In the world of international espionage and Cold War intrigue there is no agent more secret than… The Soldier. This may perhaps be explained by the utter failure of this forgotten film. In this scintillating episode, a confounded Paul, Javi, and - serenely - Producer Brad investigate the first and only adventure of a would-be American James Bond in a desperate mission to uncover an international nuclear plot of international peculiar people hellbent on doing international terrible things. Sigh. It's not a good movie, or even a coherent travelogue, but it's possibly our funniest episode, and also among our shortest! (Though not quite as short as crazed Klaus Kinski's confounding cameo as a sinister snow bunny assassin.)Follow us!InstagramBlueskyemail: Multiplexoverthruster@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. Such a pleasure to talk to Paul Cuff on Robert Egger's version of NOSFERATU. He knos so much that the discussion of the film unfurls into a discussion of the various other versions, Murnau's original (1922), Herzog's version (1979), David Lee Fisher's version (2023), and onto the films of Guy Maddin, Pablo Berger's BLANCA NIEVES (2012), various versions of THE STUDENT OF PRAGUE and even THE ARTIST (Michel Hazanavicius, 2011), which Paul loathes. We were entertained by, enjoyed -- with reservations -- the rich visual world of Egger's version, the thick and dense sound, and we praise Nicholas Hoult as the emotional anchor of the film. But Paul articulates his uncertainty about whether the film was a parody of itself or the genre or Nosferatu in its various incarnations. The film seems to be drawing on Murnau, Herzog, Caspar Friedrich's paintings. But it seems to create a world in which God ostensibly exists but no one seems to believe in the ideology that would sustain this. Paul notes with interest on how Eggers credits the screenplay of the original Nosferatu but not Murnau, the director. Paul highlights how Nosferatu was itself a rip-off of Bram Stoker's work and the significance of the titles of the most prominent version (Nosferatu, A Symphony of Horror (Murnau) and the German title of Herzog's version, Nosferatu, Phantom of the Night.) What all versions have in common is that they're all about sex and death, all about sex and the maiden; all versions have Nosferatu as a sexual figure as well as a figure of death and pestilence, How does Egger's version sit on the shoulder of previous versions and what does it add to them? We discuss our love of the performances of Max Schrek and Klaus Kinski and much more in the podcast below:

This week on *The Rotten Horror Picture Show*, Clay and Amanda are doing nothing to help my steadily worsening vampire confusion by taking a big ol' bite out of Werner Herzog's 1979 classic Nosferatu the Vampyre, starring Klaus Kinski as maybe the creepiest Dracula/Nosferatu/Count Orlok hybrid ever filmed. It's moody, it's beautiful, and it's got rats. So many rats. Okay. Look. I'm just gonna say it: I think we've officially hit critical mass on Nosferatus and Draculas. I mean, how many pasty bald guys with capes and long fingernails named “Count Something” does the world *need*? First there was the original *Nosferatu*, then Lugosi's *Dracula*, then Lee's *Dracula*, then the *Nosferatu* remake, then Dracula in space, Dracula in love, Dracula with a podcast probably—I don't know anymore. The point is, I'm starting to suspect these aren't *characters* in movies. I think they might be *real*, and I think they're multiplying. Every time I look around, there's another Nosferatu lurking in a dark corner, hissing at a cat. I'm tired. I'm confused. And I'm scared of capes now.Join Clay and Amanda as they dive into Herzog's eerie homage to Murnau's 1922 silent classic and debate just how many spooky bald vampires is too many. Is Kinski's Count Dracula really just Orlok with a stage name? Does it matter when he's this unsettling? Who gave him permission to move like *that*?One thing's for sure: if another Nosferatu pops up, I'm going into hiding. Probably somewhere with garlic. Maybe in a mall. Wait, no—*not* a mall. We've been over that.Anyway, listen in… while you still can.And be sure to hit up patreon.com/thepenskyfile to hear all the coverage of remakes and reboots this year!

Isabelle Adjani stars as Lucy Harker. Kinski played Renfield opposite Christopher Lee's Dracula in Jess Franco's Count Dracula (1970)! 1979 was a big year for Dracula! There were three films featuring Bram Stoker's Vampire Count...Dracula directed by John Badham starring Frank Langella, Love at First Bite directed by Stan Dragoti starring George Hamilton, and Nosferatu the Vampyre! Join us on our Nosferatu journey and let us know your favorite! Plot: Count Dracula moves from Transylvania to Wismar, spreading the Black Plague across the land. Only a woman pure of heart can bring an end to his reign of horror. Taglines: Nosferatu...he who is doomed to wander alone in darkness. Nosferatu...he who is condemned to destroy even those whom he loves. Nosferatu...a tale of seduction in the dark night of the soul. It is fear and fun. It is a scream of horror and a cry of delight. It is Nosferatu, the Vampyre. ...He who is doomed to wander alone in darkness. ...He who is condemned to destroy even those whom he loves.

