The “I”s have it! And Lightnin' Licks Radio has the “I”s. Ten of them to be exact. Jay and Deon discuss their favorite vinyl records filed under the letter I. It's intimate and intense. It's immersive and inspiring though, ironically, they're idiots.--In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past half century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, idiotic, introverted award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming thirty-fifth episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. Send us a textThis episode, we look at what Rolling Stone magazine considers to be the best songs of the 80's. We have been critical of Rolling Stone in the past for the quality of their lists, and this time is no different. However, there's some good stuff in this list, which we're happy to acknowledge. Of course, we point out their failings as well – it'd be no fun if we didn't, would it?! In Rock News, we look at a new album from Coldplay (as if anybody cares!), the trials of Sean “Puffy” Combs, and The Beatles. Our “Album You Must listen to Before you Die” is 1985's The Nation's Saving Grace, by The Fall. Mick loves it, Jeff doesn't think much of it. So, what's new? Another fun episode. Enjoy. EPISODE 121: Says former chairman and CEO of Mercury Records, Danny Goldberg in his book Bumping into Geniuses, Bloom's “interest in rock and roll had more to do with the study of mass psychology in action than furthering the aggrandizement of spoiled rock stars. He approached PR as an applied science.” In fact, Bloom used his science to invent simple correlational techniques and no-cost market research tools. He joined the resulting data to what he calls “tuned empathy” and “saturated intuition” to help build or sustain the careers of figures like Michael Jackson, Prince, Bob Marley, Bette Midler, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Billy Idol, Peter Gabriel, David Byrne, John Mellencamp, Joan Jett, Queen, Kiss, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, Kool and the Gang, Chaka Khan, Run DMC, and roughly 100 others. He contributed to the success of films like The Great Gatsby, Down and Out in Beverly Hills, Outrageous Fortune, and Purple Rain. In the process, he helped generate $28 billion in revenues (more than the gross domestic product of Oman or Luxembourg) for companies like Sony, Disney, Pepsi Cola, Coca Cola, and Warner Brothers. And he did it by focusing not on profits but on soul. The result? Sterling Whitaker, author of The Grand Delusion: The Unauthorized True Story of Styx, calls Bloom, “probably the greatest press agent that rock and roll has ever known.” howardbloom.net/about-howard-bloom/Contact us: makingsoundpodcast.comFollow on Instagram: @makingsoundpodcastFollow on Threads: @jannkloseJoin our Facebook GroupPlease support the show with a donation, thank you for listening!

Welcome to today's episode, where we journey back to the year 1982—a pivotal year in music history. This was a time when genres were in flux, new sounds were emerging, and the music industry was undergoing significant transformations. We'll explore the coming end of disco, the rise of heavy metal and hip hop, and some fascinating developments in Japanese music. We'll also examine the political climate of the time, the impact of MTV and music videos, and the exclusion of artists of color from this new visual medium. ### The Music of 1982 **The Decline of Disco:** By 1982, the disco craze that had dominated the late 1970s was waning. The backlash against disco, epitomized by events like the infamous Disco Demolition Night in 1979, had taken its toll. While disco's influence lingered in pop and dance music, it was clear that the genre's heyday was over. Artists who had ridden the disco wave began to either evolve their sound or fade from the spotlight. **The Rise of Heavy Metal:** Heavy metal was on the ascent, with bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Ozzy Osbourne leading the charge. The genre's aggressive sound and rebellious spirit resonated with a generation looking for something more intense than what mainstream rock offered. Metal's rise was part of a broader movement towards harder, more complex music that also included punk and hard rock. **The Emergence of Hip Hop:** Hip hop was also beginning to gain traction. While still primarily an underground movement, 1982 saw the release of seminal tracks that would lay the groundwork for the genre's explosion in the mid-1980s. