His colleagues were shocked when he volunteered for the Union army, but he was undeterred and later became known as one of the North's greatest heroes: On the second day at Gettysburg, after running out of ammunition at Little Round Top, he ordered his men to wield their bayonets in a desperate charge down a rocky slope that routed the Confederate attackers. Despite being wounded at Petersburg—and told by two surgeons he would die—Chamberlain survived the war, going on to be elected governor of Maine four times and serve as president of Bowdoin College. 1115-1130 6/8: On Great Fields: The Life and Unlikely Heroism of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain by Ronald C. It’s our first Guides Gone Wild Wednesday! Since tomorrow is Thanksgiving, I decided to push ‘publish’ a day early so you had something to listen to on your way to visit your family later, or more realistically, while you bang out a socially distant virtual Turkey Trot tomorrow morning….Today my special guest is Jenna Vanni, the founder of Woods + Waters Gear Exchange in Brunswick Maine. Woods + Waters is a specialty consignment shop focused on outdoor gear and clothing. It’s also the kind of small, downtown retailer that has been hammered by the pandemic. As we talk about more in this interview, the seed of Jenna’s idea was planted during her college years, when she started frequenting the local goodwill and consignment shops out of necessity, and stumbled across one of the OGs of specialty consignment, the Outdoor Gear Exchange. Fast forward a decade or so and Jenna had a solid, stable career in product development for a notable east coast gear and apparel company, but was feeling less excited by the collateral damage her industry’s constant focus on newer and better was inflicting on the environment and the people who made the products. Jenna got serious about her entrepreneurial dream, and in January 2019, Woods+Waters opened its door in downtown Brunswick, right up the road from Bowdoin college. Things were going predictably well until she slammed into the headwall of March, 2020.You’ll have to listen in to hear what happened next - AND get Jenna’s recommendation for the item of outdoor gear that you MUST buy consignment every time!Connect with Jenna and Woods + Waters Gear Exchange on both Instagram and Facebook @woods.waters.gear, and on the web at wwgearexchange.com.Other links from our conversation:Outdoor Gear Exchange - Burlington, VTIME (International Mountain Equipment) - North Conway, NHWorn Wear (renewed Patagonia)Renewal WorkshopGear AidSwitchbackrTeens to TrailsLiftedOutdoorsJenna profiled on CEImaine.orgI really, really hope you all will frequent your local small businesses as much and as safely as you can this coming holiday season. Season 6 continues! Recorded remotely on 3rd April 2020 during lockdown, Russell & Robert chat to leading artist Katherine Bradford, best known for her radiant paintings of swimmers, superheroes, ships and dreamy landscapes that critics describe as simultaneously representational and abstract, luminous, and richly metaphorical. We explore how Katherine changed her life aged 30 years old to become an artist moving with her twin children from Maine to New York City, making friends with Chris Martin and other passionate intense painters in 1980s Brooklyn: "It was quite a new idea. People were not going to Brooklyn to be artists. So we were in a sense pioneers and we all stuck together, we relied on each other.” We discuss landscape painting, lobsters and Brunswick Maine's cold water coast, the sense of night in her works and how she came to add figurative elements which in turn increased her audience and interest in her paintings. We learn of her admiration for Marsden Hartley’s clouds "logos of the sky", John Marin and Alex Katz who share a direct, simplified language of painting. We explore the influence of folk art and children’s art, the spiritual in art (à la Kandinsky), and how working with the influential CANADA gallery helped her to progress. We find out what success means to her and the themes within her new solo show Adams and Ollman gallery in Portland. We discuss the joy of Instagram and her love of other painter's works including Susan Rothenberg, Rothko, Rose Wylie, Chris Martin, Katherine Bernhardt and Nicole Eisenman.Follow @KatheBradford on Instagram and please also visit Katherine's galleries @CanadaGallery and @AdamsandOllman and visit their website to view Katherine's current solo exhibition 'Mother Joins The Circus' www.adamsandollman.com.
