It's back for a new lease of life in 2024, just in time for Christmas. Some 38 years after it was originally published, Harry Sullivan's War has been released as audiobook by BBC Audio. We present an extract from the book, and speak with the man who has brought it to life - Christopher Naylor. Lifelong Doctor Who fan Chris tells us about his career to date, and how he came to play Harry Sullivan for Big Finish.
We conclude our look at Ian Marter's time on Doctor Who with a chat about the role of Harry Sullivan in Terror of the Zygons and The Android Invasion. Harry starts out strongly in Zygons, but is treated poorly in his final appearance. Harry was the third wheel to the Sarah and the Doctor relationship, and he was bullied by both of them in the Season 12 finale, which helps explain, storywise, his derparture from the team. We suggest some ideas to give Harry a dramatic series exit. We wrap up by lamenting Marter's untimely death on his forty-second birthday and the missed possibility of him writing for New Adventures novels. As a listener bonus, the final 10 minutes of the podcast is an August 1984 interview with Ian Marter on The Chuck Rabb Show that previously appeared on Doctor Who: Podshock, episode 306, courtesy of Louis Trapani and Chuck Rabb. Opening and closing music is from the Terror of the Zygons soundtrack composed by Geoffrey Burgon. We recorded this podcast on 18 November 2024.
We continue on with our leisurely-paced examination of Ian Marter's time on Doctor Who by looking at Harry Sullivan's role in Genesis of the Daleks and Revenge of the Cybermen. The character starts out strong with Terry Nation's sidekick / buddy writing for Sullivan in Genesis, but by the time Bob Holmes writes Revenge, Harry is on the chopping block, and we witness a prickly, almost hostile relationship with Sarah and the scapegoat and butt of jokes for the Doctor — a total disintegration of the character due to no fault of Marter. Opening music is from the Genesis of the Daleks soundtrack composed by Dudley Simpson and closing music is "Rockfall" composed by Carey Blyton. We recorded this episode on 4 November 2024.

In this podcast we talk about Ian Marter's first two stories after his character, Harry Sullivan, joins the TARDIS crew: The Ark in Space and The Sontaran Experiment. We discuss the ease at which Marter portrays Sullivan as a decent, square-jawed Englishman. We also lament what could have been if the Doctor Who production team better utilised the character since he was an effective foil and compatriot of Tom Baker's Doctor. At the end of the podcast are two brief convention panel answers from Marter (on Harry being "naff" and "clumsy") in 1983 in Chicago celebrating 20 years of the programme. Opening music is from The Ark in Space soundtrack and closing music is from The Sontaran Experiment soundtrack, both composed by Dudley Simpson. We recorded this episode on 16 September 2024.
We continue with our Ian Marter discussion with a brief conversation about the debut of Harry Sullivan in "Robot"! But, before we get underway, we pick up where we left off with new details about Marter's time at St. Edmund Hall at Oxford University with the discovery that there is a recording on vinyl of Marter singing in You Can't Do Much Without a Screwdriver, an original musical staged by the Oxford University Experimental Theatre Club at the Oxford Playhouse in May 1965. Marter played the lead character, Guy Ffolkes, an Amnesian nationalist, and sings "Bang On" with Jack and Harry, described as two villains in the playbill. There's a photograph of Ian with Adèle Geras née Weston on stage during the production. We also uncovered a photograph of young Ian with fellow Oxford students, Tamara Ustinov, John Dodgson, Anne Bibby, and Nick Elliott rehearsing for another play. Plus a photograph of Marter with actor Richard Burton in a local pub. Opening and closing music is "Mysterious Robots," composed by Dudley Simpson. We recorded this episode on 26 August 2024.

Viajantes do alto-mar, alienígenas burocráticos e Ian Marter (que virá a ser o companion Harry Sullivan) em outro papel: vem com a gente nesse review!

