In this podcast, we pay tribute to the Mutual Broadcasting System. It was the fourth nationwide radio network to be established in the United States, after CBS, NBC, and the NBC Blue Network which later became ABC. Mutual was established in 1934 as a cooperative between WOR New York, WGN Chicago, WLW Cincinnati, and WXYZ in Detroit. The network was retired in 1999 after numerous ownership changes. During radio's golden age Mutual was was best known as the home of The Lone Ranger, Superman, and The Shadow, as well as Major League Baseball, the NFL, and college football. Because it didn't have a big budget like it's rivals, Mutual usually avoided airing expensive variety shows, and concentrated on crime, drama, game, music, news and talk programs. For example, you're going to hear, Nick Carter Master Detective from 1945. From 1946 the popular situation comedy Vic & Sade, plus Sherlock Homes starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. From 1947, the game show What Am I Offered, and the Barbara Welles Show with guest James Stewart. Finally, The Saint starring Vincent Price from 1949. More at http://krobcollection.com

Jean Shepherd was born on July 26th, 1921 on the South Side of Chicago to Jean and Anna Shepherd. He grew up in Hammond, Indiana, which according to Shep was a “tough and mean” industrial city. As an adolescent, Shepherd worked as a mail boy in a steel mill. He began his radio career at the age of sixteen, doing weekly sportscasts for WJOB in Hammond. That job led to juvenile roles on network radio in Chicago, including that of Billy Fairchild in the serial “Jack Armstrong, the All American Boy.” One of the programs that later came to symbolize Shepherd's childhood, thanks to his 1983 film A Christmas Story, was Red Ryder. During World War II, Shepherd served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, installing radar equipment and furthering a lifelong dislike for authority figures. After the war, he studied acting in Chicago at the Goodman Theatre and briefly engineering and psychology at Indiana University. He left Indiana without a degree to take a radio gig in Cincinnati, which led him to a series of radio jobs, each better than the previous. After working at WTOD in Toledo, Ohio, Shepherd spent the early 1950s at WSAI and WLW in Cincinnati, and had a late-night broadcast on KYW in Philadelphia. He moved to New York for WOR and debuted on February 26th, 1955. WOR is a fifty-thousand watt clear-channel AM station and was the flagship affiliate of the Mutual Broadcasting System. Mutual Broadcasting had formed on September 28th, 1934 as a cooperative of stations WOR New York, WGN Chicago, WXYZ Detroit, and WLW Cincinnati. The members shared telephone-line transmission facilities and agreed to collectively enter into contracts with advertisers for their network shows. After a deal with Don Lee's chain of west coast networks, Mutual went coast-to-coast on December 29th, 1936. The other major networks, ABC, CBS, and NBC, were corporations. When World War II ended, domestic manufacturing restrictions were lifted. TV became a focal point as the other networks pumped their radio profits into the new medium. Mutual's cooperative status meant it never had the resources to move into TV, although affiliates like WOR did run a local TV station in New York. Mutual remained a cooperative until 1952 when General Tire became the parent company. By 1955 radio was changing. Drama, which had dominated the dial for more than two decades, was on its way out due to both its and TV production costs. More and more network programming was being turned over to local affiliates. These local affiliates employed a new generation of hosts that had grown up with Jack Benny, Fred Allen, and other observant humorists. Shepherd's peers were Johnny Carson, Jack Paar, Rod Serling, and Steve Allen. Shepherd was working an overnight slot for WOR in 1956. Facing a lack of sponsorship, he was about to be fired when he did an unauthorized commercial for Sweetheart Soap who didn't sponsor his program. WOR immediately canned him. But, listeners complained in droves and Sweetheart actually offered to sponsor him. WOR immediately brought him back. The overnight slot allowed him to riff with little need for the kind of corporate oversight that faced daytime and primetime hosts. That year, during a discussion on how easy it was to manipulate the best-seller lists, Shepherd suggested that his listeners visit bookstores and ask for a copy of a fictional novel called I, Libertine by a Frederick R. Ewing. Fans of the show planted references so widely that there were claims it made The New York Times Best Seller list. It led to an actual book deal with Ballantine. Theodore Sturgeon wrote most of it with Shepherd's outline guiding him. Betty Ballantine finished the novel when Sturgeon fell asleep during a marathon writing session to meet the deadline. Famed illustrator Frank Kelly Freas did the cover art. The book was published on September 13th, 1956 with all proceeds going to charity.

