The joy of bubble-wrap monsters and lo-fidelity TV screens. Shana has no memory of the Wirn, but loves the character bits. Doctor Who as an anthology series. Standoff between the Wirn and the Doctor. The Doctor tweaking Sarah Jane's feminism: what do we think? Every episode with the word "Time" is bad, except for one, and Daniel can't remember it until he googles it: BAD FAN! Sontar-HA! Did the Sontaran Experiment exist on a far-future Earth or another planet? We're both Bad Fans. The Sontarans torture people off-screen, and Sarah Jane's outfit is adorable. Second mention of Harry Sullivan and "old girl." The Sontarans as Space Nazis. Questioning humanity through the lens of fictional alien species. Military red tape. Sontaran makeup issues. Harry Sullivan's incompetence. Third mention of "old girl." Tom Baker's injuries and comparing the action scenes of the Third and Fourth Doctors. Sarah Jane's empathy. Anti-climactic endings in Doctor Who. Shana prefers Robot to The Ark in Space. Laughing at the B-movieness of Robot. Podcasting at the speed of Google! Ending on the classic quote from The Ark in Space. Links: Tom Baker talks about his 50th Anniversary Experience.Daniel's Twitter: @danieleharperShana's Twitter: @inkyosa