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five's "The Message" was a groundbreaking track that highlighted the social issues facing inner-city communities, proving that hip hop was a powerful new voice in music. **Innovative Japanese Music:** In Japan, the music scene was vibrant and innovative. Artists like Yellow Magic Orchestra were blending electronic music with pop, creating sounds that were ahead of their time. Meanwhile, city pop, a genre that combined jazz, funk, and R&B, was becoming popular. Japanese musicians were not only pushing the boundaries of traditional genres but also influencing global music trends. ### Political Climate of 1982 The early 1980s were marked by significant political and social changes. In the United States, President Ronald Reagan's administration was characterized by conservative policies, economic changes, and a strong stance against the Soviet Union. The Cold War was still a dominant force in global politics, affecting cultural and artistic expressions around the world. Economic policies were shifting towards deregulation and tax cuts, which had mixed impacts on different segments of society. In the UK, Margaret Thatcher's government was implementing neoliberal economic policies, leading to significant social and economic changes. These policies sparked resistance and protest from various groups, including labor unions and youth movements, which were often reflected in the music of the time. ### The Rise of MTV and Music Videos **MTV's Impact:** MTV launched in August 1981, revolutionizing the music industry by making music videos a crucial part of an artist's success. The visual aspect of music became as important as the sound, changing how artists promoted their music and connected with fans. Videos like Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" and Duran Duran's "Hungry Like the Wolf" became iconic, setting new standards for production and creativity. **Exclusion of Artists of Color:** However, MTV faced criticism for its lack of diversity. Early on, the network primarily featured white rock artists, excluding many artists of color, particularly in genres like R&B and hip hop. This exclusion was symptomatic of broader racial biases in the music industry. It wasn't until Michael Jackson's breakthrough that MTV began to more regularly feature black artists, a shift largely driven by the massive popularity and undeniable talent of Jackson himself. ### Conclusion 1982 was a transformative year in music, marked by the decline of disco, the rise of heavy metal and hip hop, and innovative contributions from Japanese artists. The political climate of the time influenced these musical shifts, while the advent of MTV changed the way music was consumed and promoted, albeit with significant racial biases that needed addressing. As we look back, we can see how these developments laid the groundwork for the diverse and dynamic music landscape we enjoy today. Link to the 1982 playlist. Joe Rihn is a DJ, musician and writer with endless enthusiasm for his hometown of Los Angeles. His show Audio Days explores the wide world of electronic music and beyond with particular attention to artists pushing the boundaries of sound. In this special interview episode of Audio Days, influential UK artist Mark Stewart discusses his body of work, his creative processes and the music that has inspired him along the way. After beginning his career as the frontman of Bristol's celebrated post-punk band The Pop Group, Stewart went on to break new ground in electronic music through his work with dub producer and On-U Sound Records head, Adrian Sherwood, along with drummer Keith LeBlanc, bassist Doug Wimbish and guitarist Skip McDonald. Having performed as members of the Sugar Hill Records house band on early hip hop classics including “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, LeBlanc, Wimbish and McDonald provided the instrumental foundation for Stewart's 1985 album, “As the Veneer of Democracy Starts to Fade,” as well as other projects such as Tackhead and Fats Comet. With his new record “VS.,” which releases April 8, 2022 on Emergency Hearts, Stewart continues in that collaborative spirit. In addition to including names like KK Null, Stephen Mallidner and Mike Watt in its roster of uncompromising artists, VS. features contributions from late musicians Lee “Scratch” Perry and Mika Vainio. Following the hour-long interview segment, this episode features a mix of industrial, synth-wave and left-field cuts from the orbit of Mark Stewart and beyond. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dublab-inconversation/support