1986 saw the release of the first two Companions of Doctor Who novels, original full-length books rather than novelizations of Doctor Who TV serials. There would only be one more after this one. Harry Sullivan's War was written by Ian Marter, who died tragically young, on his own 42nd birthday, just a couple of weeks after the book's release. Jim Sangster rejoins me as the guest for this week's book -- and also wrote this week's theme song! A video for Jim's son is found here. Song written by Jim Sangster and sung by Antony Owen. The first 8 minutes are an audio essay about the 1986 baseball season. If you're not a baseball fan, you will be after hearing this essay (or not). Recent guest Dale Smith recently penned an essay about Turlough and the Earthlink Dilemma, the first Companions of Doctor Who novel, covered on this show (by Dale Smith!) just last month. Tread Perilously returns to Doctor Who as Erik and Justin celebrate 90 years of Tom Baker. First up: Tom's debut story, "Robot." As The Doctor comes to grips with his new incarnation, a string of curious thefts activates UNIT to investigate. But, somehow, the Fourth Doctor already knows the break-ins will allow nefarious individuals to make a disintegrator gun. Meanwhile, Sarah Jane Smith's visit to an advanced scientific think tank leads her to believe the group may have disturbing intentions. Are the two things related? And will The Doctor figure himself out in time to assist UNIT in stopping a giant robot? Justin and Erik witness as Tom Baker portrays The Doctor at his most "Tom Baker-ish." They also discuss the circumstances that led to The Doctor's regeneration. Tom in a UNIT story leaves Justin perplexed. The fascy antagonists, though, are quite clear to him. Erik discusses producer Barry Letts' place in Doctor Who history and why "Robot" serves as an epilogue to his era. Ian Marter's first appearance as Harry Sullivan gets examined. Hairstyles of Doctor Who and Star Wars are also discussed. Professor Kettlewell proves to be a memorable guest character for several reasons and Justin identifies a commonality between the Fourth Doctor and Bugs Bunny.
Christmas Day. It's always easy to remember, as it's on 25 December each year. Except, in 2001, it wasn't - as the Eighth Doctor finds Harry Sullivan doing a crossword outside a cafe. We're looking at 2018 Short Trips subscriber exclusive Tuesday, which was written by Tony Jones. We speak with producer Ian Atkins about this little gem.
We're back from hiatus, and it's about time! Actually, this time it isn't about time, for once. It's about James Bond pastiches, mid-life crises, and both Freudian and Jungian interpretations of a plot that really makes no damn sense. Anthony and Julie are joined by friend-of-the-podcast R. Alan Siler for this season's side-step into the realms of audio. This time around, we have chosen to do something a little different – rather than focus on an original audio story, we discuss Return of the Cybermen, which is based on an earlier script for Revenge, and was released as part of Big Finish's Lost Stories range. Along the way, Julie rages at some of the casting choices, Anthony struggles with Stevenson's accent, and Alan has strong feelings about the glitter gun, comparing it to a glam rock stage prop! As you would expect, all three discuss the pros-and-cons of recasting much beloved characters such as Sarah Jane Smith and Harry Sullivan. Just like that, we've reached the end of Tom Baker's first season with Revenge of the Cybermen. And oh boy, is this one a doozy. Could this possibly be the worst Cybermen story to date? Well, obviously, you'll have to listen to this podcast episode to find out what we think in Shoulder Rub of Death! Along the way, Anthony fights the urge to nitpick every single element of the story, Don expresses his intense dislike of this version of the Cybermen, Julie wonders where she can get herself the sonic vibrator that's mentioned in the story, and Reilly is exasperated by what could only be described as “the world's smallest shoot-out.” The entire team talks about Harry Sullivan being an imbecile (because of course we do!) The Fourth Doctor era begins properly as we head off into the far future for The Ark in Space! It's the first story Produced by the legendary Phillip Hinchcliffe, meaning that the iconic Hinchcliffe/Holmes production team is now fully in place, and they're taking us to a space station in the far future where the future of humanity is at stake – what could possibly go wrong? Aside from the somewhat notorious bubble-wrap SFX, of course… Along the way, Julie questions Sarah's use of an oil lamp vs. a torch, Reilly draws parallels to the work of David Cronenburg, Anthony leans into British stereotypes, and Don imagines Harry Sullivan being played by Hugh Laurie. The entire team discusses how amazing and atmospheric the sets are, proving that brightly lit sets can work well! Michael Caton has been a constant presence on Australian screens since the 1970s and became a household name playing Harry Sullivan in The Sullivans. Re-casting beloved Doctor Who characters for audio stories is a contentious issue for some fans. Our aim for this episode is to invite the doubters to at the very least, give them a try. Our guest this time is Christopher Naylor, who plays fourth Doctor companion Harry Sullivan for Big Finish, and has appeared out of time in the U.N.I.T. Nemesis series. We discuss his career, his other creative outlets such as art, and how he approaches the iconic role for audio. "I think I'll stick to InterCity this time, Doctor." In this special episode Paddy and Tricia share their thoughts on Surgeon Lieutenant Harry Sullivan and his time in the TARDIS.
