We're doing opera again, and hopefully Jon didn't mess up with picking Arianna to be the guest this episode. The two delve into the world of The Tales of Hoffmann, discussing love and loss, and the wild choices made in this film. Jon also reached out to Lauren to give more context for the opera, and hopefully see if his wild theories hold water.Arianna's Socials -Instagram/TikTok: @ladyaria_Website: www.ariannaarmon.comLauren's Instagram: @lagizz_sangsB*tch Please Instagram: @bitchplsepodPodcast Socials -Email: butasongpod@gmail.comFacebook: @butasongpodInstagram: @butasongpodTikTok: @butasongpodTwitter: @butasongpodNext episode: The Chipmunk Adventure!
We're taking a wild ride this time Doomers! Our version of the Chipmunks along with the Chipettes take a bet with a ridiculously wealthy, vaguely incestuous sibling couple, Klaus & Claudia (and Sophie) as to who would win in a hot air balloon race around the world. Of course this is just a cover for smuggling millions in diamonds. Will our heroes figure out the dastardly plan before Dave makes it back from his European trip? Back to the 80s we go, with a movie based on a franchise that got its start in the 50s. That's right, it's Alvin and the Chipmunks (and importantly: the Chipettes), off on a hot-air balloon adventure around the world. There's diamond smugglers, bad guys with gold teeth, and baby penguins to be found on this adventure, but does this globe-trotting adventure featuring different cultures as written by white people still hold up? Our new friend @ItsLuckyPurr joins us to discuss one of her & Chid's favorite childhood films 'The Chipmunk Adventure.'The Chipmunk Adventure is a 1987 American animated musical-comedy film based on the Saturday-morning cartoon series Alvin and the Chipmunks. Directed by Janice Karman and written by Karman and Ross Bagdasarian Jr., it stars the voices of Karman, Bagdasarian, and Dody Goodman, and follows the Chipmunks and the Chipettes as they go on a hot air balloon race around the world that is the cover for a diamond smuggling ring. There are lots of spoilers for this film in this episode, if you don't want us to ruin a movie for you that came out in 1987 we suggest watching the movie (you can find it if you search on vimeo for free) before listening to this episode. We rate the movie on the Rounding Down scale of A to Z.At the end of the episode there is a very amazing conversation about the band Creed, so you're going to have to listen to the whole episode to hear that. Due to foolish oversight and human error, 99% of this week's episode is lost forever, so to make up for it, Jer flies solo to provide a commentary track for 1987's "The Chipmunk Adventure" directed by Janice Karman. At least for the time being, you can watch along with the movie on YouTube, or you can rent or purchase the movie from available streaming platforms, or you can just skip this episode entirely if it's not your thing! And I suppose this is an awkward time to mention that we have a Patreon! You can "check out our tiers" at patreon.com/90under90. This month's exclusive episode on the movie "Boogie Nights" is available now, as well as so many other episodes!
