Welcome to an interview with the author of Deep Purpose: The Heart and Soul of High-Performance Companies, Ranjay Gulati. In his book, Ranjay reveals the fatal mistakes leaders unwittingly make when attempting to implement a reason for being. Moreover, he shows how companies can embed purpose much more deeply than they currently do, delivering impressive performance benefits that reward customers, suppliers, employees, shareholders, and communities alike. To get purpose right, leaders must fundamentally change not only how they execute it but also how they conceive of and relate to it. Ranjay Gulati is the Paul R. Lawrence MBA Class of 1942 Professor and the former Unit Head of the Organizational Behavior Unit at Harvard Business School. Until recently, he chaired the Advanced Management Program, the flagship senior leader executive program, at the school. Professor Gulati has been ranked as one of the top ten most-cited academics in the fields of economics and business by ISI-Incite and has received similar recognition from The Economist, Financial Times, and the Economist Intelligence Unit. Professor Gulati studies how “resilient” organizations—those that prosper both in good times and bad—drive growth and profitability. His work bridges strategy (establishing clear strategic pillars for growth), organizational design (reimagining purposeful and collaborative organizational systems), and leadership (fostering inspired, courageous, and caring execution). Wind production in America's wind basket, a 14-state region including Iowa and Kansas, fell off the table in June, yet the region has served its power load during the hot summer. In this episode of Grid Talk host Marty Rosenberg interviews Lanny Nickell who is executive vice president and CEO for the Southwest Power Pool. Nickell talks about the summer's wind mystery.“We have over 32,000 megawatts of nameplate wind capacity in SPP. Again, that's across 14 states. On June 6 of this year at 10 o'clock in the morning, out of the 32,000 megawatts of nameplate wind capacity, only 110 megawatts of energy was actually produced,” he said. “That's less than 0.4% and what's remarkable about that number is that you would expect across a broad geographic footprint covering all or parts of 14 states that you would see more wind than what we saw.”It's alarming because during our peak conditions, we expect to see a little over 5,000 megawatts of wind production,” he said. The system avoided blackouts and brownouts but not by much. “It was stressed, absolutely.”Lanny Nickell – As executive vice president and chief operating officer, Lanny Nickell is responsible for SPP's provision of engineering, operations, and information technology services to members and customers. These services include coordination of reliable power system operations, development, design and administration of energy markets, development of transmission expansion plans needed to facilitate delivery of reliable and affordable energy to consumers, and administration of resource adequacy policies.Nickell received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tulsa and is a graduate of Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program
I did spot a few errors in the episodes notes:Joining us for the second of three episodes recorded live at last month's Lead Innovation Summit is Brie Olson, CEO of PacSun, a leading lifestyle brand that sells apparel and related items designed for teens and young adults. In a wide-ranging interview we explore how to be remarkably relevant with GenZ customers. In particular we dig into crowd-sourcing customer insight via TikTok and other social media platforms to inform merchandising strategies, how PacSun's purpose guides their strategy, ways they're breaking down gender barriers online and in-store, and the important role collaborations play in brand differentiation. We also learn about PacSun's unusual success in the Metaverse, how they maintain a culture of experimentation, and how they plan to stay ahead of fast growing online competition (spoiler alert: it centers on ethical and sustainable production and leveraging the power of harmonized retail). We end getting Brie's take on the criticality of empathy and vulnerability in leadership. As usual we kick-off with a fast-paced review of the week in retail news, including what recent macro news portends for the future--and what role Barbie, Oppenheimer, Taylor Swift, and Beyonce may play. Then we move on to dissect Amazon's blockbuster quarter and reboot of its grocery dreams, before wondering why Wall Street seems so enamored with Wayfair's decidedly less than awesome earnings report. We also speculate about whether Nike's new fitness studios might rain on Peloton's revamp efforts. Data is becoming more and more and more prevalent. In this episode, I chat with Dr. Gordon Chiu about how data uncovers many mysteries of life.Dr. Gordon Chiu completed Wharton's Advanced Management Program and Harvard's Business Analytics Program during the latter part of 2022, and co-founded his startup Phenegra in February of 2023. Gordon is pleased to share that Phenegra has won the 2023 Global Tough Technology Prize in the Harvard Business School Alumni New Venture Competition. HBS regards Tough Tech ventures as those working on transformative technology that solves the world's most important challenges through the convergence of breakthrough science, engineering, and leadership. While his pitch presentation was notably unconventional, Gordon's technology is undeniable. Phenegra will initially commercialize Dr. Chiu's discovery of reactive graphene as Graphalt, an asphalt additive that improves the durability, bonding, and oil retention of conventional asphalt. This new asphalt composite is proven to be an effective material for making enduring pothole repairs. With the unrelenting proliferation of potholes, dump-and-go temporary repairs, and the emergence of electric vehicles that are more than 30% heavier than their gasoline and diesel counterparts, Graphalt will play a significant role in reinforcing transportation infrastructure and mitigating soil, water and air pollution from desiccated asphalt worldwide.

