Beware: This episode is FULL of haunted children, ghostly playmates, and eerie encounters that prove kids might just be the best (and creepiest) paranormal detectors out there. From a little girl's “imaginary” friend who turned out to be something far more sinister, to a child lured toward a portal by a spectral playmate, these stories will have you questioning every giggle you hear in an empty room. One listener's daughter was so terrified of her bedroom, she abandoned her favorite stuffed animals just to stay out of it—because “the boy” was there. And in a jaw-dropping twist, another listener found out their lost sibling was still watching over them… in the most chilling way possible. Oh, and let's not forget the black-eyed children. Because of course they're here too.

What is Advent hope, and how do we hold onto it when life feels overwhelming? In this first episode of a four-part Good Faith Advent series, Curtis Chang and author Sara Billups explore what true hope looks like for 21st-century Christians navigating consumer culture, climate anxiety, and widespread disillusionment with the church. Drawing on her experiences as a caregiver for her aging parents and as a Gen Xer shaped by the fundamentalism of the 1970s and 80s, Sara reflects on the Gospel story of Simeon, whose patient hope in the long-awaited birth of Jesus offers a timeless example for mid-lifers, millennials, and anyone yearning for hope in troubled times. With practical tips for sharing Advent's meaning with children, this episode provides encouragement for the whole family. Is it true that “you can't believe” anything you read? Can we consume news with a mindset other than cynicism, outrage, or fear? Host Curtis Chang welcomes journalist and author Jon Ward to discuss why Christians need to care about a well-functioning news culture. With an AP poll on mainstream media showing trust at an all-time low, they explore the reasons behind this crisis—political isolation, social media's influence, and potential media bias. Together, they offer a framework for healthy news consumption, focusing on the postures of spectator, student, and servant, while Jon shares his personal strategies for staying informed in a fractured media landscape. From the "First Voices Radio" archive: The words of the late John Trudell are from 1980 but his observations have stood the test of time and still ring true. John (1946-2015) was a poet, a fighter for Native American rights, an agitator, and many other things. But if you were to have asked him which of these descriptions best suits him he would have refused to be pinned down. "Actually I don't consider myself to be any of those things. They're things that I do…but they're parts of me. They're not the total." Indeed, Trudell was the complex sum of all that he saw, endured and accomplished during his 69 years, a time when he experienced more than most people might in several lifetimes. Two pieces – “The Werewolf of Defiance, Ohio” by Betsy Allen and “The Jersey Devil,” a poem by Jean Feldeisen – just might have you looking over your shoulder. And because we can't resist leaving you with a smile, we treat you to a fun spooky season memory: “Gomez Addams and the Pumpkin Caper” by Nancy Franklin.
