Not too long ago, I couldn't get my writing published anywhere. I was pitching so many stories that it felt like publications were being created just to reject me. Then I pitched a story about the decline of key changes in popular music to Tedium, a publication run by Ernie Smith that explores “the dull side of the internet.” Much to my shock, Smith agree to publish the piece. And I'm glad he did. It went so viral that it not only ended up becoming one of Tedium's greatest hits, but it led to me working with NPR and The Economist. Frankly, this newsletter wouldn't exist had that piece not been published. This week, I decided to try to return the favor to Tedium by running one of their pieces here. If you enjoy it, you should subscribe to their newsletter. It's undoubtedly one of the best things on the internet. As a reminder, this is the podcast version of the newsletter Can't Get Much Higher. In the days since our last reading, the east side Tops grocery store where Massey and 9 other black people were slaughtered has re-opened. Many black residents wanted the building destroyed. The Race Soldier, Payton Gendron, was federally charged with 27 counts of hate crime and weapons violations. He could face the death penalty if convicted. Last week, Pelonero detailed the indicted and extradition procedure against "Joey." She suggested that the media spun a narrative of Christopher bragging and boasting about killing black people so that the public has an uncomplicated story about a lone, Racist killer. Pelonero continues to insist that this White man is "crazy," a pitiful dingbat. Ernie Smith, a black male and former co-worker of Christopher, was interviewed for the investigation. He said that he and "Joey" used to wrestle and "fool around" after work. In the proceeding paragraph, Smith says that sometimes he and Joey would "fool around" with "street girls" (sex workers), although Christopher would not have intercourse with the female workers. The homoeroticism of the text is boundless. Gus suspects "Joey" was sexually attracted to and perhaps involved with black males like Ernie Smith and maybe even Collin Cole, a transvestite who worked the streets as a prostitute named "Wilma." Visit SparkLoop: https://sparkloop.app/?utm_campaign=simonowens If there's one thing Twitter's known for, it's character limits. It famously only allowed 140 of them and then later expanded to 280. In some ways, that forced brevity made Twitter what it is today: a real-time commentary on what's going on in the world. But for years, Twitter has been trying to expand beyond its own character limits, first by launching features like photos, gifs, and videos. It launched a threading tool that allows you to string several tweets together. In 2021, it acquired newsletter platform Revue. And then just recently, it debuted a new tool called Notes. Though it's still in the testing phase, Notes will allow users to publish longer blog posts within their Twitter feed.  But is this something users actually want? Or will it eventually join the very large graveyard of social media features that never caught on?  To answer this question, I brought on Ernie Smith. Not only is Ernie one of the foremost experts on publishing platforms and newsletters, he also got early access to Twitter Notes and tested them out for himself. He gave me his initial reactions to the tool and we discussed whether it would usher in an era of longform writing to Twitter.

The Y2K bug generated a lot of fear, but all that hype fizzled when the new millennium didn't start with a digital apocalypse. It turns out that fear was just aimed at the wrong catastrophe. While plenty were riding high on the rise of the internet beyond the Y2K scare, another disaster had been brewing since 1995—and would bring them back down. But the dot-com bubble wasn't the end. The internet was here to stay. Not long after the turn of the millennium, the dot-com economy collapsed. Peter Relan points to the flawed business plans that fueled the dot-com bubble, and how many entrepreneurs and investors underestimated the complexity of building a business on the internet. Ernie Smith tells the story of Pets.com, and how a similar idea a decade later had a much better chance of succeeding. Gennaro Coufano reveals the element of luck that saved Amazon from going under —and how it evolved in the aftermath. Julia Furlan reflects on the changes the dot-com bubble brought, and what's left to consider. And Brian McCullough describes how the dot-com bubble paved the way for a more resilient digital economy. If you want to read up on some of our research on the dot-com bubble, you can check out all our bonus material over at redhat.com/commandlineheroes. The page is built in the style of 1995—check it out.Follow along with the episode transcript.

I think it’s safe to say at this point that digital publishers recognize the importance of email newsletters. In 2016, Facebook pulled the rug out from underneath a media industry that had, until then, relied on it for hockey stick growth, and over the next several years publishers generally warmed to the idea that the decentralized distribution offered by email newsletters would prove more reliable than the fickle whims of social media giants. Today, nearly every media company has a robust email marketing strategy, and some news startups interact with their readerships almost entirely within the inbox. We’ve also seen the launch of platforms that make it easier for individual writers to distribute their own newsletters and monetize them through paid subscriptions. So are newsletters reaching a saturation point? Are they generating real ad revenue? And can newsletters actually replace Facebook as a referral source? These are just some of the questions I put toward Ernie Smith, the creator and editor of Tedium, a fantastic newsletter that almost operates as a kind of Wikipedia of obscure topics. Smith also runs a popular Facebook group for the newsletter industry, and he’s one of the most knowledgeable people I know when it comes to newsletter trends.