He has expanded the business to 25+ global markets and pivoted the business to be a strategic digital transformation partner to the insurance industry, including 7 of the top 10 US insurers and the largest global broker. He is an active contributor, thought leader and speaker at industry events and conferences. Prior to his current role, Raghav was the Global Lead Partner for EXL's strategic accounts and co-head for EXL's Insurance Transformation business. He has extensive experience of implementing and managing strategic client engagements. He is a dynamic leader with over 20 years of experience. Raghav has a Bachelors degree in Economics from St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi, and has attended the Advanced Management Program at Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. Highlights from the Show Raghav runs the Global Insurance practice for EXL, which he's been with for over 19 years EXL is seeing so many changes on the back of the pandemic across so many carriers, by at least three years in Raghav's eyes The focus has been on digitization and CX, especially Innovation has been held back in the insurance industry for a very long time, with some carriers choosing to create innovative units, and they have been best positioned to change 60-70% of the disruption in the industry has been focused on Personal Lines and distribution When this can be done as a science rather than an art – more use of tech, of advanced models, in using AI in decision making and processing Think about an organization that is hyper-connected with customer experience at its core, without silos between the major functions, product lines and operations that can leverage real-time data and insights, predictive and prescriptive As an example from a Workers Compensation claims payment: Can an AI or ML algorithm look across claims that informs loss control when it sees patterns to try to stop those claims from occurring in the future by changing behaviors and practices This insight comes from being hyper-connected at the scale of minute data, in real-time This creates fluidity of insurance – we have all of these different insurance policies, but as a customer, we'd really just prefer to have everything embedded in our life providing the right coverage in the right place without worrying about which policy is at play when or how The use of data in a seamless fashion will mean the traditional insurance hubs of Hartford or London will see competition from new places like Singapore and Hong Kong, driven by how data is being utilized Whether from the inside or outside, to spot where disruption will come from, you have to reimagine Insurance with the customer at the core in a way we have never done before Right now, the innovation is happening in small slices, but the money is coming in and data is being utilized in a way that we may get the Uber or Amazon level of disruption that brings about fluidity of insurance Soft markets push us to look at efficiency, but also to ensure we align intensity with severity With the vision Raghav has for fluidity of insurance, there is no way to make that a reality with any systems or structures today, so it will take totally rethinking the approach to insurance, which may take a push from big tech to enable With the constraints the industry faces, this future may be very hard to realize, so we need to be aware of our constraints while thinking about what could be enabled if they were removed But these constraints are usually self-imposed, and to customers, the ways we divide the business don't matter; insurance is insurance to them and the divisions we impose between products, Personal and Commercial, Underwriting and Claims, are just annoyances; they just want to be served, and we need to rethink that structure This episode is brought to you by EXL (exlservice.com).
