We're venturing to Garfagnana, Italy, in the Year of Our Lord 1347, for a raunchy comedy based on The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio. In the film, three medieval nuns lead a simple life in their convent until a virile young servant who's been forced into hiding by his angry lord appears, and the repressed nunnery erupts in a whirlwind of pansexual horniness, substance abuse, and wicked revelry. The film, written and directed by Jeff Baena, has an all-star cast, including Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza, Kate Micucci, Dave Franco, Jemima Kirk, John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon, Fred Armisen, and Nick Offerman. Baena, who passed away earlier this year, was married to co-star Aubrey Plaza. In their review, the Catholic League called the film “pure trash.” But is the price of admission into this Garden of Earthly Delights worth the penance, or do we love the sin but hate the sinner? "John Wesley O'Toole, a disbarred former attorney, continues to struggle to build a new life as an art dealer after his release from prison. In this, the third book in the series, O'Toole has made the decision to ask his girlfriend Jenna to marry him, hoping to return both of their mixed-up lives to some sense of normalcy. They find themselves in Madrid, Spain, where O'Toole is attending an art exhibition. He plans to ask for Jenna's hand in the Prado Museum while standing in front of the magnificent painting, The Garden of Earthly Delights. But Jenna, on seeing it, becomes emotional, in the process revealing more of her checkered past as a stripper and former drug addict. Importantly, she begins to speak of Mindy, her best friend who disappeared years earlier. Back home in Savannah, when Mindy's skeletal remains are discovered in a shallow unmarked grave in the rural south Georgia countryside, it soon becomes evident that O'Toole's wish for a happy marriage will never happen unless the truth of Mindy's death is revealed. It's a wild plot, full of totally unexpected twists and turns!" About the author William Rawlings was born, raised and lives in Sandersville, Georgia, home to his family for more than two centuries. His first five books were suspense novels set in rural Georgia. Turning then to non-fiction, he is the author of three subsequent works of Georgia (and Southern) history published by Mercer University Press. His books consistently garner excellent reviews, and he has been the recipient of a number of writing awards. One constant theme in Rawlings's writing is a well-defined sense of place, especially in relation to the landscape of rural Georgia. He states, “One of life's greatest pageants is the continuity of life in small Southern towns. Characters wander in and out, plying their intrigues and playing their roles, both major and minor. There's hardly a need for fiction, as the truth is oftentimes more bizarre. What more inspiration could a writer ask for?” This approach to the floating opera of Southern life adds dimension and depth to Rawlings's books. His most recent works include a suspense novel set in Savannah titled "The Girl with Kaleidoscope Eyes," and a true-crime thriller "Six Inches Deeper. Both were published by Mercer University Press in 2019 and 2020, respectively. An eleventh book, "Lighthouses of the Georgia Coast," is scheduled for release in early 2021. The rich tale of the two trees in the Garden of Earthly Delights points to the choices and consequences of seeing, taking and eating what is desirable to look at. Humans require wisdom to be good stewards in the world and faithfully discern what is good and evil. So why were Adam and Eve warned not to eat from the very tree that would give them this? Why prohibit them from accessing wisdom? The answer to this question will give us insight into how our desires are manipulated and how the route to fulfilling them is not always as it seems.

