Robert DeLong and Vampire Weekend Bassist, Chris Baio, converse about how Vampire Weekend was formed back in college and what you can expect to hear from Chris's new album, 'Dead Hand Control,' under his new solo project, Baio.
Baio is the creative outlet for songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Chris Baio. He has released three records, most recently "Dead Hand Control" which arrived in January 2021 and is available now on vinyl and all music streaming services. He is also a member of indie/alternative group, Vampire Weekend. We talk having his own creative space, recording straight off tour, growing into his singing voice, starting from concepts, song titles, "Dead Hand Control", writing around broader themes, nuclear anxiety, romance, breaking songs down technically, nine minute songs, referencing other artists, vocal effects, releasing songs in pairs, suits and how making albums helps cultivate happiness. “I didn’t like curse words when I was real young, so my dad would read Spin and get black ink and blot out the curse words for me,” says Vampire Weekend bassist Chris Baio, explaining how his father helped shape his early interest in music. “He would bring home records he was interested in and it always ran a wide gamut. His favorite musician is Jimi Hendrix and we would listen to so much Jimi Hendrix, but at the same time, I would have been ten years old when he bought his first Guided By Voices album and we would have had that on in the house. Always having music around in the house, reading the Saturday or Sunday paper, that’s how I grew up. There wasn’t one defined sensibility. My dad would buy A Tribe Called Quest, he’d buy Green Day, and so I’d listen to a fairly wide gamut. It’s definitely a huge reason why I’m a musician today.” Baio’s new solo album, Dead Hand Control, is out now. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jennylsq/support

Why Not Both is an exploration of how our multiple passions shape our identity, hosted by musician and therapist Pam Shaffer and produced by writer and photographer Laura Studarus. For our fourth season, we partnered up with Under The Radar to explore the lives of musicians, writers, actors, and creatives. For our season opener, we spent time with Chris Baio exploring what it means to release his new solo album during a year of tumultuous events. Baio is used to being on tour non stop with Vampire Weekend and was looking forward to making good on his New Years resolution to produce other artists in his new studio but instead found himself accidentally exploring life as a kayaking bearded outdoorsman in Oregon. We all got a little weird in 2020 but we are glad that it resulted in some new songs and only a few questionable hair choices. Thanks again for listening!

Then it's review time. Will the Castologists come to blows this week? Stay tuned to find out!Liz Recommends - Patient Zerohttps://www.patientzeropodcast.com/New Hampshire Public Radio takes a look at what happens when society confronts the limits of scientific knowledge, through one of the most enigmatic diseases of the 21st Century: Lyme disease.Patient Zero is a multipart podcast series from NHPR. The project – in development for more than a year - continues the tradition of in-depth, audio-rich podcast storytelling from NHPR, including such prior productions as Outside/In, Civics 101, Bear Brook and Supervision. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate there are more than 300,000 new cases of Lyme disease a year: more new cases than measles, acute hepatitis, and mumps. That growth also makes Lyme disease more common than whooping cough, tuberculosis, and spotted fever. In New Hampshire, the prevalence of Lyme disease infections led the state Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to create a statewide prevention plan, to give guidance on how best to reduce the risk of tick-borne disease.Patient Zero host Taylor Quimby knows what it’s like to experience the disease. In the summer of 2017, Quimby had his own bout with Lyme disease, an experience that sent him searching for answers as he turned from reporter to disease detective. For both: start at the start.https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/patient-zero/id1473507649Nick Recommends - The Road Taken with CT and BaioVampire Weekend’s Chris Tomson and Chris Baio take an honest look at the life of a touring musician through conversations with their peers, idols, and rivals. The Berlin Wall has just come down. The Soviet Union is on the verge of collapse. A heavy metal band from West Germany, the Scorpions, releases a power ballad, “Wind of Change.” The song becomes the soundtrack to the peaceful revolution sweeping Europe — and one of the biggest rock singles ever. According to some fans, it’s the song that ended the Cold War.Decades later, New Yorker writer Patrick Radden Keefe hears a rumor from a source: the Scorpions didn’t actually write “Wind of Change.” The CIA did. This is Patrick’s journey to find the truth. Among former operatives and leather-clad rockers, from Moscow to Kiev to a GI Joe convention in Ohio, it’s a story about spies doing the unthinkable...
