In this episode of ITXM Monthly, the Sakari, Sami, and Pasi discuss the watermelon effect and how to address it. They share their experiences from the SITS Expo in London and highlight the increasing interest in experience management. They also discuss the importance of focusing on the end-user experience and productivity, rather than just traditional SLA metrics. They provide practical examples of how to use experience data to identify and address watermelons in IT services. They also share customer case studies from Alhstrom, Campari Group, and Cargotec, who have successfully tackled the watermelon effect. The episode concludes with a reminder to measure the human-centric side of IT and to watch the Human-Centric IT webinar for more insights. Takeaways The watermelon effect refers to the discrepancy between the outward appearance of IT services (green on the surface) and the actual user experience (red on the inside). Traditional SLA metrics may not capture the true user satisfaction and productivity. To address the watermelon effect, it is important to focus on the end user experience and productivity. This can be achieved by measuring and analyzing experience data, identifying areas of lost time and frustration, and taking proactive steps to improve those areas. Customer case studies from Ahlstrom, Campari Group, and Cargotec demonstrate the successful implementation of human-centric IT practices to tackle the watermelon effect. These companies have incorporated experience level targets, regular data analysis, and continuous improvement processes. Measuring and addressing the watermelon effect requires a step-by-step approach, starting with measuring the human-centric side of IT and gradually cracking the watermelon piece by piece. The Human-Centric IT webinar provides further insights and practical tips for addressing the watermelon effect and improving the end user experience in IT services. The collapse of a deal involving two Finnish crane companies — Cargotec and Konecranes — as a result of regulatory obstacles has thrust into the spotlight differences in outlook between the UK and the European Union on mergers and acquisitions. The European Commission had been prepared to wave the deal through — albeit with undertakings from the companies to divest an array of assets; but the UK's Competition and Markets Authority concluded that the undertakings on the table wouldn't be enough to allay its fears of competitive harm. The deal highlighted and solidify the differences between those regulators that are prepared to work with undertakings; and those who aren't. Experience Management requires a change in working culture in order to truly focus on the new found existence for service delivery teams; end-user experience. With Experience Management, IT teams needs to change their way of thinking to creating services and delivering experience from the end-users perspective. Following on from Episode 19 of Happy in 15, HappySignals CGO, Pasi Nikkanen, discusses with Nina Remes, Service Manager for Cargotec about their journey to adopting an Experience Management Culture. In order to adopt this culture, it is of high importance to continually implement the Experience Management Framework. If you have missed the previous episode, we highly recommend you to go back and listen to it first.
You probably have often heard us refer to the concept of “Experience Management”. But this concept can be quite vague for newcomers as well as to seasoned IT veterans who may have been working on delivering great experiences for a while. Lucky for you, Experience Management has its own framework, stretching across 4 vital sections; Measure, Share, Identify, Improve. And I bet you are now thinking, that's all we are going to get, four more vague concepts. Wrong. In fact, we have gone a step further in this episode of Happy in 15 (sorry it's actually 20 minutes this time), and brought to you a real world example from one of our customers - Cargotec. In this episode, Nina Remes, Service Manager for Cargotec, joins our CGO, Pasi Nikkanen, to discuss the journey they have been on with experience data and experience management.

One of the great benefits I have had through volunteering for the Scrum Alliance has been the opportunity to work with a long list of inspiring and brilliant people. At the top of that list is Jukka Lindstrom. Jukka is someone who’s approach to exploring and solving problems is so different from my own that I felt like every time we collaborated on something, I got better at what I was doing just by working with him. A few years ago Jukka left his job as an Agile Coach and Trainer and started working full time with traditional organizations. At the start of 2016 he joined Cargotec to head up their Digital Transformation effort. If you think Agile Transition is hard, consider that it is only a small part of the transformation of digitizing a global organization with 11,000 people who are used to working in an analog world. In the first part of the interview Jukka and I talk about the work he’s been doing since leaving Reaktor and what it’s like trying to transform a company of 11,000 people to not just Agile, but a digitized way of working as well. Leaving the Agile Consulting world to go back into a traditional environment is a brave choice, but for Jukka, it presented an opportunity to test out what he had learned and see if he could help. While it has provided him with great learning experiences, it has also come with some tough moments. In the second part of the interview we focus on how what that career transition has been like and how he has avoided getting trapped in the doldrums when he is faced with working in a more traditional environment. Show Notes 00:09 Interview Begins 00:57 Jukka’s role at Cargotec and what the company does 02:37 The difference between Agile Transformation and Digital Transformation 07:36 The complexity of transformation at Cargotec 08:44 Why is this level of transformation so much harder than basic Agile transformation 10:10 The mindset shift 11:54 Placing a bet on technology when you don’t know exactly what you’ll be able to do with the result yet 13:00 transforming11,000 people … “that’s like 1,200-1,500 teams of people” 15:00 Where do you learn faster? And how do you stay inspired? 19:45 Realizing that the reason you feel stuck is because you aren’t being true to yourself 22:37 How to avoid playing the victim and taking ownership of your own learning and joy 24:30 “I’m not having fun… why am I doing this?” 25:27 If you can’t find fun in what you’re doing, you’re doing the wrong thing 25:55 Things Jukka does outside of work that helps him stay engaged and learning while he is at work 27:00 MIT’s ULab Links from the Interview Cargotec Website: http://www.cargotec.com Singapore Cargo Port Timelapse Video https://youtu.be/HrZg96L8yaY MIT’s ULab Course https://www.edx.org/course/u-lab-leading-emerging-future-mitx-15-671-1x Leading from the Emerging Future by Otto Scharmer http://amzn.to/2dJJ1TL Reaktor https://reaktor.com If you’d like to contact Jukka LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/jukkalindstrom Twitter https://twitter.com/jukka_lindstrom
