The Energy Transition: Why Solar?

Navigating Our World

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 21, 2022 29:41

I'm recording this as tens of thousands of people and more than 100 heads of state are gathering in Egypt for the COP27 climate summit – the United Nations “conference of the parties.” In his opening remarks at COP27, the UN Secretary General framed the fight against global warming as a battle for human survival; he said “We are on a highway to climate hell with our foot on the accelerator... Humanity has a choice: cooperate or perish.”I'm Erika Pagel. I'm the Chief Investment Officer for Sustainable Investing and a portfolio manager at Brown Advisory. As investors, we know that climate risk is real. And we know that we cannot achieve real climate action without a material shift to renewable energy sources. So, as we think about driving toward a lower carbon economy during this NOW series on the energy transition, we want to understand different opportunities and different perspectives across the energy landscape. In this episode we are diving into renewable infrastructure – as it stands today, as well as the opportunities going forward – in the US, in Europe, and in developing economies.Among renewables, solar power is growing rapidly. In the US, solar is expected to account for almost half of new electric generating capacity this year. Meanwhile, the Inflation Reduction Act is expected to create significant job growth to build out solar and other renewable infrastructure.Against this backdrop, I sat down with Raghu Belur, the Co-founder and Chief Products Officer of Enphase Energy.Enphase has revolutionized the solar industry through its super-efficient microinverter technology. The company dominates the US solar residential market and has evolved to focus on “smart” systems that enable homeowners to manage their own energy usage – to save money and create climate resilience.Raghu is at heart an innovator and – as you will hear – is passionate about the opportunities that solar offers – in terms of economics, job creation, and energy security – as well as climate action. Raghu says “first and foremost, coal needs to go away” and prescribes a future where solar and other renewable energy sources enable people around the world to thrive while decreasing our reliance on fossil fuels.Let's dive into the conversation.---As investors, we know that climate risk is real—and that we cannot achieve real climate action without a material shift to renewable energy sources. So, as we think about driving toward a lower carbon economy, we want to understand different opportunities and perspectives across the energy landscape. In this episode we are diving into renewables and, specifically into solar power. Brown Advisory's Erika Pagel sits down with Raghu Belur, the Co-founder and Chief Products Officer of Enphase Energy, which has revolutionized the solar industry through its super-efficient microinverter technology and dominates the U.S. solar residential market. Erika and Raghu explore solar—in terms of economics, job creation, energy security and climate action.---The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the speaker(s) and do not necessarily reflect those of Brown Advisory. Ajeet Singh is a risk taker. There's no other way to describe someone who's done the things he has and accomplished so much in such a short amount of time. An immigrant, entrepreneur, and and most importantly a disruptor, Singh has constructed two multi-billion dollar entities from the ground up. Throughout his journey, he's been guided by two principles: his out-of-the-box thinking and curiosity about how he can improve people's lives. As a young entrepreneur working in Silicon Valley during the big data days, Singh noticed the data and analytics space was ripe for disruption. So he did something about it. First with Nutranix and now with ThoughtSpot, where he's working to solve some of the world's biggest problems by democratizing data for all. On this episode of The Data Chief, Singh, Co-founder and Executive Chairman at ThoughtSpot, dives into some of the biggest challenges facing CDOs in 2021, why organizations must empower their leadership teams to drive meaningful change, and how big tech can be utilized for good moving forward.Main Takeaways:- The cloud is here to stay: Large enterprises are increasingly moving their data to the cloud. The challenge now for CEOs and CDOs is not “if” they will adopt cloud but “when,” and how quickly they can get there while maintaining their current momentum.- Empower your leaders to drive change: It's easy to create new C-level positions, but real innovation and transformation starts with empowering your leadership with the required mandates and resources to empower their teams.- Build your culture with intention: Every organization inherently has a culture and you must be deliberate about how you build that culture. Every department should reflect your core principles and create a space for individuals and teams to thrive.About AjeetAjeet Singh is the co-founder and Executive Chairman at ThoughtSpot, a company revolutionizing analytics with search and AI. MarketScale Technology
Risk and Compliance Solutions for Payment Service Providers with Jose Caldera

MarketScale Technology

When a payment service provider works with a customer, there are always precautions needed. Jose Caldera, Chief Products Officer, Acuant (formally IdentityMind), knows the key to mitigating risks for the payment service provider is to enable risk assessment solutions at the start of the onboarding process. Some companies operate in high-risk environments, and other companies may deal with money lending or other money services. A payment service provider needs to assess any situation where a business provides a service with a high fraud risk attached. “As a payment service provider that has to offer services and onboard these clients, you have to look at the types and dimensions of risks associated with them,” Caldera said. With evolving processes and technology, the underwriting process of onboarding clients has also transformed. “There is a new world of payment-providing services that don't necessarily follow the same underwriting practices that have historically been part of this market,” Caldera said. With the added complexity of today's customer needs, government regulations require more stringent protocols for payment service providers to follow when underwriting and onboarding clients. “When a payment service provider is looking at a business, they're also looking at the structure of that business and making sure that business is not behaving like a shell company or cleaning illicit money,” Caldera said. The added levels of scrutiny and examination required for assessing today's businesses need new technology to do this type of review in real-time.

David Cancel is the co-founder and CEO of Drift, one of the fastest growing companies in the marketing space. A former engineer, he's also a podcaster and author. Today he joins Christopher Lochhead to talk about building massive technological startups, sabbaticals, books, and why conversational marketing is the future. "For me myself, engineer to tech to product to now, CEO... they're kinda like a progression of the same thing... It's like I'm trying to create our own world." - David Cancel Three Things We Learned Anxiety-ridden break When they first put up Drift, David and his team figured to create a tradition of taking a sabbatical every three years. But his turn to take a temporary leave from work came with the worst possible timing. His wife pointed out the fact that if he didn't do it now, no one in the company was going to follow through, and so with tons of anxiety, he cashed in on the leave. Pulling off a sabbatical with a great team While his learning sabbatical offered lots of time to meditate and examine his life and willingly be at the beck and call of his daughter, some things broke. They were nothing he couldn't fix though. He had his management team whom he could lean on while he set an example for all of Drift's 190 and some employees to thank for that. A startup faster than a rocket ship Prior to Drift, David was the Chief Products Officer at Hubspot, another hugely successful company. The culmination of his experience from being part of large-scale bodies aided in growing Drift. And now his business is doing amazing, faster than any other company within and without their category. Building a startup is one tough endeavor. Growing one is even more difficult because then you will have to learn how to brake and not implode. But with a team behind him willing to stay true to their visions from the get-go—sabbaticals included—, David thinks they can do it all. Bio: David Cancel is a serial entrepreneur, podcast host (Seeking Wisdom) and angel investor/advisor. Best known for creating hypergrowth companies, products and product teams at companies such as Drift.com, HubSpot, Performable, Ghostery and Compete. David has been featured by media outlets such as The New York Times, Forbes, Fortune, Wired and Fast Company. David has guest lectured on entrepreneurship at Harvard, Harvard Business School, MIT, MIT's Sloan School of Management, Bentley and other Universities.
