In this episode, Kelly Matthews and Paula Drew of the Wisconsin Early Childhood Association describe how to create a family handbook for your child care center. This handbook is key to your bottom line, your reputation and ultimately, your business. They give the following writing tips:Use a consistent font and formatting throughout. Review carefully for correct spelling and grammar. Write in plain language that is easy to understand. Do you serve families who speak languages other than English? If so, invest in getting your policies translated and remember this step every time you update them. Make your documents easy to navigate with page numbers and a table of contents. Ensure they include all state-required policies and reflect every aspect of your programming. Include a "last updated" date so readers know the information is current. They also walk through how to organize a handbook and how to avoid the biggest mistakes they see when directors and owners create handbooks.Want to learn more about the work Kelly and Paula are doing? Feel free to check out www.wisconsinearlychildhood.org or email them at PDREW@wisconsinearlychildhood.org and KMATTHEWS@wisconsinearlychildhood.org. It's available in English and Spanish and is for child care center leaders and those doing home care.

What happens when you refuse to let early setbacks define your future? Join us on this episode of the Child Care Genius Podcast as Brian and Carol chat with Latisha Moore, a child care business owner from Washington, North Carolina, who chose to write her own story—one of growth, purpose, and impact. She was a high school dropout and teen mom who heard plenty of people tell her what she couldn't do. But instead of accepting the negative labels and assumptions that often come with that title, Latisha pushed forward and built a life of service, leadership, and success. Tune in as she shares her incredible journey—from working in mental health and opening a residential facility for girls to launching a thriving child care center licensed for 240 children. With no previous experience in the industry, Latisha followed her curiosity and calling to understand why so many young children needed behavioral support—and built a center that supports the whole child and the whole family. Now, as a proud child care center owner, Latisha continues to grow her business and her legacy with the support of Child Care Genius University. She credits the individualized coaching and community as a game-changer—helping her put systems in place, scale faster, and lead with confidence. Her story is a reminder that no matter where you start, with the right support and mindset, you can build something extraordinary.