Do you know that feeling of being stuck? You know, that feeling that you just can't seem to get out of your current situation?   Lia Garvin, the author of Unstuck: Reframe Your Thinking to Free Yourself from the Patterns and People That Hold You Back, talks about how you can use a reframing mindset to help conquer these challenges. Her book is all about helping overcome common challenges found in the modern workplace. And she knows it's not easy.   Lia herself worked two jobs while writing it. She shares how environmental stressors contribute to burnout, which can be disruptive and debilitating to life and work. She debunks the myth that reframing is looking on the bright side and changing the approach can change the outcome.   About Lia:  Lia is the author of UNSTUCK: Reframe Your Thinking to Free Yourself From the Patterns and People that Hold You Back, leaning into nearly 10 years of experience working in some of the largest and most influential companies in tech including Microsoft, Apple, and Google to explore the power of reframing to overcome common challenges found in the modern workplace. March 3, 1940 The Ozzie Nelson Orchestra performing from the Blackhawk Ballroom in Chicago over the Mutual Network, WGN Chicago. The Blackhawk was a restaurant in the Chicago Loop from 1920 to 1984. It served a menu of American cuisine, notably prime rib and a signature "spinning salad bowl," and was, in the early part of its history a nationally known entertainment venue for Big Band music. From 1930 through the 1940s, Nelson's band recorded prolifically—first on Brunswick (1930–1933), then Vocalion (1933–1934), then back to Brunswick (1934–1936), Bluebird (1937–1941), Victor (1941), and finally back to Bluebird (1941 through the 1940s). Nelson's records were consistently popular, and in 1934, Nelson enjoyed success with his hit song, "Over Somebody Else's Shoulder," which he introduced. Nelson's primary vocalist was Rose Anne Stevens, who appeared in the 1942 movie Down Rio Grande Way and Tomorrow We Live. Later in his big band career, Harriet Hilliard replaced Stevens and Harriet's perky vocals added to the band's popularity. Ozzie and Harriet married and went on to family sitcom history on radio and TV with their sons David and Rickie.----(WIKIPEDIA)

