We´ll Soon Be Going Home).

Lead singer Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend has been called a generational voice in indie rock. From the band's iconic first singles “A-Punk” and “Oxford Comma” to their acclaimed follow-up albums “Contra” and “Modern Vampires of the City,” their music defined the mid-‘00s for millions of people. Now, Vampire Weekend is back with their fifth album, “Only God Was Above Us.” Ezra joins Tom in the Q studio to talk about the new record, the early days of the band, and what it's like having Quincy Jones for a father-in-law.
Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig checks in with Lana to chat about the new record, the important influence of New York, how time is the greatest collaborator, and more.
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got what might seem like an unlikely pairing, but one that makes sense when you dive into it: Rick Mitarotonda from Goose and M.C. Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger. If you're not into the jam-band world, Goose might not be super familiar to you yet, but in that world, the Connecticut band is absolutely massive, moving from clubs to amphitheaters over the past few years. And while jam bands themselves are pretty common—the barrier to entry isn't super high—very few have reached these heights, and after a decade Goose already find themselves in the vaunted company of bands like Phish and Dead and Company. It's kind of obvious why: They are fantastic players, and their songs offer more than just extended noodling. It makes sense that they're not influenced just by their jam forebears, but by jam-adjacent indie kingpins like Radiohead. And they've even got the stamp of approval of Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig, who asked them to cover his band's song “2021”—and to stretch it out to 20 minutes and 21 seconds. The latest Goose album is Dripfield from 2022, but as you'll hear in this chat, they've got a couple more in the works. Check out their song “Give It Time” right here. As the primary creative force behind Hiss Golden Messenger, M.C. Taylor has amassed an incredible catalog over the past 15 or so years. He was initially lumped in with the alt-country scene and later with the likes of Will Oldham and Bill Callahan, Hiss records kind of defy categorization, though I should mention that 2019's Terms Of Surrender was nominated for the Best Americana Album Grammy. Taylor's latest album as Hiss Golden Messenger is called Jump For Joy, and the title is reflective of what's inside: It's looser and more playful and even groove-oriented at moments, a new move but not an unwelcome one for sure. Check out “Sanctuary” right here. In this chat, Rick and M.C. chat about making studio records versus playing live, and they get into the fundamental question of how songs are written. Answer: It's different for everybody. They both reflect, oddly, on the Hare Krishna world, and Rick decides that Goose is more like a sitcom or a sports team than a band. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 2:48 – Start of the chat 4:04 – What are you listening to right now? 12:05 – Rick's musical awakening 19:01 – Long songs versus short ones. “It'd be sick to have some short bangers.” 24:36 – Goose's recent lineup change and how that might affect things. 36:16 – The difficulty of writing new songs while on tour. Thanks for listening, and thanks to Rick and M.C. for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform. Since there was a major influx of new listeners thanks to last week's episode 105 with Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig, I wanted to bring back this super fun 2021 interview with VW bassist (Chris) Baio, which we recorded in the lead-up to his solo album Dead Hand Control. This is an abbreviated version of the episode, but you can find the full interview HERE. We talked about Sex and the City, Burnt, Spin Doctors, "Bohemian Rhapsody," Akron/Family, his dad's Columbia House CD collection, seeing Cranberries at Jones Beach Amphitheater, VW's early days at Columbia University, and more.
Michael Kosta tackles the Biden administration's new standard for limiting so-called “forever chemicals” in drinking water, the USPS's announcement to raise the price of postage stamps, and Democrats' call for Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor to retire. Plus, Troy Iwata joins to offer up some youthful options as her replacement. And the Grammy Award-winning band Vampire Weekend, Ezra Koenig, Chris Baio, and Chris Tomson, discusses the story behind the cover of their new album, “Only God Was Above Us,“ being an iconic NYC band living in LA, and what inspired their podcast, “Vampire Campfire.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Some bands, you love them almost instantly, and that was the deal for me with Vampire Weekend, who I was fortunate to be tipped off to early on, through some mutual friends in NYC. My love for them has only grown with each new album, as VW continue to explore new sonic terrain, including on their brilliant latest LP, Only God Was Above Us, which is out now. In this interview, VW frontman Ezra Koenig — one of my mega-favorite songwriters, and also one of my favorite dudes — talks about his mega favorites. And, somewhat unsurprisingly, we have at least a few in common — The Kinks and Belle and Sebastian, among the ones he talks about here. Ezra also shares how his music tastes were shaped by the 50s and 60s pop hits he loved listening to as a kid, on his local oldies station, and how that shifted into discovering Scott Walker and Neil Young and 90s hip-hop and early aughts Radiohead and a whole eclectic swath of other music, including 21st century faves like M.I.A. and Lana Del Rey. We also discuss the evolution of Vampire Weekend, and how his view of what the band can be continues to expand.
