Ashley is a storyteller, she first started by searching for fossils at her grandmother's house and saving the trees in her garden. She traveled to the Caribbean, saw the rainforest, and was blown away by the fact that the local people ate termites because of their amount of protein and how the termites lived with tree species. Growing up, Ashley wanted to study biology and become an artist. Although specializations like those in the United States diverged, she couldn't stop doing both. As a result, she decided to study anthropology, nestling her in a perfect way. It aligned with how she saw things already coexisting and having these connections siloed in other forms of study. However, during all this time, she met many people with intuitive wisdom about themselves and the natural world, who had incredible things to say and who inspired her. That's how she finally found herself, looking at stories, thinking she could reach people, support them and tell their stories. She wanted to create an environment where we were more self-reflective and could listen. And above all, she needed reciprocity. How did she get there? Who did she meet on her way? How and why was storytelling the solution? What did she learn about scientific communications? Ashley, Director of Storytelling and Marketing for Communications and Partnerships at the Jane Goodall Institute in the USA, will take you on her journey to cultivate reciprocity through hopeful storytelling. ⭐ Do you want to support Terra Stories? In this episode of the Hopecast, Dr. Goodall is joined by Ashley Sullivan, Associate Director of Communications & Policy at the Jane Goodall Institute USA, as they hear from Hopecasters from around the world. Jane and Ashley listen to energizing messages about how Jane's lifetime of work has inspired Hopecasters to work hard for their own communities and continue in her footsteps. Nina from Philadelphia shares a tearful message of gratitude, thanking Jane for inspiring her so profoundly and motivating her to lead a life of impact.  Animal nutrition and wildlife conservation student Nevan, living in Florida, writes in to ask Dr. Goodall's advice on organizing his own conservation foundation, looking at the immense success and impact of the Jane Goodall Institute. 16-year-old Roots & Shoots member, Alicia, also writes in from New Zealand to share what brings her her greatest hope: animals. Alicia speaks to animals' “special talent” of bringing people together and how she believes they are what's going to get us through these dark times. This is a belief also held by Jane, who talks about how people have been connecting to other animals, especially their pets for their love and companionship, during the pandemic. Ashley points out the poignancy of how prevalent the theme of non-human animals was to this particular mailbag as it was Jane's stories about chimpanzees and her own connection to other animals that inspires generations to take action and also, most essentially, hold onto hope. Hey Hopecasters! Submit your own questions and comments for a chance to be included in a future Mailbag episode here.

In this episode, I interviewed a friend and colleague, Ashley Sullivan.  From her website:  Ashley Sullivan is a Women's Wellness Coach & Therapist, devoted mother, folk herbalist and founder of Rosehips & Ritual, a women-centered resource that weaves ritual and ceremony into womb healing, transformation, and empowerment. Her work brings the magic and reverence back to the many rites-of-passage that we undergo as women throughout our fertile years. After her first pregnancy in 2006, she began serving women in their journeys home to themselves through the sacred understanding of birth, fertility, and the cycles and rhythms of womanhood. She has studied at The Farm in Tennessee, been a Le Leche League leader, Birthing from Within mentor, Placenta Specialist, and served as a birth doula. Her own experiences have continued to shape and deepen her offerings. She is now raising her family at Earthaven Ecovillage and serving her community of women through Arvigo Maya Abdominal Therapy, one-on-one & group Fertility Awareness mentorships, vaginal steaming experiences & handcrafted botanicals, as well as holding space for exploring the depths of the feminine landscape. She supports women throughout the entirety of their fertility journey from Fertility Awareness education, to self-care practices for all phases of the cycle, pregnancy loss and release. As a devoted wife, she understands the importance of having a partner that supports the decisions and practices around fertility and women's health, so she offers education, training and coaching for menfolk as well. She spends her days enjoying her homegrown, off-grid Appalachian life, circling with her sisters, mothering her four children, lovingly preparing nourishing foods and wild-harvested medicines, reading, studying, participating in earth-based ceremonies, sewing cloth menstrual pads, singing in the dawn, playing her drum to the waters, and delighting in exploring the wisdom of her own womb and sacred cycles. Her deepest gratitudes to all who have taught and supported her along the way, Pam England, Rosita Arvigo, Mary Francis & Harvey LittleBrave, her husband Joe, her children, and her ancestors. In 1982, in a speech to Harvard University, Audrey Lorde famously said, “. . .If I didn't define myself for myself, I would be crunched into other people's fantasies for me and eaten alive.” Quotes are inspiring. And, seeing them put into action is empowering. That is why this week’s guests, Alex and Ash Sullivan, are two of my favorite people. Despite the pressure of a white supramcist capitalist patriarchy, They define themselves for themselves every single day. As they will share in the episode - that doesn’t mean it is easy. I mean - how does one go about living their bold self without being eaten alive? Let this interview be a roadmap that can guide you to your own internal answer to that question. Oh - and did I mention that this episode is being released on their birthday? *Cue the confetti* For real though - Ash and Alex are the best. Alex Sullivan is the Co-Founder of Artists Call to Action. They are also a dope poet, facilitator, activist, educator and freelance diversity consultant in academia. As a mixed agender human being, Alex’s work is often reflective of how the self is presented in the digital world and how current socio-political events can distort that presentation. Their creative and academic work is focused on the black queer experience and every aspect of it, frequently tying in themes of womanism, examination of power structures in the United States, and the experience of the Afro-Caribbean diaspora as the communities have spread out all over the world. Ashley Sullivan is a counselor-in-training and poet who is currently being considered for licensure, actively publishing, and putting energy into other creative endeavors such as starting their own business. Ash is balancing pursuing a career in poetry while also pursuing work in mental health and public health. Currently, they have been published in five or more running publications as well as fulfilling activism work centered around gender, creativity, and community. They are a current candidate for their Master’s of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Long Island University. On this week’s episode we go all in on: creativity, activism, learning to trust yourself, finding your own voice, the unique relationship Ash and Alex have with each other, getting comfortable with your own silence, getting to know yourself better, and, Well...you’re gonna need to push play to find that out! We could all invite a little more grace, community, and courage into our lives. And Ash and Alex deliver all of that and more in abundance on this week’s episode. Let’s do this. Hit play. And join us.
