Invoking ancestry, magic, and a deep relationship with the Dead, this week's guest Perdita Finn invites listeners into a world of mystery. Perdita's work, including her new book Take Back the Magic: Conversations with the Unseen World, calls humanity to engage with a faith in the unseen world, a faith in surrender, and a faith in the other side. For Perdita, this faith is not rooted in an otherworldly abstract idea of spirituality, but rather a grounded, embodied experience. As we come to face the existential questions of our time – war, climate change, and disasters of all kinds – Perdita reminds us that we are not alone. We can lean on our ancestors, both human and more-than-human, for strength. As we live into the long story of our souls, what wisdom can we pull from lives beyond this one? Tapping into creativity, resilience and connectedness, life comes after life, comes after life, and the meaning of our cyclical lineage is ever-present.   Perdita Finn is the co-founder, with her husband Clark Strand, of the non-denominational international fellowship The Way of the Rose, which inspired their book The Way of the Rose: The Radical Path of the Divine Feminine Hidden in the Rosary. In addition to extensive study with Zen masters, priests, and healers, she apprenticed with the psychic Susan Saxman, with whom she wrote The Reluctant Psychic. Finn now teaches popular workshops on Getting to Know the Dead, in which participants are empowered to activate the magic in their own lives with the help of their ancestors. She is the author of Take Back the Magic: Conversations with the Unseen World and lives with her family in the moss-filled shadows of the Catskill Mountains. For an extended version of this episode please join us on Patreon at patreon.com/forthewildMusic by The New Runes, Left Vessel, Eliza Edens, and Arthur Moon. Some of the best moments in music are the ones that defy expectations, breaking from conventional "rules" in pursuit of something unique or unpredictable. These are often the instances that catch our ears, leaving us wondering what just happened and how those artists got away with something you just don't do.That irregular something can be an abnormal chord progression, an unanticipated instrument choice, or a way of using an effect with little or no precedent. Of course, the quest to break free from mediocrity and presumption can sometimes result in work that is somewhat polarizing, but there's a lot to admire about an artist, writer, or producer who took that chance. For this episode, we sat down with favorite-of-the-show, Martin Fowler and the astounding artist, Lora-Faye Åshuvud (of Arthur Moon) to celebrate some tracks that take risks and color outside the lines.Themes and Variation is presented by Soundfly, a music education website changing the way we build our creative skills :Check out all of our courses including Kimbra: Vocal Creativity, Arranging, & Production here.Subscribe to all of our courses here and use the discount code THEMES to take 20% off!Sign up to work one-on-one with one of our incredible mentors here.We want to hear the songs that made you want to study music! We had the pleasure of interviewing Arthur Moon over Zoom video! Arthur Moon - the Brooklyn avant-pop group fronted by Lora-Faye Åshuvud alongside collaborators Cale Hawkins (Quincy Jones, Bilal, Linda Perry), Martin D. Fowler (a composer for This American Life), Dave Palazola and Aviva Jaye - shared a surreal dreamlike new single, “Chaos! Chaos! Chaos!” The cool slice of electropop is also the title of their just-announced new album, out this fall - which will accompany a hometown Brooklyn show at Elsewhere Zone 1 on September 29 (tickets here). Directed by Garrett Weinholtz, the haunting video features spellbinding idiosyncratic dance moves to match with Lora-Faye Åshuvud and partner Jordan Kisner. Weinholtz explains: “This video started with Lora-Faye telling me she saw herself dancing with a solo audience member to ‘Chaos! Chaos! Chaos!' which also played into the realities of live music during Covid. From there, I took cues from David Lynch's ‘Mulholland Dr.', ‘Twin Peaks', Anna Biller's ‘The Love Witch', a bit of Lucio Fulci's ‘City of the Living Dead,' and the painting ‘Garden of Earthly Delights' to create a mix of kitsch and chaos.” Åshuvud continues: "Chaos! Chaos! Chaos! is a queer date wandering through New York as it burns, a new love growing up in the ruins of an old one, a debauched night walk across a scorched earth. We started the instrumental on this one in the summer of 2019, and then it sat untouched on my hard drive for a year until I reopened it again last summer. Hearing it for the first time in all those months, I was captivated by its swampy energy, and immediately heard these thick, tickling vocal harmonies that would float on top of the instrumental, never quite resolving, always wanting more. Initially