Pitch your voice up a few octaves and brace yourself for some unbelievably racist stereotypes as we race off with the bizarrely sexual children's film The Chipmunk Adventure. Would this movie have made any more sense if we'd been able to watch it as a cohesive whole rather than through YouTube scraps? Who decided turning the Chipmunks into money laundering mules would make a good plot for a kid's movie? Are Klaus and Claudia siblings or… something more? And, most disturbingly, why must there be so many upskirt shots of the Chipettes? Please direct all questions to our therapists because this is the episode where we tangle with how deeply this movie imprinted on some of our psyches. Flash fiction writer Kayleigh Shoen (or as we like to call her: Princess of Soup) joined us again to talk about all things Punky Brewster related after we watched The Perils of Punky! We started by watching this commercial for a Punky doll. This commercial is super freaky because it starts with a doll and then shows an entire family of Punky clones. WHAT IS HAPPENING???Anyway, they say at the end that Brandon and Glomer are sold separately so all of us were like, “Wait, who’s Glomer?” And that is how we ended up watching this interminable segment of the Punky Brewster cartoon, Glomer’s Story. There’s a part two, but none of us could bear to spend another several minutes on this one. Glomer was voiced by Frank Welker, a prolific voice actor we have seen before in such things as The Chipmunk Adventure, where he voiced the villain’s two yappy dogs. Fun fact: he was also voice of the anaconda in Anaconda. From here we moved on to some commercials for things Kayleigh remembered from her childhood. We started with Get in Shape, Girl. This was a whole toy enterprise that revolved around telling little girls they really needed to workout more… cool. Kayleigh had the Get in Shape, Girl barre.Kayleigh was so into this leotard and tights aesthetic that she wore it under her regular clothes. Ahhh, the 80s!This led us to discuss LA Gear and British Knights shoes and the terribleness of women’s fashion and its lack of pockets. From there we went to a non-gendered exercise toy: Pogoball! We heard this as telling us we could become a Pogoballmancer. Please, someone make us this fan art.We looked into whether adult sized Pogoballs exist and found these terrifying Kangaroo Sky Runner shoes. Then we moved to She Ra. We watched a sequence of these and at first weren’t into the song, but then it took over our brains…From She Ra to Frosta and Catra… who meowsFinally the Crystal CastleKayleigh and Julia both had some of these dolls, but Geoffrey had some awesome He Man action figures. We then talked about the various He Man cartoons and movies. Which… is maybe a little bit of a sneak peek at what you can expect to hear from us next… Meanwhile, Kayleigh introduced us to the concept of the collectible Masters of the Universe sticker book, where you had a book, but in order to see the pictures, you had to buy a tone of sticker packs that were sold in mixed lots like baseball cards. One of Geoffrey's improv group members joins us to talk about a Christmas special he loved as a kid: The Rankin and Bass stop motion Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town! You can catch Fouhy in Improvised History at the Democracy Center in Harvard Square, or in Junebug, a Firefly-inspired improv show (which our own Geoffrey is in, too). The next Junebug appearance is February 23rd, 2020 at Improv Boston. Image Description: Kris Kringle as a young red-haired man with a menacing grimace. Here's Fouhy's hazy summary:"It's about the origin story of Santa. I think he's an orphan adopted by elves and has an amazing facility with making wooden toys. Wooden toys are Important in this film. There's something in here about mysterious parentage and him being found with some item that has SC branded on it? For reasons I don't remember he goes out into the world on his own. I think it has to do with finding a wife? I know at some point he meets Mrs. Claus and that's a whole thing. He finds some ancient, evil ice warlock and convinces him to become good with the power of wooden toys. Then he finds his first humans, who are in a town run by a miserly burgomeister (the Rankin-Bass films can have some weird anti-European sentiment in them). I think this is where the future Mrs. Claus comes in? Anyway, he also convinces the burgomeister to become a better man through, again, the power of wooden toys. Then I think he found his workshop in the North Pole and the rest is history."Was he right? Mostly! This is the second thing we've watched where a hapless penguin ends up in the wrong part of the world (the first was The Chipmunk Adventure). Is this part of a larger trend? #PenguinWatchThis movie's narrator was Fred Astaire (!!!), and one of the other voice actors in this was Paul Frees, the Ghost Host in Disney's Haunted Mansion ride. Geoffrey also noted that Paul Frees was in Flight of Dragons, and pledged that we will cover that at some point. Are you a Flight of Dragons fan? Dan Seitz of Marvel's Flying Monkeys (a podcast where they discuss every Marvel movie minute by minute) is back to discuss commercials and … other things … related to The Chipmunk