“It really has to do with this ability to, to dream and to live unencumbered.” — Dr. Dwight RadcliffSeeing justice, equity, and social transformation through the lens of hip-hop culture and Christian faith, Rev. Dr. Dwight Radcliff offers a vision of freedom and unencumbered life for the future of the Black community to which we can all bear witness.Raising challenging questions about the meaning of thriving in a culture dominated by fear, he speaks in a prophetic voice, interweaving the powerful, compounding effects of the language of the Gospel and the language of hip-hop.As a cultural theologian, community leader, and pastor, one of Dwight's many gifts is presence—presence to emotion, to the realty of injustice, and to the complexities of thriving in the context of race and gender. He speaks about the power of purpose and calling in his life, pointing out the unique insight hip-hop, rap, and R&B music can offer the human experience. He calls us to be attuned to the whole reality of pain, suffering, trauma, and struggle when discussing psychological and spiritual health and thriving. And he bears witness to fear, anger, and grief—re-sensitizing us to our pain and vulnerability—speaking truth for the sake of beauty and justice. In this conversation, we discuss:Thriving as the ability to dream and live unencumbered, and the ways the Black church embodies that thrivingThe grievous reality of Black double-consciousness that results from systemic racismAnd his personal experience as a Black man todayMental health in the Black communityThe power of sanctified purposeHow hip-hop culture and music help us understand thriving at embodied, emotional, and familial levels, beyond the horizon of rational understandingAnd how the prophetic vision of hip hop operates in the same tradition of justice spelled out by the Gospel that Jesus taught and lived.Show NotesCheck out Rev. The “I”s have it! And Lightnin' Licks Radio has the “I”s. Ten of them to be exact. Jay and Deon discuss their favorite vinyl records filed under the letter I. It's intimate and intense. It's immersive and inspiring though, ironically, they're idiots. -- In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For nearly one half of a century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. Because they have a reasonably good solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. They had previously utilized the letters A thru H, so naturally, they went with I. The “I” mixtape: [SIDE I-1] (1) INTHEWHALE – Animals (2) The Ice Man's Band – People Make the World Go ‘Round (3) Icehouse – Walls (4) Ice Cube – Down for Whatever (5) Instant Funk – Never Let It Go Away [SIDE I-2] (1) Donnie Iris – Joking (2) The Impressions – I'm Loving Nothing (3) The Icicle Works – Starry Blue Eyed Wonder (4) Weldon Irvine – Morning Sunshine (5) Iron & Wine – Upward Over the Mountain [END] Sonic Contributors to the thirty-fifth episode of Lightnin' Licks Radio podcast include: Lee Moses, Brothers Johnson, Holland-Dozier-Holland, James Todd Smith. This week we're celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. We'll hear interviews with some of the most influential rappers and DJ's of the past few decades. Today, we kick things off with three hip-hop pioneers. First, DJ Kool Herc, who is considered the first DJ to isolate the breaks — the most danceable beats in a record — and repeat them to keep the dancers going. Then, Grandmaster Flash, who was one of the first DJ's to make successful recordings. He'll describe some of the turntable techniques he developed. Finally, we'll hear from Melle Mel, the rapper with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Their record "The Message" was the first successful rap record that offered social commentary.
EPISODE 92: Says former chairman and CEO of Mercury Records, Danny Goldberg in his book Bumping into Geniuses, Bloom's “interest in rock and roll had more to do with the study of mass psychology in action than furthering the aggrandizement of spoiled rock stars.
By the 1980s, hip-hop artists were beginning to expand the party culture of hip-hop's early years and think about what they wanted to say with their music. Faced with a city wrecked by economic abandonment and neglect, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five released “The Message” in 1982, calling out the conditions head-on: “rats in the front room, roaches in the back, junkies in the alley with a baseball bat.” And to take control of this environment of neglect, young artists began shaping their environment through dance, fashion, and graffiti. But with the growth in the culture came a crackdown on Black America: in the form of “broken windows” policing, and then a ramped up War on Drugs. And as some members of the hip-hop counterculture became targets of police harassment, they began to fight the power with work that was bold and demanding..In the second episode of “Street Disciples,” Trymaine Lee hears from: Melle Mel of the Furious Five, fashion designer Dapper Dan, graffiti artist Cey Adams, sociologist Tricia Rose, historian Mark Anthony Neal, and hip-hop activist Harry Allen.
