This episode contains content that may be sensitive to some listeners. Please check the show notes for more detailed descriptions. “I believe that if we could all be more in touch with our feelings, we will live a mentally healthier life.” My guest today is Archie Messersmith-Bunting, AKA “The Feelings Guy” and “ArchieCares.” This is someone who wears his heart on his sleeve. When he's speaking about mental health to schools and corporations, he's not afraid to talk about tough issues like drug addiction, mental illness, and suicide. That's because he has personal experience with all three. After you hear what Archie had to say in our conversation, you'll understand why there's so much power in being vulnerable. There's no point trying to pretend you're okay when you're not. You'll end up finding unhealthy ways to deal with the pain. Take Archie's advice to heart. He went from numbing his feelings to allowing himself to feel them – and you can, too. Archie shared many things in this episode: (5:54) Archie's story of growing up as a closeted gay person, using drugs to numb painful emotions (8:55) “For me, life was just spiraling.” Archie opens up about how he hit rock bottom with his drug addiction and became suicidal, then found a path to recovery (12:03) Why it's a mistake to hide your mental health struggles because you “don't want to burden anyone” with your problems (23:40) How Archie practices self-care as someone who constantly pours energy into helping others with difficult issues (27:33) Archie explains why vulnerability is so powerful, especially when it comes to men  (32:38) The big change Archie is seeing in the way corporations approach employee mental health (34:07) Going from “what if” to “what is”: How Archie deals with moments full of anxiety and stress (36:45) Archie mentions that some people, himself included, use humor in response to stressful situations – which isn't always a good idea What feelings are you running away from? Archie is proof that there's no shame in expressing your feelings and getting help for your mental health. I hope you gain a lot from this powerful episode. Archie Messersmith-Bunting is known as 'The Feelings Guy.' He is a mental wellness professional speaker who helps people discover how leading with their feelings can improve their quality of life and save the lives of those they come in contact with.Archie's passion stems from his personal life experience. He was adopted at a young age and grew up in a religious setting where ‘pray the gay away' was the cultural norm. In fact, he spent much of his high school and college careers trying to de-gay himself. Eventually addiction and clinical depression led him to a place where he believed suicide was his only answer. After battling back from the jaws of addiction and embracing his gay, Archie now uses his voice to remind others that we are all more than "just” the wreckage of our past. He teaches that individual moments and decisions in our life do not define us, but they can help design us.Episode ResourcesThe Atlantic | The Pandemic Did Not Affect Mental Health the Way You ThinkConnect with ArchieArchie's Website | www.archiecares.comNew Podcast |What a FeelingInstagram | @archie_caresConnect The Courage to ChangePodcast Website | lionrock.life/couragetochangepodcastPodcast Instagram | @couragetochange_podcastPodcast Facebook | @thecouragetochangepodcastPodcast Email | podcast@lionrock.lifeLionrock ResourcesCoffee & Coffee Alternatives | lionrock.life/shop-productsSupport Group Meeting Schedule | lionrock.life/meetings