Adventure. We spend a lot of time talking about Will Smith back when he was newly popular as The Fresh Prince (even before Bel Air!) and one of his early videos: I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson. Geoffrey mentions 1-900-909-JEFF, which was a hotline you could call to hear messages from DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. And then probably your parents would get super mad because it would add a charge to your phone bill. We also, as promised, watched the "Girls of Rock and Roll" scene from Malibu Bikini Shop, a movie we would DEFINITELY NOT show to a child. We talk about many of the things that make this scene disturbing, including the bit where a child excitedly asks for a super sexualized bikini. Romy Mehlman, if you're listening, definitely let us know where you are now! What's your life like? We'd love to hear.Anyway, after that, we felt like we needed something to restore our faith in humanity, so we watched a charming video of some people in Colorado doing their own homage to the Chipmunks and Chipettes version of the song. From the choreography to the costumes, this group nailed it! Also, the chipmunk costumes definitely look like turtleneck druid robes, and Geoffrey really wants to see a D&D player character or monster guide for a Chipmunk character. Who will make this? Could it be you?And of course we did also watch some actual commercials, too. We started with a Chipmunks VHS box set commercial, including such classics as Batmunk and Funny We Shrunk the Adults. Has anyone ever seen these? Julia kind of wants to… From there we descended into the depths of Chipmunks album commercials. Namely Chipmunk Punk and The Chipmunks 35th Birthday Party, which alerted us to the fact that a Chipmunks version of Achy Breaky Heart exists. This made Julia and Geoffrey wish for a Chipmunks version of "Wrecking Ball" by Miley Cyrus. And… good news, everyone! Clearly we were not the only people who wished for this. You can find several versions if you search. If you're having fun listening to us, please tell your friends about us! Rate and review us! follow us on Twitter where we're @thisiswhy_pod! Dan Seitz of Marvel's Flying Monkeys (a podcast where they discuss every Marvel movie minute by minute) joins us to discuss one of his personal childhood faves, 1987's The Chipmunk Adventure. This one is a WILD ride! We reminisce about USA's Up All Night with Rhonda Shear, and dive down a bunch of weird rabbit holes related to the production of this movie. If you need a Chipmunk Masseuse (or to be part of a roomful of hotties doing yoga and pilates while Madonna checks out their bodies and knows she's satisfied), you might want to hire Siri D. Galliano. The music in this movie is written by a bunch of talented songwriters, including Terry Shaddick, who wrote "Physical" (popularized by Olivia Newton John), Donna Weiss, who co-wrote "Bette Davis Eyes" along with Kim Carnes, Randy Goodrum, who wrote a bunch of hit songs, and Barry De Vorzon, who wrote a song for a different movie that later became a top hit as "Nadia's Theme" after it was used as a background for a montage of gymnast Nadia Comaneci's performances in a recap of the 1976 Olympics. The song was also used as the theme for The Young and the Restless. Of course The Chipmunk Adventure also included songs originally written by the Chipmunks' creator, Ross Bagdasarian, father of the current Chipmunks IP owner (and successor as the voice of Dave, Alvin, and Simon). Fun Fact: he named his alter ego David Seville because he was stationed in Seville, Spain during World War II.We also talk a bit about the egregiously racist stuff in this one, from the really horrible lecherous child sheikh and hostile jungle natives scenes to the Mexican festival with a Carmen Miranda number. Carmen Miranda was Brazilian and felt frustrated with the way she wasn't allowed to break out of a specific stereotype of "Latin culture" in her career. She's beloved and credited with paving the way for popular tropicalia artists of the 1960s, but it's complicated, and none of that is something The Chipmunk Adventure acknowledges or engages with when using one of her songs for a scene in a country that is definitely not Brazil. And then also we can't forget the sombrero shaped Taco Bell kind of establishment plopped in the middle of Mexico city, which Julia thought would fit right in at South of the Border, a roadside attraction in South Carolina with its own complicated race-related history. This Chipmunks journey is a wild ride, and the After These Messages episode coming up promises to be something else, too, since we're committed to watching part of Malibu Bikini Shop…

We did an almost 2 hour show on Summer Blockbuster Movies. We talked some huge ones you all know and love and some more obscure ones. Everything from the Chipmunk Adventure, to True Lies, to Congo, to Water World.
3 sentient singing adolescent male animals and their undercharacterized and oversexualized female counterparts are tricked into traveling the world to trade diamonds for cash with a variety of stereotypes. And there's music! Wyatt Tall joins the show to help us crack the nut that is the very high concept animated children's movie, The Chipmunk Adventure (1986).