Episode 129 Women Synthesists Playlist Time Track Time Start Introduction –Thom Holmes 04:36 00:00 Eliane Radigue, “Transamorem – Transmortem” (excerpt) from Transamorem – Transmortem (2011 Important Records). Composed in 1973 for ARP 2500 modular synthesizer. Music of slowly changing drones using the marvelous ARP synthesizer, which was Radigue's key instrument for years after having experimented with Moog and Buchla modulars. 39:29 04:40 Caroline K, “The Happening World” from Now Wait For Last Year (1987 Earthly Delights). Caroline was a co-founder of Nocturnal Emissions, together with Nigel Ayers, in 1980. Arranged By, Recorded By, Producer, Composed By, Performer, Caroline K. Executive-Producer, Nigel Ayers. Drones of a different ilk. Noisy sounds, steady articulation, interesting timbres popping in and out. Sonically articulate. 20:49 44:03 Pauline Anna Strom, “Organized Confusion” from Plot Zero (1987 Trans-Millenia Consort Recordings). Pauline Anna Strom was a decades-long composer, musician and healer who lived and worked in San Francisco, CA. Pioneering blind synthesist. Music composed, synthesized, electronic treatments by Pauline Anna Strom. Strom taught herself to compose intuitively, practicing sounds with her various synthesizers, which included a Yamaha DX7, Prophet 10, two Yamaha CS1X portable keyboards and an E-mu Emulator. When she was ready to record, she laid it down using a Tascam four-track recorder and assembled her albums using a computer workstation. Early days for both the sampler and workstation. 06:04 1:04:48 Pauline Anna Strom, “Spacial Spectre” from Spectre (1984 Trans-Millenia Consort Recordings). Composed, synthesized, and electronic treatments by Pauline Anna Strom. From her vampire-inspired album. 06:58 1:10:51 Pauline Anna Strom, “Blood Thirst” from Spectre (1984 Trans-Millenia Consort Recordings). Composed, synthesized, and electronic treatments by Pauline Anna Strom. From her vampire-inspired album. 07:23 1:17:40 Maryanne Amacher, “"Head Rhythm 1" And "Plaything 2" from Sound Characters (Making The Third Ear) (1999 Tzadik). Electroacoustic composer of sound installations, best known for her incorporation of otoacoustic emissions -- sounds that seem to be emanating from inside one's own head. This track plays with that concept and sets your brain up to experience itself, so to speak. 10:04 1:25:04 Caterina Barbieri. “This Causes Consciousness To Fracture” from Patterns Of Consciousness (2017 Important Records). Italian composer and musician from Bologna. This album was created using analog synthesis. Barbieri has said, “In Patterns of Consciousness I was interested in exploring the power of sound on our consciousness. I wanted to explore how a pattern creates a certain state of consciousness and how the gradual transformation of that pattern can affect that state of consciousness. I believe that sound is a tool for the exploration, reconfiguration and expansion of human perceptions.” I find this to be in a similar psychological vein as the Amacher work also heard in this episode. 22:44 1:34:56 QOA (Nina Corti), “Sauco” (04:22), “Liquen” (02:50), “Yatei” (03:04), “Muitu” (03:16) from SAUCO (2024 Leaving Records). Side 1 of the newest release from this composer-performer from Argentina. “Sonic journey crafted to cultivate poetic gestures amidst Fauna, Flora, Fungi, Mineral Waters, Wind, and Earth. Each track is an exploration of sound's constant transformation, akin to dragonfly particles swimming in the air. Like waves occupying a space in the spectrum, the compositions work with the movement, condensation, and lightness of the air.” 13:33 1:57:38 Opening background music: Pauline Anna Strom, “The Unveiling” from Trans-Millenia Consort (1982 Ether Ship Records). Her first cassette release from 1982. Composed and performed on synthesizer by Pauline Anna Strom. (06:04) Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. My Books/eBooks: Electronic and Experimental Music, sixth edition, Routledge 2020. Also, Sound Art: Concepts and Practices, first edition, Routledge 2022. See my companion blog that I write for the Bob Moog Foundation. For a transcript, please see my blog, Noise and Notations. We were graced by not one but two guest rankers who witnessed the band recording the album in Los Angeles: Mike Keneally, a former Frank Zappa guitarist who played guitar on one of the album's outtakes and Gary Helsinger, the Green Jello singer and then-Tower Records employee who got to hang with the band at Summa Studios and KROQ's studios during this era. Part 3 of our mini-series about direction and purpose in life! Writing an introduction for our guest this week is an impossible task, but I'll try. Martín Prechtel is an artist, writer, musician, storyteller, teacher, healer and leading thinker..he's also one of the funniest guests we've ever had on The Earthly Delights. He has lived an incredibly full life and has some profound lessons to share with whoever is open to learning. I was first introduced to the work of Martin by My dear friend Matt who shared with me “The Smell of Rain on Dust: Grief and Praise”. In this book, he speaks of the inherent interconnection between grief and praise in a truly life-affirming manner. It is one of the most influential books on how I view life and I would encourage anyone to give it a read if they are struggling with grief