In honor of Ezra Koenig's birthday and the release of "Only God Was Above Us", we're finally doing a deep dive into the iconic indie band Vampire Weekend. Listen in for an detailed discussion of their discography, iconic artsy baroque pop music style, their departure and return to chamber pop, our review of their new album, our favorite times seeing them live, and other random topics.
Ezra Koenig versteht die Aufregung nicht. Ja, es ist tatsächlich schon wieder fünf Jahre her seit Vampire Weekend, New Yorks Indie Rock-Export #1, zum letzten Mal ein Album veröffentlicht haben. So what? This Friday, March 1st Bruce Hornsby releases a new album in collaboration with chamber ensemble yMusic. The record is entitled “Deep Sea Vents”. It straddles the line between contemporary songwriting and modern classical, and the album has an aquatic theme with all the songs dealing with the ocean, or at least water in some way. The album is emblematic of much of Hornsby's career in that it veers from the strange to the beautiful to the funny to the challenging. He doesn't like the easy route. If you know anything about Bruce's career you'll know his mid-80s smash “The Way It Is”, released by Bruce Hornsby and the Range, a powerful piece of social commentary inspired by his life growing up in Virginia, and featuring two piano solos. It's a song that's hung around, being sampled by rappers like 2Pac and Polo G. Bruce seems to have a conflicted relationship with the song. He often stills play it live but in a re-worked way, and he seems keen to be seen as a forward-thinking artist, not wishing to be defined by the past. He was a live member of the Grateful Dead in the early 90s playing over a hundred shows with them. In recent years, he's collaborated often with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, and you'll see like the likes of Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig or The Staves or Blake Mills pop up on his album credits. I was a big admirer of his 2019 album “Absolutely Zero” which is well worth your time. Bruce was fantastic company when we spoke, and I hope you enjoy our chat!X: @signalspodcastInstagram: @sendingsignalspodcast
Bruce is best known for his first album The Way It Is (1986), but has come light years since then through 18+ albums, experimenting with different styles, playing over 100 shows with the Grateful Dead, and scoring numerous projects for Spike Lee. He's won three Grammys and recorded with music royalty including Elton John, Ornette Coleman, Branford Marsalis, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, etc. We discuss "Sidelines" (feat. Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend) from 'Flicted (2022), "My Resolve" (feat. James Mercer of The Shins) from Non-Secure Connection (2020), and a new live version of "Shadow Hand" from the 25th Anniversary Edition of Spirit Trail. End song: "Cast-Off" (feat. Justin Vernon of Bon Iver) from Absolute Zero (2019). Intro: "The Way It Is" (Live from Köln, 2019). More at brucehornsby.com Hear more Nakedly Examined Music. Like our Facebook page. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a pair of pioneering musical searchers who came together for a Grammy-nominated record last year: Angélique Kidjo and Ibrahim Maalouf. Now, trying to encapsulate Kidjo's career into the little space I have here is an even more daunting task than usual—and we've had some really accomplished people on this podcast. Born in West Africa, Kidjo has ably explored various musics over the past 40 years or so, winning fans with an incredible range of styles and interests. She's played on Lilith Fair, won Grammys, been a muse for Philip Glass, started a foundation to empower girls and young women in sub-Saharan Africa, collaborated with everyone from Carlos Santana to Ezra Koenig to Dr. John to Josh Groban to Kronos Quartet—and that list goes on and on. The only real constant in her career—besides a sort of deep, inexplicable beauty—is a restlessness. Kidjo is always looking for the next thing to spark her interest, which led to a recent Grammy-nominated collaboration with today's other guest, Ibrahim Maalouf. Maalouf is a French-Lebanese trumpeter who shares a musical outlook with Kidjo—both care deeply about