Giorgio Andonian is the Managing Director at FOCUS Investment Banking, where he specializes in mergers and acquisitions within the Consumer and Automotive Aftermarket industries. He joined FOCUS in 2019, bringing over 15 years of operational experience, including his role as Vice President of a regional tire chain in Southern California, where he oversaw sales, marketing, finance, and human resources, ultimately preparing the business for a successful exit to a private equity platform. Giorgio holds a MBA with an emphasis in finance from Pepperdine University's Graziadio School of Business and Management and maintains several professional licenses, including Series 79, Series 82, Series 63, and a California Real Estate License. In this episode… The tire and auto repair industry is experiencing a wave of consolidation as shop owners consider mergers, acquisitions, and succession planning. What steps should business owners take to maximize the value of their business, whether they plan to sell or grow? According to Giorgio Andonian, Managing Director at FOCUS Investment Banking, preparation is key to achieving the best outcome. Business owners should start by evaluating their financial structure, understanding fair market rent, and optimizing operations well before considering a sale. Giorgio emphasizes that having a clear succession plan, even if an immediate sale isn't in the works, can significantly impact long-term profitability and stability. Additionally, for those looking to expand rather than exit, securing the right capital and investment partners can help fuel growth while maintaining control over their business. On this episode of Gain Traction, Mike Edge chats with Giorgio about market trends in the tire industry, how to prepare for an acquisition, and the role of private equity in fueling business growth. They also discuss why many shop owners overlook key financial details, such as fair market rent, and how proper planning can prevent costly mistakes. "Understanding your corporate structure, like C Corp versus S Corp, can significantly impact the taxes you pay upon selling." "It's not just about the sale price; the right buyer ensures your company's legacy and employees are in good hands." "Our industry experience allows us to identify operational improvements that can enhance profitability before a sale." Action Steps:  Assess your financials: Conduct a thorough evaluation of your tire shop's financial performance, including profit margins and detailed financial statements, to present an attractive profile to potential buyers. Enhance curb appeal: Improve your shop's exterior by cleaning surfaces, updating signage and lighting, and organizing display areas to create a positive first impression. Streamline operations: Optimize inventory management and invest in employee training to increase efficiency and customer satisfaction, making your business more appealing to buyers. Gather legal documents: Compile all necessary legal paperwork, such as business licenses, tax filings, employee contracts, and insurance policies, to ensure compliance and facilitate a smooth transaction.  Set a realistic price: Determine a fair market value for your tire shop based on thorough market analysis to attract serious buyers and facilitate a successful sale. The day before I interviewed Dr. Dana Sumpter, a new mother wrote in on the Becoming Mama & Beyond Facebook group about working during the pandemic and how it’s impacted her mentally, physically, and more. I couldn’t believe how timely our episode was and how impactful our conversation would be. I met Dana through another colleague who shared that she was running a research project on working mothers during covid. Being a research nut myself I couldn’t wait to hear more. I also wanted to have an opportunity to connect with another working mother in the field so I reached out to her. Dr. Dana Sumpter is an Associate Professor of Management at Pepperdine University's Graziadio School of Business. Formerly a Vice President of Human Resources at Citigroup, she draws from her experience as an expatriate in Asia and her research on behavior at work in teaching graduate-level cross-cultural management and diversity. She is a working mom, with two young kids, and has used the inspiration of her personal experience to drive her current research agenda, studying the experiences of working mothers during the pandemic.  A few weeks before our interview - Dana interviewed me as part of their research study which should be coming out to publication soon. Today you’ll hear highlights from their findings and much much more. Some of the things you’ll learn today are: The silver lining of covid 19- whether that is changing careers, adding in passions, spending more time with family  The expectations that we have on ourselves and that women tend to put higher expectations on themselves rather than men The motherhood mental load The difference between integrators vs segmentors  How managers can be more compassionate and empowering during this time Having difficult conversations with your spouse about roles and responsibilities And so much more. If you are a working mother you’ll absolutely want to listen in to our episode today. Dana gives incredible tips on how to navigate covid as a working mom! If you want to get in touch with Dana you can write her at Dana.sumpter@pepperdine.edu  or listen to her TEDx Talk it is linked here: https://www.ted.com/talks/dana_sumpter_don_t_underestimate_working_mothers