and joy in their own lives. To be brutally honest, I would recommend the work of Martin Prechtel to you all listening. Why do I say that? Well, if you are listening to The Earthly Delights Podcast, chances are that you are finding navigating the modern world very challenging. I don't need to go into the many ways as to how life in 2023 is sucking our life force but I know that many of us are left today feeling blocked, numb, hopeless and even apathetic. Martin's work addresses the maladies of our current situation but still manages to instil a deep sense of hope, love, meaning and gratitude in the people who listen to him talk and read his books. His core messages are simple but profoundly countercultural and I invited him on because I think we all need to hear his words until they sink into our bones. In this conversation we speak about some of the crucial lessons in his book “The Unlikely Peace at Cuchumaquic: The Parallel Lives of People as Plants: Keeping the Seeds Alive” namely the nature of our collective disconnection or what he calls un-intactness, the importance of giving energy towards something beautiful that we will never see fully blossom in our lifetime as well as the significance of attempting something even if it feels impossible. These areas of discussion are so relevant now and it was an absolute delight and honour to spend this time with Martin. Thank you all for listening and I left links to his website and soul-sparking music in the show notes if you want more for Martin. The new album ‘The Sun's Gonna Melt Your Gun' is a really touching, powerful piece of art and you will hear a little snippet of it at the end of the podcast. My guest in this week's Book Club podcast is the art critic Jonathan Jones. The term 'renaissance' is out of fashion among scholars these days, but in his new book Earthly Delights: A History of the Renaissance Jonathan argues that it points to something momentous in human history. On the podcast, Jonathan makes the case for what that something is – which is perhaps more heretical, and less Italian, than we might have remembered.

Kristina Smeriglio is a writer and editor who has always been fascinated by the complexities of the human experience. She strives to understand the roles of the mind and the heart, of the psyche and emotions, and so it has become the main theme of her work. Kristina focuses particularly on how the mind and our emotions are affected by our environment and experiences.Kristina spends much of her time wondering about the human experience and exploring the age-old question, “why are we here?” She explored that same question and many others in her novel, Falling Into Fire, as she dove deep into The Garden of Earthly Delights, the painting by Hieronymus Bosch.https://kristysmeriglio.com/ https://www.instagram.com/kristysmeriglio/ Falling Into Fire BookAnyone you may ask will have a story about finding love, how difficult it was to attain, the pitfalls, the horrors of breakups, loneliness, and the doubts of self-worth that accompany such heartache. This story is based on true events, about a young woman, struggling with the rigors of her writing career coming face to face with the inner struggles she has kept hidden for most of her life. A fantasy exploration. An odyssey of the human condition, of her search for love, companionship, sex, and their meaning. All, while dealing with every aspect of her psyche, her heart, and possibly her very soul. Falling Into Fire is a celebration of life, death, relationships, and the journey we each undergo in our individual pursuits to be loved.https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/falling-into-fire-kristina-smeriglio/1139740396?ean=9781955281218 https://www.amazon.com/dp/195528122X
In s3e28, Platemark host Ann Shafer speaks with Linda Hults, retired professor of art history from the College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio. Linda wrote THE textbook on the history of Western prints, which any student of the topic will undoubtedly still have on their shelves. At nearly 1,000 pages, the book offers up more than 800 illustrations and covers print history from Gutenberg through the early 1980s. It also includes incredibly thorough notes, bibliography, glossary, and index. It is indispensable. Since retirement, Linda continues to contribute to the field essays and articles ranging in subjects from the devil and witchcraft to masculinity. Episode image by Linda Hults. Hieronymus Bosch created one of the strangest and most talked about paintings in art history: The Garden of Earthly Delights. But there is a riddle hidden in the garden: is it an idyllic paradise or a sinful false paradise? On this episode, we will dive deeper than ever before to search for the answer. Other questions we will explore on this episode: what makes The Garden of Earthly Delights a work of creative genius? Why do some historians consider it a work of madness? And what do we really know about the mysterious painter: Hieronymus Bosch? In today's episode of the True Fiction Project Podcast, I'm speaking with actor and activist, Tramell Tillman. Tramell and I laugh about his least favorite job as an abstinence educator of middle and high school students and how he has been involved in nonprofit work for over 20 years now. We chat about the success of his latest project on the Apple