PDX Media Good Old Days

Joe Donlon is one of the eight, male main news anchors in the history of KGW-TV (Richard Ross, John North, Ralph Wenge, Bill Lagatutta, Pete Schulberg, Steve Abrams, Jim Benneman-- only one of them was jerk, and I never met Ross, or North. I have no idea who the current main, male anchor is at KGW. The main women anchors over time have been Robin Chapman, Kathy Smith, Tracy Barry, Carol Jensen, and Laurel Porter-- They were all very nice.) BACK TO JOE. He was a stellar news anchor and newsroom leader for 21 years. He's also a wonderful guy to be around. He could have eased into retirement after a few more years KGW, but took on a huge challenge in 2018, moving to WGN Chicago to anchor its flagship newscast, and now Joe is helping the corporation start a new, national cable news network—News Nation. He was the obvious choice to host of “The Donlon Report” there nightly. Friend of the show Rod Pyle returns to discuss his latest book, and all things Apollo with Beth AND… Receiving the foreword from Buzz Aldrin himself! Rod’s impressions and insights from speaking with the Apollo 11 astronauts’ children (now grown adults) Combing through the NASA archives to find incredible, never before shared documents, photos and stories from the Apollo era And what the future of space can be, returning to the Moon, on to Mars, and beyond…   Quotes from Rod here: “You get the sense of an eternal restlessness with Buzz (Aldrin)… he demands that we move further and faster and beyond in space exploration, and he has not stopped thinking about that since the day he returned.” “One thing that always impressed me from my years of training at the Johnson Space Center, I would walk along the Saturn V rocket, and share the experience with several executives who would start crying because it’s such a powerful experience as you walk from one end to the other, where you see what a massive accomplishment it all was…and I take them to the top of the rocket and explain that ‘all this is just to get the astronauts to the moon,’ and they are astonished.” “What I always try to do in my books is to both give the quotes of numbers, details about the missions, how many pounds of thrust the Saturn V rocket uses, etc., but that’s not speaking to our hearts, and that’s the conversation we need to have with people. The last time I saw this done well was when Elon Musk launched his Tesla from a Falcon Heavy into space, looking back on the Earth.” “On Apollo 12, Pete Conrad and Allan Bean were very serious and they were setting down the LEM, and there was this easy banter between two brothers sharing a common goal and landing right on target.  He (Conrad) came down right on the money, and when they landed, it was like party time inside the LEM, they were slapping each other’s backs and it like listening to the “Throughout the [Apollo12] moonwalks, and there were two (Pete Conrad and Allan Bean), they were so overjoyed not just to be there and to be there on the moon, but to be in each other’s company; there was this warmth, and this joy, this kind of excitement and this almost child-like thrill.”   About Rod Pyle: Rod Pyle is a space author, journalist and historian who has authored 15 books on space history, exploration and development for major publishers that have been released in ten languages. He is the Editor-in-Chief for the National Space Society’s quarterly print magazine Ad Astra, and his frequent articles have appeared in Space.com, LiveScience, Futurity, Huffington Post, Popular Science, Caltech’s E&S magazine, and WIRED. He has written extensively for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Caltech, including Technology Highlights for NASA’S Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Rod co-authored and lectured for the Apollo Executive Leadership Program for NASA’s Johnson Space Center and The Conference Board.  New book releases for 2019 include Space 2.0 (with a foreword by Buzz Aldrin), Interplanetary Robots, Heroes of the Space Age, and First on the Moon (also with a foreword by Aldrin), which is currently in its fifth printing. Rod’s previous Apollo books Missions to the Moon (foreword by Gene Kranz) and Destination Moon are being republished for 2019.   Rod appears on national radio and television, with regular slots on KFI/Los Angeles, and WGN/Chicago (both market leaders), as well as popular podcasts and radio in numerous other markets. Rod hosts a podcast called Cool Space News on iHeart Radio, and appears on PBS’s Between the Lines and C-SPAN’s Book TV regularly. He holds an MA from Stanford University and a BFA from the Art Center College of Design, and lives in Alhambra, California.     Where to find Rod Pyle: Ad Astra: https://space.nss.org/ad-astra-the-magazine-of-the-national-space-society/ Cool Space News Podcast: https://kfiam640.iheart.com/content/2019-07-12-cool-space-news-with-rod-pyle/ First on the Moon: https://www.amazon.com/First-Moon-Apollo-Anniversary-Experience/dp/1454931973

Strangely enough, I connected with Montgomery County to work in the Victim Assistance Program. I was on the air at WGAY on a Sunday morning. . . I picked up this card and the card said, 'Volunteers needed for the Victims Assistance Sexual Assault Program of Montgomery County.' . . . put that one in my pocket. The next day I called the number on the card . . ." John Lyon, Retired Announcer and WMAL Swingman, and host Andy Ockershausen in-studio interview Andy Ockershausen: This is Our Town. This Andy Ockershausen, and what a pleasure and what an extreme, extreme happiness for Janice and I to be with the original WMAL Swingman. We call him The Swingman 'cause he could swing on every show on WMAL. John Lyon, welcome to Our Town. John Lyon: Thank you very much. I've been looking forward to this. Andy Ockershausen: I first remember that people said, "It's not Lyons." John Lyon: That's right. Andy Ockershausen: John Lyon, and when he came . . . I was at WMAL. I'd been there so long I was part of the furniture or the fixtures. When John first came as a young man, but he left as an old man, but he never really left. I'm sure he's got WMAL in his heart. John Lyon: Oh sure. Sure. Andy Ockershausen: Like we all do, John. Channel 7 - Lyon's First Audition in DC John Lyon: It's ... I came here in 1967. Auditioned after three years at a station in Peoria, CBS station there. The odd thing about that was the guy that I replaced in Peoria was the same guy I replaced here. I'd been there three years and I said to the boss ... His name was Bob Beneke, I don't know if you remember. Andy Ockershausen: I remember the name. John Lyon: Bob Beneke. When he left here, he got out of the business. He went into some financial dealings and stuff. Andy Ockershausen: Well, you were hired as an announcer, correct? John Lyon: I was hired- Andy Ockershausen: Not as a talent and not as a performer but an announcer? John Lyon: I'm not sure now. Andy Ockershausen: Well ... That's where ... Jack Weaver and Frank started as announcers on WMAL. John Lyon: Yeah. We had a TV audition, Channel 7 audition and Frank Ford maybe- Andy Ockershausen: Absolutely. John Lyon: Was the Director- Andy Ockershausen: He's our guy. John Lyon: It was me and like six other guys for this audition and I had to borrow some dough to come out here. I had to borrow money to come out here. I had four kids back in Peoria, that I said to the boss, "Look, I've been here two or three years now. I'm kind of getting to the end of the scale, you know?" I said, "Is there any chance you can give me some more dough?" "No, that's it," he said, "You've come to the end of the road." He said, "That's how we kind of do it here. We're a medium-sized market." Andy Ockershausen: It's a market price. John Lyon: We got a chance to do a lot of stuff there. Did TV, nighttime radio program, and he says ... I said, "Well, okay. I'll be honest with you. I'm gonna start looking for work." He says, "Okay, good luck." I put audition tapes out to all the stations where I thought I could fit in, mainly in the Midwest 'cause that's where I was. Andy Ockershausen: Sure. John Lyon: I went to WGN Chicago, WCCO Minneapolis - Andy Ockershausen: Powerhouse. Fate? - Lyon Intended to Work in Midwest, DC Never Crossed His Mind John Lyon: KMOX St. Louis, WOW Cincinnati, 'cause I thought, "I know these stations and I think I could work there." Well, I didn't hear anything from any of 'em. Somehow a tape ended up out here in Washington, D.C. I had no idea where Washington D.C. was. I said, "Point to the east and keep going." That's what I did and I think it was Harold Green called me and he said, "We're gonna have auditions", on whatever the date was. I said, "I'll be there." I made arrangements and I went and got a few bucks together and came out...