This title was released in November 2021. It will be exclusively available to buy from the Big Finish website until 31 January 2022, and on general sale after this date. An ancient artefact, a stone arch anachronistically imbedded with electronic circuitry, is recovered following a rupture in an undersea stretch of the Mull lava group in North West Scotland, a geological feature dating from tens of millions of years ago. UNIT's investigation will unlock a link to another world and bring them face to face with a new and powerful threat... 1.1 The Enemy Beyond by Andrew Smith In a UNIT facility beneath Edinburgh Castle, Kate and Osgood work to unlock the mystery of a stone arch discovered buried in a prehistoric rock formation. When the arch takes one of their number away to a strange, bleak world, it leads to an encounter with a Time Lord. One with multiple personalities. Soon the Eleven is loose on the streets of Edinburgh and plotting to seize the arch from UNIT by any means necessary. 1.2 Fire and Ice by John Dorney When Kate needs Harry Sullivan's help with a threat from the Eleven, she and Osgood travel to Australia to meet him. He's there with Naomi Cross, investigating footage of an apparent UFO crash that turned up on social media. They find themselves caught in the middle of a conflict between Ice Warriors. And one Ice Warrior isn't so icy - in fact, he's red hot. And getting hotter... 1.3 Eleven's Eleven by Lisa McMullin A series of jewel robberies in London and the Home Counties draws the attention of UNIT when it's discovered that some of the stolen gems are alien in origin. The robberies are the work of an organised criminal gang led by East End villain Ava Drake. But Ava has a new, ruthless partner. The Eleven has promised her riches, and for him the gems are a means to defeat UNIT and regain the arch. 1.4 The Curator's Gambit by Andrew Smith The arch is taken to the Under Gallery for safekeeping, under the protection of the Curator. The concluding episode of the Metebelis Two's three-part celebration of the Jon Pertwee centenary focusing on seasons 9 through 11. Ben explains how first reading Target novilisations made the actual viewing of the stories a bit anticlimatic. BBC productions values of the early 1970s could not compete with the vivid memories of an 8-year-old's imagination, Ingrid Pitt's costume in The Time Monster aside. Then the two do a deep dive into how Omega's guards are pronounced. Is it with a /g/ sound like with gar or a /j/ sound like with jar; on-the-fly research was done and sources were cited. A brief sidebar about the new action figures for Big Finish / Character Option, including Harry Sullivan. Were Ogrons the classic series Judoon? Why was the Master having a bit of laugh in Roger Delgado's final story? Did Mac Hulke not like Pertwee's usual outfits? These questions and more! Opening music is from Dudley Simpson's score for the Frontier in Space and closing music is from his score for Planet of the Spiders.

