TechCentral — Mike Sharman, founder of digital marketing agency Retroviral, joins TechCentral editor Duncan McLeod for a chat about MatchKit.io, a new website builder aimed at sports professionals. Founded by Sharman, Springbok rugby player Bryan Habana, and sports content creator and broadcaster Ben Karpinski, Retroactive - which owns MatchKit.co - intends to help professional sportsmen and sportswomen worldwide develop a digital presence for themselves. In the podcast, Sharman explains that while most sports people have a presence on social media, they often don't have their own website. The idea behind the website is to make it easier for sports professionals to develop an online presence, raise money for their chosen charities and make money from selling merchandise. In the podcast, Sharman explains how the business model works, how he and Habana came up with the idea for the platform, and where they see it going next. Sharman also looks back at 10 years of Retroviral and some of the big campaigns the agency has worked on in that time, including with Nando's and RocoMamas. Don't miss the discussion!
BizNews — Athletes would have descended on Tokyo in July and August this year, hoping that four years of sweat and blood would bring them the glory of an Olympic medal. But their dreams have been dashed by the Covid-19 pandemic. It has affected every single sports star with a resultant loss in income. New Zealand's rugby players will be the world's first sports people to play in front of crowds as it had eliminated Covid-19 from its shores, but Covid-19 is likely to hang around in most other countries for the foreseeable future. Organisers of other major sports events have tried to put together events without crowds, but have had difficulties luring big names to participate. The US Tennis Open Championship suggested that every player should arrive with just one team mate for this year’s championship in September, but last year’s winner Rafa Nadal indicated that he would not be interested if that is how the event would be run. So, what do athletes do in the interim to earn money and stay relevant? World Cup winning Springbok legend and try scoring machine Bryan Habana has teamed up with a former school mate, Mike Sharman to launch Matchkit.co – a platform that gives athletes a solution to grow their commercial brands. The pair’s sporting agency, Retroactive.digital, which they founded with Ben Karpinski and Shaka Sisulu won the Sport Industry’s Young agency of the Year award in November 2019. – Linda van Tilburg

What a ridiculous 24 hours it has been. I initially was going to do a podcast about Haroon Lorgat's text to Proteas coach Russell Domingo telling him to pick another black player. Quotas, race, politics and South Africa are intrinsically linked. I wanted to explore the issue and had invited Cliff Central's Ben Karpinski onto the show to discuss further. He lives in Johannesburg and is white. It's bizarre that I even have to share his colour, but this is how South Africa works apparently. He wrote a great article on the topic and has some strong views on the matter. It's an ugly subject that not many people want to tackle in case people call them racist or bigoted. I had reached out to the South African Minister of Sport, but his office did not reply in time. However, while planning the podcast, the Sri Lankan government took over Sri Lanka Cricket. This move caused the ICC to remind them that they would likely be suspended under Article 2.9(B) of the ICC's Articles of Association banning government interference into cricket matters. But wait! Isn't that what the South African government just did with their World Cup semi final team? So where's South Africa's please explain letter? Then, ICC President Mustafa Kamal decided to resign in protest because the ICC have not followed their own constitution. He was meant to present the World Cup trophy and wasn't allowed to. Him calling two umpires cheats and corrupt after Bangladesh's loss to India in the World Cup probably didn't help. Strap yourselves in folks. This is one Emergency 'Can't Bowl Can't Throw' podcast you don't want to miss.