it was called 'Hieronymous Bosch,' for context, but we ended up changing it to the title track of the album, because writing this song was a moment that really solidified for me what the album would end up being about - a chaos theory of pain and love, our deep connections and their utter incoherence."Arthur Moon is the moniker of Lora-Faye Åshuvud, a multi-instrumentalist from New York. Åshuvud takes an intuitive and unusual approach to rhythm and harmony, queering pop, electronic, and experimental sensibilities to make music that is as unpredictable and playful as it is intricate and controlled. NPR's Bob Boilen says Arthur Moon "has the quirky freshness I first heard from New York artists such as Laurie Anderson and Talking Heads in the late 1970s and more recently with Dirty Projectors."  Åshuvud collaborates on the Arthur Moon project with musicians like Cale Hawkins (Quincy Jones, Bilal, Linda Perry), Martin D. Fowler (a composer for This American Life), Dave Palazola and Aviva Jaye. The 2019 debut full-length Arthur Moon was met with support from the likes of NPR, BBC Radio 6, Spotify's New Music Friday, Billboard and more. Arthur Moon's next full-length is forthcoming later this year.We want to hear from you! THE BUREAU of LINGUISTICAL REALITY on Seeding New Language /138

Places with the richest biodiversity are also home to the greatest diversity of languages left in the world. As these remaining sanctuaries come under threat from climate disaster and resource expansion, we risk losing Indigenous languages that are alive and attuned to their homelands, and contain unparalleled ecological knowledge essential to healing the earth. Meanwhile, for those of us who learned to speak a dominant language like English, our tongues carry the legacy of colonialism, the stripping of the land, and we are constrained within a monocultural worldview of culture and land. How are we to express our grief at witnessing the loss unfolding amidst the Anthropocene, when we lack the words to begin with? Our guests this week are Heidi Quante and Alicia Escott from The Bureau of Linguistical Reality, a public participatory artwork that inspires individuals to create new words to understand and articulate the sensations of living within our rapidly changing world. Heidi and Alicia open the doors to freeing trapped sensations and emotions that have gone unnamed and unfelt under the weight of climate disaster. Heidi Quanta was raised speaking three languages simultaneously and as a result, has long been fascinated with how words influence peoples’ thoughts, actions and ultimately culture. Creating new words is something she loves doing and has been doing since she first learned to communicate with other humans. (Adult reprisals of “That’s not a word” didn’t stop her when she was 5 years old, nor does it today). Quante was inspired to create this artwork with Alicia Escott because she was at a loss for words to describe the very real emotions, and feelings she found herself experiencing as our world rapidly changes due to social, political and environmental factors. Quante’s passion as an artist and founder of the non-profit Creative Catalysts is finding innovative approaches to inspiring cultures to address the pressing social and environmental challenges of our time. This passion is a continuation of 17 years of designing and running a wide array of environmental and human rights initiatives. Quante received a Bachelor of Science & Bachelor of the Arts in Cultural Anthropology from the University of California Berkeley. Alicia Escott’s artistic thinking focuses on grappling with what it is to live a human life amid a moment that is profoundly rare in the geologic and ecologic history of the planet. She is interested in how we each are negotiating our immediate day-to-day realities and responsibilities amid an awareness of the overarching specter of climate change, mass extinction and other Anthropocenic events. She approaches these issues with an interstitial practice that encompasses writing, drawing, painting, photography, video, sculpture and social practice. Escott holds an MFA from California College of Art, where she received the Richard K. Price Scholarship in painting and a BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago. In this refreshing interview, Heidi, Alicia and Ayana break through the limits imposed by dominant languages, and invite radical freedom of expression to enrich our unique identities, experiences, our relationships with each other and with the earth. Listen in as we meditate on the necessity to revitalize Indigenous languages, reawaken the joys of wordplay, celebrate the creativity of youth, and to empower ourselves by rewilding our vocabulary. We are reminded of the need to speak the truth in every circumstance, and to imagine the world we wish to create. Original Research: Madison Magalski ♫ Music by Arthur Moon