NEW TO WHO AND THE GENESIS OF THE DALEKSThe Place: ScotlandTime: The day Verity!’s Liz Miles joined New To WhoAfter over fifty years of futile discussion between fans, Steven thinks this is the perfected form that carries Doctor Who into eternity - the dreaded GENESIS OF THE DALEKS. Without feeling, conscience or pity, Steven is joined as ever by Dan and this time by the wonderful Liz Myles to travel back through time in an effort to totally deconstruct this terrible menace of the future. From Tom Baker’s first season as the Doctor, GENESIS OF THE DALEKS is rightly lauded as one of the very best Doctor Who stories ever made.Combining the great powers of script editor Robert Holmes, producer Philip Hinchcliffe, director David Maloney, and a script by inventor of the Daleks, Davros - err, Terry Nation, we also have one of the great TARDIS teams of all time in the form of travelling companions Sarah-Jane Smith and Harry Sullivan, played resplendently by the late and wonderful Elizabeth Sladen and Ian Marter.Fusing the still-heard echoes of World War II with aspects of moral philosophy and growing fears about scientific discoveries about the human genome, Genesis is a story of its time that remains as relevant today as it ever was.The cover of the original imprint of the 1976 Target novelisation for GENESIS OF THE DALEKS is used with the kind permission of Chris Achilleos. The novelisation is written by Sir Terrance Dicks. The audiobook is read by Tom Baker.Intro theme by Our Colin (2017). We're back on our irregular schedule with a postmodern twist! In this episode, we challenge that Harry Sullivan is, in fact, not an imbecile but an extremely worthy companion. With Adam still recovering from being sick and Brian being generally run down, to say nothing of the Doctor Who anniversary weekend and Chicago TARDIS and stuff..., your beloved Imbeciles are phoning with this week's episode. Recorded back in July of this very year(!), this was the one that set us on the path of nattering on about our beloved program. Granted, it's a bit, it squeaks a bit, and I think you can see a stagehand at one point. The Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane are joined in the TARDIS by UNIT's Medical Officer, Surg. Lieut. Harry Sullivan. Despite impressive credentials in science, Sullivan accidentally changes the ship's course and they land on a seemingly abandoned space station. It's classic 70s sci-fi -- Earth is uninhabitable. Samples of all organic life were sent into stasis in space until the Earth is safe for human life. But something got into the wiring . . . The Ark, and the Earth, need the Doctor, Sarah Jane and Harry to save it.
On this episode of GTW we cover Robot by saying hello to a new Doctor, how Sue feels about number four, why you never lock the Doctor, a judgement call on scientists haircuts, The Doctor tries to entertain with an old magic gag, Harry Sullivan helps the best he can, and Benton gets the promotion … Continue reading Going Through Who 4.12: Robot →
Coming to you a bit later than I'd planned (bad head cold + some Jessica Jones bingeing is a deadly combination for this podcaster, apparently), here is my episode discussion of the recent Zygon 2-parter. This was definitely one of my more personal episodes and certainly most political (which is admittedly odd to me), but then since the story was very political itself, I suppose it was somewhat hard to avoid? Oh, and this was also recorded before the recent Paris attacks, so any similarities to such discussions are entirely coincidental. In this episode, I discuss identity politics (especially when it comes to Osgood), Zygons in the closet (likely not what you think), the awesomeness that is Jenna Coleman and Peter Capaldi, and revisiting the classic 'Terror of the Zygons'. Also included is some Harry Sullivan love, random music interjections, gratuitous skating references, some podcasting shout-outs, and probably way more than you ever needed to know about how I punch my Queer Card. Also, many coughs were sacrificed to the cutting room floor, but I still managed to come off sounding quite a bit gravely again due to my sore throat. So, anyway, I hope you all will join me for my review and discussion of both 'The Zygon Invasion' and 'The Zygon Inversion'. And, as always, glad to have you all aboard. Enjoy the ride! Also: a brief discussion of the Capaldi era so far. Main Topic: Carnival of Monsters. With special guest host Holly B. of City of the Dead. Nothing New Series. Rebooting the show. Small things in small rooms. The New Pertwee Era. Metebelis III. Chickens. Adorable Katy. Reading Pertwee wrong. Self-awareness. Shirna and Vorg. Shirna is awesome. The Miniscope as television. Dishrags and Daleks. Holmes the vegetarian. Jo and the male gaze. "Nothing difficult, nothing political." Stage play. Parodies of the Third Doctor. Anti-immigration gray dudes. The obligatory Quentin Tarantino reference. Daniel was a bit bored by the politics. President Zarb. An extended conversation about bootleg copies of The Web