Robert Eggers' remake of NOSFERATU will be stalking movie theaters on Christmas Day 2024, so Bob and Greg sit down with movie critic Matthew Zoller Seitz of Vulture/New York Magazine and www.RogerEbert.com to discuss the previous versions of the defining vampire classic. But before we get into that, Matt talks about his love of Robert Eggers as a filmmaker, and takes a deep dive into THE NORTHMAN (2022), Eggers' retelling of Shakespeare's Hamlet as a bloody and ironic Viking tale. We also talk about Eggers' THE LIGHTHOUSE (2019) as slapstick comedy, and different takes on DRACULA, as NOSFERATU started as an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic horror novel. As the only one of us who's seen the new NOSFERATU, Matt dishes about that as well without any giving any spoilers, and talks about interviewing WILLEM DAFOE who plays the vampire hunter in the upcoming vampire epic. Dafoe is definitely a guy who's been in a lot of movies to get stoned to. For our old movies--or the classic films if you prefer--we pair cannabis with the film that started it all, F.W. Murnau's original NOSFERATU: A SYMPHONY OF HORROR from 1922, a film that continues to impact horror movies today despite being over 100 years old. And then we pivot to 1979 with Werner Herzog's NOSFERATU THE VAMPIRE with KLAUS KINSKY as the bald and brooding bloodsucker in a movie that is incredibly faithful to its source material while still being pure Herzog. This is a brisk episode at just over an hour long, so Bob didn't get the chance to ask Matt and Greg who would win in an UNDEAD HELL IN A CELL MATCH between Max Schreck (1922), Klaus Kinski (79) and Bill Skarsgård (2022), although Bob did have that question in his notes at taping time. AP Mike from THE BEST SHOW joins us once again for our #Noirvember episode and he's bringing Humphrey Bogart with him. Mike has chosen two wildly different takes on the Bogart persona from two of Hollywood greatest directors. First, it's the classic mystery that made Bogie a star with THE MALTESE FALCON from first-time director John Huston in 1941. Bogart is San Francisco private dick Sam Spade in this veritable blueprint for all the detective noir that followed it. Bogie is backed by an amazing cast with Mary Astor as femme fatale Brigid O'Shaughnessy; Petter Lorre as Joel Cairo; Sydney Greenstreet making his film debut at 62 years old as Kaspar Guttman; and Elisha Cook, Jr. playing shifty thug Wilmer Cook. All of these characters are on an existential quest the big, black bird--the stuff that dreams are made of--and several of them will do anything to get it. Then, Bogart goes grim dark in Nicholas Ray's IN A LONELY PLACE (1950). Bogie plays Dixon "Dix" Steele, a hasbeen Hollywood script writer with severe anger management issues. Dix is dragged in for questioning after Mildred, the hat-check girl he took back to his apartment, turns up murdered, and Bogie's wise-cracking ways take on an air of extreme menace as he jokes his way through the police interrogation. His neighbor, Laurel Gray played by Noir princess Gloria Grahame, falls for him despite the allegations because she saw that he didn't leave with the victim. But as Dix grows more violent and domineering, she, and the audience, start to question all that we've seen. Mike details the differences between the movie and the novel that it's based on. Eddie Muller's favorite film of all time. In our opening segment, we attempt to sort out the wreckage of our society, and our world, post-election before the conversation devolves into more recent movie recommendations. Cory really wants everyone to see CONCLAVE, while Bob says to get really high and watch HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS on Fandor or tubi. Meanwhile, Philena is plotting her escape to Ireland. With Robert Eggers' remake of NOSFERATU hitting theaters next month,OMFYS will be back next month for NOSFERATU CHRISTMAS. Making Tarantino: The Podcast

On this week's episode Phillip is joined once again by writer Jennifer Upton www.jenniferuptonwriter.com The two of them discuss 1982's Venom starring Klaus Kinski, Oliver Reed, Susan George, and Sterling Hayden. Phillip starts the show by giving the general information of the movie with some facts sprinkled in. It's then time for Listener Opinions from Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Then they discuss this movie and boy is it a fun discussion. They answer the question of whether they notice anything that Tarantino might have liked or used in a film. Then Phillip and Jennifer individually rate the film. It's then time to answer whether they would buy this movie, rent it, or find it for free. Phillip then gives his Phil's Film Favorite of the Week; 52 Pick Up (1986). Jennifer gives a recommendation of a movie that she watched; Savages (1974). Then Phillip promotes next week's show when he will be joined once again by Kristin Battestella to discuss Frankenstein Created Woman (1967). Thanks for listening.

We check out Funeral in Berlin (1966), directed by Guy Hamilton, and The Soldier (1982), directed by James Glickenhaus. We'll dive deep into Cold War lore and the joy of "shabby" spy stories, while exploring the usual array of oblique asides such as gratuitous blood squibs, phallic bollards, Uzi pirouettes and Klaus Kinski's manic desire to steal the tightest ski pants in the Alps. We will be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for both films, so if you haven't seen them before you listen, you can nevertheless avoid spoilers for Funeral in Berlin by skipping ahead to the 1:08:13 mark, and for The Soldier by skipping ahead to 1:41:26. Welcome to It's A Wonderful Podcast!! Spaghetti Westerns get snowy on this week's main show as Morgan and Jeannine talk another Sergio Corbucci movie, and one even more unrelentingly brutal than Django (1966). A mute gunslinger is out for revenge and tries to protect a struggling town from ruthless bounty killers in THE GREAT SILENCE (1968) starring Jean-Louis Trintignant, Klaus Kinski, Frank Wolff & Vonetta McGee! A cold, harsh, unfiltered movie, yet a meaningfully layered one. It provoked an intense reaction from Jeannine, and has quickly become maybe Morgan's favourite of the genre! Werner Herzog is a filmmaker with an intuitive sense for showing the right thing at the right time, whether he is offering the story of a maniacal conquistador, Count Dracula, or himself eating his own shoe. Klaus Kinski was, according to many, more monster than man and an actor who resembled the megalomaniacs he portrayed. Together, Herzog and Kinski made five films. Kinski died in 1991; in 1999, Herzog released the documentary My Best Fiend about their relationship. The film combines the ravings of Kinski with the introspection of Herzog and explores the degree to which we are entertained by other people's volatility, how we fall in love with actors because of small gestures, and our misguided desire to believe that people who create beautiful art are beautiful themselves. 'Nosferatu: Phantom of the Night') is a 1979 horror film written and directed by Werner Herzog.