IRL - Online Life Is Real Life

TL;DR: We have access to more things to read than ever before. Too much, in fact. Our reading habits have shifted. We skim a lot. We look for full stories baked into headlines. Our eyes bounce around from one article to the next, and we try and fail to manage how many things we read at once. Some of us can no longer concentrate on a book—no matter how good it might be. Reading has changed. And we’re changing alongside it. With host Manoush Zomorodi, Derek Thompson at the Atlantic talks headlines; Ernie Smith from Tedium rails against our bad browser tab habits; librarian rock star Nancy Pearl makes the case for analog books; Beth Rogowsky discusses if audiobooks can replace reading; and Nate Weiner from Mozilla’s Pocket shows us one way we can manage our reading overload. Happy New Year — let’s get working on that “I will read more this year” resolution. IRL is an original podcast from Mozilla. For more on the series go to irlpodcast.org. With so many possible articles to read every day online, it can be hard to sort through what to read and what to skip. This week I interviewed a guy named Ernie Smith. Why do I think Smith is so fascinating? Because over the past decade he's created two successful media properties, each with the absolute opposite goal of the other. The first was a Tumblr account called ShortFormBlog. It amassed over 140,000 followers and was one of the hyperreactive news aggregators that thrived in the aughts. Every single day Smith logged in and plucked the most interesting quotes and stats from news stories and served them up in a tightly-packaged news product. The blog was so successful that it was covered in the pages of both Newsweek and Time (back when these were still relevant publications). And then just when ShortFormBlog was at the height of its popularity, Smith abandoned it and launched a newsletter called Tedium. Unlike ShortFormBlog, Tedium would only be published twice a week and, instead of chasing headlines, it would tackle the most boring subjects imaginable and try to make them interesting. Several of its issues have gone incredibly viral and the newsletter now has over 10,000 subscribers. Smith and I talked about why he made the switch and whether it's possible to run a profitable independent newsletter.

Fab 5, formed in 1970, is Jamaica's pre eminent popular band, whether measured by record sales at home, hits on the charts, frequency of engagements or major awards won over the years.Their first recording, "Come Back And Stay", was number one in Jamaica, and in their first year on the road, and for the following two years, they won the only available awards, the Swing Awards for best band of 1971-72, 1972-73 and 1973-74. They also took the El Suzie Award as Joint Top Road and Dance Band for 1975-76 and the RJR Listeners' Award for Best Band in 1980.They backed Johnny Nash on all the reggae cuts comprising most of his platinum album "I Can See Clearly Now". Two singles from that album, "Guava Jelly" and "Stir It Up", established Bob Marley as a major songwriter on the international scene.Fab 5 have enjoyed an endless succession of hits in Jamaica and the "ethnic" markets of North America. In their early years such songs as "Chirpy Cheep", "Shaving Cream", "Oh, Dad" and "Love Me For A Reason", and their musicality and showmanship made Fab 5 the rage on the dance and show circuits.More recently, they have been kept on top by the likes of "Yu Safe", "Ring Road Jam", "Feeling Horny", "Computer Mad", "What The Police High Command Can Do", "Jamaican Woman", "Psalms", "All Night Party", "Mini", "Sweat", "Don't Wear None", "Freeze", "Good Buddy", "Mango" and their "Live" series.

He started recording in the late '60s; his first recording was "She's Gone" in 1969 but the release of "Hear That Train" with Ernest Wilson, who was a member of the Claredonians, really got the ball rolling. The pairing with Wilson was spur of the moment as Stewart also led a group (the Wildcats) that performed in Kingston's hotels and clubs. From that, he joined Byron Lee & the Dragonaires and gigged all over Jamaica with the popular group. Though reggae-rooted, Stewart was popular with tourists because of his love for American pop hits, especially soul music. A stint with Boris Gardner Happening Band was his last group venture before going solo in 1973, when he enjoyed a local hit with "Funny Feeling." In 1974, he won the Jamaica Festival Song Competition by singing "Play de Music," written by Ernie Smith. Roman Stewart -- his brother -- won the contest the following year with a song Stewart and Willie Lindo wrote, entitled "Hooray Festival." Just Music  Oldies and memories   Born in, Jamaica Turban X (Warren Whyte) grew up as one of ten children. With such a large family, the struggles of life were eminent, but the only thing that had kept him going was the sweet sound of reggae music. Turban X's older brother sneaked him out of the house to an open mic stage show out in the street and coached him on stage. With a little encouragement from the crowd he gained confidence and boldly belted out his song as the crowd cheered and his faith was sealed. .Since then Turban X has performed in several venues with some of Jamaica's top reggae artists, such as John Holt, Ernie Smith, Bushman, Brigadier Jerry and Beenie Man. At one point he also opened up for Sanchez. Turban X is not only inspired by the greats of reggae music, but also other genres including The Manhattans, Sam Cooke, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton just to name a few. Turban X is influenced by the various areas of reggae music and has given him a range of songs and types of music he plans to release. Turban X, with his clean lyrics and positive attitude, seeks to break through musical barriers. Currently, he is working on his upcoming album. Releasing the first single for that album entitled, "Jah Love", Turban X is destined to be a living legend.
