If you're excited about the next generation of the internet, check out the show: https://link.chtbl.com/hrr_h-XCWe've heard a lot about the premise and the promise of prediction markets for a long time, but they finally hit the main stage with the most recent election. So what worked (and didn't) this time? Are they really better than pollsters, is polling dead? So in this conversation, we tease apart the hype from the reality of prediction markets, from the recent election to market foundations... going more deeply into the how, why, and where these markets work. We also discuss the design challenges and opportunities (including implications for builders throughout). And we also cover other information aggregation mechanisms -- from peer prediction to others -- given that prediction markets are part of a broader category of information-elicitation and information-aggregation mechanisms. Where do domain experts, superforecasters, pollsters, and journalists come in (and out)? Where do (and don't) blockchain and crypto technologies come in -- and what specific features (decentralization, transparency, real-time, open source, etc.) matter most, and in what contexts? Finally, we discuss applications for prediction and decision markets -- things we could do right away to in the near-future to sci-fi -- touching on trends like futarchy, AI entering the market, DeSci, and more. Our special expert guests are Alex Taborrok, professor of economics at George Mason University and Chair in Economics at the Mercatus Center; and Scott Duke Kominers, research partner at a16z crypto, and professor at Harvard Business School -- both in conversation with Sonal Chokshi. Ah, the bizarre love/hate life of the New Order fan. What's your most loved and least favorite song on Low-Life?! For our fourth Request Episode Election, we went through dozens of listener suggestions to nominate Joe Jackson's Look Sharp, Jane's Addiction's Ritual de lo Habitual and this 1985 Manchester classic, which won in a landslide election. While half of us moaned about the album choice from our mystery nominators (MIA), we all had lots of great memories to share of adoring and rolling our eyes at NO. Superfan Sam hosted and held up lots of New Order vinyl, old tshirts were dusted off and Adam delivered an avalanche of guest rankers, starting with internationally-loved San Diego superstars Koi Division, who donned their iconic fish heads for a filmed interview. Days later, he visited Gold Diggers Sound in Los Angeles to chat with Dave Trumfio of the synth-lovin' Pulsars, whose lone 1997 debut/farewell album has finally recently been reissued. The two full interviews will be on our Youtube channel. Just you wait. In addition to getting tribute band opinions from San Francisco's Temptation and San Diego's Thieves Like Us (Substance responded too late to have their support for "Sunrise" be included), he got first hand accounts of 91X FM's infamous 1985 year-end countdown switcheroo from DJs Dwight Arnold, Pam Wolf and Billy Bones. An Australian app is setting out to help diners tired of battling background noise when they visit restaurants. The app allows users to search and review restaurants based on noise levels. Open-plan kitchens and sparse furnishing are the modern hallmarks of a trendy restaurant. However, some restauranteurs fail to consider the auditory implications of these design features. Diners tired of shouting across their starters now have a solution to the problem of overwhelming background noise. Audiologist Laura Drexler has designed “Ambient Menu,” an app that helps match restaurant-goers with venues that meet their hearing needs. Realizing that some potential restaurant-goers had stopped eating out altogether because of their sensitivity to noise, Drexler created an app that allows people to find and rate restaurants based on their auditory needs and preferences. “There are so many benefits of dining with other people, we get, you know, that endorphin rush, we get to engage, we get to be, you know, social human beings,” says Drexler. According to Drexler, research shows that too much noise in the background of a dining experience pushes customers to eat faster and to drink more alcohol. And it also changes our sense of taste in a negative way. “Once the background noise level gets to a certain level, your sympathetic nervous system kicks in, you have an increased heart rate, increased adrenaline, increased respiratory rate,” says Drexler. Stephen Morris, a retiree from Adelaide, says background noise has often had a negative impact on his dining experiences. “There's been times I've actually felt I'm being attacked by the noise, which, it's not a nice feeling,” explains Morris. “Regardless of what age you are, it would be nice to go out for a meal and not have to shout at each other to have a conversation.” Drexler is now hoping to be able to develop a smartphone version of her app and then hopes to offer the service across Australia next year. This article was provided by The Associated Press.