Stacey comes from a humble background and her goal was never to start her own business. Out of college she landed some big jobs and found herself training on a wide variety of topics and she noticed something very important. It doesn’t matter how smart you are if you don’t have the ability to communicate a message that someone understands. Body language became a major focus of Stacey’s when she started to wonder how we can execute a behaviour without really knowing we’re doing it. How can we feel different when we are communicating from the way everyone around us experiences? The experience your internal and external clients have with you determines the amount of money in your pocket. Stacey was very fortunate to be part of an association that hired speakers and she really liked how they engaged and impacted people. She was the host for many of these events, and this lead to Stacey honing her skills and becoming sought after as a speaker herself.   Where did you get the courage to make it happen? Stacey had the mentality of not wanting to look back and wonder what might have happened. She also always had her Starbucks back up plan to fall back on. How long are you going to sit and try to figure it out? Stacey gave herself a year to get her business off the ground, without a date in the calendar every day becomes someday. If it doesn’t get scheduled it doesn’t get done. How Clients Experience You We all get to choose the reputation that we want to create for ourselves everyday. Are you prepared? Do you come across that you want to be there? To you believe what you say? Does your body language match what you’re saying? Most of the time feedback is flawed. You choose how you show up. Your tone of voice and the words you use need to be a focus no matter how experienced you are if you want to create a reputation you can be proud of. Influence Everyone defines influence differently, you just have to be clear about your definition. Influence does not mean you can turn it on and turn it off. Influence is consistent every day of the week. Influence means you have the ability to get people to take action long after the interaction has occurred. Influe

Matt Sapaula, is a financial coach with the goal of redefining his clients' future by giving them the information, tools and guidance they need to take charge of their finances and create a better life. For over a decade he has proactively educated the community in financial strategies, helped clients identify hidden assets and encourages his audience to turn missed opportunities into second chances.Matt began his career in the financial services industry by working at a large brokerage firm in southern California in transition from active-duty service in the United States Marine Corps. In the Marines, Matt's dedication to his country, his unit, and his duties propelled him to become a decorated military veteran while serving in Somalia, Africa, through Asia and the Persian Gulf. This time also gave him the values, discipline and drive that he brings to the financial services industry.Julie Bombacino understands the needs and concerns of the caretakers and customers she serves.Bombacino, founder and CEO of Just Food Blends, can say she has truly walked in their shoes. Her understanding arises from her personal life experience. An experience, Bombacino says, that motivated her to use her abilities to research and develop a feeding tube product completely made from real food.“My six-month-old son AJ was put on a feeding tube for a few months and had failed on eight different types of formula, despite having no food allergies,” Bombacino says. She experimented with blended real food as a substitute for the formula.“Real food made such a difference in his life and to our entire family,” Bombacino says. “I went searching for a convenient 100 percent real food meal I could feed him when we were traveling, or if I just didn't feel like cooking for him, and couldn't find one.”Thus an idea was born!
