It's mid-afternoon and time for a treat! Do you choose a healthy piece of fruit, or do you head straight for the chocolate? It turns out that well before we consciously decide what we're going to eat, our brain has already weighed up our choices — and in a fraction of a second. Now a new study shows which food attributes are processed by our brain faster than others, and how this might influence our dietary decisions. I've been reflecting recently on how much I talk here about the reasons food behaviors like binge eating have nothing to do with the food, but the state you're eating the food in. As I've explored here many times, there are so many somatic, trauma, and nervous system layers to your food patterns. But part of food recovery has to include explorations around food itself. In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I chat about: How food can be a role model for the felt sense of safetyWhy eating is a somatic practice What to look out for when using food as a safety cue How to know when you're ready for this kind of somatic practice You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/how-food-choices-can-remind-your-body-how-to-feel-safeThis current Somatic Eating® Program class is already filling up! Do you struggle to make healthy food choices at social events, parties, or family gatherings—then feel guilty afterward? You're not alone. In this episode, we're unpacking the #1 thing keeping busy women stuck around food and why it feels so hard to stay consistent, especially in social settings. You'll learn:
"Intuitive eating is not about perfectly staying within a calorie number or a maintenance threshold. It is about developing trust with your body and using each eating experience as feedback, not a test of whether you pass or fail."Have you ever felt like you just can't stop eating certain foods, even when you're full? Or maybe you find yourself second-guessing every food choice, worried you're eating too much as you try to follow intuitive eating? These everyday struggles can leave you feeling stuck in guilt, confusion, and chaos around food.In this solo episode, I'm answering real and vulnerable questions Rebels sent me on Instagram. These are questions I hear all the time as a Registered Dietitian and Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor. From why we overeat “delicious” food, to how to handle food indecision and what it means to “eat too many calories” as an intuitive eater, I'm breaking down myths, normalizing the messiness, and offering practical, compassion-filled tools to help you trust your body again. You'll also hear a relatable story from fellow Rebel, Jaimie, who went from tracking every calorie and overeating while on vacation to truly enjoying food and stopping when full. Together, we'll look at the patterns that keep so many of us stuck, the real reasons eating can feel chaotic, and why permission, structure, and kindness are game-changers on your intuitive eating journey. What You'll Learn:Why honoring fullness isn't about willpower and what's really behind that “can't stop eating” feelingHow food rules and restriction actually make overeating more likely, and what to do about itPractical tools for navigating indecision and food guilt so eating can feel less chaoticThe mindset shifts that help you move away from perfectionism with food and listen to your body's unique needsWhy occasional overeating is normal (even for intuitive eaters) and how every eating experience is an opportunity to learnHow to zoom out and look at the big picture of health, beyond any single meal or calorie countRemember, Rebels - this work isn't about getting every food choice perfect. It's about showing up with curiosity, compassion, and a willingness to trust your body one step at a time. Thank you for being part of this community and letting me support you in finding more peace with food. “Simplicity was something I learned from my family and grew up with. The fact is, you do not need fancy food, you do not need a huge variety of food. You can have some potatoes, and you can have one vegetable, and you make a brothy sauce with the vegetables, and you pour it over the freshly cooked potatoes. It can be so comforting and nourishing. So simplicity is something that is important for us to understand.” —Daniela Kratz “I grew up in a household where we cooked together. Cooking was a way of connecting for us. Culturally, food is a language of love, poetry, and respect for nature. We grew up and used everything that was available; nothing went to waste. So for my kids it was important to pass that on.” —Shirin Gonili Aryanpour What if the most radical act of sustainability isn't what you buy, but how you gather your family around the table? In a world that tells working moms to do it all, the real challenge is weaving mindful choices into the chaos of daily life without losing the joy, the flavor, or the connection. If you've ever wondered how to nurture your kids, your career, and the planet—without burning out—this conversation is for you. Meet Shirin Aryanpour, a mom and former physical therapist who transformed her family's kitchen into a hub of love, culture, and zero-waste creativity, and Daniela Kratz, founder of Farmhouse Lab, who brings the wisdom of generations and the simplicity of real food to her own children. Together, they share honest stories of juggling work, family, and the pursuit of a sustainable lifestyle, offering practical rituals, cultural insights, and the reassurance that perfection isn't the goal. Tune in as Justine, Shirin, and Daniela explore how food rituals, cultural traditions, and open-door community spirit can empower working moms to teach their kids about conscious choices, nurture respect for nature, balance busy schedules, and celebrate the beauty of imperfection. Meet Daniela: A SF Bay Area-based mom of two, Daniela Kratz, the mastermind behind Farmhouse Lab's high-quality specialty dressings, which she launched in 2016, shifted from a sustainability leadership role with a large global corporation to focus on what inspired her most — directly helping individuals make healthier, more locally-driven and sustainable food choices. Daniela's inspiration for creating high-quality, sustainably sourced, delicious dressings originated from her realization that the majority of dressings on the shelves contain emulsifiers, preservatives, artificial flavors, and/or refined sugars. And what was easy for her to whip up in the kitchen wasn't so simple for many on-the-go parents and professionals. With the start of her own family, combined with her love of entertaining and passion for sustainability, it was a natural for Daniela to create a business designed to promote a healthy lifestyle. In one of the most life-altering conversations we've ever had on the podcast, Dr. Cate Shanahan returns to unpack the deep, deceptive forces shaping our food choices—and what it's doing to our bodies. Drawing from her groundbreaking book The Fatburn Fix, Dr. Cate reveals how vegetable oils have quietly become the most damaging ingredient in our food supply, disrupting our metabolism, fueling chronic illness, and rewiring our hunger cues from childhood. Together, we expose the myths we've been fed for decades—from snacking culture to sweeteners with no calories—and offer real, doable steps to take back your health, energy, and sanity. This episode is a masterclass in metabolic truth, challenging everything you've been taught about what's “healthy” to eat. We talk about why most people don't experience normal hunger anymore, how fat is actually an organ, and why fixing your energy is more important than chasing weight loss.