She has published in professional journals and has been quoted in various popular outlets. Dr. Sumpter's research has received grants from the Center for Innovation Research in Cultural Intelligence and Leadership, and UC Irvine’s Center for Organizational Research. Her recent award-winning international management case focused on a woman’s expatriate human resource experience in Oman. Across 10 Asia-Pacific nations, Professor Sumpter led live executive training and coached executives on people management skills. She is an avid traveler, who has spent time in more than 30 countries (and counting!).In this episode, Stew and Dana discuss her new research, with her colleague Mona Zanhour, on mothers during the pandemic. Dana discusses best practices for working mothers, their partners in parenting, and their employers, including how to engage in meaningful dialogue toward viable new approaches for what, where, and how things get done, and by whom in the domestic sphere. She shares ideas about how to make self-care a priority because of how crucial it is in enabling working mothers to cope well with the intense pressures of our time. And they discuss the importance of hope and the potential silver linings in these dark and difficult times. Here then is an invitation, a challenge, for you, once you’ve listened to the conversation. Ask yourself this question, if you’re a working mother or want to develop an idea to help one you might know: What small step can you take now to better care of yourself and how by doing so will you increase your capacity to help those who depend on you? That has all led me to my guest, Professor Darrol Stanley, my professor for finance to share his wealth of knowledge and experience with you all today. I loved Professor Stanley’s class because it was as old school as it gets, and he remained focused on teaching us the traditional value investing principles passed down from the greats: from Benjamin Graham to Warren Buffet, and we even spent time at the beginning of one class discussing Professor Sanjay Bakshi’s contributions to the world of investing. Why is there a leadership gender gap, and what do we do about it? Dr. Shawn Andrews is a keynote speaker and organizational consultant. She has over two decades of corporate experience in the biopharmaceutical industry with a strong history of leading, educating and inspiring others. She has helped thousands of leaders improve and develop their leadership skills and emotional intelligence, and most recently released her first book called The Power Of Perception: Leadership, Emotional Intelligence, and The Gender Divide. Today we talk with Shawn about transformational leadership vs transactional leadership, how women and men approach leadership differently, and the barriers that keep women from the upper echelon of leadership. We also discuss the power of perception and how that plays a role in leadership circles, and strategies for bridging the leadership gender gap.  Whether you are a woman climbing the corporate ladder or a man in an existing leadership role seeking to understand how to work more effectively with women leaders, our conversation with Dr. Andrews will be well worth your time.  As Shawn summarizes so well, we will all be better off when both women and men are equally invited to bring their natural strengths and skills to the boardroom tables of the world. Key Takeaways 1) 5.2% women lead S&P 500 companies = 26 female CEOs vs 474 male CEOs. The numbers are improving but we are still a long way from gender balance. 2) 60% of women in US and Europe go on to earn a bachelor's degree. Women do very well in school however the workplace is more of a masculine environment, where women's strengths are not as valued. 3) Men and women are socialized differently right from the time we are born – in the colors we're dressed in and the games we play as children. Boys play competitive games, where girls' games are about the process, collaboration and getting along. We take these roles into the workplace as adults.  It shows up in many different ways. 4) Men and women approach meetings differently – men line up their ducks beforehand whereas women come to the meeting ready to share their ideas, not realizing that the real meeting has already happened. 5) In conversations, men will only nod their head when they are in agreement. Women tend to nod during the conversation, as an acknowledgement that they heard what was being said and as an encouragement to keep going, not necessarily as agreement. Men may be perceived as more decisive in this case, whereas women may be seen as agreeable to everything. It's not right or wrong, it's about perception. 6) Men and women have been shown to be equally effective leaders however their styles are generally different.  7) Transactional leadership is based on an even exchange of transactions between leader and follower. This style of leadership is associated with men more than women. Transformational leadership is based on even levels of cooperation, collaboration and teamwork between leader and follower. It's also built on collective decision making and problem solving.  This is associated with women more than men.  Both are effective, however transformational leadership will sustain longer in organizations today. If women would leverage their natural transformational leadership skills, they would do very well in leadership roles.   8) Accessing informal networks – Men are very good at networking with each other, however women have more expansive networks. If women would leverage their networks more, they would go a long way to gaining access to key people. 9) Biases – There are many women with young children who would love to travel and take on other assignments. There are also many men who would not want to travel or take on other assignments. Do not assume either is true, ask. 10) Women – Learn to take more credit for your successes. Jerry's client and coworker relationships are tailor made   Jerry Folly-Kossi is a sharp-dressed man. And that isn't by accident. When he isn't busy as a financial analyst in the Business Valuation and Litigation Group at Hemming Morse, he's running his own custom menswear company, Swell Attitude. We talk about how his fashion was influenced by growing up in Paris with his family originally from the Ivory Coast. And when he isn't designing custom men's clothes, he's practicing martial arts or playing soccer in a very competitive league with former professional players. Jerry graduated from UCLA with BA's in both Economics and Political Science. He later went on to receive his MBA from the Graziadio School of Business & Management at Pepperdine University. Before joining Hemming Morse, Jerry worked for numerous Fortune 500 companies in the field of Investment Banking, Consulting and Accounting, namely Ernst & Young, Merrill Lynch and Burr Pilger & Mayer.     Other pictures of Jerry (click to enlarge) Jerry displays his Swell Attitude custom clothing at a trunk show.