TV+ psychological thriller series, Severance. He shares his process for building the complex character of Seth Milchick and his experience working with director Ben Stiller. Listen in as we chat about activism, arts, and abstinence! Also, hear a short story titled The Garden of Earthly Delights, written by Parker James. IN THIS EPISODE: [02:34] Tramell's least favorite job as abstinence educator in Mississippi [13:30] Tramell's role in the TV show, Severance [16:08] The challenge of becoming character, Seth Milchick and what Ben Stiller is like as a director [20:00] The evolution of Milchick and how he differs from the original intent [23:55] Future projects and philanthropic work for Tramell Tillman [31:14] Short Story: The Garden of Earthly Delights, written by Parker James KEY TAKEAWAYS: One of Tramell's first and least favorite jobs was as an abstinence educator for middle and high school students in Mississippi. At the time, Mississippi had a high rate of STDs and pregnancy. Tramell shares how it was one of the worst jobs he ever had and one that he was terrible at doing. For the role of Seth Milchick, Tramell has developed a very specific process using meditation and exercise to get into character. Philanthropic work is very important to Tramell and he has been involved in nonprofit work for over 20 years now. It was something that was ingrained in him through his grandparents and parents from an early age. Serving as a series regular on a top-billed show such as this comes with an incredible artistic history. Tillman has graced the screen and stage for over 20 years. The classically trained actor is no stranger to the classics. This spring you can hear Tillman voice the role of Edmund, in Shakespeare's King Lear, as part of the Play on Podcast Series. In the summer he will return to the series voicing the role of Duke Orsino in Twelfth Night. In his spare time Tillman works in local communities supporting causes of arts advocacy, mental health awareness, LGBTQ+ rights, and causes focusing on persons of color. Welcome to Day 1922 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Earthly Delights – Daily Wisdom Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps. We are on Day 1922 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote and some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. So we are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on today's trek as we increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver! If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Jonathan Edwards, and it is: All earthly delights are but streams. But God is the ocean. Earthly Delights God has blessed us as His imagers with many wonderful delights while we continue building His kingdom on earth. But unfortunately, we become so enamored with our earthly riches and the beauty we have all around us that we forget that they are just a little foretaste of the divine glory that God has stored up for us. Of course, we should enjoy all the riches and blessings we have now, but we should never become so consumed with them that we miss the blessing from heaven that God will pour out to us if we remain faithful to His calling. What God has given us now is just a bubbling brook compared to the ocean of goodness and blessing we will receive when we join him in glory. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Corinthians+2%3A6-12&version=NLT (1 Corinthians 2:6-12) Yet when I am among mature believers, I do speak with words of wisdom, but not the kind of wisdom that belongs to this world or to the rulers of this world, who are soon forgotten. No, the wisdom we speak of is the mystery of God[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Corinthians+2&version=NLT#fen-NLT-28362c (c)]—his plan that was previously hidden, even though he made it for our ultimate glory before the world began. But the rulers of this world have not understood it; if they had, they would not have crucified our glorious Lord. That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.” But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God's deep secrets. No one can know a person's thoughts except that person's own spirit, and no one can know God's thoughts except God's own Spirit. And we have received God's Spirit (not the world's spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us. As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' If you would like to listen to any of our past 1921 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are available at Wisdom-Trek.com. Thank you so much for allowing me to be your guide, mentor, and, most of all, your friend as I serve you through this Wisdom-Trek podcast and journal. As we take this trek together, let us always: Live Abundantly (Fully) Love Unconditionally Listen Intentionally Learn Continuously Lend to others...
Do you know Hieronymus Bosch's painting The Garden of Earthly Delights? Do you know the Twitter bot that just posts close-ups of the painting all day long? This week's review is Bosch Bot, thinking about a bot as a curatorial tool and just how much more engaged I am with the painting via this mad Twitter presentation than I would be if I was stood in the Prado in Madrid squinting at it IRL. You can find the written version of this on our website: thewhitepube.com ++++ follow Bosch Bot here: twitter.com/boschbot