Planet. Colonialism and racism. Ian Marter. Direction in the repeated sequences. Third Doctor/Jo vs. Twelfth Doctor/Clara. Jo as keeper of the sonic screwdriver. Comparing the Twelfth to other Doctors. Discussing Capaldi. We missed a week there. Sorry! Having some difficulties with podcast scheduling and editing. In any case, this week Shana and Daniel talk about two mindfuck episodes, The Mind Robber from the Second Doctor's run, and the God Complex from Series 6 of the new series. Also: Is Shana Daniel's spunky female companion? Tune in to find out. Show Notes Main Topic: The Mind Robber and The God Complex. Mind-fuckery. Is Shana Daniel's "spunky female companion?" Shana jumps into the gutter very early in the episode. The length of episodes in The Mind Robber. Daniel summarizes the story of The Mind Robber. The famous shot of Zoe's ass. "Sex pests." General kinds of enemies it's possible to send after the Doctor. Shana's feelings about Jame and Zoe. Sexualization of Zoe and her age. Zoe as the "new and improved Susan." Jamie's absence for a couple of episodes. The Doctor picking the wrong face (and being assisted in the correction by Zoe) as a revealing character moment. Back to Harry Sullivan and "old girl." Frazier Hines adding "Jamie-isms." Talkin' about the Karkus. Fetishy Rapunzel. We're on Tumblr too much. Admiring the Gulliver's Travels influence in the Mind Robber. Raiding the costume closet at the BBC. Daniel name-drops June Hudson like a boss. Summarizing the God Complex in a few sentences. The rich history of minotaurs in fiction. "The God Complex" makes Daniel's head hurt, and not in a good way. Not a Moffat-friendly podcast. Lazy writing. Daniel likes to surprise Shana with things on this podcast. Not wanting to revisit Moffat-era episodes. Rita as a great side character. Talking about Toby Whithouse, Being Human, and shallow characterization. Liking lots of stuff in The God Complex, but not much happens and there's a lot of padding. Pacing problems. Alien species as comic relief and make no sense otherwise. Shana thinks the God Complex is Not Scary. Personal fears as idiosyncratic choices. "The God Complex" as a sort of bottle episode. Perhaps the episode should have been a two-parter? Shoutout to the TARDIS Tavern. Talking about the ending. Rory could have solved the plot in ten seconds. The dying minotaur. Lots of sighing. Things we liked about The God Complex. Matt Smith's costume. A bit of confusing direction. Wrapping up.
Recorded all of two hours after Episode One, we were perhaps a bit too sleepy to really grapple with "Revenge of the Cybermen" and "Genesis of the Daleks," but no doubt we'll come back to these themes again and again. Lots of random douchiness from Harry Sullivan for those amused by such. Show Notes: Main topic: Genesis of the Daleks and Revenge of the Cybermen. Daniel plays a joke on Shana, because he's a dork. Recording a couple of hours after recording Episode 1. Talkin' about Harry Sullivan. Forgetting about Harry Sullivan. "Old Girl" and the snippiness of Harry Sullivan. The male "action hero" as a companion in Doctor Who. Daniel uses the word "fisticuffs" unironically. Perhaps even Ian Marter realized how useless Harry Sullivan was? Shana barely remembers Revenge of the Cybermen. The plottiness of RotC. Reconnecting wires and red veiny face things as plague effects. Bad science to motivate reasonable storytelling. Daniel is bored by sequences involving court politics. (At least) borderline racist makeup. Repeated tropes from the Pertwee era. The "runaround" as a Doctor Who trope. Shana's first yawn. The Doctor becomes a suicide bomber. What would Shana do to revise the RotC script? Daniel references Doctor Who: The Memory Cheats. Shana gives intro essay writing instructions. This podcast is no longer PG-13. Moving on to Genesis of the Daleks: the greatest episode ever? This episode as the epitome of Space Nazis in Who. Shana yawns a second time. What about Harry getting his foot stuck in a giant clam? The genius of Michael Wisher as Davros. Daniel uses an extremely mixed metaphor. Shana wants a Time Ring for herself. Daniel talks about how wonderful the Daleks are for about six hours and completely loses Shana's attention. Shana yawns a third time. How the various Doctors respond to alien menaces. Possibly sympathizing with Davros? Science used for evil again. The creepiness of Nyder. Davros's largely unexplained deformities. All the stuff we didn't even get around to talking about. Shana yawns a fourth time. How responsible was Terry Nation for Genesis of the Daleks? The captivating speechifying of Tom Baker, and the ethics of genocide. The Tom Baker era's relative lack of recurring villains. Shana yawns a fifth time. Then a sixth. (It's very late at this point.) Overuse of recurring villains, particularly the Master in the David Tennant run. A bit on the use of the Daleks in the twenty-first century. Talking about Genesis vs. Robot. Sarah Jane's camo outfit. Wrapping up. Ending with the final lines of "Genesis of the Daleks" as our quote.
