Nick has another Tales from the Concert. Furious Bongos, featuring Chad Wackerman on drums, came to Hagerstown last week to perform Frank Zappa's music and they did not disappoint.Song: Furious Bongos - “Black Page #2”Wayan Zoey is back to sub for Greg this week. He heard about Nick & Jay's recent experience seeing DOOM GONG and wanted to relay how there subsequent show in NYC went. Needless to say, the band had a less than optimal experience with a venue.Song: SML - “Chicago Four”Jay is excited to have our guest host this week because he's recently caught the Phish bug and has a lot of questions he needs answered. Wayan is a lifelong Phish fan and completely up on the band's lore. It's time for a Phish Q&A.Clip: Phish - Live in Saratoga, NY 7/25/25

The Fanzine Podcast is back after an unintentionally long absence to talk with Howard Wuelfing, editor/publisher of two key Washington D.C. zines, which have just been gathered into an eponymous anthology: Descenes and Discords. These influential zines, the first focused on local activities, its successor intended to gather additional material about the national alternative/underground scene, ran between 1979 and 1981 and served not only to influence and impact upon music in D.C., but provided publication space for a number of writers who would go on to national prominence, among them Gerard Cosloy and Byron Coley. In this episode, Howard discusses abandoning plans to become a lawyer to focus on becoming a rock writer instead, how exposure to CBGB's but especially the publication New York Rocker set him and his partners on their way with Descenes, how they were able to access typesetting, advertising and printing, and their successful game plan for distribution, but how the careerism of local “new wave” bands caused the team to pack it in after six issues. Embarking eight months later with Discords, the new look monthly zine had a winning run of cover artists (from Pylon to Circle Jerks to The Bongos and Mission Of Burma) and provided space and encouragement for the younger generation of hardcore bands who would soon step into the space Discords helped create. Accordingly, Ian MacKaye of Teen Idols, Minor Threat, Fugazi and Dischord (no relation) Records, was interviewed by Howard for a special reflection article that opens the new anthology.Descenes and Discords: An Anthology is available from DiWulf.com in the Americas, and EarthIslandBooks.com in Europe. Tesla's Cybertruck has sparked some interesting debates around aesthetics and utility versus novelty, but the U.S. military just wants a few of them to blow up.The Air Force Test Center submitted a procurement request for 33 towable target vehicles to be used as targets for live missile fire testing. The request mostly focuses on sedans of various colors, trucks, SUVs and “Bongos,” which appears to be the term they used for a Japanese Kei truck. But the list mentions the Cybertruck specifically, noting that the vehicle could appeal to enemies since they don't seem to take the same amount of damage expected upon major impact.

"Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. We have legendary artist Richard Barone on the show this week. He started his music career at age seven – yes, seven! - as a DJ at a local radio station in Florida and went on to form The Bongos in the early 80s in Hoboken, New Jersey. The Bongos were one of the foundational bands of indie pop and went on to record three well received records. In 1987, he released a solo record called "Cool Blue Halo" that became one of the first chamber pop records out there and went on to influence a generation of artists. He's also written two books -Frontman and Music + Revolution: Greenwich Village in the 1960s and has just released a live record from 1985 with The Bongos titled The Shroud of Touring: Live in 1985. But today, he tells us a story about of his first mentors – none other than Tiny Tim. Music credits: "Flagger" and "Enter the Room" from Blue Dot Sessions. Buy The Bongos' new live record, "The Shroud of Touring" here. Richard's web site Richard's tour dates and link for tickets is here. Be sure to look out for my books, "Lived Through That" and "80s Redux" where ever you buy your books! You can find out more about my work and the 80s and 90s books at my website here. We've got Sammy Arriaga on this week's brand new episode of Stories Behind the Songs! I've known Sammy for over 10 years, and it was such a good time to catch up with him today. Sammy and I talk about his 2021 album release, Boots x Beats, which features songs like “COUNTRY SIDE” and “take my phone.” Sammy goes into how the Miami music scene he was raised in with heavy R&B and EDM influences meshed with the storytelling of country music to create the unique sound he has today. We dive into his recent single, “The Boat”, which he shares the story behind and plays a verse/ chorus of. Sammy plays several other songs including “COUNTRY SIDE,” one of his popular Spanish covers, and a fan-favorite unreleased track. In this week's episode, we also discuss 615 House, his recent tour of the U.K. with fellow rising country artist, Gareth, how to maintain artistic integrity while also writing for sound bites and short attention spans (using the example of Ella Langley and Riley Green's smash hit, “you look like you love me”), how the title of his 2016 EP, Banjos ‘n' Bongos, doubles as his motto as an artist, and the amazing advice he would give to his younger self - to lead with humanity over ambition as a songwriter. If you enjoyed this week's episode, make sure to share it with your friends and give us a follow. It's our passion to share the Stories Behind the Songs, and it's because of listeners like you that we are able to continue doing it. It was great sitting down with Sammy - enjoy! Included in the bedrock of the American alternative rock sound created by bands like REM, the Feelies, the Bongos and the Replacements is the dB's. Their debut album, Stands for Decibels, is essential to showing what us Yanks were up to while New Wave and Post Punk were gestating largely in the UK. That seminal album was just re-released on vinyl for the first time last month and Peter Holsapple joined us to deep dive the whole experience like how he and former guest Chris Stamey split up the songwriting, what influenced the sound, how was it working with Martin Rushent and (another former guest) Don Dixon, trying to break out of North Carolina, and more. The alternative rock band Guster, formed over bongos and acoustic guitars at Tufts University in 1991, has built its reputation on their striking vocal harmonies, their close connection to their fans, and their sense of humor. So in the wake of Taylor Swift's bank-busting Eras tour, Guster embarked on their own tour, which they called "We Also Have Eras" – a reminder of their enduring presence and road warrior work ethic on the music scene for over 30 years. Guster has a new record out, their first in 5 years, called Ooh La La, and it brings the band back to our studio for a live set, with bongos. Set list: 1. Keep Going 2. Black Balloon 3. Satellite (with Max Fine, piano)

Richard Barone is the author of the terrific book "Music and Revolution-Greenwich Village in the 60's" and he joins Buzz Knight for this episode.Richard is a musician and professor and he is passionate about the village music scene.Show Notes here to learn more. One Man's Mission to Share his Love of the Greenwich Village Music Scene with Richard BaroneWhen we think of the term “musical range,” I think you have to actually think of Greenwich village in the sense that in the 60s, the village was such a hotbed of styles and personalities. The village is accorded the backbone of singers, song writing, and folk singing, because of this incredible range of poets and a live feeling of what was going on. You still feel it today, but it is different from the 60s. So, it's rather fitting that our guest today, on taking a walk, is not a stranger to the musical range. Richard Barone is an acclaimed recording artist, performer, producer, and author. Since pioneering the indie rock scene in Hoboken, NJ, as frontman of The Bongos and then helping to launch the chamber pop movement with his solo debut “cool blue halo,” Barone has produced countless studio recordings and worked with artists in every musical genre. Richard has spent decades navigating the musical neurons of the village with his great new book, Music and Revolution. This book is about Greenwich Village in the 60s. By the end, Richard will transport you in time. You will feel as if you are going through a meditation, you are part of. Get the experience of this amazing village with Richard Barone. Tune in!
