53 years ago today, a rock festival in Woodstock helped define a generation. Today our guests are Dan Bukszpan and Karen M. Greenburg, who created the gorgeous book “Woodstock: 50 Years of Peace and Music”. Their unique book captures the magic — from concert details, never-before-published photos and tales of the brown acid — to interviews with the attendees and the artists 50 years later. (Your host Gail was among a half million young people there. At 14 years old she can be glimpsed in the Woodstock movie, which zooms in on her twirling a daisy. Her photos and stories are also featured in the book.) Dan and Karen share why they created the book, the experiences they had putting it together, and new friendships (including Gail) that arose as the team put the book together. Woodstock could only happen once and was a once in a lifetime experience — yet it lives on in our ideas, feelings, books like this one, and people still living it. 50 years ago in August 1969, just weeks after man set foot on the moon, a rock music festival know as “Woodstock” took place in upstate New York in a small town named Bethel. Nearly half a million young people descended on the town for three days of what would be an iconic event in American history. PBS recently released a film entitled Woodstock: Three Days that Defined a Generation. What took place at Woodstock that “defined a generation”? Why is this music festival, known for drug use and “free love”, considered to be “a handoff of the country between generations with far different values and ideals”? How does it help explain where we are today?...
Episode #29
Um assunto clássico, clichê, mas com um toque dopecast!
Evan Nickles, former owner of Mystic Emporium, and Dan Curland, proprietor of Mystic Disc, talk about the three days of peace and love that defined a generation. Each of them still has vivid memories of attending the famed concert that featured Jimi Hendrix, Santana and Janis Joplin.
Fifty years ago, about 30,000 hippies descended on Prairieville, Louisiana, for three days of peace, love, and music at the New Orleans Pop Festival. While not technically in New Orleans, the New Orleans Pop Festival drew quite a few national acts that had performed about two weeks earlier at Woodstock and helped inspire a generation of New Orleans musicians.
Em comemoração dos 50 anos do Woodstock, contamos um pouco a história do festival que marcou gerações, desde a edição de 69, até as edições dos anos 90 e tentativa de edição em 2019.
Half a century ago, the world witnessed three days of peace, love, and intermittent entertainment scattered between intermittent showers. Mike, Mike, Michelle, Ricky, and Bambi avoid the brown acid and take a trip to the music event that gave those who were growing up in the crazy ’60’s hope for a better tomorrow. Well we're talking a lot about the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing this week, but of course, the Summer of ‘69 was known for many other things too. Not least, the original Woodstock! But the plans to mark the 50th anniversary of that have not been going so well. It's been more than a month since the team behind the Woodstock 50 festival lost its original venue. The team is searching meticulously for a new site for the highly anticipated golden jubilee anniversary gig. But just last week, applications for an alternative venue were rejected by a township in New York state. So what's been going on?