In this first official episode of Oi! Spaceman: A Doctor Who Love Story, Shana and Daniel discuss Tom Baker's first three stories: Robot, The Ark in Space, and The Sontaran Experiment. Also discussed: Doctor Who: Legacy, Colin Baker's dickishness, the feminism of Sarah Jane, and much, much more. Show notes:Main topic: Robot, the Ark in Space, and The Sontaran Experiment. Doctor Who: Legacy. A bit on Colin Baker. Extra-legally-obtained episodes? Another little bit on William Hartnell's antepenultimate episode The Smugglers. Shana's physical attraction to the iconic Tom Baker. Everyone's love for Sarah Jane Smith. The Third Doctor Era and Benny Hill. First mention of Harry Sullivan and "old girl." Sarah Jane's investigative reporting instincts in "Robot." The Third Doctor as the prototypical "Scientist Doctor" versus the Scientific Reform Society. "Burninating." Doctor Who and Isaac Asimov? Sarah Jane as the everywoman. Previewing future episodes on Jo Grant and the Third Doctor. The Ark in Space: one of Daniel's all-time favorites -- Shana is skeptical. Daniel can't remember who wrote the Ark in Space and gets it totally wrong. The charm of re-using corridors. The joy of bubble-wrap monsters and lo-fidelity TV screens. Shana has no memory of the Wirn, but loves the character bits. Doctor Who as an anthology series. Standoff between the Wirn and the Doctor. The Doctor tweaking Sarah Jane's feminism: what do we think? Every episode with the word "Time" is bad, except for one, and Daniel can't remember it until he googles it: BAD FAN! Sontar-HA! Did the Sontaran Experiment exist on a far-future Earth or another planet? We're both Bad Fans. The Sontarans torture people off-screen, and Sarah Jane's outfit is adorable. Second mention of Harry Sullivan and "old girl." The Sontarans as Space Nazis. Questioning humanity through the lens of fictional alien species. Military red tape. Sontaran makeup issues. Harry Sullivan's incompetence. Third mention of "old girl." Tom Baker's injuries and comparing the action scenes of the Third and Fourth Doctors. Sarah Jane's empathy. Anti-climactic endings in Doctor Who. Shana prefers Robot to The Ark in Space. Laughing at the B-movieness of Robot. Podcasting at the speed of Google! Ending on the classic quote from The Ark in Space. Links: Tom Baker talks about his 50th Anniversary Experience.Daniel's Twitter: @danieleharperShana's Twitter: @inkyosa
Carnivaaaaal! Music! Dancing! Vibrant Colours! Cultural Diversity! Excitement! Sexy Costumes! Atmosphere! Wrong Carnival! Okay, I know it says Carnival of Monsters but a blurry cyberman, wet glove puppets, hastily applied bald caps and a crate of chickens isn't exactly Rio is it? But I suppose if you add the worst fairground attendants in the galaxy covering themselves in balls while the Doctor punches a man in the face, Jo is chased by a giant fork and Harry Sullivan has an argument with Mosschops, then maybe...... No. It still isn't Rio.
In tonight's episode we discuss Michael's family, Jeremy's love for Jo Grant, and the first Fourth Doctor story Robot. Flimsy robots dangle their arms, Benton and the Brig make an appearance, and we also give our two cents on Harry Sullivan and a most beloved Sarah Jane Smith.
"Harry Sullivan is an imbecile!" Harsh words perhaps but the salty surgeon did nearly kill the Doctor… twice. Yes, it's the 1975 space opera, Revenge of the Cybermen, in which our intrepid TARDIS team battle a slimy U-Boat commander, an emotional silver giant and a horde of mad blinged-up old women. The Doctor's narcoleptic, Harry's apoplectic and Sarah may well go septic so take the slow train with Jim and Martin and see whether all that glitters is gold.
The Fourth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, and Harry Sullivan find themselves on Skaro. The war between the Kaleds and the Thals reaches a turning point as a mad scientist sets his plans in motion.