This week I got to kick it in the booth with Archie Messersmith-Bunting, aka The Feelings Guy™ and we got DEEP. Before diving into conversations about mental health, drug abuse, singing on Broadway, and an experience of being bucked into the waters of Antarctica – we talked about Archie's hometown in Alabama which is where all of the unclaimed baggage from airplanes goes… to a place, cleverly named Unclaimed Baggage. While talking about Alabama, Archie told us about his traumatic experience growing up gay in the deep south, he then shared about his move to New York, his experience with drug abuse, and the powerful experience of meeting a sponsor and a therapist that normalized his mental illness. He's on a mission to create space for feelings of all kinds and to normalize mental health for the masses. Archie holds so much power in his story, and we created a conversation that will stick with you long into the future. You aren't going to want to miss this episode!    About the Guest:  Archie Messersmith-Bunting, M.S., The Feelings Guy™, is a mental wellness coach, consultant, and professional speaker who helps people discover how leading with their feelings can improve their quality of life and save the lives of those they come in contact with. Archie was a successful musical theater performer in New York City before addiction and clinical depression destroyed his childhood dream and led him to a place where he believed suicide was his only answer. After battling back from the jaws of addiction, Archie now uses his voice to remind others that we are all more than "just" the wreckage of our past. Here's a somewhat stuffy bio of me:   I am an author, professional speaker, coach, host, and entrepreneur. My first book, Leading Imperfectly: The value of being authentic for leaders, professionals, and human beings, is available wherever people buy books. I speak internationally to willing and unwilling attendees about authenticity, vulnerability, and leadership. My clients include American Express, General Electric (GE), Accenture, Yale University, The Ohio State University, and many others. As a speaker, I am doing the two things I loves the most: making people think and making people laugh!  I host my own events multiple times a year. They are 2-day events called Living Imperfectly Live (and sometimes they are 1-day virtual events). They are a space where humans from every walk of life can come together to be part of a community on the pursuit of badassery. The goal is to help attendees start living the life we say we want to live. Alas, you're here because of an idea I had a number of years ago and didn't think I was good enough to pull it off. I finally acted on it and alas Diner Talks with James was born! As you can see from what I do in my professional life, Diner Talks is aligned with everything I believe in and teach. If this wasn't dry enough, and you would like to know more info about my speaking, events, or coaching feel free to check out my website: JamesTRobo.com.   Let's Be Friends on Social Media! We can spend years reading the self help books. We can intellectually understand all the events of our life that have blocked us as fully and vibrantly as we want. But we stay in the place of intellectualizing. We understand, but we never embody a new way of being. This week's guest is going to get you out of your head and back into your heart. That's where you can bring change into your life. Archie Messersmith-Bunting is The Feelings Guy. He's a mental wellness coach, consultant and professional speaker. In his former life, he was a successful musical theatre performer on Broadway before addiction and clinical depression destroyed his childhood dream and led him to a place where suicide seemed like the only option. After battling back from the jaws of addiction, Archie now uses the stage to remind us that we're all more than the wreckage of our past. Some of the topics covered include: How unresolved childhood trauma and drug use led Archie to a downward spiral that cost him his dream career, but how he also bounced back from it. The night he died in a hospital and why Grey's Anatomy has been lying to us for the last 20 years. How you can't get better until you get honest with yourself. How trauma is healed in safe connection with other people. How our suffering doesn't make us special. The importance of taking personal responsibility for your life. Episode 21 is here and this week the boys get into ALL the feels as they sit down with the one and only Archie Messersmith-Bunting, the infamous Feelings Guy (aka @archie_cares). Today's convo? It's all about self-care, battling that negative self-talk, and how to support your people when they're struggling most. Giving Archie a rating of 10 out of 10, today's ep is unquestionably Josh's favorite to date—and honestly we don't disagree. Be ready to conquer all that negativity people, ‘cause it's time to go IN. Guest bio: Archie Messersmith-Bunting, M.S., The Feelings Guy™, is a mental wellness coach, consultant, and professional speaker who helps people discover how leading with their feelings can improve their quality of life and save the lives of those they come in contact with. Archie was a successful musical theater performer in New York City before addiction and clinical depression destroyed his childhood dream and led him to a place where he believed suicide was his only answer. After battling back from the jaws of addiction, Archie now uses the stages he graces to remind others that we are all more than "just" the wreckage of our past. He uses his voice to share with audiences that individual moments and decisions in our life do not define us, but they can help design us. Today's episode covers everything from: Archie's story and how he became “The Feelings Guy" Reframing: challenging people to ask “How are you feeling?” rather than “How are you doing?” Other small reframes that can have a big impact and make all the difference How we as humans assign meaning to our feelings and can actively choose how they're perceived Identifying the meaning you're assigning to feelings and not allowing them to have control Being conscious of how you're talking to yourself Changing the negative things you tell your brain Be gentle with yourself and learn how to reframe the negative Easing into meditation Coping mechanisms for negative self-talk Starting the day with morning intentions and ending the day reflecting on gratitude Follow / Contact On Instagram! @travishawkesmedia @joshlevinefitness @archie_cares Watch The Video Pod On Youtube! - Youtube Channel

In this episode I speak with professional speaker Archie Messersmith-Bunting about his experiences of and recovery from suicidality, major mental-illness and substance abuse. Adopted at the age of 2 into a highly religious community, Archie struggled to accept and acknowledge his sexuality. A single decision one evening to take drugs for the first time led him into a downward spiral. His story is a very human and moving account of what it takes to really get to grips with your difficulties, and the steps needed to move forward. Archie embodies hope through speaking at college campuses and corporate groups about the importance of feelings - the one focus Archie felt was missing from many of the treatment options offered during his process of recovery.Oh and the other aspect of Archie's story that is unique, was the pivotal role his dog played in all of this. You can connect with Archie and follow his work here: https://www.archiecares.com/

We've heard it said, “There's no ‘I' in Team!” But when did being a good leader mean putting yourself last? Effective leadership does not mean losing personally. In fact, I believe that the best leaders prioritize themselves and their own wellbeing. Business owners, whether we are a business of one who is trying to support our families or our fur-babies or we have 100s of employees, we have GOT to start putting our mental health first - period. Archie Messersmith-Bunting, M.S., The Feelings Guy™, is a mental wellness coach, consultant, and professional speaker who helps people discover how leading with their feelings can improve their quality of life and save the lives of those they come in contact with. Summary:Today's chat is with The Feelings Guy™, Archie Messersmith-Bunting, who helps us understand that everyone grieves and that grief is the reaction to a loss, whether related to the death of a loved one or to the death of our dreams. Episode Notes:COVID has impacted everyone. We have lost our routines and most of our social enjoyment, though we have adapted as necessary to restrictions. Still, when someone asks how we are, “fine” is the popular response. We are not “fine.” We are grieving. This episode contains numerous nuggets that will help you understand how grief affects each of us. Yet in this conversation, we comfortably discuss grief and even laugh. You will, too. Using dynamism and authenticity, Archie champions mental health awareness worldwide at corporations and universities. He challenges people to rethink complicated and emotional topics like depression, suicide, alcohol and drug addiction. Through his company ArchieCares, LLC, he aims to reframe the narrative surrounding mental illness and addiction by facilitating honest and vulnerable conversations. He has provided leadership, mental health and alcohol & drug prevention education at corporations like Solenis and The Job Sauce, and college campuses including Clemson University, Iowa State University and The University of Southern California. Archie reaches individuals personally as he openly and honestly shares his own struggle with addiction and clinical depression. He weaves research of top therapists and addiction specialists into his storytelling, allowing audiences to understand the potential for loss and pain.