“The responsibility is all yours; no one can stop you from being honest or straightforward.” – Marcus Aurelius In This Episode, We Get Stoic About: A screenshot from a 2009 educational video posted to YouTube by Stephen Morris has become a popular meme showcasing how the ‘Domino Effect' works. In the meme, users label the first tiny domino with some insignificant event like “skipping class today” and then the last, large domino, with a life changing event such as “becoming homeless.” It's a humorous way to illustrate how a small step in the wrong direction can have lasting impact on our lives. This is especially true for law enforcement…Take Eugenio Pedraza, for example. We discuss a real life example of the domino effect on today's podcast! If you aren't using a heart rate monitor to train, you're missing out on critical data. Through accurate heart rate tracking and real-time feedback, all effort counts. Takeaways: The responsibility for honesty lies with the individual. Small actions can lead to significant consequences. Integrity is crucial in law enforcement. One bad decision can snowball into a larger issue. Marcus Aurelius's wisdom is relevant today. Recognizing the domino effect can prevent disaster. Personal stories illustrate broader truths. Every day is a choice between honesty and dishonesty. Identifying small issues can prevent larger problems. Support organizations that help first responders. Until Next Time…out of role!

This is especially true for law enforcement. We discuss a personal story about how this can go terribly wrong on today's podcast. Takeaways One small decision can have significant consequences, especially in law enforcement. Being honest and straightforward is crucial to maintaining integrity and avoiding negative outcomes. Avoiding honesty and choosing to cover up mistakes can lead to a chain of lies and destructive actions. Taking responsibility for one's actions and being willing to admit mistakes can soften the blow of negative consequences. Until Next Time…out of role!

What do two of the youngest city councilmembers in California have in common? Both believe that young people belong in politics. Creating Citizens, The Commonwealth Club's education initiative, is excited to host Oakland Councilmember Janani Ramachandran and South San Francisco Councilmember James Coleman as they talk with high school students about the role of young people in civic life. Both city councilmembers, born and raised in the communities they now serve, find themselves as the youngest members of their respective city councils. As they work to empower their communities, they find they must constantly navigate a much older political ecosystem that isn't always the most welcoming to young faces. The councilmembers will be joined in conversation with Dr. Stephen Morris. Dr. Morris, the CEO and co-founder of the Civic Education Center, has spent more than 20 years working in education. Together, they will discuss local government and how everyone, from politicians to students, can work with people with whom they disagree. Learn more about your ad choices. Joy Division and New Order drummer, Stephen Morris, on being in a band as an older man, adapting to gig audiences, memories of Joy Division vocalist Ian Curtis, Stephen's fear at the rise of electric drum machines, and his fondness for reading instruction manuals.
Joining Tim for a Listening Party is by New Order's Stephen Morris & Gillian Gilbert to talk about one of the greatest albums ever made, and Tim's favourite album of all time, Power, Corruption & Lies. From its iconic album cover, to the lead single that never appeared on the record, Blue Monday, it is a seminal album of mystery, beauty & greatness. This episode Stephen & Gillian revisit this classic album that is celebrating its 40 anniversary this year. It was released on 2nd May 1983 on Factory
In May 1980, the band Joy Division was devastated by the death of lead singer Ian Curtis. The three remaining band members, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, and Stephen Morris, decided they would keep making music together, and a few months later, Gillian Gilbert joined them. They called the band New Order. New Order is one of the most influential bands of the last four decades. Their song “Blue Monday" came out in 1983, and it holds the record for being the best-selling 12-inch single of all time. Rolling Stone put “Blue Monday” on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and Pitchfork included it in its top 5 best songs of the 1980s. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of “Blue Monday,” in this episode, New Order discusses how they created the song. This episode was produced in collaboration with Transmissions, the official New Order and Joy Division podcast produced by Cup and Nuzzle. We've put together this story out of the hours and hours of interviews they've recorded, along with a new interview I did with Peter Hook. As you'll hear the four of them explain, nothing about Blue Monday's success, or really, even its existence, was something that they planned for. For more, visit songexploder.net/new-order.