always pushing the boundaries of what they do, and never repeating themselves. To that end, they collaborated on last year's Queen of Sheba, which takes the oft-told Biblical story to new places. KIdjo wrote the lyrics in the Yoruba language, and Maalouf's music builds a bridge between the sounds of the Middle East and Africa. Since that record came out, Maalouf has already released another, Capacity to Love, on which he examines American sounds—specifically hip-hop—gathering guests like Eric the Architect from Flatbush Zombies and Pos from De La Soul. Also, strangely, Sharon Stone. In this lovely and enlightening conversation, Kidjo and Maalouf trade stories about their inspiration behind making music, and each shares some really profound advice they got as children. Kidjo speaks about the recent loss of her mother, and what that's meant to her spiritually—and how it might affect her next album, which sounds like it will be deeply personal. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Angélique Kidjo and Ibrahim Maalouf for chatting. Ezra Koenig is an unlikely evangelist for the Grateful Dead, and that's exactly why we brought him on the show. In this first episode of America's Dead, hear the Vampire Weekend frontman defend the wisdom of “hippie psychedelic nonsense” and reveal what has inspired him most as a songwriter. Plus in this episode, Koenig imagines that if Kurt Cobain were alive today, he too would be a Deadhead. Credits:America's Dead is produced by work by work: Scott Newman, Jemma Brown, Kathleen Ottinger, Alex Kapelman, and Ben Montoya. Additional production from Josh Agajanian. The show is mixed by Sam Bair and Josh Hahn. Our theme music is by Jake Longstreth, John Nixon, Aaron Olson, and Ryan Adlaf of Mountain Brews and Richard Pictures. The show art is created by Andy J. Pizza. Special thanks to Joe Dawson at Sonos.

Inspired by recent collaborations with some of America's coolest indie A-listers (Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig, Danielle Haim, Justin Vernon aka Bon Iver, James Mercer, Jamila Woods) Bruce Hornsby has been prolific in recent times, making a trilogy of albums beginning with the ‘return-to-form album' Absolute Zero (2019). This trilogy is a real display of Hornsby's musical prowess and curiosity – a mix of progressive, avant garde pop and contemporary classical works. Completing the trio of albums, Flicted, Hornsby's 23rd studio record, is a collection of songs built from ‘cues' for his music to Spike Lee's films (Bruce and Spike have been collaborating since the early 90s). The album features some phenomenal side players including the producer Blake Mills (on guitar) and yMusic, a Brooklyn-based chamber sextet that lends lush arrangements throughout. Indeed as Bruce hints during our conversation, more is to come from his sessions with yMusic. “I'm a lifelong student and I'm way more interested in getting better as a musician, a vocalist and especially as a writer. I've been getting nasty letters ever since my second record saying “how dare you change”, but my silent response is “you haven't heard anything yet.”Perhaps all ‘pop' musicians of longevity should aspire to Bruce Hornsby's musically borderless, ‘post-genre' way of working. “My art of longevity is not giving a rat's ass about what's popular, or whether I'm popular but to please myself and to grow, evolve, change and expand…on and on”. When it comes to music, and Bruce Hornsby, whatever you do, don't call it a comeback. Support the show

Síðasta föstudag kom út fjórða breiðskífu bandarísku indísveitarinnar Vampire Weekend, Father of the Bride, sem er jafnframt þeirra fyrsta í sex ár.

Jersey Boy Evan and New Yorker David bring in guest Rickie Sherman to talk Neo Yokio, the inscrutable vanity anime co-production from Vampire Weekend lead singer Ezra Koenig. But first, a recap of Evan's weekend with Studio Trigger at Genericon 2018 and some Boogiepop news. Topics include: Kim and Kanye's favorite anime, the pineapple on pizza of anime, and a shockingly sincere discussion of race and class in America. Production note: Rickie's mic was having some issues, so apologies for the crappy quality. I tried my best to clean it up in post! Send us feedback at podcast@anigamers.com!
