So Much More: Creating Space for God (Lectio Divina and Scripture Meditation)
Why do we fast? There are many reasons, but one main reason is to draw near to God. During the season of Lent, Christians traditionally practice fasting. In this conversation with Amy Seiffert, author of Starved, we discuss all things fasting, including some how-tos and how-not-tos. Amy is also the author of Grace Looks Amazing on You and on the teaching team at Brookside Church. She is an affiliate Cru staff member and a regular YouVersion Bible Teacher. Some highlights from our conversation: Amy tells us the story of her son's diagnosis with Crone's disease. He was eating but was malnourished. As Amy dug in to get intentional about his needed diet change, she realized he wasn't the only one malnourished. God helped her see that she and many others also needed a spiritual diet change. We discuss fasting and some of Amy's attempts to fast – what worked and what didn't. What didn't work was fasting without feasting on God. We talk about fasting from food reveals what really controls us. Amy points out that the passage we meditated on, Matthew 6:16-18, indicates fasting is a practice. Practice implies we will get some things wrong and some things right. Based on Matthew 6, Jesus desired that fasting would remove performance and invite presence. What are some of the wrong motives for fasting? Fasting as a way to try to get something from God. The goal of fasting is to connect and commune with God. And yet, there are times we fast and pray to ask God for things, but if we don't receive our request, will we still worship and trust God? Amy shares some examples of fasting from Scripture and what they had in common. Fasting from food isn't the only way to fast. Amy gives us some ideas for different ways we can fast. Finally, Amy gives us some encouragement for how we can fast well. What are you consuming? What are you filling up on? Is it adding to your anxiety? We are beginning a brand new series today: Overcoming Anxiety. Most of us experience some sort of anxiety, everything from occasional or situational feelings of worry or fear all the way to anxiety disorders where there is frequent and intense, even excessive worry or fear. For the most part, in this series we will be talking about the common, everyday anxiety we all experience, not anxiety disorders. But later in the series, we will hear from a LPC on different types of anxiety and when it's time to see a mental health professional. So how do we become grounded in peace? We let God intervene. Today Amy Seiffert joins me for a conversation about nourishing ourselves with the things our souls need to be fulfilled. The Psalms express nearly every emotion, from despair to joy. They meet us where we’re at and help us find our way to the Lord. Amy Seiffert has gone deep into the Psalms to find healing and she joins the team to help us go deep. Amy’s the author of Grace Looks Amazing On You and she also serves on the teaching team at Brookside Church in Bowling Green. First, the moment Amy felt the enormous weight of sin being lifted from her. Then, how Jesus has healed Amy from the deep wounds of sexual abuse. Next, the key to being led by Jesus: humility. Then, Psalm 88 ends with darkness and despair, it doesn’t resolve. About that Amy says, “I kinda think that’s awesome!” Next, the hardest moment in Amy’s life and the power of Psalm 23. Then, how Psalm 46 shows us how God loves broken sinners. Then, the Psalms show us that as we pour out our raw emotions to God, we see him for who he really is. Last, the Psalms are like a song playlist. Choose the one the fits your mood and encounter the living God!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“As soon as I say: When another person changes, then I can finally be Ok, I just farmed out my well being into some else's life.” - Steve Rieske, pastor and counselor. How often do we do that? Put our well-being into someone else's hands? Bank our ability to be OK on someone else changing? All. The. Time. So what do we do with this thinking, with forgiveness, with reconciliation, with all the relationship exchanges? We brought on our dear friend Steve Rieske to talk all about this topic. And we all need it. You know what else you need? To laugh about what kind of pool you might want to jump in if it was filled with something besides water. Like mayo. You never know what kind of laughing and learning you'll come across under The Big Top but we think you'll love it!In the fall of 2019, Steve became the full-time Lead Teaching Pastor at Brookside Church and he has been involved with Brookside since its creation, serving in multiple roles including as an Elder. In addition to serving Brookside, Steve served with the college ministry CRU since 1999. Steve holds an undergraduate degree from Ohio University and in 2014 received his Masters of Arts and Clinical Counseling from Ashland Theological Seminary. Are you tired of cleaning up the same messes day after day? Are you tired of making dinner, changing diapers or driving carpool day after day? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, you aren’t alone! In fact, you’re invited into a guilt-free zone for a precious conversation today about embracing God’s grace in the messiness of motherhood. On this episode of the Better Together podcast, my guest is speaker and author, Amy Seiffert. She’s the author of the new book, Chin Up: Wearing Grace, Strength and Dignity When Motherhood Unravels Our Soul. Amy and her husband, Rob live in NW Ohio and they are the parents of three kids. For the past 16 years, Amy has been writing and speaking on staff with Cru and she's the Director of Outward Movement at Brookside Church in Bowling Green, OH. Before she became a mom, Amy pictured motherhood as a beautiful dress that she saw her friends wearing so beautifully. However, Amy felt that her motherhood dress felt floppy and didn’t fit quite right. She says that every time she tried to adjust or change, her motherhood dress would shift and expose the things that she wanted to keep covered up. Amy and I talk about how she found God’s grace in the mundane and maddening tasks of motherhood. If you’ve ever struggled with endless laundry, Mom, I’m hungry, hated playing Barbies or was tempted to burn your kids’ puzzles, Amy’s been there. One of the most powerful parts of our conversation centered around changing our perspective on the endless loads of laundry or those long sleepless nights. I love how Amy’s former seminar professor calls those seemingly mundane tasks “maintaining and sustaining.” In her book, Amy writes that when we see the sunrise and sunset or the seasons change, those are examples of how God maintains and sustains our world. Amy was encouraged when she realized that her maintaining and sustaining tasks like laundry, making dinner and changing diapers mirrored God’s work in our world. I hope that you listen in for that powerful conversation. As we talk about Chin Up, Amy shares her struggle to overcome anger, letting go of unrealistic expectations and most of all, how she's learning to embrace God’s grace in motherhood., if you’ve been beating yourself up for not being the kind of mom that you want to be or think that you should be, Amy’s story is you’ve been beating yourself up for not being the kind of mom that you want to be or think that you should be, Amy’s story is Sweet friend, if you’ve been beating yourself up for not being the kind of mom that you want to be or feeling guilty about not always enjoying motherhood, Amy’s story is perfect encouragement for you.
